About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 869justiny0 contributionsDon’t expect return service to your hotel- you’ll be dumped at the downtown terminal at dusk to find your wayThe coach was nice, the guide was engaged. Don’t depend on the WiFi, it was dial up speeds the entire journey. We enjoyed the caves and Hobbit Town. The deal breaker was we were not dropped off at our hotel (pickup/ drop off selected during booking) It was not a great experience walking from the downtown terminal to our hotel at dusk. These tour prices are much higher than competitor, one would assume top notch service.Written 7 March 2025

- Flyer041113595130 contributionsCOULD NOT BE WORSE SERVICEWe’ve been traveling for 42 days now coming from Canada visiting several countries arriving in Auckland NZ, on December 30. We have never in our travels thus far experienced anyone so rude and confrontational as the Intercity/Great Sights bus driver named Kevin. From the start of our pickup service in Greymouth NZ until our finish (drop off and quarter mile walk to our hotel) in Franz Josef NZ, Kevin demonstrated a sour attitude towards us and other passengers. In handling our luggage, he just tossed it into the luggage compartment of the bus with total disregard for the fragile contents inside. When we stopped for our one hour stop, he was not helpful in answering questions of passengers other than to say be back at this bus by 3:08 PM. On arrival in Franz Josef, Kevin did not ask the passengers for their hotel drop off locations. We stayed on the bus until he dropped most of the passengers off at which time we asked him when would we be dropped off at the Franz Josef Glasier Hotel. He said “I am not turning this bus around just to drop you off. You will have to get off here and walk to your hotel” and pointed out a blue sign in the trees about a quarter mile down the road. So, he unloaded our two big suitcases and a carryon roller case along with our knapsack and my elderly wife and I made our way on foot to our hotel. Thankfully our hotel staff assisted us to our room with our luggage. Our first terrible and troubling experience in our 42 day trip thus far. This is our first experience with InterCity/Great Sights and we really hope you employ better staff than the person named Kevin who performed your services for us today. Please feel free to contact us should you wish to speak directly with us.Written 4 January 2025

They are gone leaving us from another pick up spot! We already email and message to GreatSight staff but no reply. I tried to reschedule it, but they say it couldnt because fully booked in another date. And now, I went to New Zealand without going to waitomo and hobiton cave. Thx GreatSight for your sadly experience.Written 28 December 2024
- msm19690 contributionsHighly recommend well organized tour company from Auckland to Rotorua, hassle free with no driving.Excellent day tour in a big comfortable coach from Auckland covering both Waitomo glowworm caves and Hobbiton. And we got dropped off at Rotorua. Super well organized. Pickup was convenient from like 2 min walk from our hotels. We didn’t have to worry about transport, lunch was provided, entrance was taken care off, and the drivers were good people and gave interesting tour commentary. Both these attractions are a must do. And if you are going one way to Rotorua, we looked around but only found GreatSights to offer this option. Highly recommend.Written 22 December 2024
- Rocktoreef880 contributionsGood sights but not with the crowdsI am a bit conflicted about what star rating to give because the places we went were absolutely amazing but the bus experience was very average. We booked a Great Sights tour to go to Waitomo caves and Hobbiton. Both experiences was truly incredible. What let everything down is the amount of people we were with. It was very impersonable and we were loaded onto this big coach and hit the road. I have to say, our driver was exceptional and I enjoyed listening to his commentary. Unfortunately, it is a very long time to be sitting in a coach to get to the first stop and they give you one tiny cookie for the drive. A bit of morning tea would have been very welcome. At the caves, the group was far too big to be walking easily through the caves and everyone having a good view. I think we were like 45 people and that is far too many for such an experience. They had to load us in two boats to see the glow worms and of course you have people that do not listen and are still wearing there smart watches and not covering up the light they admit so that is a tad annoying for large groups. After that experience, it was back on the bus for some lunch and the next stop. Unfortunately, lunch was minuscule consisting of a half sandwich and salad. I was actually very hungry when we finally got to Hobbiton and so were a lot of people that you end up spending money at the cafe there just for food. The hobbiton experience was great and the guide very knowledgeable but again, being a large group, it is hard to hear some times, especially because the guide microphone doesn't work on the coach and the guide had to take photos of every single person at one point and hurry people along at others. By the time you arrive back in Auckland it is like 7.30pm, a very very long day and long breaks in between food. There could have been a small chip packet or something on the drive back. I would return to both the destinations again but I would not go on this coach again. The lack of food and the crowd are deal breakers for me. We still had a good day and thank you to the driver for dealing with road works and the long hours and giving us commentary, I really appreciate it.Written 1 December 2024
- erinmallison0 contributionsWonderful ExpereinceThe Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton were great. Well worth the money. The tour guide Rachel was awesome!! Great commentary on the way to both locations. Very informative and funny. My only feedback is that the bus tray tables were a little dirty. They could use a good wipe down in between tours. Otherwise, fantastic trip!!Written 28 November 2024

- gracekL5675PO0 contributionsGreat TourBooked this tour to help cut down on the planning side of visiting Hobbiton, and it worked out great! The bus left on time and early in the morning, so we had to skip breakfast. Would recommend bringing a snack along. Our driver was great and let us sleep all the way down, and helped us figure out where to go when we got to Hobbiton. The tour through Hobbiton moves quite quickly, so if you are in a large group--like ours was--it can be hard to get pictures in places or listen to the tour guide at every stop. Weather was great and going in to the hobbit hole was lots of fun. Lunch was well made and solid fare, if a bit on the bland side. The apple crumble was delicious. They run the buffet well so that there is no waiting in line forever and you have time to eat. The only drawback is there is very little time to actually look at the gift shop. We had a bit of time in the morning, but I didn't look too much at it since I thought we would have time in the afternoon. After the tour and lunch we only had about twenty minutes to visit the toilet, get drinks/water from the cafe, and visit the gift shop. It was quite rushed!Written 5 October 2024

I can't say enough good things about Great Sights. I booked their tour through a third-party company, and a website glitch scheduled me for the wrong day. When I immediately called that company, they said they had no record of my booking, and I later learned that they had transferred my reservation to yet another third-party company. In desperation, I called GreatSights, and they kindly changed my booking to the correct day.
In the future, I will always book directly with GreatSights. The few dollars I saved with a third-party company weren't worth the resulting frustrations, and GreatSights' helpfulness has made me a customer for life.
The tour was great, too! The very nice driver, Nata, picked me up at my hotel and shared good information with the passengers as we drove to Hobbiton. Hobbiton was beautiful and interesting, and the Green Dragon lunch, for which my expectations had been modest, was very good.
I took the early morning tour, and if that experience was typical, I recommend it. Arriving early, we had a small group walking with our guide, which meant everyone could hear her and ask questions.
This trip was a highlight of my visit to the North Island, partly because Hobbiton is a terrific site, and partly because GreatSights handled everything so well.

The experience was amazing !
From the moment we set off from Rotorua to Hobbiton, the driver made us feel at ease. We laughed a lot and he explained a lot about the town and the surrounding area.
When we got there, we were immediately immersed in the atmosphere with the cafeteria and the shop.
The guided tour of the place was really interesting, and we learnt a lot about the films and the shooting. There's plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take lots of photos and observe the set in detail.
The meal was very good and varied, giving us lots of time to eat and chat before heading back on the bus.
Whether or not you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, this is a must-see. The scenery and landscapes are stunning !
Thank you for this day !

I really enjoyed the day at Hobbiton and enjoyed the tour guide providing us with various interesting facts about New Zealand on our drive over.
The only piece of feedback I would provide is that there should be a better notification system to let people know if the driver will be late or if there will be delays with regards to the pick-up. I booked this tour a couple months before and I didn't receive any emails, from the company, the day of, confirming that the trip would still be happening. The driver was late at no fault of his own, due to traffic, but because I didn't receive any emails from the company, I had no idea if the tour was still running as scheduled and had to call them several times to get confirmation.
Other than this issue, I enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to others!

have terrible experienced with Great sights booked Hobbiton Day Tour their website says pick up & drop off from your hotel which is misleading called them a day before asking if they can pick us up from our hotel the staff say no, we have to go to Sky City terminal.
Their website does not says if the tour you booked is One way or return which is usually tours supposed to be pick up & drop off . note there is no public transport going back to Auckland CBD you will be stranded . when we arrived at the Hobbiton the driver advise us that we have to find our own ride going way back to Auckland and he will no longer take us to Rotorua it seems like they over booked because people are fighting over the seats .
The driver is kind enough to asked other tour drivers who have available seat who can accomodate us. we so lucky & thankful that Cheeky Kiwi have a good heart who offer us a ride going back Auckland for free . the driver Simon so kind and lovely drop us off safely in Auckland CBD which we requested .
Hobbiton was amazing but we did not enjoy it at all as we are so distracted , worried and having anxiety thinking how are we gonna get home . I am so furious with Great sights just ruin our supposed to be exciting Hobbiton tour. the worse holiday experienced .

Kia Ora,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review of the trip and the experiences you encountered. We do offer hotel pick-up from 5 different hotels in Auckland which are spread out around the city to provide people with options. In your instance, your hotel was closer to the coach terminal than another hotel to pick you up from. Regarding your booking, it was for an Auckland to Hobbiton with a finish in Rotorua rather than Auckland. This is the reason that we didn't have availably on our coach to bring you back to Auckland and organized for you to travel back with another operator to ensure you got back to Auckland. It is unfortunate this happened during your holiday and took away your excitement about visiting Hobbiton. Please feel free to contact me directly as I would like the opportunity to discuss this matter with you directly.
Regards
Mike

We were up early to get our coach from hotel in Rotorua, our tour guide was waiting with us. Our coach from Great Sights never turned up! Our tour guide was told that the trip was cancelled on 1st March but he wasn’t informed of that fact, we were booked to go on 3rd March.
Wish I could give no marks, as this coach company not worth booking, and heard of other people being disappointed with them.
Was really angry that the coach company cancelled our booking without our and tour guides knowledge, so never got to Hobbiton!

We went with a tour group because we wanted to have lunch there… but the tour had 48 people on it..we couldn’t hear the guide and they were pushing us through really quickly..only 10 minutes in the green dragon is not enough time to get your drink and enjoy it! But the lunch buffet was fantastic but only 20 mins to eat!! Again we felt rushed!! 10 mins to shop & use the bathroom then on the bus back home! Way tooo RUSHED no time to enjoy the walk & the Hobbit holes..but all in all a beautiful & magical place!

Once in a Lifetime experience for everyone who loves The Hobbit/LotR. And exciting for every agegroup. It was great to see how every visitor (especially adults) was looking for a place to hide - because no one wanted to leave after the official tour 🫣 We were lucky to see one of the recently opened Hobbit Wholes: so much love put into this work. So many details. You literally wait for Bilbo to knock at the door….

Very well organized. Because it's a long haul, it was important for us to stick to a strict schedule, and our driver did a fantastic job of keeping us informed and punctual. Lunch and snacks were a nice touch, even though I had no room in my stomach for all.
Our driver, Rachel, is a crusty old dude (though he may prefer "she/her" pronouns?) who is incredibly entertaining. He provided running commentary on the drivers around us, the various landmarks, as well as various stories about life in New Zelandia now and back in the day. Listening to him was like listening to your favorite radio talk show. That alone is worth the highest ratings for this tour. Give him a raise and keep him around!

Lana, Our tour guide was friendly helpful and clearly explained the history of Hobbiton and the making of the movies. She patiently waited as we took photos and often took photos for us. The experience was amazing to see the set. The lunch was delicious and so filling. It was a lovely gesture to give us mugs to apologise for the construction set. Our bus driver, Nutta, from Great Sights was friendly, informative and entertaining. Thank you for a superb day

We enjoyed our tour to the Waitomo Caves and Rotorua. To see all the highlights makes for a long day so therefore expect to be tired.
The gloworms in the caves and the trip on the boat are something that will never be forgotten and Rotorua is a very well kept town. The geysers are spectacular.
If you have never seen sheep shearing then this will be of interest. Seeing the haka performed by Maoris was also a highlight.
We would recommend this tour especially if you have a tight itinerary.

Hi! Can we bring along our luggages for this tour if we choose to end the tour in Rotoroa?
Written 3 September 2019
Yes. I did the return trip to Auckland, but everyone staying on in Rotorua had luggage. It was stored in a compartment underneath the bus. There was also overhead space for lighter luggage (backpacks, duffels and such) on the bus.

My sister and I will be travelling from Auckland and staying in Rotorua; we were wondering if we can leave our bags/luggage on the bus while we visit these attractions? If we can't leave our things on the bus, can we store them somewhere else? Thanks!
Written 27 July 2018
I don't remember if there was a storage area at the caves. I left my stuff on the bus & if you are on a tour you should be able to leave your stuff on the bus. I would email the Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre & ask if they have storage lockers.

I loved Rotorua better than anything else I have seen on the north Island. There is so much to do. Plus Rotorua is the heart of thermal activity. Geysers, mud pools, thermal bubbling creeks. There are some free things to do (Kiurau Park is free and has walks, mud pools, steaming creeks etc, and lots of lovely plants. If you do stay, you can go to one of the amazing thermal parks, or for day trips with a mega value small company The Real Rotorua. I went on every outing they offered lasgt trip. Auckland is a city, Rotorua is a curiosity and an adventure !
