- tbonio630 contributionsA initial sense of awe gave way to inspiring singingIncredible energy & enthusiasm from mostly young performers. If you have sensory sensitivities to sound I’d recommend bringing your loops/ear plugs, the sound really fills the space during their performance. It’s a magnificent and powerful sound. - Felipe R0 contributionsA tourist trapI was there 2 weeks ago with my family. The village is located in a beautiful forest and the people are friendly with a maori cocktail through different stations of their culture, but I felt very disappointed by how expensive it was (in money and time… 4 Hours with kids). I expected much more, because the performances were pretty similar to other Maori shows. I saw shows of the same quality at the Whaitangi Treaty Grounds in Northland. The most dissapointing part was the dinner: slow service, shared plates, very little about maori food and nothing special just western music.Written 6 January 2024

- FoodAficionadoDallas0 contributionsGreat show, food lacking in quality and quantityThe experience consists of three parts: 4 cultural presentations, 1 dance and singing show, dinner. I rate the cultural presentations at 4-5 stars, the show at emphatic 5 stars and the dinner at 2 stars. I also subtract points for value - for 260NZD per person the food was not up to that price level and it was scarce. With growing teenagers we walked away genuinely hungry. Overall it was a good experience, culturally great, but considering how much we paid, you are likely to find better value elsewhere.Written 4 January 2024

The welcoming ceremony was spectacular to watch and throughout the evening all of the family members were very friendly and generous with their words of welcome. We booked this online and we are definitely impressed with the performance , learning and the overall Māori culture and experience. We are a family with 2 teens and all of us enjoyed it so much . They also served dinner and the food is awesome. We stayed in Novotel and they will send a bus to pick us up and send us back to the hotel . To hear about and experience the Māori culture first hand is something to enjoy and savour. It was not just about listening and watching but also participating. Such fun. It was serious in parts and hilarious in others. The haka, the dancing, the hangi and being part of the Māori community for an evening was just amazing.Written 23 November 2023

I like I imagine, many others, grasped at this headline thinking it must be amazing. Wrong!. This is not even a top 100 experience.
This trip included 1 hour of some demonstrations on Maori life in a very small area of the wooded area in groups of about 20 from a total of about 200 people, then a 5 minute talk about how the food you are about to eat is cooked. Its then 90 minutes of sitting in the dinning room eating a buffet meal. Much of what we learnt about Maori culture is available elsewhere without this kind of expense. We watched a 30 min show in the National Museum in Auckland and learnt most of what we saw last night.
This is a slick operation that must be bringing in a fortune for the owners especially bearing in mind that there were two parties of 200 at the venue, revenue is $50k plus per night!. For that sort of revenue there ought to be a lot more for your money.
If you want to learn about Maori Culture, check out other options before committing to the cost of this one.

This was recommended by I-site as the best Maori cultural experience. We were greatly looking forward to it but felt, from the beginning, that we were on more of a “Butlins” type tour with a condescending bus driver who insulted our intelligence . He thought he was funny, and yes, he was in parts, but his constant talking gave us a headache before we even got there and added nothing to the experience. We were expected to say “Kia Ora” every five seconds. On arrival we were herded , four or five coaches full, into the waiting area. We had to stand here for about 15 mins, with nothing happening. The actual Maori welcome was great and, we felt, authentic. The different village experiences were rushed and we had trouble getting a good view. The singing and dancing were lovely and you could tell a lot of love and effort were being put in. The food was average, some of it being cooked underground, but I don’t think lamb, mint sauce and gravy is especially Maori! We were hurried through the meal as well, as they had to get ready for the next coach loads. Out of season, I’m sure, you’d get better value in terms of money, but also time and attention. We were told several times it was time to move on as there wasn’t enough time to answer questions or to linger. We think it’s a victim of its own success.

Online it says that the whole thing lasts about 3 hours. You don't get 3 hours of village entertainment, however. The time starts running 1 hour BEFORE the "show time" you booked (17:00/18:15/19:30), and include a 10 minute video at their offices in town ("The Gathering Place") and the transportation to the village itself. The village entertainment (welcoming ceremony, tour and activities, and 20 minute show) lasts about 1 hour in total. The last hour covers dinner, dessert, and a goodbye-performance by one of the bus drivers, on guitar. We had booked at 17:00, were picked up from the hotel at 15:45, and were home by 20:30.
So, all in all, I was disappointed by "One of the Top 10 Experiences in the World". I had been super excited for the Maori village experience, and had expected more.
However, as mentioned, what you get from the performances is great. A variety of traditional dances and modern acts featuring song and guitar play. The performers clearly enjoy themselves, and have a good laugh together.
Dinner was also ok, nothing special. Don't expect any exotic dishes, everything is heavily derived from the english, with cranberry sauce, sticky toffee pudding, and custard. There was a variety of different meats, some fish in sauce (ok), and mussels. Potates, kumara and stuffing (yum).
The vegan and veggie options were tasty, but the portion you are served is tiny, so we helped ourselves to the buffet after.
Would probably not buy the dinner package again, but rather just see some performances.
I can never get enough haka!

A fun and educational evening. We were picked up from our hotel and brought to a theater in downtown to watch a short film before reboarding the busses to head to the actual village, about 15 minutes south of town. I don't think you can drive yourself.
On the bus ride, a (male) chief is selected from the bus. If there aren't volunteers, someone will be forced to be the chief. The chief participates in a ceremony when you arrive at the village. After the ceremony, you spend 45 minutes at 5 different areas of the village to learn about Maori traditions. Then you see the raising of the hangi dinner, and a 30 minute performance. After that, you have the buffet dinner - chicken, lamb, veggies, dessert, and other things. The carrots were excellent. For vegetarians, you can order a special main course.
On the bus ride back to town, you are forced to sing songs with the rest of the bus.

We ended up spending 4 hours for this activity including the round trip bus ride from the downtown pickup spot to the Village. The village itself was hokey and you could easily see that it was not real, just a prop to show visitors what life was like in the old days. I guess that the modern Maoris live in regular houses and dress up in clothes like the rest of us. I would have liked to have someone describe how most Maoris live in the modern world. Anyway, did not think much of the village and presentations. Best part by far was the presentation of the fire pit where food was cooked, the buffet dinner, and the Maori dance/singing show.

This is a well- organized, beautifully presented evening. The haka display, information and stories about the culture and traditions, dance and song was all amazing. The meal was absolutely delicious and plentiful ( lamb, stuffing, potatoes, salad, fish).
This event is one of the most memorable things aboutour trip to NZ and we feel privileged to have taken part in it. P.s - our coach driver( its only 20 mins drive) was so warm and funny and entertaining also. We highly recommend the Tamaki Maori village dinner and performance night.

I would highly recommend Te Pa Tu for the most authentic experience of Maori culture available in Rotorua. Visitors are picked up at their centre in town and bussed to the village. On the way, you will learn some important words, select a chief to represent the group and be briefed on the welcome ceremony upon arrival. The tribal chief will greet your chief in the traditional Haka ritual which establishes whether your group is friend or foe. Upon successful completion to establish your group as friendly, you are invited to enter the village, receive a welcome speech and song/dance before being split into smaller groups to experience many varied cultural practices such as warrior games, medicinal plants, and rituals after being served a warm manuka honey and lemon drink and several tasty nibbles. All of the young performers are excellent and really seem to be enjoying sharing their Maori culture. Your presence and entrance fee supports the education of the tribe's young people to ensure the Maori culture thrives for the future. This part of your experience includes fun voluntary audience participation and the finale is a top notch traditional song and dance performance. You are then treated to an exceptional 5 course meal which offers plentiful servings and a variety of tastes. They even accommodated my gluten free needs. Alcoholic drinks can be purchased separately. After dessert, the performers will sing songs from every country represented in the audience which brought copious applause and laughter. The 4 hour experience is worth every penny spent and by the end, I felt authentically appreciated for my visit and that I would always be welcomed in future as family.
No wonder it is voted as the 7th best experience by Trip Advisor participants.

We went with a group of ten people for a cultural experience and dinner. Excellent hospitality from wonderful people. We were collected by bus from our hotel, welcomed into the sacred village, learned about the village life, were entertained by the concert party, and fed an excellent traditional hangi feast.
Our bus driver, Dennis kept us entertained on the way to the village and back to the hotel. Everyone who attended (from 3 years old to 91 years old) had a fun time.
Thanks Tamaki Village for a good time.

Kia ora, Thanks so much for your review. We have been spending time in hibernation revitalising our experience. Feast on Māori song, tradition, and divine seasonal kai (cuisine) within our forest Pā (village), towering Tawa trees, blazing bonfires, and forest-formed amphitheatre.
Hākari (feasting) begins with forest horotai (canapes) and culminates in a lavish 3-course fusion feast.
We hope you come to visit us again on your next trip, Nga mihi, Sarah

We rushed for a 17:20 "pick-up" but in fact waited until 17:30 that they start a movie that was not very informative nor interesting, felt like too many digital imagery rather than real people or history. Then we took a bus to the village. They started at 18:15 on the dot.
We appreciated the five cultural workshops at the beginning. It was nice to see the same people taking care of everything, not in a superficial actor way but genuinely. Then, there was a small show. Beautiful voices. Entertaining.
For dinner, the two vegetarian options were not great for one of us, others tried everything, and the dinner overall was not great (someone said mediocre, which I feel is a bit too strong) but the savoury part was definitely better than the desserts. Canned fruits in NZ summer?! Come on, not acceptable considering the ticket price (for reference Hobbiton is cheaper and serves great food). Also, the dining room was way too cold and modern (like a cheap hotel), I would have liked to eat in a more Maori-like decor to keep the nice feeling all along.
Then, our bus driver was late (we were freezing cold waiting) and instead of profusely apologizing, he kept repeating how "usually, they finish much later"!!! Were we supposed to feel cheated?! The other 4 bus drivers were all waiting for their passengers. Again, not acceptable.
We love these cultural experiences and would recommend doing that but now you understand why 4 stars not 5. Everything I mentioned is easily "fixable".

By the time we got on the bus, we knew this attraction was well worth the money. Our bus driver gave us some excellent background and our experience was top shelf. From learning about games to performing the haka, we were fully engaged with their culture. The meal was presented buffet style and there was plenty of food to go around. Highly recommended.

Is hits experience suitable for kids? We’ll be travelling with a 7 and a 9 year old. Thanks!
Written 7 December 2023
Definately suitable for kids, as long as they won't be easily scared by the Haka performance. Also, kids will need to be well behaved as laughing or being to noisy during perfomaces could be considered as disrespectful or insulting.

What is the dinner dress code for this? Smart casual or daytime adventure wear?
Written 17 September 2023
Smart casual/daytime adventure wear is fine! There are a few activities you participate in before the dinner - nothing crazy, but you wouldn't want to be wearing a tux or high heels. It is in the evening, and much of the activities are outdoors, so bring a jacket.

S this experience/dinner crowded?
Written 1 February 2023
They have an excellent organisation, I don't think they will accept overfilling the event site, because it costs quite a lot comparing to others (mittai for ex.).
The impression we had ; they are more for quality than quantity.
We were extremely satisfied overall.
The tribe leader was very sympathetic too.

We will be travelling by car from Auckland and returning after the evening show. What time does it start and finish?
Written 21 August 2019
I think it was around 8:30pm that the night concluded - you could probably head off before the dinner is served (being that last event of the evening) but I'd say you'd still have to pay for it.

As far as I have read, you also sleep in the village with other people. Could you give information about the number of people etc in the same place?
Written 24 July 2019
Did not sleep there. Wonderful educational program, dinner and entertainment. We had a full bus with us but there was plenty of room to see everything. I could have stayed in the village longer learning about the different areas of village life. The singing and dancing were beautiful.
Written 7 March 2020
What is the average number of tourists that are accommodated at one performance? Will I be with a group of 50, 100, 200... for the experience? Is the later show (7:30) less crowded? Is it less cost if you drive your own car to the Maori Village vs riding the bus? Thanks!
