Adi and her team hosted our family for a private charter to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday.

I give my highest recommendations of the charming Ernest Kemp boat, staff and experience.

This was such a nice way to celebrate a special occasion. Our group was kept to around 30, in order to seat everybody inside comfortably if necessary if the weather was not favourable. And that number was just lovely.

The usual wines, soft drinks and pizzas (and some extra sweet slices!) were provided and very much enjoyed by all. Gluten free pizzas were also offered.

We were able to play out own music over the sound system, but still had some commentary about the Lake provided by the Captain as well. We were also able to use the mic to give speeches.

I wanted to have some special items placed on the boat before everybody arrived (a cake, some flowers and a photo) and the staff were so helpful with this, letting me deliver them earlier in the day and then setting them up so nicely on the boat.

They also provided some extra balloons which were an unexpected touch.

We had some guests who hadn't seen the Maori carvings, so the team made a particular effort to get us around to see them, even though it meant we were going through a bit of choppy water. We all got a bit of rocking and rolling and it was great fun.

I considered the price to be very affordable for a group of this size.

I simply cannot recommend the Ernest Kemp enough.

Thank you very much Ang, we loved being a part of such a special occasion. Your cake was incredible - we have many photos of this - and the painting given to your Husband was so beautiful, it is obvious a lot of thought and care has gone into ensuring your family and friends had a great experience. We strive to give our very best efforts for all of our wonderful guests, it is made that much easier for us when we have upbeat and engaging groups onboard such as yourselves. I particularily love the extremes your family and friends went to to ensure they could be present for this occasion, driving from Dunedin is no small feat! Come back and cruise with us again anytime Ang and family, we look forward to having you onboard. Kind regards, The team at Ernest Kemp :)

Our first time out on the lake was not a disappointment, the weather was spectacular the boat nice and clean, well looked after, the crew were very friendly the skipper very knowledgeable about the area and the deck hand was a lovely lady, we were sitting at the front of the boat and she came up to see if we needed anything, blanket, tea/coffee and even took our picture at the carving. It’s about 2hrs round trip and we’ll worth it. Would recommend.

I had no idea these carvings even existed until a few weeks ago and was very keen to see them during a short stay in Taupo. I wasn't keen on booking too far in advance not knowing the weather (being NZ), so it helped the day I wanted was very off peak, middle of winter, a weekday and not the school holidays and was able to book the day before. Something I doubt could've happened pre-domestic market only.

Tip: the 10:30am cruise on a perfect winter's day is absolutely freezing- it was about 3C when we left. So hat scarf and gloves as well as layers and sitting outside in the open at the back was still pleasant, but not up front! And the complimentary hot drinks really help :)

Our guide Mark was lovely, and between him and the Captain there was a lot of interesting information about the area covered. The carvings were great to see- it does seem like a long way to go for maybe 10 mins of looking at a cliff and taking some photos, but it's a really big lake and the only way to see the carvings, and it's something unique. It was a very enjoyable 2 hours.

Thank you very much Kay, we are grateful you've written such a detailed and insightful review. You are quite right, there are many benefits to cruising at this time of the year - off-peak season, last minute bookings and stunning winter landscapes being great examples of this. So long as you've packed an extra warmer layer, you are good to go! Come back and join us in the summer Kay, where we offer nibbles and a complimentary drink in the evenings. You might even decide to jump in for a quick refreshing swim while you are out there! Thank you very much for cruising with us, we are pleased to have had you onboard :)

This is a novel way to see the carvings and is comfortable without bring boring. I was worried youd lose something not going in a kayak but thoroughly enjoyed. Steward was very attentive and the captains commentary was informative but not constant. Sir in the right hand side as you face the wheel house if you can, and sit indoors if you dont have a warm layer with you, but we went mid Nov and were warm enough inside in 1 layer, it helps the steward managed the doors to ensure it's not too blowy indoors. If you're in a group of 3 or more, make sure you get there early to ensure ur sat together, couples not such an issue. Call ahead before you book to ensure the cruise is running at that time, sometimes they dont rub if not enough interest to run it. For example we ended up going at 2pm not 12:30pm but no big deal tbh aa this is post COVID so fewer tourists around so can be expected.

There were six of us booked on the cocktail cruise which is a 2 hour cruise on the Lake. When we turned up we were taken to a table on the boat the hostess (Renee) had reserved for us as it was a full cruise and she wanted to make sure we had a table together. So thoughtful. What a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours sailing on Lake Taupo to see the Maori carvings. We were given a complimentary glass of wine/beer each and were able to buy more. The skipper was great too. We could not have wished for a better crew and want to say Renee is one of the most amazing hostesses we have ever come across. What an asset she us to the Ernest Kemp. Well worth a go

Welcomed on board the boat and settled at stern for the duration of the trip (might have been a bad choice as the day was very hot and sunburn was the order of the day!). Nice flat calm trip with some information through the loudspeaker from time to time about places of interest. Arrived at the rock carvings and they are great! How they were done, and the time taken, is amazing. The skipper maneuvered the boat beautifully to give us the maximum views. Then a trip back to harbour with more information on the way. Overall definitely worth a trip and we'd highly recommend it

WE really enjoyed this outing . We had a lovely day and left just after 2pm and did a nice tour across the lake with the commentary from the staff pointing out different places of interest and history which was really interesting. When we arrived at the maori carvings offered were made if we wanted our photo taken with the carvings behind us which was niceThis was a lovely trip with very nice staff and will be a trip I will remember as it was so pleasant.

Today we were on the cruise to the carvings when we witnessed the captain yelling/screaming at 3 young children who were swimming innocently towards the carvings from another boat. He yelled at them to get out of the way even though the lake is public and free of use to the wider community. The children’s father who was on their boat that was not far way from where they were swimming looked very disturbed and distressed by the actions and responses shown by the caption. Overall a very poor form shown by the management staff on the boat and I would not recommend nor take this cruise again. It is a real shame that people can not share the beautiful lake!!

A friend had recommended that we go on a boat trip to look at the Maori carvings. As a result we headed down to the lakefront and the time of the cruise suited us. Smallish boat but certainly not cramped. Tea and coffee complimentary and the skipper gave a commentary on local information and got the boat as close as he could to ensure that we had a good view of the carvings.
