the half day tour of Lord of the Rings was great.
The tour was worth it, the guide and shuttle driver was really good and knew his history and information about the area. TripAdvisor was about half the price as it would have cost to go through the cruise event. He got us back to the ship in plenty of time. Thanks

The whole day was superb. Everything went smoothly and we were entertained the whole day. Everything was clearly thought through. Grant was our guide and he was absolutely fantastic! Full of knowledge, humour and good vibes. A genuinely nice guy. 100% recommend the full day tour!

One of the best tours I’ve been on. Having someone with first hand experiences was a bonus. The tour of Weta was excellent.

      THE tour for LOTR fans
We had a wonderful expert with Grant as our guide. WETA story is such a great example of long term success. Seeing the locale for LOTR was also a fun experience.

      Good Enjoyable Tour
We really enjoyed our afternoon. We were picked up by Laura and alas, we were the only two on the tour (that's Covid for you! - hopefully things will pick up). We really enjoyed our tour - Weta Workshop is very interesting and our guide Emily was very enthusiastic. We also did the Thunderbirds tour which was one of the highlights for us. Laura then took us to Mt Victoria and showed us some LotR film locations and the scenes that were shot there - Laura was very friendly and knowledgable and made the afternoon an enjoyable one.

      Awesome Knowledgeable Guide and Tour
For any Lord of the Rings fans; I highly recommend doing a half day tour with Rover Rings Tour. We were picked up by Phil the very friendly and charismatic guide, who really knows his stuff not only about LOTR but also Wellington City. Firstly we were taken to the top of Mt Victoria Lookout and where Phil shared some interesting history facts about the city including earthquake history and he showed us where fault lines can be seen from the lookout. Then we headed to see a few filming locations where the LOTR Fellowship of the ring movie was shot - including a very well known scene: “Get off the Road”. All complete with amazing facts and stories about the movies from our guide - who clearly is a big fan of LOTR too! Some great photo opportunities here too. We then jumped back into the big comfortable van and headed over to the Weta Workshop in Miramar, all with great commentary facts from Phil on the way about the cast of LOTR, where other locations out of Wellington are and the NZ filming industry. We arrived at Weta Workshops, greater by some Cave Trolls. This is where all the NZ film magic happens. We got to see some great costumes, weapons, and other props used in many different films - not just NZ ones. We even managed to get a wee class in how to make things/props etc at home - which meant all Mr 7 wanted to do afterwards was stop at the shops to get some tin foil to make things back at the motel - Perfect! There’s a great gift shop at the workshop and the staff there know their stuff too! We finished off with a scenic drive through Oriental Bay on your way back to the city, all again commentated by Phil’s great knowledge of the area, including food recommendations and other activities. If your thinking of going on this tour, do it within your first or second day as it is a LOTR Tour, but it is also partly a guided tour of Wellington from a local! Thank you Rover Tours and a special thanks to Phil for your knowledge and charismatic friendly nature which definitely made the tour fun, factual, and with some great laughs on the way too! Cheers Tori

      Beautiful morning (lucky weather)
It was an awesome experience, there are so many LOTR locations around Wellington... The guide, Laura, did a great job, she is very knowledgeable about the movies and the areas we visited and she is fun to talk to! Highly recommended!

      Interesting Tour
Our guide, Samuel, picked us up shipside, so it was quite convenient. He shared interesting info about Wellington as we drove to our first stop at Mt. Victoria where he showed us several sites where filming of the Lord of the Rings movies took place, accompanied with photos of the actual movie scenes. The visit to Weta was led by one of their tour guides, an energetic young lady. She showed us displays of various props, costumes, automatronics, etc. When we finished that tour, Samuel showed us the various buildings that make up Weta productions I'm Mirimar. It was a fun tour.

Excellent tourguide on Lord of the Rings Location tour
Wayne with Rover Lord Of The Rings Tours was a great tourguide. He was outgoing and easy to talk to. He was knowledgable of the movies and talked about his time as an extra on one of the films which provided an interesting perspective. He was quite friendly and the tour felt like friends having a day out rather than a more structured experience.

Fantastic locations and information with Irish Dave on Half Day Location tour
We did the Half Day Locations Tour and we had an absolute blast. Our guide, "Irish Dave" as he called himself, was a fountain of knowledge with tons of interesting titbits about not only the filming of LOTR but also about Wellington and current going's on. We started in the morning and by the time we got to lunch (we were provided with muffins and tea) we had seen where the hobbits found their short-cut to mushrooms and hid from the Ringwraight. We also visited Rivendell, Isengard and one of the many River Anduin Locations. We had an absolute blast with Dave who even provided us with props for a little wizard garden stroll.

      Most enjoyable
We were taken around to the WETA works by a most affable and pleasant guide. We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the magic of movie making which was reinforced by visiting Mount Victoria and the lookout over the town. Most enjoyable and good value for money

      Amazing and surreal
This was awesome. You get to see some of the places from the first Lord of the Rings movie. You get to sit in the tree where Frodo and Sam smoke some pipe leaves. The tour ends with a visit to the Weta workshop which did a lot of the stuff for the movies. The guided tour at the workshop is at extra cost. A movie about the workshop is free.

You will love this tour if you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings movies! Seeing the locations filmed around Wellington and, of course, Weta Studios make it clear how much effort and genius went into the movies!

Our tour guide was Axl, who was a very fun, cool guy that was as big a fan of the movies as we were! The best tour guides are ones where at the end of the day you know a lot about the tour, but also feel you’ve spent a day with a friend. Axl was just that. He’s known as Samwise the Tour Guide, and I can see that. But, I like a bit more in common with Radagast. Behind a funny, unassuming exterior, there is a lot more creativity and power than meets the eye.

Lunch was great, too! It was served family-style and in a lovely setting!

I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, and wanted to do a tour to see the main filming locations in Wellington and Upper Hutt. This tour was excellent, we started with the trip up to the top of Mount Victoria. The guide took us to a different viewing spot at the top, one that many tourists don't know about, which was nice to get different views of Wellington. Then we went inside the forest and saw the locations where they filmed a shortcut to mushrooms, the hobbits hiding from the Nazgul and being pursued by the Nazgul. The guide was great, he told us lots of behind the scenes information and took some great photos of us.
Then we did a private tour of Weta workshop, which was excellent and very interesting. We had a lovely lunch and visited the locations in Upper Hutt and Kaitoke regional park where they filmed close up scenes of the Fellowship in the boats going down the river Anduin, as well as where they built the Rivendell set and filmed those scenes. Finally, we saw the gardens and park where they filmed the close up shots of Gandalf and Saruman at Rivendell. We got some excellent photos with props!

This tour was amazing! As a lot of Lord of the Rings scenes were filmed in the Wellington area, we were able to see quite a lot of them. Our tour guide, Irish Dave, was extremely knowledgeable on the series and had a lot of fun facts about the making of the trilogy (as well as the Hobbit trilogy). We started by going up to Mt. Victoria to see views of the city, and then down into the surrounding forests to see where some of the Shire scenes were filmed. From there, we also were able to see Weta Workshop where a lot of the special effects and weaponry are created for not only LOTR but other films as well. We were provided with lunch, and then we saw part of the Anduin River and ended the day with Rivendell. It is a Must-See for any LOTR fan! Thank you Irish Dave for such a wonderful experience!

This tour was great, you start out with the half day tour going through Wellington city and it's closest tour sights think; "A shortcut to mushrooms". Then you head to the Weta Workshop which was honestly a dream come true. So much fun and plenty of great stuff to purchase as a reminder of your visit. Then you leave the half dayers and travel out to the Hutt Valley. Bear in mind that there are a few locations that are obscure in the films (hence why you'd want to be a big fan) and you have to use your imagination to see them as they were in the films. But even if you're not a huge fan, it's still a wonderful way to get out and see some of New Zealand (whilst dressing up and brandishing a sword). There was a selection of dishes for lunch so all tastes were catered for, and the food was welcome after a morning of trekking around Middle Earth. The transport is all arranged and if you're lucky you'll get the accompanying soundtrack played for each place you visit.

The tour was insightful and entertaining. Grant was a fantastic host and guide who not only kept the LOTR tour informative but also extremely interesting through trivia questions, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and a wonderful sense of humour. The lunch and then the Weta Caves experience was phenomenal and will always be cherished. Thanks Rovers Tour Group and Grant for creating such a wonderful experience. I wish them all the luck and success in the new year 2021☺️

This tour was just what I was looking for; a bit of a tour of Wellington, some beautiful sites, and all tied together with LOTR (my favorites were the sites on Mt. Vic). The lunch was great also at a restaurant the tour group just started using. The van we used was very comfortable the whole time (not like some other tours) and overall it was just a great day. I had to say that I felt bad for those who only did the half day....they missed out on the great lunch and some beautiful scenery.

First part of the day was good, visiting some of Wellingtons viewpoints and then the forest where some iconic LOTR filming took place. The Weta workshop was awesome! Visiting the Miramar film production area was good.

Then it kinda went downhill. The 'Hobbit themed lunch' was lunch in a cafe, was completely unthemed and to be honest the choices were either breakfast (at 1.30pm) , chicken tenders and chips or burger and chips.

Then we went travelling around some other film locations which again was good, especially Rivendale.

The lunch really let the day down actually. For £160 per person for the tour, I expected much more than a burger in a cafe and a can of Coke.

Hi, Sorry for the late reply. In response to your review i can say i totally agree with your view. :) I had a great hobbit themed menu prepared to go this summer as i advertise on my own website and these platforms. Unfortunately due to a issue with lunch provider this has not been in place as i planned. In the past the menu has been very good and themed as i like it. The provider has promised to fix this with a new menu coming out this week. In the past we have prided ourselves on our lunch offerings. Anyway, i am glad you enjoyed the your overall as do all our reviews because we always use professional guides to make the day as fun and smooth no matter what happens.

The tour was well done - I have no faults against the tour company or the locations we visited. However, Weta Workshop was a major disappointment as a LOTRs fan. Really felt like a tourist trap. The 90 min tour could have been completed in 30. They make you stand in each room for extended periods waiting for the next one to open up, and the rooms are a major bore. The tinfoil folding room?? - what?? No pics allowed of the few LOTR items either.

We took the full day LOTR tour in Wellington. It visited the Weta Workshop and several locations around Wellington which were used in the filming of the various LOTR movies. Our guide, Wyeth, was informative and gave a real behind-the-scenes view of the movie development. (He was involved on the sets during filming and is a huge fan.) He accompanied the location visits with still shots of the scenes so you could see how Peter Jackson transformed a particularly location to be Middle Earth. The only downside was that lunch was mediocre.

We had an amazing tour with the owner! He was gracious to accept our new ship times and squeezed in as much we could. Had his own experience with being in "The Two Towers" so had a bunch of great exclusive trivia and insight. We saw a bunch of filming locations, toured the costume/set workshop museum, had an amazing lunch, and took great pics. So happy they worked with our changed ship docking schedule!
