- vickiboyle10 contributionsPerfect day trip in TaurangaJan C took us on an amazing tour! We went through the Mount and Tauranga, and Jan explained the significance and history of each stop. We had ample time to take photos, look around and ask questions at each destination. There was a tasting of Manuka honey where she explained the difference between them, and we tasted green and gold kiwifruit. We also had a morning tea, all provided. We went for a lovely loop around McLaren Falls which was a manageable 15 minute walk. Jan also called ahead an organized hokey pokey for everyone on the bus on the way back. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tour as Jan was fun, knowledgeable, and catered to everyone's needs. The small group was also a bonus as we were able to chat with our seatmates. Well worth the cost.Written 24 February 2025
- jillyemc700 contributionsExcellent Zeelandier guided tour to Wai O Tapu GeothermalExcellent Zealandier guide and trip to Wai O Tapu Geothermal, Whakearewarewa Mauri village, Roturua and kiwi farm. Stephen our guide was brilliant, very accommodating, knowledgeable and entertaining. 😁 Booked in the UK for a cruise stop in Tauranga, NZ, would absolutely recommend an air con people carrier with another lovely couple rather than the hoards on the coaches and no issue with getting back to the ship in time at all. Thank you for a lovely day and for looking after us and showing us your beautiful countryWritten 21 February 2025
- RuthyGlasgow0 contributionsOne of our Highlights while in New ZealandThis was an amazing tour regarding the Maori culture and seeing the hot mud pools and geysers! The dancing and singing show was fabulous especially the Huka War Dance. They have craft studios where you can see the artisans working away while you watch and a great restaurant where we had a fabulous lunch included. The food was amazing. The gift shop has a great selection of souvenirs. Loved this tour.Written 19 February 2025
- R8136FRmarkp0 contributionsTe puia and rotoruaJan C was a brilliant guide, we had a very informative fun day out. We saw everything as planned and even saw a canoeist trying to do a 360degree flip.Kiwi orchard really interesting. So well organised and didn’t feel rushed. Back at port in plenty of time. Would recommend.Written 19 February 2025
- Seaside056998101200 contributionsHigh Recommended Tour in TaurangaWe thoroughly enjoyed our tour through the city & country side to McLaren Falls. Our driver Stephen was very informative and we felt we were with a very safe & careful driver. The huge muffin & coffee was most welcome, later followed by honey tasting, kiwifruit, blueberries and icecream. Highly recommend this half day tour if you don't want anything too energetic.Written 17 February 2025
- Blaine S0 contributionsDon't miss this tour!I cannot praise Zealandier Tours highly enough for the quality of their Rotorua Geothermal Wonderland and Cultural Tour. When we arrived at Whakarewarewa we were personally met by the chief of the village who was kind enough to personally guide us through his Maori village perched on top of the geothermal springs. His patient explanation of their extraordinary lifestyle and village was fascinating and was capped by the Maori villagers singing and dancing which is at the heart of their culture. It was my first experience with the waka and not to be forgotten. As if this was not enough, I forgot my backpack containing my passport when we had lunch at the Rotoruru mall. By the time I realized that I had lost my passport we were hours from the mall. Our tour guide, John, and our driver, Rolf, were kind and supportive throughout my ordeal and their calm persistence in making repeated phone calls and assisting me in contacting the police during the Holidays were rewarded when they located my backpack at the Rotoruru mall. Jan, the owner of the tour company then raced through the countryside over a hundred miles to safely deliver my backpack and passport to me before my cruise ship left port. Clearly, Zealandier Tours goes above and beyond to enure that their customers have a positive experience.Written 15 February 2025
- veglover380 contributionsA Nice informative tourIt was a nice tour. Cost was reasonable. We were cruising and they were very clear about their location. It was very easy to find them when we got off the ship. Their description was slightly different as represented. But overall a great trip with lots to see. I would recommend this tour for cruise passengers.Written 22 January 2025

We had several quick interesting historical sites stops- Jan provided us with lots of information on the Māori, education, produce, and more. Lovely stop for largest muffin ever and a drink, walk to forest through lush vegetation to a waterfall, sampled 4 local honeys, saw kiwi on the vine, Had Jokey Pokey ice cream…. I had booked this tour months before but when I arrived, I was not on the list for the 10 am tour, as they made the guests of the ship as priority who booked on the day. - 466cathrynr0 contributionsBrilliant Rotorua tour including Hell's Gate mud bathsAlthough there were only 2 of us in this small group tour, the owner/manager gave the go-ahead for this tour. As we were only there for one day on a cruise shore excursion, and since mud baths were a highlight of my whole trip, I was very grateful for this. The bonus is that we had the best driver/guide, Stephen. He explained everything along the way, giving us context and info about NZ culture. Very knowledgeable, very professional. We got a lot more than just the Hell's Gate mud baths - tours of other hot spring areas, description of life along the way to Rotorua, cultural and economic info, etc. We had a lovely afternoon tea as our lunch. The mud baths were good fun - best to wear an old bathing suit because you may never get the sulphur smell out! The timing of everything was perfect - long enough here and there, and we were returned to our ship bang on time. Highly recommend this company, this tour, and this guide.Written 17 November 2024
- debbietE6672XL0 contributionsThe Best Day in TaurangaWe had the best tour ever in our many travels around the world. This tour was by far the very BEST! Jan C from Zealandier Tours was a fabulous guide. She was always aware of everyones’ needs, and took great care of all of us. I loved that it was a small group of 16. We got so much personal attention and interaction with Jan C. Jan definitely made our day. We visited so many stunning locations. Jan C’s very descriptive story-telling certainly enhanced our tour. She was most knowledgeable about Tauranga, New Zealand Customs and the language of the Maori’s. Her eloquent speak was like melodic poetry. The extra special things that Zealandier included in our tour was far beyond our expectation besides the wonderful locations we were taken to. The Falls Cafe presented us with Cappuccino and beautiful homemade muffins that were beyond normal size. We tasted kiwi, Manuka Honey and as a special treat at the end of our tour, Hokey Pokey ice cream. And as a special gift we each received a snack pack of dried kiwi snacks. I do not think that anything could have been improved on this trip! Thank you Jan C for such a wonderful and memorable day in Tauranga. Debbie And Rick T.Written 21 October 2024

The ship tour to Rotorua was expensive so I booked the Rotorua tour with Zealander Tours, and I am glad I did. It was much cheaper and Zealander Tours guarantee they will get you back to the ship before the ship departs. I met the Zealander Tours operators at the end of the ship wharf. They were very professional, dressed in uniform with our names displayed on notice boards making it easy to find and begin our tour. We met our tour guide, Marina and the tour began on time. The minibus was modern, clean and very comfortable. Marina was very professional, funny, passionate and very knowledgeable. Our first stop was Te Puia an amazing experience. We saw wood & stone carving and dress making. We also saw the Kiwi bird (no photos permitted), the bubbling thermal mud pits, the geyser eruptions. We then went into a large house and watched many local dance performances and the amazing Haka (I have seen the Haka on TV, but you must experiencing it close up, you can feel the energy and the fear they deliver) we then went to the trout farms and white water rafting river, the geothermal hot pool and soaked our feet, (towels provided) a Kiwi fruit plantation and much more. This is must do, 5 star tour, you certainly get value for money. Thank you Marina and Zeelander Tours for an amazing tour experience, a highlight of our New Zealand cruise.

Small excursion bus with driver guide Steven. 1.5 hour ride to Rotorua with brief stop at the Redwood Forest to use restrooms and look at big trees. We also stopped at a Kiwi farm for a brief look at how the Kiwi vines grow. Steven did a great commentary along the whole route. When we arrived at Rotorua, we were dropped at a big shopping mall food court so everyone could choose their own lunch and get done quickly in 40 minutes. After lunch we went to the living village for a demonstration of how a small number of Maori families live in the traditional ways among the thermal features, using them for cooking and heating. This tour ended with a traditional dance show that was very entertaining. On the bus ride back to Tauranga, we stopped at a waterfall that now flows on the remains of a decomissioned power plant. We saw as much as you could see in the time allotted.

Excellent driver/guide. Nearly non-stop information along with great tour stops.
Especially loved the Maiori village stop with sweet corn 🌽 geysers and dancers, but i wouldn't have missed any of this! Dream come true!
Was on cruise and their tours were too pricey and not as inclusive. So glad I chose this. There were several buses from this tour company when two cruise ships were in port and they were so well organized. Very considerate about making sure we were back on plenty of time to depart.
Thanks Rolf for a great day! 🤗

The tour didn’t follow the defined itinerary with very limited stops aside from the main attraction in Rotorua (there was no waterfall, we didn’t stop at the gardens or the mountain, only drove past). Added a stop at a kiwi farm, but we just stopped at the side of the road and looked at the plants. The tour guide didn’t seem particularly interested in being there, and wasn’t helpful while on the tour (apparently we had a booking for lunch but he made no effort to actually find the table or communicate to the group). Rotorua was very cool but that part of the tour was run by the local village.
Top tip - just spend the day in Tauranga, the port is absolutely beautiful, with stunning beaches and a mountain you can walk around or climb.

Hi Kirsty, I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy your day out to Rotorua this week.
Yes, you are correct to say that the major objective of the tour is to visit a geothemal region and experience Maori culture intertwined with important Maori history and a cultural performance. Unfortunately to do this you have to travel to Rotorua (another city - 1.5hrs drive time away from your ship) . To try and make the journey a bit more interesting we make a few stops enroute both their and back. These stops also provides 'comfort" stops for those who may require it.
Kiwifruit is an important product in this area as we are the 2nd largest supplier to the entire world and it all comes from this region - we are not allowed to take you underneath kiwifruit vines due to the biosecurity risk and vine health - so yes we have to view these from outside the fence line - otherwise everybody would instinctively want to touch the fruit and damage it therefore make in no good for export.
I am not sure why the guide did not stop at the Gardens - did he give you any reason on the day?
The waterfall is at the river where the rapids and trout Pool are - maybe you did not walk down the 2nd track & boardwalk to see it (there are 2 walking tracks in this area to view different parts of the river and our native forest) - there were lots of people there on this date - lots of other tour drivers and passengers from your ship and as it was NZ holiday time it was really busy, kayakers even came over the waterfall on this particular day and children were swinging out and landing in the river below the waterfall so I am surprised that you did not see the waterfall.
I am pleased to read you enjoyed the Living Maori Village which is the main purpose of the tour - not the add on stops. Yes we reserved a table in the cafe at the village for you all to sit and enjoy some lunch - but my guide said that you all chose not to sit down as you all wanted to look into the gift shop .
You have not mentioned whether you enjoyed going to the Redwood forest and or the kiwifruit & honey tasting you experienced. Maybe you forgot about this part or the dehydrated kiwifruit we gift you to take home.
I agree with you the Tauranga - or Mount Maunganui seaside resort where your ship is docked is very beautiful, there is lovely walk around the mountain, a beautiful harbour and or ocen beach and there are lots of shops for shopping without heading off to experience geothermal activity or Maori culture - but unfortunately if you want to experience the uniquness of these two things you have to travel to the Rotorua region - the only place in NZ where you see and get up close to geothermal activty and one of the 7 countries in the world where you can experience this , unlike nice beaches and shopping.
Most people who come on this tour enjoy what they experience and I am sorry that you did not enjoy your day.

We were very disappointed with this tour. Our first stop was at a kiwi farm where we took a couple pictures. We never saw any waterfall as the description states you will. Okere Falls, was the next stop. The redwood forest was absolutely stunning, however there was no time for a "short stroll". We were there long enough to use the restroom and back in the car we went. Again, there were no waterfalls seen on this trip as it states multiple times that you would. We did not stop for lunch "beside Lake Rotorua". We were actually dropped off at some food court in the middle of a not so great area. There were homeless people everywhere. In fact we witnessed some stealing shoes while we were there. This was not a tourist site. I would never have stopped there nor let any one from out of town stop there either. This was a very poor decision. We then went to the Maori village, which was cool, but the group was so big that you could not hear the guide what so ever. Then making our way back to the town/ship, the driver decided he would take us along the coast to take pictures at the beach. As he was making his right hand turn, we were nearly T-boned. After taking pictures for 2 minutes at the beach, as we were backing out of the parking stall, the driver nearly backed into another vehicle. Over all this was not a good tour. We could not wait to get back and out of the car. The 90 minutes in the Maori village was the longest we were out of the car the entire day. The tour was supposed to be 7.5 hour, which turned out to be only 6 hours (thank god). I would highly suggest visiting the redwood forest, but do not do it with the tour. You will not have time to enjoy it. I wouldn't suggest doing this tour period. This was not a "worry free excursion" again as the description states. I reached out to the owner for a refund which she refused to do.

Hi Ashley,
As I have already spoken with you in regards to your complaint - I am going to post the exact same reply I have already given you.
I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy your day yesterday. I have spoken with your guide and he has told me he went to every place and stop on our itinerary other than cafe at lake area and Okere Trout pool and falls. Reason being cafe takes too long to take orders and do coffees for 11 people and you were short on time yesterday due to your sbip leaving at 5.30 which means we have to plan to have you back by 4.30. The foodcourt in The Mall is quickest option to feed a group of 11 at same time, as there are multiple food outlets and choices of food styles., including multiple bathrooms. The food is always very fresh as turnover is high. In regards to homeless people being there, unfortunately a sign of the times, like all countries in the world, NZ is no exception to homelessness, however The Mall is one of the safest places to be in Rotorua as they have security staff on site.
Okere Trout pool and falls and rapids, Willem opted to not stop here on your return journey to your ship because he didnt have enough time to comfortably let you all out there to wander and ensure you didnt run into traffic congestion on return drive to ship. This area is still 1 hr drive from your ship, we need min of 25 mins at Trout pool and falls area. When your guide got closer to your ship he still had 15 mins so he took you to the beach, NZ's most popular beach with its 22 kms of white sandy beach and surf. Our major concern on every tour is to not take risks that you miss your ship, so the guide has the right to amend an itinerary to ensure your guarantee to return to ship on time. In regards to vehicle, traffic incident you referred to, Willem was not aware that at any time you nearly got "T boned" as you have quoted. and I am sure he would have remembered this incident if it happened. I note you are from US so our road rules are definitely different here in NZ, and I am sure Willem would have known if any driver did anything crazy and you had a near miss. In NZ we dont give refunds unless we fail to comply with our Consumner Guarantee laws around Services, and it looks like we met all of the criteria so there is no refund due. The major component of your tour was to visit Maori Village and get up close to Geothermal activity which is where you spent most of your time. All the other stops are extras we add on for interest. Travel time from port of Tauranga to Rotorua city to see the geothermal is minimum of 1hour and 20 mins, each way, if we encounter road works we easily need to add on another 15 to 20 mins, which we have to make allowances for. Willem was very surprised to hear that you had not enjoyed the day as you had not expressed any if this to him throughout your day.

Overall, this tour was just OK and really could be shortened.
The highlight was the visit to Whakarewarewa, the living Māori Village. Our guide there is Māori and gave a great overview of the way of life in the village. We also had a Māori cultural performance that was amazing!
The second best stop was the Whakarewarewa Forest. It's beautiful! Towering Redwood trees and some lovely, peacful trails to explore. Unfortunately, we only had 20 minutes here so didn't have much time to actually enjoy it. This whole tour really could be just these two things.
We had a stop at a kiwifruit farm, which was interesting but FAR too long. We liked seeing how they are grown, but I suppose a tasting was promised, so our guide set out a table, took some kiwifruit out of a cooler from the van, proceeded to peel and cut it, and then place it on a tray with toothpicks. It took a really long time, while we stood around in the heat and frankly, I'm pretty sure we've all had kiwifruit before so it wasn't really necessary.
The description of the tour mentions there will be a stop for lunch at your own expense, which is fine. We excepted to be in a cute little town and enjoy a small cafe or something. Nope. We were dropped off at a MALL for 30 minutes. Are you kidding me? I did not fly halfway around the world and pay the money for this tour to go to a MALL! My husband and I used the time instead to walk around the town we were in, but the area around the mall wasn't very interesting. This was just another huge waste of time. If they cut the tour to the first couple of stops, you probably wouldn't even need to build in a lunch time.
I don't think I can fully recommend this tour, unless it's the only way you have of getting to the forest and the Māori Village.

I am sorry you only enjoyed the main attraction of the tour, which is the sole purpose of the tour - and I can appreciate that your lunch stop was a huge disapointment . NZ does not have many cafes which can accommodate a bus full of cruise passengers turning up ontop of their regular clientelle at midday, no cafe can make a cup of barista coffee in under 2 mins per cup - not to mention time for somebody to take your orders, prepare your food and then time to eat it. Just do the maths of 22 - 46 passengers and you will appreciate why we take groups to the foodcourt. There are lots of food styles and outlets, the food is always fresh due to high turnover, it is cost effective and there are multiple bathrooms for use - so no queuing. The foodcourt is in the shopping Mall and Rotorua is a city which is 1 .25 hour drive away from port of Tauranga - not just a little town close by and yes the only way to get to visit the Living Maori village and see geothermal activity upclose, and visit the redwoods and the kiwifruit orchard is by joining a tour. We know you enjoy lots of fantastic food on your cruise ship so we try not to waste too much time ashore eating - instead we like to showcase as much as is possible with the short amount of time we have, given that travel takes up near on 3 hours of your day - when visiting Rotorua.
Maybe you should have booked yourselves a private tour which I think would have suited you better, rather than a shared group tour.

We were so looking forward to this tour.
Sadly, within the first half hour after a joke was made about women and shopping I knew this was going to be less about the commentary and hopefully the scenic side would make up for it.
Unfortunately with a couple of 5 minute stops not long enough to explore the surroundings, my disappointment was lingering.
The last straw of the morning after paying over $400 for a “quality tour” we were dropped at the mall to buy our lunch in the food court! wtf?
Finally we arrived at the Maori village and a real guide gave us some interesting information, history and a nice tour.
Following from this, the return consisted of more boring commentary about the colour of cows, supermarkets and enthralling details on walkways to islands and real estate.
So glad I paid good hard earned money to experience the real NZ - said no-one.

Hi Lizz
I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy your tour on this day. I am extremely surprised to hear that Stephen (tour guide) & John (coach driver) did not produce a great narrration throughout the day - they frequesnty share differing parts of the commentary so passengers dont get bored with the same voice as there is a lot to talk about all the way to Rotorua. We have lot of points of interest to share and cover off as we travel that 1.5hrs from the port.
We do have a few short stops enroute to provide opportunity to use a bathroom without having to ask and also to stretch your legs and have a break. Some of those stops include a Kiwifruit orchard, the Redwood forest , Kaitinu river - papids , waterfall and trout pool whihc includes glimpse into our native forest and a common sport (kayaking & white water rafting). The main point of the tour is to visit a geothermal valley where you can get up close to see geothermal activity. There is only 7 countries in the world where you can see / do this - so Rotorua is quite unique. What makes this place so special is that 20 Maori families still live in a village ontop of the geothermal valley and use it to aid their daily living needs and they invite us into the vilalge and tell you their stories whilst guiding you araound. They then put on a concert whihc includes the famous Haka - war dance.
In regards to cost - this tour is $200 NZD per person so for 2 people it is $400 NZD so assume there were 2 of you travelling together on this tour. $400 NZD = approx 222USD / 111 USD per person. So if you compare this to a ship sold shore excursion - I think you would say it is very good value for money.
Just a note about eating at the Foodcourt in the Shopping Mall - you were in a coach of 40+ people - there is nowhere in NZ where we can turn up to a cafe / restaurant with 40+ people and expect to have lunch ordered, cooked and served within 45mins. It takesa min of 2 mins to make 1 cup of coffee - that alone multiplied out comes to 80 mins - this does not allow for order taking / making payment or cooking some food. So the Foodcourt offers fast service, multiple types of food & flavours to suit all nationalities, serves very fresh food due to high turnover ,is cost effective and has a large amount of bathroom cubicles unlike most other places - so again no queuing.
Maybe you can suggest a better option of how we should manage this.
New Zealand is very small in population and we do not have food places who serve buffet style meals in middle of day - like you get onboard your cruise ship.
On appositve note I am please to read you enjoyed the village and the people there. I am really sorry you did not like Stephen & Johns commentary.

Went on this tour and was disappointed. We made a short stop on the street with with kiwi trees, but did not get out of the bus.
We then went to a redwood forest, and the guy sat at a picnic table, cutting up, seaweed and serving samples along with kiwi juice. This lasted for 45 minutes. Then when we got back on the bus, the driver yelled at people about getting back in a timely manner, but the guy never gave the group a time to get back on the bus so several people lingered in the gift shop.
We were then dumped at a mall and told we had a half an hour to get lunch because we have been so delayed. A mall is about the last place. I wanted to go in and find my lunch. It was absolutely packed and it was a zoo. The only part of the excursion that we really thought was worthwhile was the trip to the Maori village. The geothermal pools and geysers were amazing. We walk through the village with a wonderful Maori guide, and then they did a show for us, which was really interesting. We could've skipped everything else on this tour.

We lucked out getting Steven as our guide for this tour. He was calm , pleasant , and even had surprises for us. We stopped at a kiwi orchard, and after explaining the basics of kiwi crops, he gave us packets of dried kiwi. Along the way we also sampled fresh kiwi and manuka honey. Steven shared history and all kinds of information as well as answered our questions. A stop at a geothermal village for lunch, a tour, and a performance added to this memorable tour. What a great day!

This was such a wonderful experience. Jan c. Was our tour guide. She was knowledgeable, funny and entertaining all day. She made all of us in a group of 19 feel well liked and valued. She went everywhere with us even into the whaka village and would ensure we would get the best photo spots and viewing locations. Sharing funny antidotes along the way.
I would highly recommend this company and tour. Thanks again for a memorable experience.

Our ship doesn’t get into port until 9:30 on March 5. Can your tour accommodate us?

This question was directed to me by trip advisor. I think you need to reach out to the excursion company directly through TripAdvisor. We had concerns when we did this excursion also. When I reached out to the tour company they are very accommodating. They also have a tent set up as you leave the ship and walk toward town. A short walk where you meet the guide under the flag pole right as you leave the docks. Highly recommend this tour. It was great!
