About
The story of the migration of Tamatekapua of the Te Arawa canoe to Aotearoa and the Maori Pacifica connection told in dance form. Come and join us in this Maori and Island fusion extravaganza, including a feast for the ravenous. Your hāngī/umu earth oven food of Polynesia includes pork, chicken, taro, island style potato salad, and much more. The hangi/umu is cooked in an earth-oven, a hole 1-2m into the ground, the baskets of kai (food) are placed on hot stones at the bottom of a hāngī pit. The kai is then covered to trap the heat, the steam and heat from heated hāngī stones infuses the kai with delicious earthy flavours while it cooks for 3-4 hours. Come and try out the delicious tempting hula food of the Great Ocean of Kiwa

Appallingly
Having had 10 days in rotarua with new zealanders it was extremely disappointing to attend this cultural event . It had absolutely no indication of indigenous morai. The price was extremely high and hardly worth the experience. The food was less then impressive and the show was less then authentic. Several people walked out before the second half of the show. Never again.

Wow, what an experience
Jun 2021
Such an amazing experience, it exceeded all expectations and it was truly immersive. It was great learning about the Maori culture through the guided walk around the village, seeing how the hangi was prepared and through song and dance . The hangi was delicious, the performances were fantastic, the hosts were entertaining.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to NZ. Would highly recommend.

Amazing performance!
AMAZING!! It was a brilliant performance and the guide was very knowledgeable and funny! The performers were on spot! It was amazing to discover a part of their culture!! We would recommend it to everyone!
Of course it is for tourists! One who would think otherwise... don’t do it 😉
It’s worth the time and price!

Fabulous Mitai Evening
Feb 2020
We knew the evening would be good but it exceeded all our expectations. From the introduction from Tom who was so funny and really made the evening, especially as he spoke so many languages, to the warriors in their canoes, the cultural show was fabulous, the hangi meal which was delicious and finally seeing the glow worms, which made a perfect evening.
The Buggy ride was good too and an experience especially as we only booked it as we wanted to go to the evening event and could not find that on it’s own. Esther was a great buggy driver and very informative about Maori culture.

Awesome cultural performance
Dec 2019 • Family
We attended the Mitai Hangi and Cultural performance as a family. We were transported to and from our hotel by a very friendly driver who kicked off the night with some lessons in Maori language. The cultural performances were excellent and the definite highlight of the evening. We were disappointed that we didn’t get to see where the hangi was cooked and the unveiling of the feast. The food that was cooked in the ground was lovely, however the accompanying sides did not fit in with the theme of the evening. Also would have enjoyed having more time to look and learn about the replica Mouri village. It felt very rushed through this part of the night, as there were more people behind waiting to get through. There seemed to be too many people at the same time on the tour. The evening was enjoyable enough, however it felt very rushed. The staff were friendly and very funny.

Mitai was AMAZING
Dec 2019 • Business
Kia Ora,

Wow had to come on here and give a big MIHARO review for the attraction and team at Mitai.

I took a group of 10 in for the Cultural Experience, as I’m a Tour Guide for Auckland & Beyond Tours. All I can say Team the Kai was amazing, Hospitality and Venue A++.

Big ups for the Kapa Roopu they were amazing, from start to end the show was delivered with passion. I have been to many other cultural shows and I can say they look like paid performers where the performers @ Mitai delivered Matatini styles 😍.

Nga Mihi Kia koutou ❤️🖤

Awesome Evening for the whole family,
Oct 2019 • Family
We had the Mitai i bus pick us up from our motel and take us to the village, we saw the performance, had dinner there -Hangi and saw the glow worms on our guided bushwalk. The dinner was great and Miss 10 (fussy) had plenty to eat too. There was lots of educational talks and the singing, wow. Would highly recommend Mitai Village for a professional, family friendly experience.

Great cultural evening
Sep 2019 • Friends
Spent a great evening at this place. The arrival of the warriors in their waka was good as was the cultural performance. Lots of singing, dancing and information although it is not the best version of The Huka that I have seen. The hangi food was very good and plenty of it even with the 2 tables of hungry farmers who got there first. The tour to the springs after the dinner was great with a very informative, knowledgeable guide.

Informative but needs to be refreshed
Enjoyed the evening with cultural education, dance and evening walk in the bush to see a few glow worms. The staff/ entertainers seemed tired and bored. The dialog appeared memorized and stiff. Tons of information about Maori culture was provided. Plenty of food.
