About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Climber6086700 contributionsFantastic tour!Fantastic wine tour. Don was an amazing driver and host. He was knowledgeable about the area and encouraged questions. We started out as 8 strangers in a van and by the end of our tour we were 8 friends having a great time learning about the wonderful wine region of Marlborough NZ. and drinking delicious wines with friendly local hosts. Would highly recommend this tour run by Sound Connection. Sound connection made an epic adjustment for us, in that our ferry was very late arriving into Picton due to an unexpected engine issue. They offered to collect us at the ferry terminal so we could still participate in the tour! They went above and beyond for us and I am very thankful for their Kiwi hospitality!!Written 20 November 2024
- LeAnn H0 contributionsWineries were Lovely!!Super-Superb-Sensational. Enjoyed the wines, beautiful views with lovely, multi-national new friends. Most of the wines tasted were White-as expected, a few Rose’ and an occasional Red.Written 17 November 2024
- Barina610 contributionsGreat experienceOn advice from locals we booked a half day wine tour with Sounds Connection. They were on time in a small bus. 4 vineyards were visited, the driver, Stuart gave excellent commentary and was very knowledgeable about the Marlborough regions wines. The tour concluded with a visit to a boutique chocolate factory. I cannot recommend this company enough.Written 14 November 2024
- Charles M0 contributionsHalf Day Wine Tour from Picton! My wife and I did a half day wine tour with a small group from Picton yesterday. It was terrific in every way. Nice van, on time pick up, great wineries and Chris our driver was absolutely fantastic. He made the trip for us. Good driver, very kind, friendly and informative. Highly recommended 👍Written 9 November 2024
- emmag7660 contributionsGood value for money and great serviceAmazing day out - great value for money and great company! Andy was a fab driver and tour guide, he was very knowledgeable and made sure we had a great time at the different vineyards! It was lovely. A half day wine tour which came with around 15 tastings - would recommend!Written 3 October 2024
- nicolette3330 contributionsMagic Fishing TripAn absolutely magic day fishing down the Queen Charlotte Sound with skipper Mark, who was super friendly, helpful and has a great sense of humour 😉 Thanks so much for getting us out on a wintry day to give our lads a true Marlborough Sounds fishing experience, complete with us being lucky enough to bring home blue cod for dinner!Written 25 June 2024
- 113michelem0 contributionsBrilliant! What an amazing afternoon. Great company, fab guides and lovely wine. It was an excellent experience. Couldn’t ask for more!Written 27 May 2024
- Z2565RNandyc0 contributionsAfternoon wine tastingFour wineries visited on the tour. A little more detail below. First a big thanks to Andy, our driver and guide. Informative, friendly and living proof that age is just a number. It was great to be on a small group tour (6 of us), as this made the experience more personable and memorable. Each winery offered something different in terms of the taste and experience. We loved the experience at all four, but particularly Johanneshof, as we were the only group at this boutique vineyard. Thanks to co-owner Edel for her insight into the winery and the wines. Great afternoon, thoroughly recommended.Written 13 April 2024
- CarmelNewcastle_Aus0 contributionsGreat wines in the Marlborough regionMy husband and I enjoyed this half day wine tour with Sounds Connection. Easy to book on-line and good follow up communication. Picked up on time from our accommodation in Picton. Sam, our guide, was friendly and being a local was very knowledgeable about the area and the various vineyards. It was only a small group of 5 so we were able to interact with Sam and each other, which was fun. We visited 4 wineries and the staff were all welcoming and knew their product. Mainly white wines and pinot noir but if you are a red wine drinker, you could adapt, as my husband did. We found it to be good value and a good way to fill in our Sunday afternoon in Picton.Written 25 March 2024
- jw1420140 contributionsWinery Tour Marlborough RegionGreat winery tour! Tour bus was comfortable and our driver/tour guide Sam was friendly, had a sense of humour and made everyone feel comfortable. Sam was very knowledgeable of the types of wine produced in the region and their production methods. Visited 5 different wineries which were all very good and had a very nice lunch at St Claire. Nice crew of people on the tour and the pace was very comfortable and not rushed. Would recommend!!Written 20 March 2024
- Trav3410 contributionsGreat wine tourExcellent tour to four wineries. Andy was a genial, knowledgeable host. I’d thoroughly recommend this tour as an introduction to the Marlborough Region, as well as the actual wine-tasting.Written 15 March 2024
- 47nathani0 contributionsPhenomenal Winery Tour ExperienceAbsolutely phenomenal experience. David was the best tour guide we had on our entire trip. His energy was absolutely phenomenal and you could tell he loved doing these tours and learning about the wines alongside us. The "hop on hop off" experience is extremely unreliable (cancelled our reservation at 9 PM the night before) so we booked this tour last minute and could not be more pleased. Extremely well organized, knowledgable tour guide, excellent winery choices. They take care of your, and the tastings come with the cost of the tour. Worth every cent!Written 1 March 2024
- M6807UPjoeb0 contributionsGreat experience, excellent driver, would definitely recommendGreat wine tour, our driver Chris was very knowledgeable and took us to some really nice wineries. The half day was plenty to explore 4 different ones.Written 17 February 2024
- m0minthesun0 contributionsA fun and informative half-day outWe really enjoyed our half day wine tour. Our guide Sam was informative and kind. He drove well and told us about the area, the wine, and the wineries we visited. The folks that served the wines at the wineries were friendly and informative too. We visited four wineries and ended up at a chocolate shop. I enjoyed trying the wines and talking to the others on the tour. Additionally, I felt I learned a bit about wine and the Marlborough area.Written 17 February 2024
- Kate C0 contributionsGreat tour and wineGreat tour. Sam was an awesome guide and we went to some really good wineries. There was a good mix of ages so I would recommend this to everyone.Written 17 February 2024

We really enjoyed learning about not only the vineyards but our tour mates as well. The bus was very comfortable and our guide had an encyclopedic knowledge of local horticulture. We were given the best tables and most extensive wine tastings at each of our stops. Pays to have a local legend for a guide. Good wine and great fun.

Great tour our guide Sam was very informative and entertaining.
We went to 4 wineries and the chocolate shop.
Wineries were great choices and varied from small family run to multinational.
Great great value for money.
Easy pick up after catching the morning ferry from Wellington. You arrive at Picton at 12:15 and depart the ferry anytime up 30 minutes later. It is a 30 minutes drive to Blenheim.

Was great being picked up and dropped off at our motel door. Our driver was relaxed, informative and good value. We didn't have to do anything but enjoy the experience. The 4 wineries we went to gave a good variety of wines. It was just the right amount of time. This was our first ever wine tour and it was very enjoyable.

Fabulous wine tour for a wine lover, with very friendly driver. Visited four wineries and tasted five wines at one. Excepting one, the winery host was very knowledgeable about the wines and could answer all the questions asked. Highly recommended as a very enjoyable afternoon in beautiful countryside.

Booked through Viator, this Sounds Connection trip was efficient, nicely driven and competed by Sam and filled just enough information to keep a rowdy tour bus happy as we sampled wines from four different wineries. A good afternoon was had by all.

The night before we were going to take the ferry from Wellington to Picton we panicked. We realized that the whole point of heading to Picton immediately followed by going to Blenheim was to visit the wineries.
Had we picked and booked a tour? No. Did we realize that there is no taxi service in Picton to get to Blenheim? No.
I quickly found through a search Sounds Connection and upon perusing their website it mentioned how flexible they are and especially with regard to pick ups and drop offs. I late night sent an email to see if we’d be able to book the half day tour.
I was ecstatic when I received a reply the next morning that they had an opening for 2. They also picked us up directly from the ferry in Picton, accommodated our luggage we had with us, then drove us to Blenheim where we had a fantastic tour of 4 wineries then delivered us straight to our hotel in Blenheim.
They basically saved us from not being prepared and we had a great time. Don was our guide and was knowledgeable and also took us for a surprise stop to a chocolate shop which was AMAZING. Would highly recommend!

We arrived on the South Island via Interislander Ferry in heavy rains. Got throughly soaked while finding our rental car. Not a good start to our visit to Blenheim. But T 1:30pm Sam picked us up at our hotel in his van. There were a total of seven people in our van. Sam was a fun guy with a wealth of knowledge on the region and winemaking. He took us to four very nice wineries and a boutique chocolate shop and had us back to our hotel before 6pm. Sam turned a dreary day into one we will remember long after our vacation is over. Great wines, great service, and great fun. My recommendation is to not spend all your money at the wineries....you are definitely going to be spending some on the chocolate. Everyone on our tour bought chocolates!

We had a great day touring the Marlborough wine country. David was our very knowledgeable and fun guide. We went to four different wineries and afterward visited a chocolate store. I have to chuckle because it was a van full of people and at first everyone was rather quiet, but after about the third winery, people were engaging with one another, laughing, and having a great time (no doubt the effects of the wine). By the time we were heading to the fourth winery and the chocolate place, I'm afraid it was like herding cats for David (LOL), but he did a good job. This day will go down as one of my favorite memories of my visit to New Zealand. Thank you, David, for making it a memorable day!

To say that I could have organised a better tour in Yorkshire says it all. There are no wineries in Yorkshire.
All we heard from the driver was that someone on the bus was assessing her performance. If true she will be looking for a job.
She seemed to think it funny when she drove the bus with no hands and told us it was amusing.
We all thought that were visiting 4 wineries. In fact we did 3 plius a brewery.
The driver told us that it was the first time that the company had visited. It was called Jacksons. The presenter was truly terrible, All she told us was "this is a pinot noir" etc. The few questions she was asked she could not answer. We might as well have poured the tastings ourselves. She cant have said 50 words the whole time we were there. If it was the first time surely someone from Sound Connections would have made sure what was expected.
The driver got lost going to the second, Grove Mill, although when we got there I have my suspicions that this was deliberate as another trip from Sound Connections with passengers from a cruise ship were already ensconced. We have to wait 10 mins or so. If we had not got lost we would probably have arrived more or less the same time. The presenter here was every bit as brilliant as the first one was useless. Informative, funny, answered questions well. 10 out of 10.
The third winery, Framlingham, was said to be organic by the driver. When we arrived the other Sound Connections bus was already there. We were despatched to a manky (nasty) dungeon for our tastings. It had not been cleared up from the poor sods who preceded us. The cruise bunch were upstairs. The presenter was marginally better than the first but rushed everything. Not sure if it was her or at the instructions of Sound Connections.
We never got to the fourth winery. We were taken to Moa brewery. We were not expected. I booked this trip months ago so how come no one expected us. The host was brilliant but under of Sound Connections driver we were force fed 5 tastings in about 15 mins.
It was clear to a number on the tour that Sound Connections provide 2 levels of service. Cruise level and pleb level.
Why when 67 (Sound Connections provided this number) wineries have open cellars did two buses follow each other?
This was a waste of money and if Sound Connections had any scruples they would give all passengers their money back.

Dear kenbpfell,
We are extremely sorry to hear about your experience with us and can only apologise that the trip didn’t live up to expectations.
You were visiting on one of the busiest days of the year in the Marlborough wineries – the day before the Marlborough Wine & Food Festival, which draws thousands of visitors to the region. We did have crew tour from a cruise ship happening at the same time but we can assure you they were treated exactly the same as your group. Unfortunately it was the sheer number of general public arriving at the wineries which put our tour behind time. Again, we can only apologise for that. Given we were running behind schedule and wineries won’t allow tastings after 4pm we opted for Moa, which others in your group told us they loved. They in fact tipped the guide. It’s a shame you didn’t like the Framingham ‘Underground’ wine cellar – it’s a very popular venue, but we agree that the first venue was not up to our usual standard.
Our guides are extremely professional but we take your concerns seriously and are following up. We always strive to maintain our standards and keep our tours to schedule no matter how busy the wineries are so we thank you for your feedback.
