About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- jmt4040 contributionsExcellent small group tour with very knowledgeable guide!Excellent tour. Stephen is very knowledgeable and easy to be around. We learned a lot about the area and he is very conscientious and respectful of the environment. Its clear that he loves where he lives and it is reflected in the tour. We appreciated the very small group! I wouldn't hesitate to book with Real Rotorua!!Written 28 December 2024
- 31delbertg0 contributionsThe way to tour North Island's thermal attractionsWhat a fabulous tour. We did the Thermal Path Tour and it was the best tour of our five day visit to North Island, and we liked all of our tours too! Our tour guide was so great and knowledgeable about everything we saw and heard. I especially enjoyed the concluding stop after a full day of exploring the natural beauty of the thermal sights of North Island, with the relaxing visit to the thermal swimming pools. Our tour with Real Rotorua tours was set up for us by Harriet McGregor of Thrifty Tours in NZ.Written 16 December 2024
- cheekyscot0 contributionsWonderful tour of the beautiful Lakes around Rotorua.Stephen was our very friendly and knowledgeable guide for this lovely tour. We were looking for something different to do as we are past the age of wanting high adrenaline activities. We started off at the Hamurana Springs nature reserve, a beautiful, serene place with natural cold springs occurring…and had a sacred place to the iwi of Ngāti Rangiwewehi. We walked through some extremely tall and beautiful Redwood Trees which made us feel incredibly small! Stephen talked about the trees, the plants and all the wonderful ferns. He pointed out trees that were used for medicinal purposes but others that were poisonous. From there we visited the Ōkere Falls, the Tutea Falls, Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) and finally Lake Tarawera. Stephen filled us in with the history and flora and fauna of each Lakeside. There was a reasonable amount of walking so some fitness is needed but well worth it to see the Real Rotorua.Written 1 December 2024
- Geoggy080 contributionsAmazing small tour off the beaten trackThis was our second tour with Stephen in 24 hours. We did the glow worms tour the night before so we knew that we were in for a great trip. Stephen curated a tour that gives you a real sense of the power of nature in the Rotarua area, ending with a dip in some lovely hot pools. Again the personal nature of the tour is the thing that was important to us. It was in stark contrast to a tour we did the next day at a Māori village in a group of about 25 people were we were barged into, shoved out of the way, and had our views of key things obscured by people taking pictures on their phones. None of this with Real Rotarua. Wish we could take Stephen with us to South Island and let him guide us there as well! Thank you Real Rotarua - two first class experiences that I would recommend to anyone.Written 8 November 2024
- serafinu20240 contributionsEverything a tour should be - Stephen sets a benchmark.Stephen thank you for taking such excellent care of us we felt safe and happy and entertained for 4 hours and we loved your knowledge of the region, geology, science, history, and current events. You were meant to be doing this - your earnestness and diligence and expertise is sound and your tours are fun and super interesting.Written 2 October 2024
- Clearance_bin0 contributionsIncredible and unique, once in a lifetime experienceI cannot say enough wonderful things about Stephen and the tour I took of New Zealand wilderness. I was the only one on the tour, which typically is awkward and unpleasant (and for this tour, rare), but Stephen was a wonderful and easy person to talk to. I learned so much about the region and it's ecosystem. He is really dedicated to caring for the environment and also providing the best quality experience for guests. I loved the walk through the woods at night, saw an abundance of wallabies, possums, stunning plants, fungi, thankfully minimal insects, except for of course, incredible glowworms. Stephen took the most stunning photos of and for me and I am extremely grateful for the experience. I highly recommend it to everyone. He has a fantastic eye for capturing images, knowledge and passion for the environment and continually works to upgrade his lighting and other equipment to provide an extremely high quality experience for guests.Written 25 August 2024
- 43gillianp0 contributionsA Rotorua MustAmazing. Magic. Breathtaking. The Lakes tour was a definite highlight of my trip to NZ. The discovery of stunning crystal clear lakes, towering redwoods, waterfalls, and ancient volcanic craters was expertly accompanied by well researched local knowledge. Stephen’s passion for showing the wonders of Rotorua made the tour exciting and fun. I highly recommend Explore The Lakes Tour to all who manage to spend a day in Rotorua. You will not be disappointed!Written 25 June 2024
- ZYD1145140 contributionsBeautiful lakes and good guideMan, it is almost the best tour in my NZ trip. It is winter and only me booked this trip. Stephen was still very warm, explaining everything I was curious about during this trip-- and took photos for me. Since there was only me, it was better than a normal private trip because Stephen was so professional about these lakes and springs, and his hot chocolate!Written 9 June 2024
- Tour605530799360 contributionsDon’t miss this!I was traveling “solo” with my infant baby girl. Our guide and driver Stephen is not only a highly knowledgeable person but also very well traveled. He showed the beautiful lakes and the springs around. Also told a lot about the native flora and fauna as well as Māori tradition and culture. I highly recommend this tour!Written 30 April 2024
- Terryt00 contributionsStunning and awe inspiring! We were super lucky to have hit the jackpot with this company. Stephen picked us up from our motel and it was an amazing experience from our first to our last stop. We chose the ‘Explore the Lakes Tour’ and were so impressed with everything we experienced and absolutely wrapt with our choice. If you want a unique, informative, nature-appreciating tour choose this! We feel like we got to see part of the lesser known Rotorua that everyone should know. Take the road less travelled! This is the REAL Rotorua. We couldn’t rate more highly. Thank you so very much Stephen and Rosa!Written 17 April 2024
- Explorer500824035420 contributionsGreat to cover all the necessary lakes in RotoruaAmazing time with Stephen, visited so many spots, super educational and a great tour guide who goes the extra mile for his clients! - Jet3520 contributionsGreat find! So glad we got on the excursion!Great find! Knowledgeable guide! From the start, Stephen showed wonderfully customer friendly service. Then with each stop he provided great insight and history of the area. From the natural spring, redwoods and the trail by the rafters, to the volcanic history and geography of the area, he was able to provide us with answers to all our questions. The hot chocolate and cookie break eas appreciated as was the up close view of glow worm beads.Written 6 March 2024

After that Stephen took us to a trail that leads to a beautiful wall full of glow worms (as he likes to say: " a galaxy full of glow worms"! It was truly magical. He knows not only a lot about the glow worm, but also about all the flora and fauna surrounding it. And he is happy and very excited/motivated to share all that information. This was our first trip to New Zealand and had an itinerary with many activities at multiple locations in Australia and New Zealand. My grown son (23) and I were in Rotorua after visiting Hobbiton and decided to find an evening activity with this popping up. Luckily for us, we found a couple of last minute openings for a Sunday tour. Ultimately when I asked my son of his favorite activity this was #1 on his list and I feel the same. While I personally feel Rotortua is the city we visited that I would least likely return to as a visitor on a tight schedule, this is the thing to do when you find yourself spending the evening in the area.
The small group and private owner/guide approach makes this a fun excursion. The knowledge of the area, photos that are taken, and everything being inclusive as part of the very reasonable price was fantastic.
The journey through the woods includes raised roots and some uneven ground so please consider your condition to handle the trail at night. In our case boots were made available as it had rained earlier in the day.
Assuming you are game, this is a fun and educational walk that builds to seeing and learning about glow worms. On this particular night the forest canopy came to life with light as we turned off our flashlights. Along the way you will learn about many other things and in our case we got to see a mom/baby wallaby.
I highly recommend you take the opportunity to experience this unique experience.

This was an amazing tour and Stephen was fantastic guide! We were going to try to find glow worms ourselves and decided last minute to just book a tour with someone. We got really lucky finding this one!
He said he would show us a “galaxy of glow worms” and it did not disappoint. We also saw a great sunset and learned a lot about the local environment on the hike. The hot chocolate at the end was also a great touch.
Thank you for the great experience!

A really unique and cool experience. Our guide, Stephen, pick up in a bus to head out to a more remote part of the forest with absolutely beautiful view of the stars at night. From there everyone gets multiple flashlights (torches) and you're off into the woods where Stephen has an abundance of local knowledge of all of the different plants, animals, and insects, keeping an eye out for the most interesting and letting you experience them firsthand. At night this is a unique experience where you see things you could never see during the day. The highlight of course is the glow worms of which there were thousands and absolutely stunning to see and walk up to at night, but all of the things we saw were amazing!
It was mildly disconcerting to be driven out to the woods at night since we were the only two on the tour during the slow season is the one thing I will call out. That said we got comfortable with Stephen quickly and it was a lot of fun from there.

This walking tour is offered close to Rotorua, saving a drive and expense of traveling to the more distant and well known glow worm caves. The tour was spectacular and took the small group through the Forrest to a protected cliff side loaded with glow worms after a 20 minute ride in the leader’s minibus. The leader, Stephan, is an enthusiastic naturalist who brought us much more than viewing glow worms, including introductions to natural nighttime flora and fauna. We could inspect the glow worms and their strategy for catching insect prey up close. Each of us were handed excellent flash lights/torches to avoid tripping so overall, very easy walk for any age (we are 72 years old). Extra bonus was sighting a group of wallabies that had the run of the nighttime field where we parked. Stephen took photos of each couple or individual in front of the waterfall similar to what is shown on the web site.

I genuinely cannot recommend this tour enough, it was the absolute highlight of my trip and the coolest thing I've done in both NZ and many other countries. Stephen is so passionate and knowledgeable. The small size of the group made it a magical experience. Stephen takes great photos, obviously perfected through trial and error, and taught me so much about the NZ bush and, obviously, glow worms. The glow worms are spectacular, you get up close and can truly marvel at their beauty in the serenity of the forest. The approximately 2 hour walk is not challenging and being at night lets you experience another aspect of the forest. I've done 3 glowworm tours recently and this is by far the best, I'll be back and will be recommending it to anyone I know visiting Rotorua.

My wife and I participated in both the Thermal Path Tour and the Nocturnal Glow Worm Adventure. What a truly marvelous day! Stephen brings superb understanding of the volcanic history of the area around Rotorua. He was able to impart his expertise clearly, showing numerous examples in the landscape. He provided sufficient geological context to make the volcanic features come alive. However, the evening Glow Worm Adventure was truly amazing. My wife and I had seen glow worms in the Waitomo Caves in 2017. It all you saw then was luminescence on the cave ceiling. On this adventure through a rain forest at night, Stephen showed us glow worms up close. He figured out the proper lighting condition to make the so-called glow worms and then lines visible. What a true joy to behold. Truly an experience to remember. Both tours were small group (8) that made everything Stephen had to offer accessible and meaningful. I recommend Real Rotoroa to anyone with enthusiasm.

Steve picked us up at our hotel and immediately started giving us information about the area
Showed us interesting sights about geothermal areas near our hotel
Took a quick detour to an incredible location to see the sunset over the lake and mountains
Steven was extremely knowledgeable and equally humour in his delivery making everyone feel comfortable with the surroundings ( pitch dark rainforest ).
He walked us in to the dark forest stopping regularly to show us native plant species along the way
The glow worms were fascinating but Steven’s description of them made it all the better
To finish off the amazing tour he provides hot chocolate and cookies while explaining the stars in the Rotorua night sky
If you are in Rotorua
Don’t miss Real Rotorua
You won’t be disappointed!!

Stephens passion for the local enviroment is palpable and he makes sure that you all get to experience this at an easy to follow pace.
The time he takes to set up the photo opportunities and even better he sends you his photos which are on another level for you at no charge makes this even better.
We have cancelled our glow worm experiences elsewhere as cannot see this being beaten.
This is a proper personal experience and cannot be missed

When we tried to check availability on 9/9 for 2 seniors, the site errored with requiring 1 to 11 travelers. Is that a problem with the site? Is the price different for seniors? Thanks, Ted
Written 16 May 2019
Sorry you have trouble. I don’t know about a senior price. One of us was a senior when we took the tour, but that person paid the same price as everyone else. Have you tried to email the tour operator yet? We did communicate via email with him prior to our tour, and he responded as quickly as his schedule allowed. He offers other tours so he’s busy in the daytime with customers, but he replied to each of our emails when he could. Happy travels!
