      AMAZING ACTIVITY!!
Honestly such a cool experience. My tour guide Dave took us through all the narrow holes in the caves and explained everything so well. I am so glad I did this. Defo recommend it to everyone who wants to see the Glowworm caves. Black Water Rafting is soo much fun. Nothing you should miss out on!

An experience you will never forget!
I did the Waitomo Wanderer with Blackwater Rafting and Hobbiton. It was one of the best things I have ever done. I will never forget this day. The best thing about this tour is that you get picked up in the morning and after that, things work out on their own. No hassle or stress, just enjoying the day :-)

      Amazing day trip from Auckland
Not long been in NZ but heard good things about Waitomo glow worm caves and Hobbiton, was pleased to know I could do it all in one day. Waitomo Wanderer was an unreal day trip, we did the Black Labrynth tour in the caves and our guide Kelly was so much fun, would 100% recommend the black water rafting. Hobbiton was beautiful to see too, it feels like you are in a different world. Overall the tour was one I would recommend to others as it is so well organised and don't have to worry about anything.

      Awesome experience!!
The trip was amazing! We departed early in the morning and the rafting must be your life time experience which you would need to go through one of the Waitomo cave and some big jumps into water with very passionate and helpful staffs. After the tour you could get a warm shower and hot soup and food to fresh up. Hobbiton in the afternoon was a peaceful tour even if you aren't a movie enthusiasts. Overall the whole experience is nice and smooth, bus divers are always informative and willing to help, making sure you have enough time in each spot. Recommended for all!

      Exciting, thrilling and super fun!
Our first guide Muzza (Murray) made us feel comfortable as soon as we hopped on the shuttle bus and made sure my friend felt settled as she gets bad car sickness. His knowledge of the local surroundings was a nice touch as well as the little towns on our way to Waitomo. Waitomo Black Water Rafting was absolutely an experience to remember. The highlight of this tour was the harmonous singing of our tour guides Ashley and Pippin was a mixture of melodic and hauntingly beautiful. Also with complimentry toasted bagels and hot soup (especially after the refreshingness of cave water). Hobbiton was as i had imagined it. From start to finish i was overly impressed with our tour guide (charlie?) his charasmatic personality and genuine care for his group visitors made my experience more worth wild! The stunning scenery was breath taking heading over to the Green Dragon with a complimentry drink (cider, self brewed beer or ginger beer) and learning on what was happening behind the scenes was amazing! Then our driver back to Rotorua Keith even stopped off and made a contribution to a road side stall for fresh farm eggs which really topped my trip off. Hats off to you guys!!

North Island MUST DO! Black water rafting + Hobbiton
Absolutley reccomended as a must do while you're in the north island! From start to finish the tour was incredible. Muzzah was our first driver and knew so much knowledge about the different areas we were driving through and was very accomodating to the fact I get a bit car sick! Black water rafting was an experience that helped me push my limits in a way that I enjoyed every part of the tour, having never been in a cave before as soon as I stepped in the excitment overwhelmed me. From jumping off small waterfalls, stunning cave views and floating down the cave in the dark surrounded by gloworms (accompanied by a beautiful Maori song sung by the amazing guides Pippin and Ashley). Next on our stop was Hobbiton, I have previously watched the films but wasn't what you would call "obssessed" with the movies. Charlie was our guide and was so bubbly and passionate about showing everyone around on tour, he was very smiley and approachable about any questions and didn't make us feel rushed as people took their time to take pictures of the hobbit holes! My favourite part was the Green Dragon where you go for a complimentary Apple cider, non-alcoholic ginger beer or their traditional Ale (all handcrafted and exclusive to Hobbiton). The set up in the Green Dragon was out of this world and really made you feel like you were in a movie! Overall I loved Hobbition and will be taking my family to experience it themselves! You can capture stunning photos to add to your travel album and the service you get from all the staff makes you feel extreamly welcome, whether you're into Hobbiton movies or not it is definatly worth the trip. Then we head off back to our accomodation, Keith was our driver and being a classic kiwi he stopped and grabbed some free range eggs from a roadside stall which I think was awesome for people to see how local kiwis support each other.

More than just your average tour!
I travelled with the Waitomo Wanderer from Rotorua over Waitomo and Hobbiton, all the way back to Auckland - and let me say, there wasn't one boring minute! Our driver Chrissie (what a legend!) told us many interesting facts about the region on our way to the Waitomo Caves. At the caves, we had enough time to grab a quick coffee before heading into the Black Labyrinth ( a MUST DO!). Afterwards, we jumped back on the bus, which took us through beautiful scenery directly to Hobbiton. Here, we simply got our tickets and enjoyed the tour - no queuing or waiting! On our way back to Auckland Mustafa provided us with some pillows and snacks to nap after a long day out. In a nutshell, one of the most relaxed and informative ways of seeing those 2 MUST DOs on the North Island!

      Fun, Easy and Exciting :)
Great day out. Very early start but well worth it. The Black labyrinth really wakes you up and then you have a nice afternoon at Hobbiton to end the day. Good option for some with no transport and limited time.

Not as attractive as it looks in the pics.
First of all the boat right is literally a second long. There is nothing much to see there. Plus you cant even take pictures, i guess they know that their secret will b out if they allowed.

Jump on Board if you have no transport.
Impressed with the very knowledgeable bus drivers and guides coming from Auckland down to the mighty Waikato and onto Waitomo first thing in the morning with a pickup from cambridge i-SITE. Book the two cave combo value for money.

      Fab day out!
Black Abyss is an amazing experience to see the caves! Abseiling, ziplining, climbing waterfalls, tubing in the caves and seeing the glowworms was an incredible trip! The drivers at Headfirst are really informative and well organised with picks ups/drop offs. Little extras are given along the way with bits of information about places you drive through and what else you can get up to!

Waitomo Glow Worm Caves and Hobbiton
An excellent choice! I was picked up right out of YHA hostels at 6.30am and was taken to Waitomo Glow Worm Caves with a small group. The driver, Keith, was a source of endless information - such a pleasure to talk to! The Caves themselves were spectacular. Following that some of us were dropped off at nearby caves for a couple of hours but Keith took this time to take us for a bushwalk, showing us around the various flora in the area - it was like having a free botanical tour! Following this we were dropped off at Hobbiton in the early afternoon. Hobbiton, of course, is a gem - a true dream for LOTR fans. The tour guide was great, and we had plenty of time to look around and take photos. Following a complementary beer at the Green Dragon we headed off back to Rotorua. The driver to Rotorua, Christine, was pleasant and she was telling us snippets of information all the way back. All in all a highly recommended tour!

Don’t go on the “Glowworm Timesaver” unless you want to waste time
My sister and I were picked up from Auckland at 6 am, but despite this being advertised as a “timesaver” tour, we didn’t make it back until nearly 4 pm. The drive to the caves took 2.5 hours-as expected-but as we were only seeing the glowworm caves (which were magnificent), we didn’t continue with most of our group to Hobbiton. The company facilitied this very poorly. First, we were driven to Cambridge, an hour away, and then left there for an hour to catch an intercity bus (an external company), which took over 3 hours to get back to Auckland. Therefore, what really should have been a 2.5 hour journey back from the caves was turned into an over 5 hours journey. The caves themselves only took 45 minutes to complete, so nearly 8 hours of travel doesn’t seem like a “timesaver” option. Severely disappointed, as this ridiculous travel arrangement wasn’t well advertised in the description of the tour. For so much money, having spent most of the day on the bus, we really expected better. Can only recommed to people who want to waste money and time. Shame it took away from the beauty of the caves. Future tourists would be better off organising their own way there and back, as it would be shorter and cheaper. The company really should operate the “timesaver” option only if they can actually get people back to Auckland in a reasonable amount of time. Not to be completely negative, the tour guides themselves were friendly and informative, this complaint is just directed at the management of the tours.

      Perfect
A great underground adventure that everyone should try. Educational excursion in the Glowworm caves. Amazing and knowing bus driver who drove the buss on the narrow roads like a combat aircraft in the canyon. I take back every word that women do not know how to drive a car :)

      AMAZING day
I left Rotorua with Waitomo Wanderer back to Auckland. It was the best experience I had! I did the Black Labyrinth and I absolutely enjoyed it! This tour combines the two most important activities in the North Island. It is also an easy way to save some time. Definitely recommended

The caves were cool and Hobbiton was great, but I wish we had just gone to those two spots on our own. The drive from Rotorua is totally doable- not long at all- and the roads are fine. Our guide made us late to the caves, then spent time asking us to sign up for an additional cave tour, only to find out that there was not enough availability for that tour. When we asked questions like, 'where do we meet after the cave tour?" and "how, where, and when will we have lunch?" our guide was aggravated and didn't ever really answer the questions. We went on the "free walk" offered after the cave tour and our guide sprinted through it, not giving us time for pictures or to just take it in. I assumed we were pressed for time, but at the end of the walk, the guide said that we would wait for an HOUR in the little picnic table area until the other cave tour was complete. We had not had lunch at that point and there were no vendors in the picnic area. I asked if we could go into the town to get lunch. The guide complied and took us there, but should I have had to ask? Was the plan really for us to sit in the woods for an hour, rather than exploring the town and eating? By the time all of that was settled, we barely had time to eat. Everyone in our group was frustrated and disappointed that such a pricy excursion was being so poorly executed. You don't need a tour company to see either of these places. Just go on your own.

First things first, if you rented a car, buy tickets direct from the caves and Hobbiton, DO NOT take this “tour”. My family and I travel a lot and were highly unsatisfied with our days outing with Headfirst Travel.

They do not offer a “tour”, they are a taxi service that drives you to the various actual tours and arranges your tickets.

We were told to arrive at the Rotorua welcome center @ 6:35am in late June, then the bus arrived 30 minutes late, so we were all freezing. It was a small bus and was already full when it arrived so my family could not sit together. On the 2 hour bus ride the driver kept saying on your left, on your right and describing things but the windows were totally fogged up and we couldn’t see a thing. The front of bus was warm, the back where me and one of my sons were was freezing. The drivers microphone needed a recharge after the first hour so she just talked louder but the bus was so loud with a rattling cage in the back and road noise we couldn’t hear any comments.

The other main issue I had was how much time we just sat in the bus WAITING for other passengers to be dropped off and confirmed at different adventures. I expected all passengers were doing the same two tours we were doing but no, we stopped at multiple other caves/adventures and had to wait each time for the driver to go in, check them in, confirm plans, then come back. As you can imagine, this gets very frustrating when you have limited time to spend on vacation. Not to mention we then had to go back and pick all these people up and most of the time they weren’t ready as they were eating or finishing their own tour.

Check the actual tours for my reviews of them but be ready to waste a lot of time if you take this taxi service billing themselves as a tour operator.

Hi Todd Thank you so much for your valuable feedback it certainly appears you had a less than an enjoyable day. We endeavour to provide a memorable experience for a range of customers and clearly we got some parts of your trip wrong. We apologise. There are several points in your feedback that we can immediately work on and improve. We take a massive pride in our drivers and consider one of our key differences is the way in which they interact with our customers! One of our key company focuses and passions is that our drivers are BALL promoters BALL stands for Bringing Along Local Legends) to deliver our customers a unique and memorable day. We know our BALL Team driver / guides go out of their way to make every trip an interesting one and we need to give them the tools to help achieve this. In this case it sounds like you don’t think the driver has a acheived this core value and we have already followed up. We are disappointed ourselves that the day trip did not leave on time and that you had to wait so long for your departure / this was due to another passenger being 20 minutes late. Our driver Kristine had also notified us off the battery on the microphone and we have now fixed this. Honestly, we really appreciate your feedback and feel it is the only way we can grow and improve as a business. We have taken everything very seriously and will try to make things more clearly from the start. Regards Headfirst Travel Team

We had a great trip to the Waitomo Caves with Headfirst Travel. Our guide was friendly and pointed out many sights to and from the caves. She took care of our tickets and made sure we had a good day. We asked to to be dropped in downtown Rotorua and our guide happily obliged. We visited two caves on the tour and had a great time. I would highly recommend the tour.

    Headfirst is an awesome company!!
They picked me up from hostel in Rotorua (very early in the morning) and drove the 1.5 hours to the Waitomo Caves. My bus driver was happy to answer any questions and informed me of some really cool NZ and Rotorua history facts!
He also did not leave until he had all the details of my next bus ride, and made sure I was aware of what exactly was happening.
The next driver was very organised and timely. When we arrived at Hobbiton, he walked me to the ticket counter to make sure there was no confusion with my ticket.
I took the Hobbiton to Rotorua ride home and the driver was absolutely hilarious.
I had a great time with Headfirst and was very comfortable the whole time -- which is GREAT because I am a young girl traveling alone!!!
Would definitely book with Headfirst again.

Headfirst were excellent on the organisation of this day, fitting in a pick up from Rotorua, the 5 hours needed for the Black Abyss tour, getting us from Waitomo to Hobbiton, and then getting us back in Rotorua before 7pm!

The Black Abyss tour was absolutely amazing, and the team there were fantastic - there were only four of us on the tour which was a treat, as we zoomed through and got to see a lot more than we would otherwise. They also gave us little treats throughout the trip which was awesome, as you are down there for a long time and it can be quite strenuous (mainly because the water is really cold!) Hobbiton was so cool as well, and highly recommended even if you don't like LOTR.

The only thing I'd note is that because of how tightly schedule it is, if you like taking time to buy souvenirs or the like, you're probably going to have a bit of trouble as we were shuffled around very quickly from place to place (understandably, otherwise you wouldn't get back until really late).

On the whole, a fantastic experience that I will never forget and treasure for many years to come.

Kia Ora! Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We love hearing from our customers especially when they have enjoyed their day as much as you did. The Black Abyss and hobbiton is definitely one of our more tightly scheduled tours, but as you say, it is well worth it for the (for many) once in a life time experience. Many thanks and warm regards from the Headfirst Travel Team. Kind Regards, Sylvie

Many Thanks for the review! We offer a variety of add-ons on our tours. Our most popular trip is the Two Cave and Hobbiton Trip. We provide customers with the option to upgrade on the day if only One Cave has been booked. This is a great opportunity to see the diversity between both caves. Both caves are both very different and unique! Hobbiton is definitely a must-see!
