A really pleasant walk for an hour plus down to Lake Rotomahana. You can make it longer or shorter depending on your desire to walk longer and further as there are additional tracks on offer. The self-guided part means you can do it at your own pace though you will want to keep an eye on the clock to get a sailing on the lake at a time that suits you. There could be a little more maintenance work done cutting back vegetation at viewing points in the early part of the walk but otherwise it’s well maintained and a very easy, mostly downhill, walk. The boat ride added so much again to viewing the volcanic activity in the area and I would recommend that you sit outside at the back for the best viewing position. That was certainly the view of the US tour guide who had her group queue in front of us (we were already there waiting for the boats arrival) and then pushed their way on first. There was a ranger bloke with them and he allowed this to happen which we and others waiting felt was very unfair. Notwithstanding this, it was a very good walk and cruise, I’d highly recommend it.

We didn't expect the experience that we got. Superb value for money, loved the long walk down through the valley past the different art on display and seeing all the scenery, craters and bubbling pools. Amazing nature and landscapes, thoroughly enjoyed it and the knowledgable bus driver that picked us up at the bottom was excellent. Can totally recommend it.

From a teenager (many years ago), Waimangu stuck in my mind as the best attraction even. Fast forward more than 40 years, nothing has changed. New Zealand in lockdown Waimangu was open to the few local tourists that came through - the team were engaging and helpful.
It hasn't changed for my early memories, fantastic scenery and history. The added bonus is the cruise on Lake Rotomahana and the history it brings of the Tarawera eruption and the tragic loss of the Pink and White Terraces.
The walk to the Lake takes roughly 2 hours, the cruise times are regular and when you get back a bus will depart shortly afterwards if you aren't keen on the walk back.
Incredible scenery and a must do when visiting Rotorua.

We did the walk down the valley, the boat trip and the free bus back up to the entrance. It was very very interesting. The self-guide part, meant you could go at your own pace.
We went a couple of days ahead of school holidays and so were able to stop at each point of interest by ourselves, stop, read a bit of blurb, admire the feature, take photos and then sometimes be joined by someone else or another family.

I don't normally do boats, but since it was a lake, no surf, I managed it and would recommend it to other non-boaters as well. You get to see a geyser that way. My tip would be to ride up in the cabin with the captain for the best view, and the best source of information.

great to have bus stops on the walking route, as well but we didn't need them. Very friendly staff.

While we were blessed with lovely weather, I imagine so long as the weather was clear Waimangu would be stunning.

I am nowhere near eloquent enough to describe the raw beauty of this amazing place. It is a stroll through unspoiled, natural beautiful native forest with hot water springs, erupting geysers, and steaming streams.

The Mt Haszard hiking trail is well worth the effort if you are have reasonable fitness, sturdy footwear and the additional time available.

The boat trip around the lake is also well worth doing for both the scenery and the informative narration provided by the boat skipper.

Enough to say, if you are fortunate enough to get the chance to visit, you will not be disappointed.

Beautiful, serene location that we were able to explore at our own pace. The boat trip on Lake Rotomahana was outstanding - thanks to the skipper who gave such an in-depth and informative commentary of the landmarks and history of the area.
I thoroughly enjoyed being a tourist in my own country today and highly recommend this fantastic location.

Waimangu Valley is one of our favourite volcanic attractions in the Rotorua area and we have visited several times.
We always walk down the valley to the lake, and walk back up to the entrance, though they do run a bus service if you don't want to walk both ways. There is also a cruise on Lake Rotomahana you can do, which we did not do this visit, though we have done it in the past.
We like this valley for the variety of thermal activity, and the fact we get a decent walk.
There was some great artwork to be seen along the way this visit - from an outdoor art trail competition they ran 2020/2021.
Worth a visit, and revisit.

We did both the walk and the boat ride. We could see so much in both. The geothermal activity was amazing especially inferno crater. The reopening special price made it a great activity for the price.

I did the full walk with boat ride. The initial walk takes about an hour and a half, if you do it slowly, and you basically walk a trail and read from a piece of paper about the sights on the way. You can arrive very early before all the tourists come which i did - and had the place to myself for a bit! There is a longer track uphill which i didn't do as it stated that you needed 50 minutes to complete it. The boat ride was relaxing, but could easily be left out. I would have given the experience 5 stars, but the cafe experience wasn't good. I asked whether there was onion in the wraps and the staff replied "possibly". I have several food intolerances and after her uncertain reply, didn't feel safe that they'd know what was in all the food. They should have access to ingredients lists so they can give proper answers and so people with food intolerances can safely eat there. After such a long walk i really wanted something to eat. Instead, i had to drive all the way into the city to find a place where they knew the ingredients in their food. Was a real downer after the walk.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your experience. Firstly, please accept our apologies around the uncertain reply you received from one of our staff members when asking about ingredient lists. Rest assured our team are generally well trained and well versed with ingredient lists. A little bit of investigation at our end indicates that the staff member in question on this occasion needed a reminder about how to deal with questions like yours. Sorry that you ended up having to head back to the city for something to eat. Secondly, seems like your experience of the walk was good and we appreciate having had you come through for a visit. Hopefully we might see you back again some time in the future - rest assured your dietary requirements will be better met if you were to visit again.

Taking the Waimangu self guided walking tour was a very pleasant surprise. First of all you start your walk at the top of the valley and walk downhill virtually all the way - except for a few of the short side viewpoints. At the bottom or at a couple of pickup points the bus whisks you back up to the top and you've seen this gem in less than 3 hours.

The scenery is outstanding. It's amazing there is so much thermal activity in this small area. They've done a great job getting us up close to this amazing geo wonderland.
