Do the walk with a guide because you will get so much more out of the experience. 3 hours will allow for the walk and soaking in the hot springs. Remember to take a bag for the wet suit! The employees were good and conscientious. The sulfur smell is subtle and hardly noticeable! I found it better than Iceland’s geo thermal areas!

Kia Ora val m, Thank you for taking the time to share your positive feedback with us, we are so happy that you enjoyed your time at Hell's Gate! The guided geothermal walk is a great way to learn more about our geothermal landscapes, history and culture before soaking in the same sulphurous mud and waters. We hope to see you again soon! Ngā mihi, The Hell's Gate Management Team.

Worth a visit but Wai-O-Tapu is better
Dec 2019
Worth visiting if you have a couple of hours to kill, but for a superior geothermal experience, definitely go to Wai-O-Tapu instead. The spa was heaving with people and didn’t look inviting but the staff are very welcoming and helpful.

Not worth the time and money
Nov 2019
We booked the mud bath and the walking tour. The geothermal site looks like a hell hole, the formation is not impressive. For the Geothermal Site visit, it is better to go to Wai-O-Tapu or Te Puia.
The mud bath tub is just a partitioned outdoor tub. It is not mud bath. It is muddy water bath. There is a small box of mud on the side for the customers to put on their body. The tub is only 30" deep, you cannot even lie down to relax. Then, we were escorted to the sulphur pool. You sit at the pool while you can hear the road traffic behind the screen. It is just not relaxing and there is nothing to look out. Don't waste the money.

Amazing Place
Nov 2019
The whole walk is not too strenuous but very informative. The hot springs and geysers were mind blowing. You must be come accustomed to the strong sulphur smells but it will not put you of visiting this once in a lifetime visit. At the end of the walk you can put your feet in one of the cooler mud baths and do Maori carving of a lasting memory to take home. A must to visit if you are in the area.

Smelly but spectacular!
Oct 2019 • Family
This was a much bigger site than expected, took us a good hour and a half to walk around the well marked path. Amazing experience, we self guided and were the only people on the track. Only took us a few minutes to adjust to the sulpher smell. We took advantage of the co-location with the baths, and highly recommend trying the mud bath experience, too much fun, and a week later my skin still feels smooth and soft. A very down to earth place to visit, and the staff are lovely - just ask if you need anything, they are beautifully accommodating and friendly.

Exciting, steamy, interesting walk
Sep 2019
We did the walk on our own and found it very interesting, all the geysers and hot bubbling mud... The signs were clear and interesting. I'm glad we came across a tour group and saw we could touch the mud in one place, so we did. I'd love to go back there one day and try the hot pools.

Like an alien planet
Sep 2019
The smell when we got out of the car was putrid, but you do get used to it. After paying we got a map and did the self-guided walk. The map was full of interesting information and complimented the sign boards along the walk. This park did not have a lot of high fences so beware when taking little children (but still go - just hang on to them).

It is like an alien landscape, white, yellow and steamy. Took us about an hour and a half to wander around having a look at everything. The noise is amazing. You might not see any steam, but you can hear boiling right beside the track. Heaps of pools of boiling water and mud. Pools range in depths from ground to 25m, temperatures up to 120oC and ph as low as 1. At the Medicine Lake you can scoop out the mud, but right at the water's edge it is just gravel. There is also a lovely waterfall that is around 40oC. Part of the walk takes you through some bushland with amazing orange (from the minerals) trunk trees. At the end of the walk you get to do your own Maori carving, which was harder than it looked. The man seals it with a stain so it can come back to Australia. There is also a mud pool you can soak your feet in.

Definitely do the Guided tour
Aug 2019 • Couples
Definitely take the guided walk, which was included in our entry. There is also time to wander around on your own if you want, and put your feet in the mud pool (no extra charge).
Our guide, Peata, was the best part of a great experience. She is the only Maori guide they have (the site is now owned by a Chinese company), and she is a native of the area. Peata made our tour about the history of her people in the area, the Maori understanding of geothermal phenomena, the traditional arts she has learned, and the culture her grandmother raised her in. Her tour is not about the science, so if that's more up your alley, choose one of the other guides. I loved learning about how Maori warriors used the silver fern (ask her!)
Overall, this is a classic geothermal experience -- eerie, cool, amazing. The small snack bar does a nice sandwich or sausage roll.
