If you are after the best photo of inferno crater the best time (we went Apr 3) would be mid to late afternoon when the crater is more likely to be in full sun. Even at midday it was still mostly shaded by the cliffs. My guess is that late Dec would be the best time of year as

We (two adults and kids aged 11 and 9) walked the full walk and then went on the boat ride. It was fantastic, the walk was spectacular and the boat ride was interesting and informative. Was a reasonable price too. Loved the experience.
