About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Carjusripsing0 contributionsCheck tour running before booking online as they dont update their websiteWe tried to book a number of tours using their online booking which happily took our money but the tours were not running. Our money was refunded but a lot of wasted time and thought this must be a backyard operation of which it actually is. We ended up hiring kayaks from them and doing our own paddle to the caves which is very easy where the tour guide is not required if your competent on a kayak. The lake is ok but very windy trip paddling to the carvings. Nice seeing snow capped mountain in the distance over the lake.Written 4 January 2024
- Brendan5790 contributionsWonderful … !We spent a wonderful day with Legend kayaking the Waikato and visiting the Orakei Korako thermal park. We originally booked The Squeeze but we couldn't do it post Cyclone Gabrielle and so the company offered us the Waikato/Orakei Korako tour as a substitute and it was fabulous. Full marks … and a lovely lunch … ! Thanks, guys … !Written 5 March 2023
- Casey G0 contributionsNot correctly priced.Prices on this website are wrong and they will not honour the listed prices. We we so disappointed- we came to Trip Advisor to plan our holiday and liked the look of this trip. When I went to book the prove went up 25% or so. I contacted the company and they would not honour the Trip Advisor price. So disappointed we decided to spend our op money elsewhere.Written 7 January 2023
- 49Happygirl490 contributionsLovely gentle kayakBeautiful river and enjoyable kayak! Joe was awesome guide and did an awesome job of giving us a tailored, professional experience. Some more information of where to meet sent to an email could be a bit better but it all worked out in the end!Written 6 January 2023
- KrystalBarbi30 contributionsGreat for beginnersLovely, calm trip down the Waikato. We did the Family Float and it was great for all ages, from the Grandparents to 5 year old. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Beautiful scenery. A great first kayak trip.Written 23 April 2022
- K1479XApamelas0 contributionsStunning Day Out On The LakeWe got incredibly lucky with having a beautiful sunny day out on the water, and very calm conditions. The whole experience was food for the soul, made even more magical by the carvings. They truly are a magnificent sight. Loved the opportunity to stop halfway and enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake. The best part however, was the generous and insightful conversation with our tour guide ‘Legend’ along the way. Learning about the rich history of the lake, the surrounding whenua and it’s people was remarkable. Would highly recommend !Written 30 January 2022
- namisagar0 contributionsSerene and BeautifulThis is my 1st time kayaking experience. Thanks to my instructor and to the good weather. Waikato river float will calm your mind for sure. A serene and beautiful experience. We stopped at a hot pool for about 20 minutes. At the end, the team was waiting with muffins, hot chocolate, coffee and tea.Written 3 June 2020
- kayakalison0 contributionsGreat for groups with varying fitness levels! We had hoped to kayak to the Maori rock carvings, but high winds on the lake forced us to look for other options. The Waikato River float to the Otumuheke hot springs was a lovely alternative. Not exactly strenuous if you’re looking for adventure, but absolutely stunning and we never felt unsafe. TKA took great care of us! This would be the perfect activity for a larger group of varying fitness levels!Written 18 March 2020
- SprungerJ0 contributionsAwesome time! Our guide Brett was fun and professional! Also met Lisa, the owner. Both were so friendly! Mountain biked for the first time in my life! - Yamez160 contributionsMean kayak adventure! We really enjoyed kayaking down a part of the Waikato river with our guide. The weather was great, scenery fantastic and the service excellent. Our guides Hewitt and Rob were chatty, friendly and knowledgeable, also laid back and funny. The experience was very peaceful and fun. Thanks!Written 30 January 2020
- Explore8090980 contributionsFabulous tripA fabulous few hours kayaking slowly down stream (I’m not fully mobile but I still managed) stopped off at thermal pools (these were very busy) but it was a nice break from paddling the kayak. Guild takes pictures of the tour and we really enjoyed this trip. Definitely recommend.Written 7 January 2020
- orrdin0 contributionsRundown kayaks and poor serviceMaybe the tours are a different experience but we just came to rent kayaks on our own. The kayaks we got were in poor condition and the owner had us carry them down to the lake and back up with zero help. Basically ”here’s your boats and good luck.” So if you do a tour maybe this is great but if you just want to go out on your own beware. And the lake itself was fine to kayak around for a few hours but nothing special.Written 28 December 2019
- TogetherForever10 contributionsHour kayak hireI took the kids and we hired kayaks for an hour and just paddled around the bays. Even though the weather wasn’t fabulous it was still a neat way to spend the morning. Would love to do it again on a sunny day.Written 8 October 2019

Lake Taupo is great and this is no exception. We were met by very kind and competent staff and after a short introduction we set off on our journey. Now,10 km is a bit far to paddle for a beginner. Even so, it could be far less grueling if we made more stops along the way or if we had anything more to do than to just..paddle. Carvings are impressive but we weren’t able to hear about it as it was quite windy and we were pretty dispersed.
All in all, a nice trip but not much happened so I wouldn’t do it again.

Great day out. Firstly we were really impressed with the equipment. Fully kitted out sea kayaks with spraydecks and rudders.
We were complete beginners and the guide (Juliette) was excellent with communication and also safety instruction. She made the trip really fun and enjoyable.
The tour was just the correct length. We were nicely tired at the end, but if we had been struggling we could have used the small electric motor. It was good to know we had this as backup.
Really recommend this trip. Fantastic way to spend a morning. You see Lake Taupo from completely different perspective. And Carvings give the trip a nice focal point.

Totally unprofessional behavior. Unfortunately I can’t say anything about the kayak tour we wanted to do, because their unprofessional and rude behavior made sure I couldn’t make the reservation.
Even in this day and age, they don’t offer the option of making a booking through a secured site, so I contacted Lisa to try and rent a kayak. The only way to make a reservation is to phone your credit card details (which in my case in not an option because of the time difference) or options which lead up to 10% to 62,5% of the rental fee. After several attempts to try to come to a realistic solution and try to find out if booking ahead is really necessary, she just told me to rent somewhere else. They totally miss the Kiwi spirit of customer service.

The guide was amazing! I forgot his name...i even asked twice... he made our ride very pleasant and he was very professional. Taking photos for us and providing hot beverages and muffins. Teaching us tips with how to ride on the waves etc. I would highly recommend if you are active, to do the kayak to see the maori carving rock instead of boating, it made a lasting impression and it was super fun!
Rode 20th January @1:30pm.(as i cannot remember the guides name sorry, you were amazing :D )

If you're looking for fun, adventure, and great company, then this is for you. Elgan and Rob were fantastic guides, going out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and well taken care of. Not only were they great with getting photos (so that your experience is captured), they also spun some great yarns. Despite the fact that I was the only customer on the tour, I felt relaxed and at ease.
The kayaking itself wasn't strenuous - if anything, I enjoyed the challenge (although my arms may need some time at the hot springs now!). There's ample time to get out to the carvings and back, and also time to admire the lake and its tranquility. We stopped for delicious muffins and refreshments along the way, which really added to the experience. Nothing like being able to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city.
The owners were also helpful, assisting with pick up and drop off from Taupo. That was important for me as I didn't have my own transport. Thanks, team.
Overall a fantastic experience - I look forward to seeing what else TKA has to offer the next time I return to Taupo.

We had an amazing morning on the lake going to see the Maori carvings. Brett was our guide and told us local tales and about the area, he was a great guide.
The hot chocolate and coffee with a muffin was much appreciated at the halfway point.
We thoroughly enjoyed our morning and would recommend going on be of their trips. It was Awesome!

Under the watchful eyes of Shane & Ollie, our team of 2 x pairs rowed across a very calm Lake Taupo on a beautiful summer’s day. With very little kayaking experience between us and a c.10km voyage to navigate, we were in safe hands all the way. The mid-point stopover for coffee, muffins and a dip in the lake broke things up nicely for us. And thankfully there was a back-up motor option for let’s say pair #2 to keep up with the main flotilla…Ollie was standout in getting Huey & Duey back on track. Thanks again guys - you made it a great experience!

Great morning out on Lake Taupo! We hadn’t booked, but just rocked up and knocked on the door where a lovely guy helped us to rent the kayak. Based on other reviews, we did ask about the rudder which was a little bit sticky on two of the kayaks we were offered, but worked absolutely fine once out in the water. Took about an hour 10 mins to get to the Mine Bay Rock Carvings and we were really lucky to be the only ones out there!! Water was really flat and the kayak was relatively easy to moderate

Great trip with knowledgeable guide. Had the jacket, life vests and skirt that made it much more pleasant. The 10k trip was a nice workout for us, has motor for guests that get tired. The carvings are great and Linda has unique insight from people related to the carvers. Beautiful setting on Lake Taupo.

Our guide Legend, made this trip special. He was so knowledgeable, jovial and kind. A pleasure to be with. Even without Legend though, the lake is gorgeous. Crystalline water that changes color with the passing clouds and sun rays. We thought it would be a silly touristy thing to do, but it actually expanded a place in our hearts for Taupo.

Hi
I'd love to book this trip for today or the next days as long as I'm in taupo, but I can't as there's always a warning popping up that says I'd need to book for minimum 2 persons.. Are there no other reservations for the next days than mine?
Cheers, Ann

Hi, I'd like to do this with my two kids ages 6 and 8 i.e. 1 adult and 2 kids. is this possible in 1 kayak? Thanks
Written 15 January 2019
Hi, you would need two kayaks but you could check with the company as the guide might be able to accompany one of your children in a double kayak.
