What to expect
Situated just 25 minutes north of Taupo and 45 minutes south of Rotorua nestled on the shores of Lake Ohakuri lies ‘The Hidden Valley’ of Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park. Orakei Korako translated means “The Place of Adorning”. Wander through a valley of unbelievable color, of bubbling hot springs, gushing geysers and unimaginable natural beauty preserved by its isolation from the outside world. Look down into Ruatapu Cave, one of only two geothermal Caves known to exist in the world, an experience not to be missed. 120 feet down, a thermal mirror pool is situated at the bottom. Access to Orakei Korako is by ferry, at no extra charge. Average sightseeing time is about 1 hour. Ferries do not run to a timetable, so you may visit the valley as soon as you arrive if you wish. It is open from 8am and the last boat to the thermal area leave at 4:30pm in the summer and 4pm in the winter. Free overnight Camper-van parking is available.

A small but Active Park with Geothermal Features
After a short boat ride to the actual site you walk thru the different examples of geothermal features including mud pots, geisers, and pools. 2 trails, long and short wandering thru the park are well maintained and easy to moderate to navigate. Nice views from lookouts on trails.

Self-Guided Geothermal Tour in Orakei Korako
Feb 2020
We visited this site as part of the Taupo Riverjet Ultimate Thermal Safari tour coordinated by NZ RiverJet. It takes about an hour to walk the site. It can be quite tiring to walk as you are going up and down stairs. It was very interesting to view the various sites.

What a great place!

I found this park accidentally and we decided to go there instead of another place. I didn't regret a minute. It takes a few minute boat ride to cross the lake. The trail is well maintained, going slightly up and down. The colors! Oh, those colors. The cave is magnificent. Couple of the spots just to seat and enjoy the view.

A favourite of ours

We have been to Orakei Korako several times and always return whenever we are in the Rotorua-Taupo area.
It is about a 50 minute drive from Rotorua, or about 30 minutes from Taupo. A bit out of the way, tucked away quite a distance from the main road. This makes it a bit special. You access the actual thermal area by boat from the visitor entrance, where there is a small souvenir shop. It is just a few minutes across the lake. The boat runs on demand.
We spent about 90 minutes walking through the thermal area. There is a well marked route, which is a loop so you are covering different territory on the way back. The far end is more of a nature walk, with less geothermal activity, but quite an impressive cave and some mud pools. The part nearest where the boat drops you is quite impressive with colours and a variety of geothermal activity.
We like this geothermal area and would return.

Thermal natural wonders at our feet
Nov 2019
A short ferry ride brought us over to the thermal reserve. We had a guided 2 hour walk to geysers, mud pools and hot water streams. We were walking, for the most part, on boardwalk. There were some ups and downs. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Our guide showed us how quick it was to boil an egg in these waters.Fascinating geology. Well worth visiting.

Thanks for your lovely review Manny, we are glad to hear you enjoyed it so much! Yes, the geology of Orakei Korako is fascinating including of course the geothermal cave, one of only two worldwide. Bridget Smith has wriiten an invaluable guide to Orakei Korako with even more information, pictures and process diagrams and will answer just about every question that arises as you wander around Orakei Korako which can be purchased at the visitor centre. Enjoy the rest of your visit to NZ and a safe journey back to the US.

Thanks for your lovely review! We strive to maintain the park in as natural a state as possible and the boardwalks were designed to minimise the visual impact on the site. Yes, it's pretty easy to get to from either Rotorua or Tauranga, especially if you are travelling between the two. Enjoy the rest of your NZ trip and a safe journey back to the UK.

Stunning
Wow wow wow.
A short boat ride took us across to the thermal springs, mud pools and cave; it was absolutely fascinating. There are wood walkways and lots of steps so not really suitable for pushchairs, very young children or people who are not steady on their feet. The cafe is lovely and the staff are outstanding.

Thanks for your lovely review! Yes, the park isn't suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs because of all the steps that go up beside the silica terraces. However, we do have baby backpacks for two year olds and under which are freely available to use, just ask at the information centre. Enjoy the rest of your trip and a safe journey back to the UK!
