About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- hugh3320 contributionsStrongly recommend the Te Ra daytime guided tour and cultural showWe can thoroughly recommend the Te Puia daytime guided tour and cultural show combo. It was a brilliant, unique experience and worth every penny: informative, professional, sincere, totally not cheesy, fun and not a little emotional. Our excellent guide Ms Takanahi thoroughly contributed to each of these attributes, as did the staff of the national school of Māori arts and crafts who freely broke away from their important work to provide deeper context. The cultural show was outstanding. Once observed, we can understand why it is so important to promote the Māori culture and to sustain the kiwi birds' population. Thank you to all at Te Puia for a completely worthwhile day.Written 20 March 2025
- Explorer4025850 contributionsA proud Maori guideWe have been a few times, this was the best because of our guide Mikaere. His knowledge was good but he gave more it came from him he was not just taking tourists round telling them what he had told 100s before. This was his culture and he was proud of it Thank youWritten 14 March 2025
- connyp5610 contributionsWorthwhile day trip excursion from cruise shipWe very much enjoyed the different facets of this interesting tour. Our tour guide, "Mr. T" was funny, chatty, and informative. The tour includes visiting a Maori art school where artists were working on their crafts, a short walk through a modest wildlife sanctuary with kiwis, a further walk on paved paths to see thermal features, a scrumptious lunch, and Maori presentation of some of their ceremonies and rituals before the inevitable exit through the gift shop.Written 13 March 2025
- gretchenm9810 contributionsTe PuiaWe enjoyed the guided tour around the geothermal area, as well as the musical performance and haka. The culture is so fascinating and the area is gorgeous. The staff were all kind and welcoming as well as very knowledgeable. We explored the other trails on our own and liked to get away from the crowds. You don't want to miss this stop in Rotorua!Written 5 March 2025
- Road527334174620 contributionsWell guided tour of geothermal activity and Māori culture and artworks.Great experience and well narrated by our guide. We enjoyed the Māori cultural aspects of the tour. Interesting to see the art work being created.Written 2 March 2025
- AshokM7260 contributionsOver hyped placeOur evening on Saturday, 01/02/2025 was spent in Te Puia. In Te Puia’s Whakarewarewa Valley, there are bubbling mud pools and the 30m-tall Pohutu Geyser, which erupts many times daily. It’s also home to a living Maori village. There was a Show on Maori culture in Te Puia. The hot water geysers were a sight to behold. The tour included a dinner 🍽 which was no great shakes. Nothing in the dinner was served hot.Written 2 March 2025
- LJGPGP0 contributionsNice site with 3 points of interestExcellent orientation tour to the kiwi birds, art school, geysers and location, then ample time to explore on your own. Would have loved more Maori art and culture education - lots imparted by the guide and there was some signage to guide self-learning but larger, diverse groups made it more of an orientation tour. We had 2 large groups going thru at the same time. As we wandered back thru a second time to take photos / look more closely at artwork we overheard later groups that were spending more time at stops and getting much more in-depth information. It was also raining in fairness and guide was trying to keep folks from getting soaked but it felt then rushed. Very large restaurant and gift shop. Easy to find. Lots of parking but we also saw people walking over from town. Would make an excellent school trip.Written 28 February 2025
- ambermN3562BB0 contributionsEducational walkThe guided tour was educational and we spent more time in the education center than looking at the gyser. Overall, it was a good experience, but if you have a car and are short on time, visit the other nearby parks.Written 28 February 2025
- suedela0 contributionsFabulous evening of great food and entertainment whilst learning about maori cultureWe had an evening meal and maori show and it was very good. The meal was a buffet and included food cooked in the maori underground oven (hangi?) as well as a vast array of other dishes. The shower started with the formal welcome ceremony and once we were inside we were treated to traditional maori singing and dancing as well as the famous haka. Well worth a visit particularly as all funds raised go towards the education of young Maori to keep their culture alive.Written 28 February 2025
- houstonbrenda0 contributionsExcellent and informativeOur guide was a native Māori. Because of her I fell in love with the people and their culture. The lands are beautiful. Their geysers are natural. Words can’t express itWritten 26 February 2025
- michaelgN7321KG0 contributionsReview of Pe Puia - Te Po ComboThe experience was fantastic! I did the Te Puia - Te Po combo. The walk of the geysers was fantastic, and the wood carving shop was very interesting. The buffet was delicious, and the performance was spectacular. Lots of other things to do, such as viewing the Kiwis, we're included in this parrtuliar tour. However, the guide John went above and beyond to ensure I had a great experience. Highly recommend!Written 24 February 2025
- 159trudiec0 contributionsA not to be missed experienceApart from the smell, this is a great place to visit. The guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. He was happy to talk and answer any question. It's educational and there's a lot to see. You can visit everywhere on your own as well as doing a tour. The Kiwi's were cute.Written 21 February 2025
- Jenny M0 contributionsAwesome cultural experienceGreat institute to learn about Maori culture. Neat to see the crafts and how they are made. We watched the Haka performance and that was awesome. The cafe has many options for food. The gift shop is well stocked. The geysers were neat to see in action.Written 17 February 2025
- Penny M0 contributionsFantastic exposure to Māori culture.Wonderful exposure to Māori culture. We booked the Te Po Combo, which included a tour of the kiwi conservation center, the Māori arts institute, the geyser, a dinner. Fantastic!Written 17 February 2025
- 510nicoleo0 contributionsLoved learning about Maori cultureWe did the Te Puia: Te Po - Indigenous Evening Experience with Hangi Dinner Buffet and it was hands down one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip. We absolutely loved the food - there were so many vegetarian options! - and learning more about the Maori culture from the Maori people was such an enlightening experience. Be respectful when you go and follow the instructions and I'm sure you will love it as much as we did. The geyser at the end with the sunset in the background was a beautiful bonus.Written 17 February 2025

My wife and I were touring New Zealand, on a 15-day tour arranged through Travelmarvel by APT, in a group of around 40 people. The visit to Te Puia was arranged in advance as part of the tour, so I have no idea how much the various packages cost. Our itinerary included a visit to the geysers, a Maori cultural evening and a Hangi buffet dinner, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. Everything was efficiently run and we had plenty of time to explore the geothermal valley, including an opportunity to return to the geysers after we watched the show, had our meal and the sun had set. I will upload photos along with this review, but it is something I would highly recommend if you are visiting Rotorua.

Enjoyed a wonderful buffet dinner where I got to try many new and tasty foods. We then went to the cultural experience/show which had talented warriors and maidens who danced and sang. Finally finished the night seeing the geyser put on a show.

Was wonderful to hear and see the Maori culture. They have a shop which even if you do not want to buy anything one must go to see the artifacts. There is a guided tour of students learning how to make the maori artifacts. a cutural show is put up for the guest where at the end the guest are invited to learn some of their dance forms.
Take a walk to the Geysers (see separate review of the same)
Do not miss the Kiwi conservation center. They have some kiwi in there and it maybe one opportunity to see a live Kiwi bird.
There is a gift shop from where you can buy the mud products. After going around NZ , I realised this was the best shop to buy the stuff from as it is most reasonabily priced

stunning geothermal activity in a beautiful setting. Lovely walk ways, set so you can safley get up close to to teh activity. Helpful knowledgeable local guides. food is a little pricey for what you get in the onsite cafe and servcie was slow at the till, but it didnt detract from a great exeprience. Well worth the visit

The cultural performance was a great way to experience Maori culture, it was entertaining watching people having a go at the poi and the haka and the performances were beautiful. The only downside was that they are jamming so many people in for the cultural show that you are practically sat in each others laps. The hangi was delicious and certainly not stingy with the quantity of food. Although the geyser didn't go off while we were there it was nice to sit on the warm rocks with a hot drink and listen to the stories.

This is an education tourist site on the grounds of a Maori school. The program is well presented and fun with audience participation for Maori dancing. The guides were sincere about wanting to share their culture and traditions. Although, buffet dinners are not our favorite type of dining, the Maori feast was fresh food, delicious and well organized. The geyser viewing is included and worth the time. The New Zealand people we met were amazingly kind and friendly.

I recommend taking the tour so that the Maori guide can give you a good explanation of the trade school and what they're learning from their own history and modernizing the crafts. There are also geysers and hot pools that frequently erupt, and a chance to see a kiwi bird in the breeding program. The geysers aren't on the scale of Yellowstone, and the Cultural Performance isn't on the scale you would see at a luau in Hawaii, but you would never be able to merge those experiences anywhere else but here. The buffet after the show was pretty good, too.

This tour was not only professionally run, but was a lot of fun. From the pickup at our hotel, our driver was engaging. I loved learning about the Maori culture & watching the traditional rituals, dance & song. The show was interactive with the brave getting up on stage to learn a dance (for the women) & for the men, the Hakka. The food, prepared in the ground in traditional Maori style, was delicious & plentiful. The geyser actually went off during dinner, so we got a show from a distance. We still went down to explore with our hot chocolate & sat on naturally warmed rocks in the hope it would go off again at closer proximity, but it didn’t. Can’t control Mother Nature. Our guide kept us entertained with more stories from her village. We met some great people & overall enjoyed the evening. I highly recommend this tour.

Kia ora,
Sounds like you had an enjoyable night with The Te Po combo experience, our guided tours are very informative and I would recommend this for someone who doesn’t know much about Rotorua and Te Puia we have very informative tours about the culture and heritage of Rotorua and the tribes that occupied the lands to this very day.
With the buffet being a cherry on the top of the cake and seeing the Pohutu geyser erupt at night under a set of lights is absolutely stunning.
Thank you for your awesome review and we hope to see you again sometime soon.

I only gave this 3 stars because it was not my "cup of "tea" but it appeared that the other (mainly seniors) really liked it. Very touristy, crowded. Never saw the kiwi birds- maybe we just missed them on our tour of the grounds. The show was ok, pretty much what you'd expect. The dinner, however, was excellent. Huge variety of food in addition to the Hangi dishes. There are several outfits in Rotorua that offer this type of cultural experience and I think this is one of the better ones (the geyser was quite spectacular) - it's just whether this kind of activity (and they are not cheap) is your thing.

This seems like a must do if you're in Rotorua. Similar to a Hawaiian Luau experience. A bit touristy, but still worth going. Buffet is large w/ loads of choices. The show is entertaining and interesting, although short (1/2 hour). Try to book the ticket where you get to stay on the property after the show and see the hot springs and geyser erupt. That could be the best part of the evening.

How do we book the combo package ( day and night) through trip advisor and are the hotel pickups and extra cost?On the Te Puia site it is $150.00 NZ dollars but I did not see anything about free cancellation.
Written 1 September 2019
I booked the night only package through tripadvisor and the pick-up (to-and-fro accommodation) was included in the fee. You can book the package via tripadvisor’s website (just select the date you want) and you’ll be sent to pay + sent a confirmation email.
As for free cancellation, you can cancel via tripadvisor but only within a certain timeframe. You will be notified on which dates you can cancel for free - so be sure to cancel before the set date if you need to.
Regardless, it’s best for you to check with Te Puia as I went a few months back - unsure if the policies have changed since then.
