The mud baths were a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon after walking around all the thermal springs in Rotorua. Our skin felt unbelievably smooth after, but be ready to smell like sulphur for a few days!

The guide for our tour (March 17th) was passionate, informative, energetic and interactive. This made our walking experience a great one. The mud pools were fun - I felt like a child again. The subsequent effect was serenity and calm - I slept that night for 10 hours straight - for a menopausal woman this is incredible 😲

I had visited Te Puia when last visited NZ. This time, I had picked Wai-O-Tapu but decided not to drive half way back to Taupo and there were reviews about how their geyser was activated with soap. So instead we went to Hell’s Gate for the guided Geothermal Walk. We arrived at opening time 10am and already there was a queue. But only because the staff take their time with each customer - only took 10 minutes to get in. There’s a little cafe and souvenir shop while you wait for the 10.30am tour. Guide with the long name, Ngati, was fantastic. The tour was advertised as 1.5 hours, but ours took 2 hours. We loved every minute of it. Ngati makes the place come alive and how it integrates with Māori life. You don’t need to see a geyser to tick it off your list. Don’t rush around in half the time on a self-guided tour - you’d miss all the little things that Ngati explained - from the bubbling and steaming earth and mud pools, to the plants and birds. The bush walk was a serene interlude and Medicine Lake magical. You can do some wood carving afterwards or add on the mud pool experience. We left very happy with our visit to Hell’s Gate.

Historical picturesque landscapes of the geothermal region, coupled with the relaxing mud pools. A must visit.

Really interesting guided tour around the geothermal area. The guide was very informative and humorous. Thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

A casual one hour walk through this area following a provided guide map gives you excellent views of various geothermal hot pools featuring steaming water and bubbling hot mud, steaming cliffs, and a hot waterfall. Good value for money and you receive an introductory lessen in Maori carving at the end of your walk. You can also take a geothermal mud bath as an optional extra.

It was a beautiful day to start! Our guide Te was very informative, professional, and fun. He got us involved and we learned about thermodynamics, Māori culture and customs, history, trees and plants. The mud bath and spa exceeded my expectations as well! The facilities and staff were excellent!

Amazing journey and walk through a maze of mud pools and smoke and smell!!!!!!!!!!!! Had fun doing wood carving too Amazing piece of earth surface!!

We had a wonderful experience here. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Being covered in mud made us 10 years younger! (Maybe not but is was soothing and fun.)

Worth doing the guided walk to find out about the culture and stories of how Hell’s Gate came to be. Mud bath is different. Definitely worth a visit and pamper yourself with something you can’t do every where

Advised by friends that we must visit a thermal spa when staying near Taupo. Really enjoyed it, super well organized the staff were brilliant and friendly even though the site was very busy.

Self guided walk a must.. even in the rain it was fabulous. Mud bath very enjoyable and Sulphur pool terrific…. But prepare to stink later.. no matter how long you stay in the shower the mud will keep coming. So impressed with our skin afterwards.

The geo thermal walk was a highlight. Fascinating and well worth it. Very accessible and plenty of highlights. The whole Hells Gate experience is a must for any visit to Rotorua.
