- pauladX9391OM0 contributionsDo the guided tourI had visited Te Puia when last visited NZ. This time, I had picked Wai-O-Tapu but decided not to drive half way back to Taupo and there were reviews about how their geyser was activated with soap. So instead we went to Hell’s Gate for the guided Geothermal Walk. We arrived at opening time 10am and already there was a queue. But only because the staff take their time with each customer - only took 10 minutes to get in. There’s a little cafe and souvenir shop while you wait for the 10.30am tour. Guide with the long name, Ngati, was fantastic. The tour was advertised as 1.5 hours, but ours took 2 hours. We loved every minute of it. Ngati makes the place come alive and how it integrates with Māori life. You don’t need to see a geyser to tick it off your list. Don’t rush around in half the time on a self-guided tour - you’d miss all the little things that Ngati explained - from the bubbling and steaming earth and mud pools, to the plants and birds. The bush walk was a serene interlude and Medicine Lake magical. You can do some wood carving afterwards or add on the mud pool experience. We left very happy with our visit to Hell’s Gate.Written 16 March 2025

Went for the mudbath first thing in the morning and then soaked in the mineral pools. Would totally do again. Mornings are great as less people.
Key points: Mudbaths are time limited, however the mineral hot pools are not. Soak in the mudbath, shower then relax away to your hearts content in the hot pools.
Pro tips:
1. Hire the towels there, don't take your own - the mud and pools are high in mineral content so it takes ages to wash out that muddy smell just from your togs. Trust me just hire the towels
2. They do supply soap wash there in the showers, which if you're going first thing in the morning take a while to warm up. Would recommend you take your own though and spend a decent time leisurely cleaning yourself before you leave
3. The minerals can be strong in the eyes in the hot pools, as such imagine what it does to jewellery. It's common knowledge not to wear jewelry in any mineral pool for this reason. Silver will take a while to return to its normal color, lower grade even longer, 24k gold generally won't but anything lower will get a rose tint before returning. If you want to test the authenticity of your jewelry this would be it 🤣
4. Afterwards have a good drink of water to replenish at the cafe. The shop here is one of the cheaper priced stores at tourist spots so recommend buying here.
Enjoy your beauty soak!

We had a great time at Hell's Gate. We purchased the full experience, and were able to explore the grounds and participate in the wood carving. Walking around the thermal pools was fun and interesting. We learned a lot about the different kinds of pools and what they were traditionally used for. The carving was a unique experience, and the staff was helpful, informative and friendly. The mud spa was relaxing and fun as well. You get 20 minutes in the mud spa, then have three other pools you can rotate through after showering off the mud. Then there are showers with soap available afterwards so you can be clean enough to get into your street clothes.

This is my family's favorite attraction in Rotorua. We return here annually to enjoy the Mud Baths and began when our son was about 5-years old and have been for the past 3 years. If you are like us, "mud" is an extremely taboo substance that we do not allow our child to ever come in contact with. As such, the Mud Baths is a truly unique experience where our child is not only encouraged to "play" with the mud but is actively encouraged to rub it all over not only their own body but their parents' body too.
For those who are seeking the benefits of the mud, this is the only place in NZ where you can get the authentic Rotorua mud. It will leave your skin polished and smooth for a month. In addition to providing a significant beautifying treatment, you can very easily share it with your family and children so a win-win experience. The attendants tend to group families separately from couples so that they have a more intimate experience if desired.
The most disappointing part of the Mud Baths is that it is limited to 20 minutes and so is very short. I could easily sit in the Mud Baths for over an hour. Fortunately, they do have some incredibly high quality mineral baths which the cost of the Mud Baths also includes. You can easily spend an hour just soaking in the mineral baths. The facility has extremely good bathing and changing facilities for men and women. The family changing facilities are extremely small and can only hold one parent and one child at a time.
If you are planning to coming, I highly recommend purchasing your own inexpensive swimwear before coming because the mud will likely destroy it since the mud completely permeates the fabric and leaves an extremely strong odor of sulphur. Also, the towel rental of $5 is an essential because if you should bring your own towels, they will also smell strongly of sulphur. Also, I highly recommend coming to just do the Mud Bath experience first thing in the morning and avoid the walk.

The mud baths and sulfur spas were nice but these were community pools with at least another group or two in each. The staff quickly rushes you out of the mud bath after 20 minutes so they can load in the next group. Changing is kind of a nightmare as well since they only tell you about the community large open no-privacy changing rooms near the entrance. There are several private, lockable rooms with showers to the left down by the sulfur pools. We opted to pay for the unguided geothermal walk following our spa time and it was enjoyable; they honored the package pricing since we also did the spa, just make sure you keep your receipt to show them. The natural features were stunning and it didnt take too much time

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that some parts of your experience did not meet your expectations. Our promotional photos are meant to highlight the range of experiences we offer and are not intended to suggest a private setting. However, we understand how images featuring only two people may have been misleading, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention.
Our 20 minutes time limit was put in place on the basis of health and safety. The mud bath has a higher heat energy than our other pools, which can cause an increase in core body temperature and blood pressure. Before we opened to the public, we had an advisory team of doctors, scientists, osteopaths and kaumatua (Māori elder with healing knowledge) assess how we can safely operate our mud baths. Hence, the 20-minute time limit was put in place.

The walk and tour are informative and astounding, the walk takes about an hour and there is lots to see but beware it is uneven ground so take good shoes.
The wood carving is good fun with clear instructions from the staff.
The spar is well organised but highly recommend talking the hired towels and swimsuits to save ruining your own as it takes ages for the smell of sulphur to leave your clothing.
Roses with sensitive eyes take care as the sulphur really stings the eyes and heed to advice not to put the clay on the forehead to stop it dripping into your eyes.
Also for the shy the main changing area is communal! But there are 4 separate shower cubicles around by the cleansing pools.
Otherwise great way to spend an afternoon or morning!

We loved doing the mud spa, it was so fun and the staff are great and make sure you’re only in the mud for the right amount of time so that you get the amazing soft feeling without irritating your skin. The other pools are very warm and relaxing, it’s really cool to look out over an area of the geothermal park whilst in the pools. We rented towels and swimsuits from the park to avoid damaging our own swimsuits, it was really easy to find suits that fit and it’s cheap to do - I would recommend as it saves you bringing home costumes that smell of sulphur that can make everything else smell in your bags and stops you staining your own belongings.
We also love a plunge pool so it was great to jump in there at the end to feel refreshed. We’d definitely recommend a visit!

We visited Hells gates mud spa a few days ago.
Not cheap at $90 per person and very cheeky to then ask an additional $5 for a towel… come on guys , that’s a joke.
They kindly offered the use and hire of swim wear at a cost of $5 to save using your own swim suits and the smell and damage the mud pools do to your gear.
The experience was very well done and the guys monitoring your time in the mud baths were fun and happy to take photos.
I think more needs to be said about getting the mud close or in your eyes as I and others were suffering from very sore and red eyes after the mud found its way in.
They do offer drops to help clear .
It was fun and we enjoyed the experience

We found the service and staff to be of a high standard. The facilities were very good. Very expensive for the 20minutes allowed in the mud so not great value for money. The smell that remains on your swim outfit and towel is awful, and this spreads to ALL other clothes that get washed together. Smell (like Shrek’s swamp) still lingering after multiple soaking in various solutions (ammonia, bicarb soda, vinegar, napisan). I would recommend other visitors to wear swimmers and a towel that you don’t mind discarding after use, and only clothes for the few days after that can also be thrown out before they contaminate all other clothes. We had fun for the brief time that we were in the mud.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We work really hard to provide our customers with the best possible customer service and we are pleased to see this was reflected during your last visit. Unfortunately, the smell of the natural sulphur in our pools is definitely unique! While you soak in our mud and sulphur pools your pores are opened 100%. Therefore the sulphur smell lingers and can exude from your pores for up to 48 hours after your experience. This is why we recommend to customers to either wear old swimwear or to hire some from reception for $5 per item. Cleaning instructions should have been given to you during check-in and we do apologise that this was missed during your experience. A previous customer has recommended washing your swimwear and clothes with 'odour blasters' to remove the sulphur smell from your belongings. Once again we are so sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.

The Hell’s gate experience is worth every penny! The guides for the geothermal walk are so knowledgeable and interested in the subject and are more than happy to answer your questions and have a conversation.

Well, okay, now..... you may not buy into the healing properties of a Sulphur springs but just to say, after the mud bath 20 minutes, during which we applied the mud beneath our feet in the finished pools, to our entire bodies, focusing on upper and face, now, 8 days later, our skin has never looked so good and been so healthy!
But first, the self tour through a couple of acres of swirling, bubbling Sulphur pools, surrounded by forest; all pools being different in terms of temperature and content making them all unique, was the best intro to Hell's Gate.
We then changed into our cheapest swimwear and selected from one of about 5 self contained mud baths. Each is like a tiny, thigh height pool, with an inside bench to sit on as you grab mud from beneath your feet and spread it wherever; and keep spreading it, and adding more, and rinsing it off in the sulfur water (very healthy and healing waters), to then add more mud!
There are stone, cave-like change rooms, with lots of showers to rinse off and clean - we all chose to do a full shower so brought our soap, shampoo, etc. Good to know that the neither the change room nor showers are private, but we were all so concerned with getting it all done, and had towels they gave us, we faced the shower, wrapped the towels around us, and into the change room. If you've got an issue with privacy, you could change in the toilets.
Great service, and a wonderful experience!!!! Staff are amazing!
