Interesting, but we wouldn't recommend to friends
An interesting walk looking at various facets of geothermal activity. However, I thought it was a little overpriced for what we saw. Lady at check-in saw us waiting to get tickets but took her time in serving us as if we were an interruption to her day.

      Interesting visit
The village experience was enlightening and guide very pleasant and the geothermal walk interesting however better signposting re direction was needed. We all felt for value for entry a little more attention to be given to upgrade the experience

      A must see
A must go to for anyone visiting NZ, I always bring anyone visiting me here. A true cultural heritage experience and the villagers are so friendly and proud to share their knowledge.

The tour of the village is great, the self guided trails slightly lacking substance.
The guided tour was great, tour groups aren’t too large. The guide is relaxed and friendly. The experience of eating food cooked in the pool is fantastic. The only note to make the experience better would be for the self guided trails. There is minimal information provided about the history of the pools and Navigation is a little challenging. Besides that, the tour is definitely worth your time.

Wonderful exposure to the history, geology and culture of the area
Great experience for all the family from 5-75 years. Lots of information on Maori way of life and the thermal activity of the area. Topped off by the best tasting sweet corn.

      Good experience.
It was a good experience. Our guide gave us some history and explanations of some Māori customs. We were treated to a convivial family show of dancing along with the inevitable haka. There's a good opportunity to see lots of hot pools, mud pools etc. And for those who dare, the hāngī meal was very good.

The living Maori village at Whakarewarewa was an unforgettable experience.
The combination of geothermal activity and cultural history created such a unique atmosphere. Watching the geysers erupt and hearing about how the land is used by the local people was both educational and inspiring. Kerosene Creek was a hidden gem—the warm water was so soothing after walking around all day. A truly enriching and relaxing day!

      Immersive Maori Village Experience!
This is a working thermal Maori Village with 70 residents. It’s fascinating! They cooked corn on the cob in a geyser for us to eat and we learned so much about the Maori history and culture. If we had more time, we would have done the tour that included a traditional Hangi dinner in the evening. Our fascinating guide, Daniel, shared his stories, culture, and history with us in a compelling and interesting way. Highly recommend!

      Badly planned tourist trap
A really good example of bad planning and over pricing! The natural mud and hot pools are great to see, but the city has been built far too close up to it. From every point you see houses and even a very ugly multi-story hotel. Entrance fees are ridiculous for such a gift of mother nature. If you want to see the geysers and the mud pools and hot pools, it will cost you 72 NZD. That for a short trail around gifts of mother nature. The track is not even that well maintained. Numbers on the map do not match the numbers on of the sights of the track. The entrance building where you have to buy the tickets is far over the top on luxury, while the toilets are dirty and falling apart. This is a shameful tourist trap. New Zealand, you can do better and should do!

Learn about and Support Maori Culture
This is a very special experience. Guiding is a centuries old tradition passed down through generations in this Iwi. Kylie was a thoughtful and hospitable guide, who truly gave us a warm welcome into her home. You will learn how the community thrives in the geothermal conditions of the land around them, making use of the land and water to cook, bathe, and heal. The cultural performance was so amazing, I was overwhelmed with how lucky I was to experience it. I cannot reccomend this experience enough as a proper way to learn about and support Maori culture.

      Amazing place, Amazing people
Worth the drive. Lovely, welcoming Maori people who have been giving tours to their village for over 100 years! Saw the geyser go off, learned a lot about Maori culture. Short hike to see more hot springs. Guide cooked corn on the cob in a spring for us to taste- yum! Nice gift shop with locally designed products. Excellent performance of traditional song/dance/haka. Can't recommend this enough! GO!

      Wonderful tour
This is a wonderful place to see life of the natives and the geothermal landscape. It is worth spending half a day there. The staff in the admission office were really friendly and helpful. They volunteered to solve our booking problem and even rearranging our transportation.

Excellent and informative guide for the tour. The geothermal walk is well worth the time. Finished with the cultural performance which was as good as the treaty ground

      Amazing place, Amazing people
This is a very special place. First of all, this village has been doing their own tourism for over 120 years. Yet it's still a place where people really live. The guides are lovely, it's a landscape like nothing you've ever experienced before. Words fail to describe it properly, so just go.

We had a really lovely time at Whakarewarewa. Our guide Michael was wonderful—well spoken and well informed. Our tour group had around 25 people, but he still did a great job of answering everyone’s questions. Seeing how a community cooks and bathes in a geothermal area was very interesting (getting to eat a cob of sweet corn cooked in a hot pool was a highlight!). The views of the nearby geysers are quite good. Pōhutu Geyser did not go off while we were there, but you can’t blame nature for not adhering to a strict timetable!

We had initially assumed that our Guided tour included a self-guided walk of the geothermal trails (it does not), but a very kind staff member was able to sort everything out for us and get us access to the paths. The geothermal trails are very scenic, but quite similar to others around Rotorua. If your pass includes access to the trails I would highly recommend walking them, but I would not make them my only geothermal experience while visiting the region.

This village was phenomenal. We were looking around for a way to experience the Māori culture and also see some geysers and we came across Whakarewarewa. Initially I only saw this as a cultural experience, and when I asked the reception at our camping grounds on how we could see some geysers as well they informed us that we could see them on this walk too. She explained that this walk would have the same geysers in view as the Te Puia experience. What she did not tell us was that this was was owned and operated solely by the Māori people and Te Puia was government owned. I'm very glad that my money went directly to the Māori people of the area, so that choice was a good one.

Our tour was given by a local of the town, and I think most of the tours are. He had so many little jokes and made the walk so educational. We even got to have a piece of corn cooked from their hot pools! So delicious and a welcome surprise.

We also opted to do a self-guided walk around the area. The paths were easy to follow, and the views were spectacular. Pretty incredible bits of nature in the area.

The part that lost a star for me was that had ordered 2 Hangi (traditional) meals to have after our tour and I had said to the girl taking the orders that one of the meals needed to be vegetarian (twice). Unfortunately when we got back from our walks, we found 2 meat meals waiting for us. We informed the kitchen and they took one of the meals back to "fix". When we got it back, we noticed they had simply taken the meat out and replaced it with some corn. We still had remnants of meat in the box that needed to be picked to the side and contaminated pieces of vegetables set aside. I know it does not seem like a big deal to some, but this would have made my partner very sick if they had consumed it.

I would also recommend buying tickets when you get there because there were some options for exploration that weren't available online. You can do a self-guided walk, look through the gift shop, or have a meal while you wait for your tour to begin if you get there and the current tour is full.

Ever since we left Whakarewarewa Village, my friends and I can't stop thinking about it.
Wow - what a humbling and moving experience. Our tour guide was a lovely gentleman named Paora. His passion for his culture was evident, and he made us feel at home in his precious village. He was incredibly informative and answered all of our questions. His sense of humour was also top-notch. Will miss him!

It's the only living Maori village in Rotorua, and I highly recommend Whakarewarewa over some of the more 'touristy' Geothermal attractions.
Make sure to visit their cafe to try their Hangi Pies - what a fantastic meal!

We were lucky enough to catch a cultural performance, which was wonderful. What a talented group. It was incredibly interactive and they even taught us how to use the Poi, and to do the Haka!

THANK YOU to all of the staff, and Paora (Chief).
Oh, and make sure to try their special Geothermal cooked sweet corn!

For our value of payment and experience...we felt the guided tour with over 35 others in the group...was not to the best available of the expected experience around the village. Too big a group, many distractions from children who were distracted themselves, in a group this size, we were disappointed.
A smaller group where the guide can keep all engaged (adults and children) and nearby their side, would enable all to enjoy and hear all there is to say.
We felt alot of the guide's information was repeated. We did not feel the experience gave us much more than a pedestrian skim of the surface around the village and insight into the last 30+years. We didn't see anyone else, other than the tour guide and two cars from the village drive in and out... definitely felt like we donated to a cause that is not necessarily being reinvested in the village, many homes and surroundings could do with some maintenance 🥰

This experience was arranged via Princess Cruises as we were on one of their ships. For a day trip. We docked at Tauranga & we’re expecting a day trip. Pick up wasn’t until 10.30 a.m. & the journey to Rotorua took us 1.30 hours. Our guide met us at the coach & took us to a ceremonial outdoor theatre for an half hour show which was very good. We then spent 5 minutes outside a Māori hut & then we were told to go the the main hall for lunch. This should have been a traditional & tradionally cooked hangi. However, there was a very small pie with little to no filling which had been poorly cooked with a small salad with gravy. It was virtually inedible. There was no option to view the geezers & we were banned from that area. We were then expected to get back on the coach to go back to the ship. Overall an exceptionally poor tour. In fact Princess Cruises refunded 50% of the cost to acknowledge how bad it was.

Booked the tour $45 and then paid $30 to add on the cultural show. We enjoyed our day but just felt $75 per adult was relatively expensive. The guided tour was good, thankfully they did split the group into two as there was so many people, ended up with 25 ish people per guide. Our guide, I think her name was Mai, lived in the village and was very informative. All the staff we interacted with were helpful and cheery. You do see Te Puia geyser from over a fence, quite a good view. Piece of corn cooked in the geothermal geyser was a nice extra. Overall a nice day, just not blown away and perhaps expected abit more for $75.

I am having a problem writing this review as I have mixed feelings. When I booked a guided tour for the village I was told that I could have a private guided tour as long as we paid for 10 people, so that is what we did. When we first booked the tour our numbers were at 11 and I paid for 11 people. Unfortunately a few people could not make the trip, so when we were asked for final numbers, we no longer had 10 people, but we had still paid for 11 people. I was informed by a woman of the name Renee that we could no longer have a private tour because we only had 8 people rather than 10. I explained about having paid for 11 and that I was originally told that I could have a private tour for any number of people as long as we paid for 10. She would not budge on this and insisted that we had to moved to another time slot to join another group. I explained to her that I did not want to be refunded for anybody that could not come and that we needed this time slot or I would have to rearrange the whole day. She then told me that I either took the time slot she offered or that she would cancel the whole booking! I was not at all pleased, but as we were conducting a small group tour that included the village, I had no choice. When we got to the village to collect our tickets we were treated very poorly and did not feel welcome in any way. Fortunately we had an amazing guide and we enjoyed our tour, but I was still left with a very and taste and was shocked at the lack of customer service! I was embarrassed that our tour group had to experience this in a place that had one time been one of my favourites. We will choose any other experience before we ever choose this experience again. There are so may wonderful places in New Zealand that are happy to have small groups come and treat us far better than we were treated here! Never again!!

My husband and I were going to do the self-guided walking tour, but the guided tour was only $10 more so we opted for that. We were so glad we chose this option. We were in a small group of about 20. Our guide was a local who grew up in the village and currently lives there. She was informative and very forthcoming about the village and its inhabitants' history and daily lifestyle. We were able to visit the thermal pools that would not have been open to us on the self-guided tour. She took us to the communal kitchen and they even gave us corn on the cob, cooked in the thermal pool. It was a very intimate look into this very special place.

We had an incredible day at Whakarewarewa. We went as a family of 4 and chose the Combo option, which included the Village tour, Cultural performance and self-guided walk of the geothermal pools.
Our guide, Mariama, was exceptional. Her stories of growing up in the village was incredibly interesting and we felt really honoured to spend the time with her. It was also wonderful to see a haka live during the Cultural performance. Seeing the geothermal pools and an erupting geyser was also unforgettable.
Highly recommend this full experience during a visit to Rotorua.

We enjoyed our visit and guided village tour. The tour started promptly and we our guide was very informative. She explained life of old and present day differences and how they live in the village still and the impacts of the tours to their lifestyle. We didn’t feel rushed through and as the whole group booked on to the time we had booked was so big they split us up across two guides so that the group was manageable at around 20 people.
Lovely tasty corn on the cob provided as we walked around cooked in the Hangi which was a bonus!
Seeing the geyser from a couple of viewpoints meant that we decided not to pay to visit the tourist attraction on the other side who charge far more than this tour. So even if you’re mainly interested in seeing the geyser then this tour is worthwhile for that alone.
    Would recommend.
