What to expect
Half Day Maori Rock Carving: Kayaking, swimming or rock jumping (optional) Explore Lake Taupo as you kayak to the Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay. You will start your half day tour from the sheltered waters of Acacia Bay before paddling out on the lake below native bush, past steep cliffs and mini inlets that can only harbor a kayak. The experienced guide will explain the carving's cultural significance to the lake and surrounding areas while you float beneath them. On the way back stop for gourmet refreshments and can take the opportunity to swim or go for a rock jumping into the clear waters of the beautiful lake. If the breeze comes up, you can raft your kayaks together and sail back – bliss! Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Departure time is at 8:30am and 1:30pm in summer and 10:00am and 1:30pm in winter from our base in Acacia Bay. Allow approx 4 hours per trip (3 hours on the water).

Amazing Guide!
Jan 2021 • Friends
The guide was amazing! I forgot his name...i even asked twice... he made our ride very pleasant and he was very professional. Taking photos for us and providing hot beverages and muffins. Teaching us tips with how to ride on the waves etc. I would highly recommend if you are active, to do the kayak to see the maori carving rock instead of boating, it made a lasting impression and it was super fun!

Rode 20th January @1:30pm.(as i cannot remember the guides name sorry, you were amazing :D )

Sheer Wanderlust!
Jan 2021
Matt was our tour guide and my partner and I and our 7yr old boy had an amazing journey on Lake Taupo with him. Proficient in using Te Reo along with his knowledge of the area, the different bays, historical recall of the various landmarks, and of course the carving of Ngatoroirangi. This trip included a tea/coffee refreshment and muffin service. Matt said it’s the first time he’s had someone fall asleep lol (our little boy).
Many thanks to you Matt and Taupo Lake Kayaking Adventures. Look forward to getting our whanau off their jolly devices and bringing them along next time.

Kayak Trip to the Rock Carvings
Called up in the morning and more than happy to find us a double kayak to take out 30mins later. A great way to spend a few hours on the beautiful lake Taupo. Will definitely back next time.

Give it a go - you won't regret it.

If you're looking for fun, adventure, and great company, then this is for you. Elgan and Rob were fantastic guides, going out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and well taken care of. Not only were they great with getting photos (so that your experience is captured), they also spun some great yarns. Despite the fact that I was the only customer on the tour, I felt relaxed and at ease.

The kayaking itself wasn't strenuous - if anything, I enjoyed the challenge (although my arms may need some time at the hot springs now!). There's ample time to get out to the carvings and back, and also time to admire the lake and its tranquility. We stopped for delicious muffins and refreshments along the way, which really added to the experience. Nothing like being able to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city.

The owners were also helpful, assisting with pick up and drop off from Taupo. That was important for me as I didn't have my own transport. Thanks, team.

Overall a fantastic experience - I look forward to seeing what else TKA has to offer the next time I return to Taupo.

Great fun and yummy afternoon tea
Mar 2020
We booked this as a last minute thing, and I'm glad we did.

In a group of 8, all with doube kayaks, we paddled to the Maori Carvings and back with a break for tea/coffee/hot-chocalate and muffins, plus a swim. Rob was our guide, and he was informative, funny and genuine. We really had a great time, and would recommend this activity to anyone...

Fact check guys - Lake Taupo is not the biggest fresh water lake in the southern hemisphere. At 616 sq km, it is dwarfed by three lakes in Africa: Lake Victoria 68,800 sq km + Lake Tanganyika 32,900 sq km + Lake Malawi 29,600 sq km. Even Lake Argyle in Australia is larger at 1,000 sq km. Just saying :)

Regardless it was a great activity to take in the natural beauty of Lake Taupo as well as the beautiful Maori carvings.

Beautiful lake plus great guide equals a fantastic experience
Teenage son and I did the half day kayaking trip to the Maori rock carvings. It was a truly wonderful experience and a highlight of our travels in NZ. The weather was perfect, the scenery great and the guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. The paddling was easy under these ideal weather conditions and I understand that it can be very different and difficult. Loved the afternoon tea on the rocks. I highly recommend this trip to anyone of at least moderate fitness.

Great way to spend a morning.
Great day out. Firstly we were really impressed with the equipment. Fully kitted out sea kayaks with spraydecks and rudders.

We were complete beginners and the guide (Juliette) was excellent with communication and also safety instruction. She made the trip really fun and enjoyable.

The tour was just the correct length. We were nicely tired at the end, but if we had been struggling we could have used the small electric motor. It was good to know we had this as backup.

Really recommend this trip. Fantastic way to spend a morning. You see Lake Taupo from completely different perspective. And Carvings give the trip a nice focal point.

Great staff but a bit longwinded
Dec 2019
Lake Taupo is great and this is no exception. We were met by very kind and competent staff and after a short introduction we set off on our journey. Now,10 km is a bit far to paddle for a beginner. Even so, it could be far less grueling if we made more stops along the way or if we had anything more to do than to just..paddle. Carvings are impressive but we weren’t able to hear about it as it was quite windy and we were pretty dispersed.
All in all, a nice trip but not much happened so I wouldn’t do it again.
