- Curiosity375930136300 contributionsUnguided harbor tour -- not a nature cruise at allWhat was billed as a two-and-a-half hour winter nature cruise was an hour and a half harbor cruise. We did see one seal and a few common birds, but these were all on Mount Maunganui -- no reason to be on the boat.Written 17 July 2024
- boph20240 contributionsThe BEST Marine Biology Educational Trip ever!We were lucky enough to arrange an educational marine biology trip with Dolphin Seafaris and it was the best! We saw; a sunfish, an albatross, a mako shark, a giant leatherback turtle (that came really close to the boat for ten minutes and then it waved goodbye to us)! Penguins, eagle rays, stingrays (snorkelling), and a hammerhead shark. The Dolphin Seafaris crew look after everything. They are very knowledgeable and make everyone feel welcome.Written 14 March 2024

- JJBdt20140 contributionsAMAZING Experience with DolphinsBest tour we have done in New Zealand so far. We had the chance to see over 50 dolphins (probably closer to 100) and swim with them (without being intrusive - this is a eco/smart tour). The staff/guides are super friendly and kept spoting animals for us on the way back!!: albatros, seal and orcas!! Thank you to the crew!Written 17 June 2020
- bronwynb1800 contributionsAbsolutely bloody amazingI got this for myself and my daughter for Christmas and it was truely the most amazing day! We both loved it so much! We didn’t get to swim with the dolphins but we saw a pod with over 100 dolphins. Seriously worth every dollar! The staff are extremely well informed and happy to chat. They assisted my daughter in the water when we got to swim with a seal so that I too could get the full experience. Such an amazing day! Highly recommend!Written 30 January 2019
- traceysl90 contributionsThis is not "swimming" with dolphinsI agree with BB1975 review in regards to the so called swimming part. Not what we or others who I spoke with thought it would be. Very unpleasant experience being dragged behind in the boat wake, practically being drowned. This is not swimming with dolphins by any stretch of the imagination. Nor did we see any. Stick to the viewing, forget getting in the water. The day was fine, the boat was roomy, we did see 3 very small pods of dolphins, that's just the luck of the draw. The female staff were lovely but the skipper was a bit of a pillock. I wouldn't recommend this experience to others.Written 14 January 2019
- Jacqui S0 contributionsGreat day out and lovely crewWe went out with Dolphin Seafaris last week. The crew were great, very knowledgeable about Dolphins and the local area and excellent with all the children on board. We saw 4 pods of dolphins, 2 pods of common dolphins and 2 pods of bottle nose dolphins during the 5 hr trip. Fortunately we got to see pods with babies which was really special but it also means you are not allowed to swim when there are babies in the pod. The crew tried hard to find us a pod we could swim with but no luck. It didn’t really spoil the experience at all as we really got quite close to all the pods and had a great opportunity to see them in their natural environment. Thanks to the crew for a great experience.Written 6 January 2019
- 952kristinb0 contributionsPerfect! We had an awesome day with a very friendly and professional crew. They knew so much about New Zeeland wildlife and water creatures in particular. There were plenty of snacks and drinks and great service. It was hard to find dolphins this day and the hopes to see any slowly faded. And then finally!! The crew is communicating with other boats and over the radio they succeeded to locate a pod of 25-30 common dolphins. They were really fast ones (hunting for food) but we were lucky enough to both see them and swim with them! A lifelong dream came through!Written 4 January 2019
- Tmxwl0 contributionsMrsBoat was nice and efficient, felt really close up with the dolphins. Seen heaps of pods, crew were all nice.Written 2 January 2019
- joebloomy0 contributionsIncredible, one of best experiences ever!We went out on a Saturday morning, sunny day with pretty calm waters. After a couple hours searching we reached a pod of 200 common dolphins, it was incredible and we hung off the back of the boat heads under water to see dolphins swimming literally a metre from us. Then we found humpback whales shortly after, a mother and calf, that gave us some incredible tail slaps and slight jumps out of the water. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience!Written 17 November 2018
- frogfriendly0 contributionsPhenomenal experience!I have always wanted to get up close and personal with dolphins as I adore them. However never wanted to visit them in captivity as did not wish to be helping fund industry that stops these super intelligent and magnificent creatures from being free. As a bit of a landlubber it was a daunting thought going out into the ocean to visit dolphins in their home. BUT Dolphin Seafaris led by Captain Cameron and wonderful crew Cille, Sarah and Murillo made my husband and I feel very safe, comfortable and welcome. The depth of knowledge of the Captain and crew, and their willingness to share it made the day not only super enjoyable but educational as well. After approximately an hour or so we were able to locate a few Common dolphins who took us to their pod of approximately 20 dolphins. The dolphins stayed and played with us for the whole time that NZ law allows. Dolphin Seafaris provided all the equipment (wetsuit, snorkel & goggles) needed and I was able to be in the water and swim with them twice. It was just as phenomenal from the boat as the dolphins seemed to enjoy our company as much as we loved theirs!! Those folk that decided not to swim seemed to have just as a great as time as me. Once our time was up and by law we had to leave the pod - what was really lovely was the pod following us for some time and playing in the boat's waves until they eventually peeled off and went about their own FREE and wonderful way. Definitely one of the best things I have ever experienced and I thank all at Dolphin Seafaris for making it so wonderful, memorable and an absolute joy. Thank you Thank you Thank youWritten 14 November 2018
- Schlumpf20 contributionsWorst trip in 4 weeks NZLSpent 6 hours with full speed on a poor boat with unfriendly staff staff and an incapable captain. We finally found a group of dolphins, but the swimming experience is poor compared to other providers. If you have the freedom to choose, you should go for dolphin swimming in Kaikoura. This is so much better than this rip-off by Dolphin Safaris.Written 16 April 2018
- Waleed S0 contributionsGreat adventure and unforgettable experience! We had a great time with Cameron! The trip was memorable and we had almost 100 dolphins swimming around us. Nothing like this we’ve ever seen!!Written 7 April 2018
- Markus_Ldn0 contributionsSuperb experience with beautiful creaturesOMG, what an amazing experience of beautiful / majestic animals. We thoroughly enjoyed our day with Cameron and his team and the ocean experience with penguins, a sea lion and of course dolphins. Cameron’s updates were very insightful and it was clear, he loves what he does. The swimming part and holding to the handrail wasn‘t our cup of tea but this is very much a personal taste question. We felt it was much nicer to watch the dolphins from the ship. Note, length of the tour is rather indicative and depends on the day and how long it takes to find the dolphins. Our tour ran until 3PM (vs. typical end of 1PM). So don’t pack any other items into your dolphin day!Written 28 March 2018

We went on this tour as part of our honeymoon and loved it. I get sea sick and taking gravol helped about 90% but I still had some unpleasant moments because the boat moves so much, just as a heads up. It was totally worth it though to see the dozens of dolphins jumping around the boat. We have been swimming with dolphins that were penned and there was a sadness to that experience. Knowing that these dolphins are wild and free and that we did not interfere with them in any way was a good feeling. The crew was all awesome as well! We highly recommend this company for this experience.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review.
We are so happy that you decided to see dolphins in the wild where they belong and make the effort even battling through a spell of seasickness to share our passion with us. We hope you had an amazing honeymoon in New Zealand.
Thank you again and we hope to see you again.

Wow, this is just the best day out. The weather was perfect, the staff were great, the skipper of the boat was the best and very informative. The dolphins were playful and happy to play alongside the boat. Those that swam with them behind the boat clearly enjoyed the fabulous opportunity. We even saw some babies with their mums, having a great time playing in the wake of the boat. Such a gorgeous day.

Cille and her amazing team worked their magic and I was able to swim with the dolphins on my actual 40th Birthday in the middle of winter. I took along my mum and sister and we honestly had the best day. Not only did we get to swim and free swim with these beautiful creatures but we saw seals, albatross and to finish off the day orca's in the Tauranga Harbour. Cille and the crew took great care of us and was a prefect sunny winter's day out on the water for 6 hours taking in nature, scenery and the sea breeze. Cille also surprised me after our dolphin swim with a birthday cake and bubbles so I felt very special, it definitely was the icing on the cake. I had always wanted to swim with dolphins and previously had different trips cancel on me due to weather so I was so grateful I was able to do it on my birthday and was definitely a day I will never forget. Thank you so much Cille

We had an incredible experience. We saw the common dolphin, bottle nose dolphin, pseudo orca, blue pinguin, hammerhead shark and even a wandering erect crested pinguin. The crew was very passionate and the atmosphere relaxed.
The swimming with dolphins is not the romantic experience what I think people imagine. It was holding tight onto a bar behind the boat with 8 other people while the boat goes very fast at times to catch up with the dolphins. So it was quite intens and more like waterboarding with dolphins. Still we found it of added value that seafaris provides this additional experience.
Afterwards we were able to buy seafaris t shirts for a very decent price which look awesome.
In our case the dolphins were very curieus and abundant, although the crew admitted that that we were very lucky and that the dolphins are more often not that interested to stay around the boat. So be aware that it is a gamble what sealife you get to see. It is a wide sea and they are wild animals that go where they want to go, as it should be.

Kia Ora, thank you for sharing your incredible experience with us! We're glad to hear that you had the opportunity to encounter such a diverse range of marine life. Our crew is truly passionate about what they do, and we're glad you felt the relaxed atmosphere onboard. We appreciate your honest feedback about the swimming with dolphins experience. While it may not always match the romanticised expectations, we have found that is the best way to experience dolphins in the water. Additionally, we're delighted that you enjoyed the opportunity to purchase Seafaris t-shirts at a reasonable price. Thanks again, the Dolphin Seafaris team.

The tour was extremely well organised. Heavy rain was forecast, so to avoid a bad experience we were contacted to see if we wanted to pull our tour forward by 24hrs, we did. Wonderfully enthusiastic and knowledgable guides. Great sightings of dolphins. Very sadly we could not swim with them on this occasion due to the pod having young babies (conservation rules, quite rightly too). Still I was gutted as this is the experience I’ve been seeking and keep failing. But the tour cannot be faulted for this. Refreshments free on board, and informal Q&A with the guides made this a magical and value for money trip!

I would like to start off by saying this was an horrendous of a trip. Me and my wife expected to be entertained or shown multiple sea animals which were promised by the company, we left the harbour and about 45 minutes later were introduced to dolphins (which were fun for 5 minutes) then the crew proceeded to wander around for the next 5 hours showing us nothing and not taking us back to land. Every passenger was exhausted from being held like a prisoner the entire ride. This was a waste of a day for our holiday. Me and my wife didn’t intend to swim either but a whole bunch of other people did and the crew didn’t let them for an unknown reason. If you do wish to go regardless, download some games on your phone prior to going or taking a deck of cards because you WILL be bored out your mind. Would definitely not recommend, save your money because this is definitely not worth it.

This trip was amazing, SO much better than we could have hoped for. We considered ourselves fortunate just with the trip and our guides, but then when we got to see the many dolphin pods, and got to swim with them swarming around us. Just incredible! We did get to see the lottery fish, so we bought our power ball ticket, and while we didn't win, we definitely consider ourselves amazing winners with this trip.

You two are absolutely superstars. Thank you for your amazing reviews and your incredible enthusiasm and energy. Shame you didn't win the lottery, but a flying fish totally makes up for it. Safe travels and we hope to see you back here in the Bay sometime in the future.

What an amazing experience!! Highly recommend it. We saw hundreds of dolphins (many with their calves and that’s why we couldn’t swim with them ), blue penguins and a leatherback turtle. At some point when I thought we would not spot any dolphins, I was still happy with the outing: the Tauranga port with their massive ships was impressive and it had been fun boat ride with a lovely and super friendly crew. Then they spotted the first of two pods and what a dream! Absolutely Incredible!

The staff were very welcoming and helpful and the boat very comfortable. Although we didn't see dolphins, we did have time watching a Bryde's whale- apparently a very rare sighting, as they are shy creatures. It was a great experience and a wonderful day out in the beautiful Bay.

As a dolphin cruise, this was amazing. We dangled our feet off the bow and boated alongside them as they swam and jumped and played all around us! It was magical. I even touched one with my foot! Definitely the best dolphin sighting of my life. The guides said one of the pods was about 90 dolphins and the other was about 250! There were just so many swimming so close, I had never seen anything like it before. Unbelievable.
As a dolphin swim, it was a bit disappointing (at least to Mom). We thought we were going to be able to jump in and freely swim with the dolphins, but even if we were allowed to, we would have only been permitted to hold onto the back of the boat and put our heads in the water to see them as it pulled us. When I learned that that was all we could do, I wasn’t as sad as my Mom not to be able to “swim” with them. Because, even though we found two HUGE pods of dolphins, we weren’t allowed in the water because there were babies present (NZ law).

Hello, I'm wondering what the maximum capacity is on your tour. I'm not a fan of large crowds of tourists. We'll be in Mount Maunganui for three weeks so looking for a few things to keep it interesting.
Thanks
