This was a fantastic team building activity for our students visiting on a school trip from Te Wai Pounamu. The mountain is so different to anything we have in the South Island so both getting to the top and running down the scree were highlights for us.
Jackie has some skills at 4WD a bus up the maunga and Harry even accompanied one from our group (down the asile) to get everyone back safely. We had such a great experience that will stay with us, we highly recommend this, especially to other kura.

This is a wonderful hike through on a beautiful mountain/inactive volcano. The scenery is stunning and it changes constantly. Be aware that there are some steep trails up and down on loose stone in some sections. You need to be steady on your feet. The ride in the bus up to the hiking is very bouncy - I would not recommend it if you get car-sick easily. Our guides were excellent and they taught us about the physical and spiritual aspects of what we were seeing. I would highly recommend this tour!

Had wonderful guided hike experience on Tarawera with Dan. The road in was an exciting experience in its own right in the 4-wheel drive bus, but this was surpassed by the mountain hike and views from the summit. Particularly enjoyed the scree sliding down into the crater, but my wife spent more time on her rear and was less enthusiastic about this part of the hike. Also greatly enjoyed Dan's recounting of Maori legends, particularly how Mt. Putauaki (Edgecumbe) became stranded between Whakaari (White Island) and Tarawera. We highly recommend this experience and the only down side was our failure to see one of the local Wallaby population that lives on Tarawera.

We were a group of 18 active Seniors, so all 70's plus.......(see U3A)

For some of us it was a 'bucket list 'walk, but I quickly discovered you can look at Google Earth and imagine what walking the craters of Mt. Tarawera is like but it is not the same as actually doing it.
Our hosts were Dan and Jackie, and it was having them with us that really made this walk the success it was. Everything worked like clockwork, due to their knowledge, experience and friendly professional attitude.

We would recommend this walk to all New Zealanders who want to do and see something different. Thank you Kaitiaki Adventures and thank you Dan and Jackie.

Did this today with my two sons aged 7 and 10. Weather was less than ideal with rain and low visibility but we were clearly advised of this at pickup and given options if we did not want to proceed. Very glad we did though as we still had a great time. A couple of portions of the track were steep but totally manageable and the kids loved coming down the scree slope. Ben our guide was excellent or in my boys words - “Awesome!’ Very knowledgeable and kept us entertained with traditional Maori stories of the mountain and surrounding area. While it is not a cheap outing I felt we got great value for money for such a unique and personal experience. Highly recommended!

I found the walk over the volcano was comparable with the Tongariro Crossing but shorter and minus the Emerald Lakes. A sense of the alien and it was all beautiful. The landscape was one hundred percent volcanic with red, black and white colours. Another huge plus was the views on all sides; several lakes and the coast with islands to the east, plus the mountains of the central plateau.

Our guides Ben and Frank were excellent. They looked after our safety and informed us about the history, the geology and the legendry of the area.

I am recommending this trip to all my friends.

What an incredible exeperience!!! We had Dan as our guide and he was AWESOME!!! This trip exceeded our expectations and we had high expectations for the trip. Dan was incredible with our kids, really passionate about mount Tarawera, clearly loves his role, very knowledgeable. Dan really was an incredible guide, a real asset to the team. The walk was a really good pace and what a privilage to be able to be on and in the mountian.
This trip is highly recommended, as a family we really loved the experience and the kids enjoyed it as much as my husband and I did.

A MUST do!!!! From pick up to drop off the guides, Dan, Hemi and Jordy were welcoming, informative, friendly and simply amazing! Dan's knowledge was in-depth and insightful and took the experience to a another level. Hemi was easy going, personable and related well to our entire group. He went above, beyond and below retrieving a wind blown cap. Jordy, despite being only three weeks on the job, did a great job supporting and contributing to the overall experience and like Hemi put himself out to retrieve misplaced belongings.

This hike is demanding, requiring a level of physical fitness but well worth the experience. Forget about the helicopter , there is a sense of achievement and exhilaration and well earned fatigue from getting up close and personal with the maunga; the views , the camaraderie that you won't get from an easy ride. The guide was well informed and very supportive. If you are retired do it. We are 71 and 70 respectively.

Kia Ora, Thank you for your review. It does take some physical requirement to do it and with a little bit of courage to get it done it is always worth it. We are so glad you enjoyed yourself hiking up Mt Tarawera whilst with our guides and achieveing to concur the maunga and get up close and personal. We wish you all the best in the future. having read the reviews, my husband and I were really looking forward to the hike. We are in our early 70's and are avid hikers, but we were unable to complete this hike. There needs to be a clearly statement about the difficulty of this hike for some people. The rest of our group appeared to be in their 20's and 30's, and they loved the experience. Kyle was very accommodating and stayed with us while the others completed the hike. He provided a lot of great information about the area. Also, the ride up was VERY bumpy.

Kia Ora Susan! Thank you for your review, as a company we pride ourselves on being as inclusive as possible at all times. As you did experience we do offer different options to all manuhiri (visitors) depending on their ability to complete the different options offered. The 4WD journey up Mt Tarawera (inevitably a little bumpy) to the craters edge offers spectacular views regardless of which hike or non-hike option is chosen. Our guides are always there to accommodate and provide information and amazing stories through-out your journey. We have added more information on these different options through-out the booking process including the fly/drive option (Heli to the top and walk down) to continually to improve the experience offered. Wishing you safe travels in the future, Nga Mihi, Kaitiaki Adventures
