- 686traceyg0 contributionsMust do tour - Hole in the RockAmazing 1/2 day tour with Nic and Bluebell. Nic’s driving into the cave and through the rock was awesome and the smaller boat enabled us to see this up close. We were lucky enough to have the most wonderful dolphin pod who hung out around the boat for such a long time, walked to the top of the island for outstanding views and then off to see fur seals, local birds and a bit of snorkelling. Nic and Bluebell made the trip excellent with their friendly smiles and they made sure everyone had a great time.Written 24 March 2025
- pauliner1040 contributionsAwesome trip with my sister, can highly recommend this companySuch a wonderful trip stopping at two islands with a walk to a scenic lookout and swim or snorkel on the second island. We were very lucky and blessed to see false killer whales, dolphins and a manta ray, on our way to the hole in the rock. Such a great, friendly, and informative crew, can highly recommend this trip.Written 24 March 2025

- 319kathd0 contributionsBay of Islands 4 hr dolphin watch cruiseAn excellent cruise. Skipper Nick is a brilliant captain, and crew people JT and Blue Bell were so courteous and professional it made the day a fantastic experience. Definitely a must do. Btw we saw other boats out there that looked over crowded. Our boat was the perfect size. Thanks guys😁Written 18 March 2025

- jaymca0 contributionsExcellent communication; adjusted their tour start time due to cruise ship delaysIsland Gateaway Tours surprised me by contacting me weeks ahead of my tour date via both Whatsapp and e-mail, keeping me informed of any possible changes to the tour schedule due to any delays reported by my cruise line. They also were very responsive to any questions that I replied back with. Most other tour companies would never spend that much time or staffing to make guests feel comfortable and supported. The boat/cruise tour itself was excellent. They had several cruises setting off from the same pier at Paiha that day, but the staff was organized and checked in each guest and assigned them to their correct boat quickly. The highlights were definitely Motuarohia/Roberton Island with its Twin Lagoons Bay (you must be in good physical condition to make the arduous 15-minute hike up to the look-out on top, regardless of how easy the young captain makes it sound; otherwise, the beach itself is very scenic to spend time at) and Motukokako/Piercy Island with its famous Hole In The Rock sea arch (the captain safely checked the waves before guiding the ship through it). Absolutely beautiful scenery at both places! The second half of the tour was a lunch/rest stop at a rocky beach. The tour provides snorkeling equipment but other guests I talked to didn't recommend the murky water. Alternatively, there were walking trails to the Urupukapuka viewpoint, although my travel partner preferred to eat lunch instead. The Bay of Islands area is quite idyllic, with crystal light blue waters, similar to parts of the Caribbean. A true gem in New Zealand.Written 15 March 2025
- Miranda B0 contributionsSpectacular trip to the Hole in the Rock.Superb trip to the Hole in the Rock with 2 island stopovers. The crew were fabulous- Cooper, Renate and the Captain were so informative and attentive to all on board. The Captain gave us so much information about where we were and he pointed out wildlife including dolphins, brown fur seals and little blue penguins. This is a must-do and we totally recommend booking with Island Getaway! Thank you all so much for such a memorable and special day.Written 15 March 2025

- Escape3137030 contributionsWe had a great time.We joined at Russel. The boat was already busy with no seating on top deck but we still enjoyed the freedom to wander on the bottom deck for best views and photos. The Skipper's short briefs on the different islands and the local history were informative and fun. We stopped and got off at 2 lovely islands with opportunity to stretch our legs, swim and eat. We got our own lunch from a bakers in Russel before departure and we were glad we did - more choice and able to eat and drink when it suited us. So take water as a minimum. We had a great time and would recommend it.Written 13 March 2025
- CRKeith0 contributionsScenic BeautyBeautiful scenery! We went right through the Hole in the Rock! The crew was very friendly. The captain was flexible in adjusting for the weather conditions. We were so glad we did this excursion when we saw other boats that were completely packed with people.Written 12 March 2025
- Vicspic250 contributionsAwesome afternoonAwesome afternoon. Skipper Zac and guide Blue were great and very knowledgeable. We made it to the Hole in the rock but too rough to go through. Stopped at 2 islands and saw some seals on bird island. We didn't see any dolphins but did see a flying fish. Wonderful would recommend 😁Written 10 March 2025
- AshokM7260 contributionsHole in the rock cruise is a mustIn the morning 🌄 on 04/02/2025, we went on a 4.5 hours cruise 🛳 in the Pacific ocean from Paihia. It was a scenic journey with cool breeze blowing across the sea 🌊. We saw common dolphins 🐬 & the popular hole in the rock. We had an hour long stoppage at the beautiful Urupukapuka island 🏝 where we had our breakfast & I had my beer 🍺. The almost turquoise water at the island brought back the memories of Maldives. The calm, peaceful, serene, island made me recall an island in Pattaya, where similar water-sports activities took place but the beach ⛱️ was terribly noisy & overcrowded.Written 10 March 2025

The boat tour around the islands was fantastic, well worth doing from many angles. Nick and Cass on Island Getaway tours were so friendly and informative. Nick drove the boat perfectly to see the seals on seagull rock, into cathedral rock to see the exquisite blue water and through the hole in the rock. The lunch option was well worth $20, lunch was delicious and plentiful.
We would totally recommend this day out.

Amazing day spent exploring the Bay of Islands with Adam and Cass, who were both friendly, knowledgeable and humorous. The boat wasn’t too big so allowed for a more personal experience. We had two island stops, and at the second one we were provided with snorkelling equipment to explore the beautiful bay. My family also done the short walks on both islands and I would highly recommend checking out the army bunker on the second stop. Our group was lucky enough to spot a whale shark, which is fairly rare and made the day extra special. Definitely book with Island getaways as they give a portion of the fee back to conservation on Motukokako island

We set off before 7am in the morning, in order to get there early so that we can spend more time outside. The boat travelled northeast, stopping and starting. The captain introduced the islands, big and small, as if to make us remember each unique island. But we were looking forward to seeing dolphins. After about two hours of sailing, we only saw a little sea lion resting on White Island (self-named, but actually Guano Island).
Just when everyone was a little anxious, the captain announced that we had arrived at Cave Island, which looked like an elephant standing in the sea from a distance, allowing the passing ships to shuttle back and forth under the elephant's trunk, sometimes screaming.
After the captain circled the island, he asked everyone to take the last chance to take pictures. As the boat went farther and farther, everyone left a ripple in their hearts, where did my dolphin go...

Truly a great experience. The crew was extremely welcoming and gave interesting infos on the islands and the region. The stops, especially roberton island, were beautiful and with a good timeframe. The boat is not a big as other companies so we had a less crowded experience.
For the boat transfer I recommend wind resistent jackets but the crew provided blankets. All in all a very nice trip

The tour was cool, the landscapes beautiful.
The team consisted of the captain and three very friendly and helpful ladies.
The wind was quite cold, but blankets and hot drinks were handed out.
It was impressive that you walked in the historical footsteps of Captain Cook and got an idea of the first encounter between the conquerors and the indigenous people.
After a short climb to a lookout point you were rewarded with a truly magnificent view.
You shouldn't miss a short hike at the second island stop, Otheii Bay. Within a few minutes you reach points with wonderful views of the surrounding bays. There is also a good restaurant there for lunch.
We also drove through the Hole in the Rock and saw some wild animals, seals and little penguins.
All in all a leisurely tour with a pleasant group size and we were the only boat everywhere. So no crowds.

Amazing way to spend the day in the Bay of Islands! Great weather with great crew/hosts in one of the gems of New Zealand.
Our trip included 2 Island stop overs which offered walks up to 360° views of the bay, clear warm water for swimming or simply relaxing on the shoreline. We also ventured out to the Cape Brett Peninsula and out to the world famous hole in the rock and were fortunate to encounter Penguins, Furr seals and Dolphins! The vessel we were on (Arataki) is a new and purpose built vessel for the tour which delivered Amazing results for everyone, it was very spacious, had a bathroom onboard, cold drinks available, blankets for keeping warm and no matter where you were sitting you had a Amazing view. We had great commentary and hosting from Hamish and Tish. Can't reccomend this trip enough. Suitable for people of all ages. Thanks you so much Hamish, Tish and Adam.

We took this tour in June while in the Bay of Islands and loved it!
Our captain and the crew member (Abby?) were amazing and even pointed out penguins while we were cruising.
The Hole on the Rock is big enough they can take the boat through and the island stopover was perfect - it was only us boat group, but they said it can be busy in the summer.
Would definitely recommend this tour for people that want to see all the Bay of Islands and not be on the big touristy boats

This trip was a highlight of our NZ travels! Tisha and skipper Hamish were welcoming and knowledgeable. We stopped on two islands and were able to walk up to high points of both. The views were stunning! We were also given brief histories of the bay and the islands we visited, and info of ongoing environmental work to rid the islands of pests dangerous to the beloved kiwi and other birds. And of course the Hole in the Rock was not to be missed. We were able to motor through it!
This cruise can take up to 50 people, much fewer than other cruises. There were less than 20 the day we went (in the winter) so we got lots of individual attention. Highly recommend!

We hadn't planned to take a boat trip this time but, quite by chance, dropped into the Island Getaway office on Sunday morning. We hit the jackpot!Adam took a small group of us out for the 3 hour trip which knocked the spots off the big, highly commercialized catameran cruises we have done in the past. I can honestly say that Adam is one of the finest host/guides I have ever met;relaxed, informative, passionate about the wildlfe and everything maritime.Children would warm to his easy manner and their curiosity would respond to his way of explaining things. We couldn't fault a single thing-his timing was spot-on yet we never once felt rushed.I would take any of the tours he runs in preference to the larger cruises as the service is so personal. We saw penguins, dolphins,Roberton Island,Urapukapuka Island, fed fish from the wharf, picnicked and, above all, relaxed and absorbed the beauty of the surroundings.

I went on this great tour with my family. What an amazing experience, the staff were just the best. Excellent commentary that was very imformative and had me cackling like a hyena. We got to stop over and rest enjoy beautiful spots and go through the hole in the rock 2x. Tish, Hamish, and Conor, I believe their names were (sorry if i have the names wrong). Thank you for being such a solid team and helping me drag my girls pram along 🤣 really appreciate it.
