We did the combo Weta Workshop tour and Thunderbirds tour and it was excellent. You don't have to love the Hobbit, Avatar or Thunderbirds to appreciate the skill and creativity behind the films/shows. Husband loves Thunderbirds and he was like a kid in a candy store during this part of the tour.
And you get to touch stuff and swing swords around (but only when told you can - the original stuff is off limits).
Well worth the time and money.

Kia ora medievalscot, We are pleased that you both enjoyed your visit to Weta! We agree that you don't have to be a super fan to appreciate the creativity and artistry on show here. Thank you for taking the time to leave your 5* review, we hope to welcome you back another time. Cheers, Amy

We did the combination Tour this morning. What a thrill to see all the "workings" after watching the movies for many years. Our guide Dan, was so knowledgeable and just a total joy!! Fun and inclusive. You really need to do this tour when in Wellington.

Shout to Dan for an awesome tour. He's very insightful on LOTR and Weta. He's a great tour guide. His Irish lilt was very soothing to all the kids on the tour - young and old!

This is not just for Hobbit fans. Just visualising the work involved in making the realistic props is an eye opener. Visiting the set of Thunderbirds are go was fun.

Interesting tours. Guide very enthusiastic. First tour a little overcrowded really. Would have got more, if there had been less people. Sometimes difficult to hear the host, and hard to see. But interesting never the less. The second part was the thunderbirds tour. This was better for us, as there were significantly less people, and therefore there was more of an opportunity to participate. There was a small bus which transported us between locations. Back at the shop, it was really overcrowded, so hard to feel comfortable. Still, recommend the experience. The Weta Workshop is very interesting. Perhaps just avoid school hokiday periods ?

I took the 'Thunderbirds Are Go' tour after being disappointed to find all the other tours for the main Weta Cave Workshop were booked out with a cruise ship in port. (Take note: I should have checked first on line for availability and bookings!)

Weta Workshop founder Richard Taylor's early fascination with the original Thunderbirds show has led to the updating of the TV series using new sets and technology instead of the original puppets. The concept art, plus the design and fabrication of the miniature sets from household "junk" were fascinating and were well explained by the tour guide. I was pleasantly surprised that photography was permitted despite signs to the contrary.

Hi Keith F, Thank you for visiting us, great news that you did check out our Miniatures Stage Tour, even though you weren't able to do the Weta Cave Workshop Tour. Glad you enjoyed finding out about the concept art, designs, miniatures and our methods of "junk building"! Hope to see you in future for our Weta Cave Workshop tour :) Cheers, Lolly

Very interesting. Also did the prop building tour which was informative. The cafe on the next corner has the best food and is a must to add to your visit.

Weta Workshop was easily my #1 pick and most memorable experience. The tour shows you how Weta Workshop designs and manufactures effects for films like The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia and others. I made advanced reservations for the Combo Tour -- highly recommended -- since it allows you to experience the 2 most popular tours in one package.

In the first part of the tour, we got to go inside a converted area of Weta Workshop, which houses realistic (and often creepy!) props, costumes, creatures and vehicles created for the big screen. But probably the highlight of the tour was getting to wander through Manufacture Alley, an interactive section where you can learn all about the artistry and craft of the different roles involved in the film industry such as costume design or robotics. Just as the first part was about to wrap, we got to meet a Weta crew member who took us through the process of making props for different movies he worked on.

In the 2nd part, you'll explore the miniature sets created for the TV series Thunderbirds Are Go. Okay, so my husband and I were pretty much the only people on our tour who never heard of this series. But apparently, it's based on a 1960's British sci-fi show that featured puppets characters on miniature sets. However, Weta has modernized the concept by featuring a blend of digital characters along with physical sets.
