Beautiful experience
Staff was so friendly. The captain stayed for a while in front of the carving so we could take a lot of pictures. The lady on board was lovely! She knew a lot and gave us some tips about where to go, what to do. Wifi on board, and free tea and coffee. 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Relaxing ride to see the carving
Jun 2021
Was just a ride out to see the carvings. If you have never been, do it. This is my 4th or 5th time and the water level this low is a first. Other times were on different boats & kayaks over the last 20 years.

Thank you for joining us, it is really neat that you've chosen to venture out on the Lake to the spectacular artworks so many times. You're in a great position as a passenger to have done this activity via so many different companies, I'm sure each one has provided you with a wonderful insight into our area and the stories it holds. The Lake level is very low at the moment, we do our best to make sure it wont interfere in your experiences :) Cheers!

Amazing day out with superb service and tasty food
I was with a group of 18 and spent an afternoon aboard the Regal Flyer cruising. The Regal Flyer is in the same company as the Ernest Kemp. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Beautiful food, good service and commentary and such a comfortable vessel for a large group. You will not be disappointed. Thanks Adi and your delightful crew.

Great service, te reo Māori pronunciation needs work
Jun 2021
We brought our two kids under 5 on the cruise. We received excellent service. The hostess was genuinely interested in keeping the children engaged. There was colouring in and they even got to 'steer' the ship for a bit! I would highly recommend the cruise itself!

The biggest disappointment for me was about something that I can no longer just tolerate and be quiet about. The cruise is widely advertised as a 'Māori cultural experience', an area that is very dear to my heart. However my heart sank when I heard the skipper's pronunciation of te reo Māori, which was very poor.

It was only a couple of generations ago that Māori children were beaten for simply speaking their native language at school. As a result of colonisation and the loss of language, te reo Māori began to lose its mana within main stream society.

Whilst we today, are not directly responsible for the past generations' transgressions, for many Māori today, the continued butchering of their names serves as an ongoing reminder of oppression. This is not just about being PC, the on going trauma among Māori is real.

Te reo Māori is the indigenous language of Aotearoa, we need to do what is right and pronounce it correctly, thus acknowledging the whakapapa and mana behind the name.

This applies even more so to your tourism operation. How is it right that on one hand you are profiting from a 'Māori cultural experience', yet on the other you are trampling on the mana of Māori by mispronouncing names?

As a tourism operation you are in a position of real influence on what standards we are prepared to accept as a society today. 'Taupō' is probably the most mispronounced te reo Māori name in Aotearoa. You have a great opportunity here to make a stand and no longer accept mediocracy and become a leader in this area.

What standards are you prepared to accept?

Hi There, I have read your review and have spent some time absorbing and reflecting upon the opinion you have provided, with the intention of having a solution before I publish a response. Our small team strives for excellence; we rely on passenger feedback to help guide us on where improvements can be made. I offer our sincerest apologies. We did not intend for you to be concerned by one of our skipper’s pronunciation of Maori Names; however it is apparent you have a right to be so. The proper pronunciation of Maori names and words of significance is an area we are acutely aware needs to be given a great deal of respect and a sustained effort by all, especially our front line team members. We are not naïve to the importance of how this reflects on our small business, and on New Zealand Tourism as a whole. I am saddened why something so dear to your heart that which you can no longer tolerate, you haven’t chosen to contact anyone from our operation directly before posting this review, or at least having a friendly conversation with our onboard skipper and crew? We are an approachable team, and while we spend our cruises sharing knowledge and insight to our wonderful passengers, so to can we learn something from them. I know if you had spoken to our team, you would have found our skipper is very much aware his pronunciation needs genuine improvement; he is also actively working on this. As the most recent member of our team, having long lived abroad, his immersion in the language is not on par with our other skippers; their pronunciation I’m sure you would commend. In no way are we making excuses for the experience you have had. We hear you and acknowledge this is an issue that needs eradication. We also believe as long as someone is working towards improvement, even if it does take time, they should not be knocked for their progress. Rest assured there is no malicious nature behind the mispronunciation.

Warm, Friendly, Fun
Was a cold grey day so we decided be a great day for a boat ride on a lake we have driven past for years.
Rang to check availability and if pet friendly as advertised, and it was.
The lovely lady who took our booking was very pleasent, they welcomed our little dog and reserved a table for us.
On board crew were fantastic, friendly and very welcoming to us and our pet. Thanks Renee for delivering to us hot tea and coffee with a free biscuit.
Trip around the lake was informative and fun, even with it being wet and cool.
Recommend to all as a great way to spend two hours on lake Taupō with an excellent tour company!

Great trip
Really enjoyed this short cruise. They provided tea and coffee on our way out and provided an activity for the children. Staff were friendly and informative. The carving was amazing and then on the way back we all got a cookie. Great trip!

Well worth it
We have visited Taupo many times, but have not done 'touristy ' things like visiting the Maori Carvings. It was a gray, damp day, but still on the lake, and it was a great trip to do in these conditions. The lake was quite empty of other boats, and the Ernest Kemp chugged along smoothly and comfortably. The area of the lake where the carvings are, is beautiful. We enjoyed the trip as much as the spectacular destination. The carvings were well explained, and were admired by us all.

Highly recommend
A friend had recommended that we go on a boat trip to look at the Maori carvings. As a result we headed down to the lakefront and the time of the cruise suited us. Smallish boat but certainly not cramped. Tea and coffee complimentary and the skipper gave a commentary on local information and got the boat as close as he could to ensure that we had a good view of the carvings.

Awesome Time, Great staff
For a job that must be very repetitive, it's incredible how genuienly helpful and lovely the staff were.
From the lovely lady Catherine at the front desk, to the boat hand Renee and skipper Matt I think?
Very top class service and highly recommend.
We all had a very good time, and don't forget to ask to go for a swim!
