Highlights
Learn the history behind Maori carvings etched into rocks on New Zealand's largest lake
Try out basic sailing skills aboard a 48-foot (14.6-meter), double-mast ketch
Swim off the boat during summer months or admire snow-capped peaks in wintertime
Bring aboard your own picnic lunch or opt for a pizza-and-beer dinner cruise
What to expect
Choose the sailing time that’s most convenient for you, and then make your way to Taupo Marina where your ketch Fearless, a 48-ft (14.6-meter), two-mast sailing boat, is waiting for you. On board, take a seat and soak up the views, or choose to join in with rigging and hoisting the mainsail. Note: in completely still waters, a motor is used to operate the boat. Listen to commentary from the crew as you take the scenic route — past the bays of Te Kopua and Acacia — to the Māori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay (or Okuta Bay). The carvings are only accessible by water and, on this tour, you’ll get right up close to the rock face and have ample time to take in the intricacy of the large Māori figures. In the warmer months, bring your 'togs' (swimwear) and towel for swimming, or perhaps choose a cruise with music, wine and pizza (if upgrade selected) for the perfect summer evening on the water. You are also able to bring your own food and drink with you, should you wish. After about 2.5 hours, return to the marina where you tour concludes.

This should be a must do trip to get out on Lake Taupo, to sail on a yacht and to see the Maori Mine Carvings. Dave was a brilliant captain and we would highly recommend. Book today!

A perfect way to relax on the lake
Apr 2021 • Family
Dave was such a nice relaxed captain who did just the right amount of chat and information.
The boat was great, well equiped and comfortable and we felt right at home.
We had a fantastic day for the ride and my teen girls even loved it as it was so special to be out on the water that way just chilling in bean bags.
The pizza was a total hit, and my son loved the freedom of hanging in the cabin without too many rules.

Serene, peaceful day on the lake
Apr 2021
We were a group of 6, and there were another 4 adults + 2 children on board. A beautiful day on the lake with exceptional professional, friendly and fun service from Dave. We were lucky enough to be under sail for some of the time, as wind allowed - such a serene peaceful experience. Just the right amount of information and local knowledge to make the trip interesting. A great day!

Highly recommended sailing experience
Apr 2021
Superb sailing trip across part of Lake Taupo to view the rock carvings. David was a great skipper. I was pleased that the sails were up and engine off for a good part of the whole trip. Blankets provided against the wind chill and beanbags for comfort on deck - great.

We had fabulous time on the water with David at the helm. Beautiful weather, great scenery and David really knows his history. The Maori rock carvings are worth a visit and bring your togs - the water is clear and you can get up close to the carvings. We had a lovely time with the other guests on board as everyone was so relaxed. That's the difference between a launch and a sailing boat - on a sailing boat time becomes irrelevant. Blissful and would highly recommend it.

Blissful sail
Feb 2021
Such a lovely experience, a highlight in a very busy sightseeing trip. Dave was so friendly, knowledgable, and laid back which made the trip a delight. Cheap for the experience, food and drinks provided. The lake is so amazing to swim in, but the pace of the trip is lovely and unhurried so we were able to get a good swim in. Dave looked to sail whenever the wind allowed (not a very windy day) to maximise our experience. Highly recommend.

Awesome, that's exactly what we want to offer. A good time, to relax but also to explore. A true sailing experience, not rushed like we unfortunately all are so often in normal life.
