About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- tomlL5295OS0 contributionsBest tour Tauranga - book directWonderful trip with Wicked Wonders. Our guide was a fount of knowledge and gave us a personalised trip. Lots to see and experience. Jet boating was thrilling and informative. We booked privately - not through the cruise ship and had no worries with return at right time. Would recommend more tourists do so. Lots of different experiences - would recommend.Written 26 January 2025

- downsizing090 contributionsNot a trustworthy tour operatorI would have like to gone on this tour. We booked this tour on May 14, 2024 for a Cruise ship tour on December 31, 2024. 7 months in advance. We did not find out that they had cancelled our tour the day before, December 30, for we only found out when we got off the cruise ship the morning of 31st. When I asked what tour they have put us on, in lieu of, the reply was they refunded us our money. All tours where now full, and not available. This tour company feels it is acceptable behaviour to cancel on such short notice without supplying options for another tour. Cruise ship tours, most people on cruise ship to not have wifi. This is not a company that cruise passengers should trust, that they will have a tour for the day it was the book for. Try Zealandier Tours insteadWritten 6 January 2025

This was an amazing day trip to Rotorua! We visited the geothermal site and got to know all about the Māori people with our local guide explaining things and seeing a cultural show. We also got to see the geysers erupt and observed Kiwi birds. It was so rewarding knowing that half of the ticket price went to scholarships for the Māori students. Afterwards we visited a redwood forest that was just spectacular! Even stopped at a Kiwi fruit farm on the way out. Our Wicked Wonders guide (female) was friendly and perfect.

I don’t know where to begin. Lucky for us—Nicolle was our tour guide and she was fantastic! She provided plenty of history and current information about the Māori and the area. It was a busy day with well-planned stops. I’ve shared the day on my family blog and it was just so full of photos and good information that Nicolle provided. We’d been a little concerned that the Māori demonstration would be “contrived”, but it was enjoyable and authentic enough. Only one suggestion for the performers — would be to use a microphone when talking to us from the stage. The tour of the cultural center and the artist trainees was fascinating! And of course, the entire geothermal walk was so worthwhile. I loved this area of Tauranga and Rotorua and will recommend this to anyone we know who will be visiting New Zealand. We are so glad we didn’t miss this tour!!

Nicolee was very professional and took great care of us during our 6 hour tour. First she took us to the beach for a photo stop and even offered to take family photos for us with the surfers in the background. Next she took us through the Main Street of the town and we got to see all the cute shops (and lots of gorgeous snap dragons lining the roads).
Then We went to Te Puia for a short lunch (make sure to get the carrot cake — It’s amazing!!!!!) on our own , followed by a cultural dance performance by the New Zealand people. After that we got to see the school where they do wood carvings and make jewelry.
Next was a quick view of a kiwi bird — a real treat. After that we took a slow walk down to the geyser and bubbling mud pots. The geyser put on a good show for us. They did have a little train to take us back up the hill to the main complex. I appreciated that I did not have to walk back up the hill.
Nicolee then made sure we had a last minute chance to do gift shopping at Te Paia and then she took us back to the boat with an hour to spare before the ship was supposed to take off.
During the drive to and from Te Puia she imparted info to us and answered any questions the 11 of us in the group had. She made sure our personal needs were met during the day. Wonderful tour guide!

Excellent tour for cruise ship passengers without the premium price or a similar tour sells out! Tour runs from 9am-3pm. Russell was very responsive to our pre-tour inquiries especially regarding return time being close to our ship’s “all aboard” time, and pickup/drop-off easily located just outside the port entry gate. Small group was a big bonus, and several quick stops along the way provided great opportunity to learn about New Zealand’s version of Bondi Beach, the kiwi frui industry, Rotiti Lake and the geothermal pools in Rotorua. Te Puia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the geyser (although she can be unpredictable - it’s not Old Faithful in Yellowstone). Even quite fortunate to see one of the 2 kiwi birds in the conservation center (no photos or videos allowed in the near-dark facility). Prompt return to ship ahead of “all aboard” call. Definitely recommend this tour!

We loved this tour, it covered the things that are quintessentially New Zealand. The Maori guides throughout the tour provided an in depth understanding of culture and history and the significance of TePuia. The concert performers were very professional and skilled. The tour providers Wicked Wanders (Russell and Nicoli) were
excellent and provided extra insight into Rotorua and Tauranga.

The trip could have been nice and interesting. However, we were unlucky with the other members of the group. Everyone was going in a different direction and the driver/guide was busy running after/looking for someone most of the time. We have never experienced anything like this in a small group before.

We had a great day visiting Rotorua, experiencing the cultural show and walking around the fantastic geothermal area at Te Puia. The geysers and mud pools were amazing to see from the viewing platforms and paths through the area. On the way back to the ship we stopped at the redwood forest to have a look and take photos.
Organisation of our tour was excellent. Communication was very good from booking onwards and our lovely guide Nicolee was waiting for us when we disembarked from the ship. Minibus was clean and comfortable. It was good going with a small group tour as we could be a bit more flexible with the schedule and were able to stop for photos at a couple of the pretty spots in Tauranga on the way to Rotorua.
All in all, it was an excellent day and we wouldn’t hesitate to book with this company again.
