It was fab to be picked up and dropped back to our Air BnB. Phil was lovely and very knowledgable about the grapes and the area. There were 10 of us and we all got chatting which was nice. It was a great experience and we had a good time. I realise you can’t please
all the people all of the time and we all have different likes and dislikes. I want to be honest in my review. Some Cellar Doors were better than others. Lawsons was the first and I felt was the best one. The lady at Lawsons was just lovely. She provided us with a print out of what wines we tried so we could mark which ones we liked. None of the other places gave us this. We went back the next day and bought some wine from Lawsons before we headed home.
I had never been on a wine tour before. It was a hot day and by the last two tastings I was over sitting out in the sun and just wanted to have a tasting inside an air conditioned room. I felt Whitehaven put in the least effort and we were just put into the hot outside area, with not enough seating and not asked if we wanted to be inside. The inside just seemed like a shop not a wine tasting place. Lunch at St Clair was delicious and I loved the fact that at St Clair you could go outside and walk amongst the vines.
Hunters was good as we finally got to taste some bubbles, although once again it was sat outside.
For improvements, for me, I expect to be sat inside with all the group around a round table so we can talk to each other about the wine with the wine expert discussing the wine with us. At FROM he poured the wine then walked away while we tasted it each time. I didn’t like being sat outside on beer garden tables or on couches at Jackson’s winery. I felt it should have been a bit more special for us. Maybe the cellar doors could provide some crackers and blue cheese if they say it goes well with that particular wine. Hunters gave us some delicious macadamia nuts from the chocolate shop, which then made us want to go the to shop and buy stuff. Which we did do. Maybe Marlborough Wine Tour you could provide pads and pens so people can write down their favourite wines as it’s hard to remember which ones are liked. All these small touches make it more enjoyable and memorable. I wouldn’t go again but it was well organised by Marlborough Wine Tours and I would recommend them.

Hi Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review - although most of your critique is outside of our control. We will note that all the tastings outside on a hot day was a bit much, although we would be hard pressed to find a AC unit in the cellar doors due to the indoor/outdoor nature of the situation. We no longer provide pen/pads as we find almost all the cellar doors do provide tasting notes to take away ( not sure why you didn't get them on the day your toured). We also encourage people to photograph the tasting notes or bottle labels and load them into ViVino for future reference - this also saves unnecessary consumption which usually ends up in the rubbish. Great to hear that you had a great day with Phil and that the tour was well organised. Thanks Jess

We enjoyed a very relaxed day with Phil who took us to 6 different wineries in the Renwick region including Wairau River for an excellent lunch. Phil was a very friendly and knowledgeable fellow who offered a mine of information, but he didn't swamp us. What also impressed me was his offer to take us to vineyards that would give us tastings of our preferred wines, which he then did. We appreciated the selection of vineyards chosen and the very professionally run tasting sessions.

Thank you, Phil. We recommend your day tour to anyone in the area who is interested in learning more about Marlborough wine.

Thanks for taking the time to review our tour. Great to hear that you really enjoyed our personalised approach where we alter the tastings to your tastes on the day. There's nothing cookie cutter about our tours! thanks

Gavin, our host for the day, was friendly and engaging from the start. He got to know all 5 of the couples on the day separately within the first 10 minutes of the first winery and helped introduce everyone to each other. The tour consisted of 6 different vineyards that all had great wines on offer with a good variety to try. Gavin explained everything really well when needed and offered a lot more than other wine tour hosts we’ve had before. Would definitely recommend booking this tour as it’s a great intro to New Zealand wines and you’ll definitely come away with at least one bottle of wine that you love!

Our wine tour and tasting ran efficiently from pick to drop off at the hotel 6 hours later . Our driver, Dean, gave both a relaxed and informative commentary on what we were all experiencing . It was a good kiwi laid back view of a key region for NZ winemaking . As well as being enjoyable it was a real eye opener to see that Malborough is starting to some excellent , value for money , varietals that are not Sauvignon Blanc . Therefore i not only enjoyed the day but learnt a fair bit as well. Thanks Dean and your tour company

A thoroughly enjoyable experience. Dean was a humorous and informative guide who could swing between wine snob and regular human with ease. The relationships he’s fostered with the winery’s we visited ensured an excellent reception at each winery. The small group size made this such a personal service as opposed to a faceless number like a lot of tours. Dean was flexible with our final visit being to Moa brewery to accomodate the non winos. I could not recommend this tour highly enough! Money well spent.

Absolutely wonderful day out thanks to Marlborough Wine Tours.

We visited 5 wineries and a chocolate shop, and were able to try a real variety of wines. The third winery was also a lunch stop (St Claire’s). This meal was absolutely delicious.

Phil was great, and tailored the day to what we wanted e.g incorporating a trip to Cloudy Bay as it is my dad’s favourite wine, and taking us to the chocolate shop because of my sweet tooth!!

Couldn’t recommend this tour company more, it is the personal touches that mean the most!

Our guide NIk picked us up in Picton at 9:20 and by 10:30 we were a group of five copacetic couples already drinking wine. Nik was very good at herding us and giving us relevant and interesting information. She clearly likes what she does.

We had six stops: Framingham, Hunter, Saint Clair, Allan Scott, Jackson, and Fromm. All different, all interesting. My wife and I don’t really like the Sauvignon Blanc they make in Marlborough (too acidic for our tastes), but many bordered on acceptable. The Pinot Noirs were uniformly excellent, however.

We are very glad we booked this tour, and we highly recommend it to all!

Had a great wine tour with Phil today. I really enjoyed learning about the Marlborough region, it’s wine history and the wine offered at each of the cellar doors. Would definitely do again and recommend to anyone who is travelling to the region, and looking for an experience that is very much tailored to the area. I would also like to say a huge thank you to Phil for making the tour such an enjoyable experience.

I had read the reviews and heard the compliments about Phil so we were very happy when he arrived to pick us up! We were lucky to have our own private tour for the day and Phil was great company. He was incredibly knowledgeable and great fun. He had clearly thought about where to take us, where would be a good introduction to Marlborough wines, where would be a lovely place for lunch and some really beautiful boutique wineries. Not the usual type of wine tour where you get dragged to commercial wineries with no thought whatsoever to the day ahead. He knew when to hang back and give us space but also showed a genuine interest in what we thought. He even took us to the chocolate factory as my partner has a very sweet tooth! Thanks for a great day Phil!!
