      A little slice of heaven
What a gorgeous trip. Doug and team were so helpful - we felt incredibly relaxed and loved the scenery, the stories and the snack at the flat rocks. Thank you

Great day out on Lake Taupo
We had a beautiful day out on Lake Taupo. Our guide was great - super easy to chat with and very knowledgeable. Kayaking was at a nice pace - these guys know what they’re doing and we knew we were in good hands the whole time. We really enjoyed the day out.

Great half day on the lake
Doug made this a very good trip. He entertained us the whole time with a whole range of stories from his many experiences in New Zealand. The trip was the perfect length and we had good weather, so it was not difficult at all. Kayaking is certainly the best way to see these rock carvings.

      Lovely company- great fun
Really great time kayaking to see the lake. I was a little worried because I was 5 months pregnant but the lady assured me it would be ok and the guide ensured I was ok. More fun than going on a boat. A lovely guide and all round fun experience with a nice stop off for drinks and biscuits half way!

Loved it- even in the rain
Doug was a great guide and despite the rain we all really loved being on the river with him. This is a very easy kayak- ideal for beginners. THe river pretty much carries you down without any strenuous paddling!

More than just kayaking.. in many good ways
Everything about the tour was insane, the location was stunning with beautiful conditions and clear water, the snacks and coffee were great as well as the ability to swim at the pebble beach we landed at near the Tiki Carving. The guide's English was a bit of a barrier, and he was quite introverted, only explaining the history and meaning of the Carving to those who asked and in individual conversations rather than as a leader and teacher for the group. We got some great photos and some mediocre ones, but other wise he was sweet enough, and very relaxed, not putting pressure on us to get moving, and the rest of the tour was great.

      Great 'must do' outdoor adventure.
I highly recommend this kayaking trip, it was fabulous. The river itself is majestic, felt so good to be immersed in nature. Our guide was extremely helpful/skilled, and I appreciated the instruction at the beginning of the trip as I didn't feel overly confident. I also enjoyed hearing about his kayaking adventures, very inspiring. I will do the Māori Rock carving kayak trip next time I am back in Taupō.

      Five Star Kayak Experience!
We went on a guided kayak tour of Lake Taupo with our guide Doug. He was extremely knowledgeable of the history of the lake because he grew up there. He told us a lot of very interesting stories about the land around the lake, the people, the culture, facts about the lake itself, volcanic events, etc. He also had an awesome sense of humor and personality!! He was outgoing, friendly, personable, funny, and just the PERFECT guide!! You could see his passion for the lake, and New Zealand!! He was SO helpful to the people who were less experienced kayakers and made everyone feel safe. We stopped halfway through the tour and he provided us with drinks and snacks. I highly recommend this experience, and specifically, Doug!! We had a wonderful time and we will treasure the memories from this experience forever!!

      Amazing morning on the lake!
Even on a cloudy, light showers day, the lake is beautiful. Sasha was an amazing tour guide giving us stories about the lake, Māori legends, and the surroundings of the lake. She took some great photos at the rock carvings. Only thing I’ll note is I wish we had more time at the carvings to take photos ourselves but it’s a very popular area with other boats so you can imagine you can get crowded so you have to be quick and intentional with your photos. Sasha also brought cookies and warm drinks so we had a quick stop by the beach for snacks.

Fantastic experience hiring 2 boards for 4 hours. Customer service was outstanding and went over and above when is normal or necessary. Great tips on where to go due to current weather conditions. Would totally recommend this company.

I will start by saying that apparently there is some sort of shortage of boats (kayaks) in Taupo, as we called to reserve kayaks for 4 ppl (so either 2 for 2ppl or 4 for 1) and they said they were all booked out (all meaning about 10) and they only had paddle boards left. Now we had never done paddle boards, but on the phone we were told it is easy and we ended up booking them. First thing: they are located in the city centre, not on the water front!! A place hiring boats is located in the city centre...wtf!!! ... Luckily, we had a car, so we went there. Fist, we were surprised to see we had to carry this HUGE packs with the paddle boards ourselves, to the car, then following their map and instructions parking on the side of the road in, then hiking with this hugely heavy thing until we reached a place where we could go in the water. Then you have to inflate them yourself (the instructions are to be checked in a vimeo video for which they give you the link...so you need time and internet access). And then...you go... You do not receive a dry bag for your valuables. They tried to make us buy one from their shop for about 50NZ$...luckily we did not buy it, as we found it later in another shop for like 8NZ$. Also their instructions were rather limited and they did not seem to care much, they are rather a shop with concern of selling you stuff then a rental company that would care to offer you a nice experience.
You will fall in the water, because turns out paddle boarding is not that easy and lake Taupo is quite big and windy..and mind you, you are alone, no instructor, no safety whatsoever, apart from a life vest! You have a very limited and rather short time. They give you a time when you must be back , or they will call the coastguard and you will have to pay (apparently a lot) for them to save you if you are in difficulty.
We managed, with the minimum accidents, but it is sad to pay so much money and get nothing in return. The lack of care for their customers is scary.. Apparently there are other better companies for kayak rentals in Taupo, which we did not know about at the time. Our impression was that they just literally wanted to take make quick easy money without any concern for the client's happiness or well being.

Hi there, Firstly thank you for using our SUP hire service and then taking the time to provide the feedback. I believe that 95% of the issues you faced were due to miscommunication and inexperience with SUP boards, rather than a systematic error, but thank you for taking the time to provide the feedback because without it we cannot improve. Please let me explain: Our kayaking tours are extremely popular and during peak season, all of the spaces can fill up (81 spaces available per day). If you had booked earlier there would not have been an issue. To save disappointment, we offered you an alternative which was Stand Up Paddle Board Hire. A lot of people love SUPing and find it so easy that when they return from their hireage they purchase SUP boards. I’m sorry that you didn’t find it easy or enjoyable. You're right there are several waterfront hireage operators in Taupo, who allow you to rent a kayak or SUP and paddle in front of their stand. We are the only operator who allows you take the SUPs to the Maori Carvings (which is where you wanted to go). We are also the cheapest at $49 for 4 hours, as opposed to $20 per hour. The Carvings are over 20km out of Taupo, so driving is essential and therefore so are inflatable SUPs because solid SUP boards or kayaks would require roof racks which most campervans or rental cars do not have. That is great that you found a drybag for $8 elsewhere, I hope you bought it!  However I am positive that it would not be of the same high quality as our $29 drybags (not $50). To ensure our customers are safe, our organisation complies with Outdoors Mark Safety Audit standards. To pass this audit, external auditors have scrutinized our systems and been extremely satisfied that our safety standards surpass NZ hireage standards. My husband helped with your hireage and he apologies if you did not completely understand all of the briefing, but he did follow our safety procedure by talking you through our ‘‘briefing checklist’’ which includes how to use the equipment, safety procedures, rescue equipment, emergency contact numbers and how to be helped by Coastguard in an emergency. It is a real shame that you did not enjoy your paddle boarding experience, and I hope that if you come back to Taupo we can take you on a kayak tour to the carvings because you would absolutely LOVE it! The kayaks are stable and easy to use plus we provide a qualified guide who looks after all of the logistics, safety, refreshments and entertainment throughout your kayaking journey. This is an excellent option for beginners and I think if you had reserved a spot on a kayaking trip in the first place, then you would have really enjoyed yourself. If you would like to discuss this further then I would be happy to talk. Please email me at Laura@canoeandkayak.co.nz Kind regards, Laura Duncan Owner/Operator

*Likely to sell out: Based on Viator’s booking data and information from the provider from the past 30 days, it seems likely this experience will sell out through Viator, a Tripadvisor company.
