A fun glimpse behind the scenes
We really enjoyed the tour. My son is an avid LOTR fan, so it was great to see some of the props used in the films. The staff made the tour fun and the gift shop offered a huge range of products. There is no coffee shop and it's a bit out of the way, so eat first. We would return.

      Great tour
Great tour. Was great seeing some of the LOTR props and costumes and learning a bit more about the work that goes on behind the scenes. Shout out to James for being a great guide!

      Great guide, knowledgeable and entertaining
Amazing tour. Our guide Taylor was knowledgeable, funny and entertaining. Who knew the range of films they have been involved with. We’re going to have to go back and watch them all. Well worth a visit.

A great visit behind Middle Earth
What a fantastic visit! The different rooms of Wētā creations and the ability to see people working as we walked around was great. After the tour, we had scheduled a sculpting class located down the street from the cave. The staff member leading the course was informative, patient (especially with the one younger member of the class) and was positive and made suggestions to everyone as he circulated. We had originally hoped for the leather working session (not many of them each week) but the sculpting class was better than expected. At every point, every staff member we came across was friendly, wanting to help, and overall represented Wētā in the way that you’d want them to when no one was watching. Well worth the visit (not just if you love the Lord of the Rings movies)

A great experience, even if you are not a Lord of the Rings enthusiast!
This is a great experience. I am a self-confessed Lord of the Rings enthusiast but my wife is not, and she still had a good time. Don’t come here if you are expecting to be able to wonder through the actual workshops taking photographs of props being made. However, the tour which lasts about 90 minutes does give you a really good idea about what WETA does and you do get to see into the workshops and get to pick up some props which were used in the films. So they have the actual Sauron’s armour and the actual Sting sword (some readers of this will have no idea what I’m talking about!). Our guide was called Flynn who was very engaging and a self-confessed nerd. He had a BA in film animation I think. So he knew all about the films and was able to point out various things which were used not only in Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit but in lots of other movies. He had all the information at his fingertips but managed to pass it on with enthusiasm rather than nerdiness! Basically you walk around a series of rooms with artefacts on the walls some of which you can pick up and photograph (so there are some photographic restrictions which are understandable). From time to time videos from the founders for the Studios pop-up and tell you information about the process of model making. They also take you through a number of stages in making masks, weapons etc and Flynn demonstrated the process on real proof. There were also a couple of Model makers who talked about how you can make models at home. All in all it was a great experience. Also it’s suitable for all ages – there was a family with small children who really enjoyed themselves with a treasure hunt theme going through the tour. Definitely recommend.

      Highly recommend
Guide was amazing. Videos were interesting. Was good being able to hold some of the swords and chain mail. The tin foil demonstration was probably the best bit - just would have liked longer to create. Would have liked more hands on but other than that was amazing.

Not a behind the scenes studio tour
Disappointing as we saw no craftsmen except for a man fashioning models from aluminum foil There were a few props you could handle. Insight of crafting was from a video. Location is inconvenient and I felt like I wasted a half day. Least fav thing we did. My time was better spent at TePapa, Zoolandia, Beehive tour of capitol, Wellington Museum, Botanical Gardens.

      Good stuff
Worth the money. The bus driver to and out of the location was awesome and the tour itself was interesting. It didn't dive into much details but as a general glimpse of the studio's work this was great!

      Very informative and interesting tour
We booked the last tour of the day but Emma was very enthusiastic, informative, friendly and entertaining. We enjoyed the areas we could see and were impressed with what can be done with tin foil. It was a great opportunity to see costumes, weapons and have an insight into what it takes to make a film. Parking was easy on street nearby. It was also suggested we take a look at the Roxy cinema. A lovely art deco building with Gandulf and Thunderbirds on display (at this time)

      Friendly and accommodating!
We had a lovely time with our tour guide Mia who seemed genuinly excited to share the tour with us, and shared some lovely stories with us aside from the tour speeches she had to give. Really made us feel welcome. Getting to handle so many props and meet some exceptionally talented artists that were so keen to share their crafts with the tour was a favorite for us! They were also so accommodating with providing a wheel chair for us while we were on the tour, we just called ahead to ask if one was available during our booking and they were happy to provide it. So simple and really made my partner able to enjoy the tour.

A must do in Wellington - great value!
Booked thinking it was just LOTR orientated, but it totally exceeded expectations - the amount of films they have worked on, and the amount of props you recognise is insane. We were lucky enough to be in a really small group, with Tom as our guide. If you get him, you’re lucky, he is a legend, and so enthusiastic about the whole place and its background. It honestly doesn’t seem long enough at the end, you want to stay and play with all the props. If you are lucky to meet the guy who does the tinfoil modelling (forgot his name sorry), he is the coolest guy, and very inspiring in his view towards the creative process! All in all - book this if you are in wellington!!

You have to take a look behind the work of these magicians!
As a fan of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies i was so thrilled to take a look behind the scenes - it was really great fun! To see the complete costume of Sauron: just pure chills!

      Weta Workshop is Wonderful!
Weta Workshop in Wellington was well worth a visit! The tour was well organized, enthusiastic guide, great displays, and an opportunity to touch and interact with the movie props. It was fun, and inspired creativity

Not enough superlatives to describe the actual experience and the passion and enthusiasm of both our bus driver and guide. An hour and a half went so fast and I didn’t want it to end. I found meeting the artists fascinating and inspiring and the hands on activities added an extra dimension to the tour. The video interspersed with our actual guide was also interesting and informative - I personally loved the story of how Wētā started and how it got its name. I am telling everyone to do the tour - and I am not a person who generally enjoys guided tours!!
My husband is hearing impaired and he was able to hear and appreciate most of what was said and presented. Guide wore a microphone and videos were captioned - really appreciated this aspect. Thank you for presenting a magical world of talented artisans and a vision that became a reality. Loves every minute of it. I wish I was young and talented and could get a job there !!! 😀😀

Annie (hope I spelled it right) was a great guide, she had to deal with a party of 18 (noisy , distracting and generally a pain) and she handled them poise and professionalism . Great job. Made the experience great for the rest of the attendees. Thanks

Really fun tour and the provided transportation included some commentary about Wellington, WĒTĀ and The Lord of the Rings. We had kids ages 2-13, and everyone enjoyed the tour. Only half of us watched the Lord of the Rings movies, so some of the commentary about the movies on the guided transfer didn’t translate - but it was still interesting and very convenient. Our transfer guide/driver was excellent too. The tour at WĒTĀ was fun and engaging. It was paced well - and our tour guide was passionate about the company. Everyone had a good time. However, there were a few images and moments that were too scary for our little ones. The guide was quick to divert their attention to something more fun to do. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Wellington. We wished we had more time in the city to visit Wētā’s Galipoli exhibit inside the Te Papa museum after the tour ended, but we had to get back to the ship.

Tip: If you are arriving by cruise ship, the cruise shuttles no longer drop you close to the guided transfer pick-up since the Wellington I-site moved. Give yourself at least 20 minutes to walk to the pick-up location.

This is a must do activity if you’re interested in special effects or the Lord of the Rings, or you’re just a ‘movie buff’. It was good, although it wasn’t what I expected. You can’t take photos so there’s not a lot to show for your visit. You’re guided around maybe 5-6 rooms where props are on display your guide tells you more about them. However it’s not a ‘behind the scenes’ tour so you don’t get to see a lot of the artists at work (apart from a glimpse into the master wordsmith’s area which was fascinating.)

The only area where you can take photos is an odd final room where they demonstrate tinfoil modelling - and there’s the obligatory ‘dressing up photo opportunity’ here too so you can buy an image as you leave.

I came away a little bit underwhelmed. Seeing the costumes and swords from Lord of the Rings was great, but the overall experience was a bit slow paced (some rooms took too long, others I would have liked more time in).

You walk around with maybe 20 other people and a guide.

Transfer from the city was on time and the driver provided an interesting commentary on the way to the Weta Workshop. We thoroughly enjoyed this interactive tour to see the highly skilled and talent work produced at this Workshop for Lord of the Rings and many other movies.
We were also lucky to see the chief sword maker at work the day we visited.

We did this tour with Lester as our guide.. he was probably our favorite local guide during 2 week trip around Australia and New Zealand - very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and interesting! Great job Lester - we enjoyed when he showed as around in the park/forest where LOTR scenes had been filmed! The WETA workshop is super cool for movie buffs - be aware - there ARE some areas where you are allowed to touch items and take photos, and others where you are not.. it was fun to see one of Peter Jackson's actual Oscars though! (you can't touch that one!) - also - don't miss the super enthusiastic lady who sculpts using aluminum foil, and teaches you how to do the same - hands on! Overall - a very fun experience. Recommended.

I loved it! I really enjoyed our tour guide and learning about the expansive scope of Weta Workshops in the entertainment industry today. I loved being in the room with all the incredible replicas from my favorite films!

There are public transit options for the transfer also. If you have your own car, I recommend driving there yourself so you can explore the area around the studio or make stops along the beautiful, scenic beaches along the way.

The guided tour was nice with a very friendly driver telling us a few bits of historical information and stopping off at an old cinema along the way. The tour itself was alittle underwhelming, lots of videos instead of interactive content, spent the whole 90min tour standing. I would only recommend this tour if you are really into the making of the props and costumes. I personally would not do this tour again

Kia ora James, Thanks so much for taking your time to leave us a review. I am sorry to hear that you found the tour underwhelming, and that it had a lot of videos. Our goal is to have all of our guests actively engaged throughout the entire 90 minute duration of the tour. Was there a specific area of the tour where you found it underwhelming, or that there were too many screens? Feedback like yours helps us continuously improve our experience for future guests. Thanks again for your time and all the best, Caitlin

Great experience if you’re into Lord of the Rings and movies/movie making. Our driver set the mood with Hobbit score in the car, and our Hobbit-looking host, Hazel, did a great job giving us a tour. If you’re in Wellington on vacation, this should defo be on your itinerary.
