About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- gromitsf0 contributionsWow such a pleasant surpriseSuper cool trip through the glow worm cave and ith an excellent guide to relate local traditional knowledge about the origin and history of the cave system.Written 30 September 2024
- 747janem0 contributionsRainy day to Cape ReingaUnfortunately the day we went it poured with rain. We still enjoyed the trip as the driver kept us really informed and his knowledge about the area was very good and kept us amused. Again the 90 mile beach tour went ahead but couldn't get out of the coach due to the weather. If the weather was good the view would be brilliant.Written 6 May 2024
- Gary B0 contributionsStarted 45 minutes late for tardy passengersThis was probably the worst tour I’ve ever been on. Waited forty-five minutes beyond tour start time to wait for passengers booked on a different tour. Was told it wouldn’t cut the tour length down but did not stop at end for photos as stated in description. The oldest building in New Zealand was not kept up well or worth seeing. The lunch was good, however. Rainbow Falls was worth seeing but not the other one included. Waste of time and money. Should never wait that long for late passengers with a hard departure time like we hadWritten 16 April 2024
- sfkatie20240 contributionsKawiti glow work cave tour and Opua forest walkGlow worms can only be seen in the dark, and this cave is particularly suited to it. Special lights were provided to the walkers and the guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. There were handrails for the narrow walk and we were cautioned to watch our heads (it is a natural cave, folks). The forest walk was also informative (we learned about the indigenous trees) due to our driver/walk guide. This walk had some ups and down terrain in a narrow forest footpath, but it was not too hard for me. (I am in 70s and not great shape.) There was also an unexpected stop to admire the work of a really creative architect in a nearby town.Written 8 March 2024
- kathypettet0 contributionsKawiti Glow Worm Cave Tour and Forest WalkCave tour was excellent with great commentary, very educational and amazing little glow worms. The forest walk also fabulous and the tour host, his knowledge was remarkable, an extremely likeable gentleman. 10/10Written 27 February 2024
- chrisbaker20240 contributionsGreat tour!Tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Glow worms was a must see! Will definitely use them again!Written 27 February 2024
- Hugh N0 contributionsExcellent day out. This was an excellent day out and a great way to explore the local area. Our driver/guide was great and imparted a lot of information. The fact that there were only eight of us made it a great experience and the fish and chip lunch was superb, as was the local beer. Highly recommended.Written 26 February 2024
- Nadine L0 contributionsGlowing review- pun intendedBay of Islands is lovely. We had great weather and Bill was a wonderful guide to the Caves, the forest with the 1000 year old Kapua trees and the town of Kawakawa to see Hundertstasse recycled public bathrooms and small town. Vans are small and able to get into areas the cruise ship tour busses cannot. They are prompt and make sure you return to your ship before they weigh anchor.Written 24 February 2024
- Farangdee0 contributionsA hidden treasureI place worthwhile visiting. We were lucky and had a guide just for ourselves. He was a young local boy from the region and he knew everything about the cave. It is really impressive to see these thousands of green shining points, especially at the ceiling of the cave they look like the milky way in a clear dark night.Written 10 February 2024
- Amy T0 contributionsA special treatWe nearly missed connecting with our group due to long shuttle lines from our ship, but they managed to accommodate us and it was a really nice tour, with a lot of variety. The forest walk was really lovely and tranquil. Our guide was knowledgeable and kind. The family that operated the glow worm caves were very welcoming and that was such a treat. The caves are huge, with high "ceilings" like you're in a cathedral in some spots. Lots of beautiful glow worms. We were very happy on this tour. Thank you to everyone at Mullarkey Tours.Written 2 February 2024
- E4110ASjuliew0 contributionsOverpriced tour and underdeliveredWe went on this wine tasting tour. It was most disappointing 1st winery Marsden was good but lunch disappointing. The cruise ship had a Novo virus on board and eating from a shared plate with one set of utensils was unacceptable. Second stop was a hobby vineyard owned by an ex. American and he and an American man on the tour dominated the time on all sort of issues not related to wine (which was ordinary selection) Our driver should have cut the conversation short and got us to move on. The last vineyard did not give any commentary as to the wine tastings and our driver left us and came back 40 mins later. We were suppose to go to a Craft beer brewery... that didn't happen.Written 28 November 2023
- Leavethechickenshome0 contributionsWell run tour with the right mix of experiences. We arrived via cruise ship and highly recommend this tour for those looking for independent tours instead of ship tours. Small group and well run with professional and knowledgeable tour guide. The glow worms are glowy, and the cave itself is also a stunning work of nature. The kauri trees are majestic, and the forest preserve peaceful. So glad we got to experience both the caves and forest. We also enjoyed the small lunch break at Kawakawa. After visiting the art installation, we wandered into a local grocery store and purchased several local snacks to try. On our way back, we were given the option of being dropped off near the open market for more shopping or returning directly to the tender wharf. Just a very well done tour that let us sample some of the beauty of the area.Written 19 October 2023
- Navigator024021391460 contributionsBeautiful and Tranquil LocationWorth the visit. The outside surroundings are so peaceful and beautiful, the location is tranquil and quiet. We have been to Waitomo but still enjoyed this less commercial location. The walkway/boardwalk inside is in good condition and the guide was knowledgeable and easygoing. Felt the price was a little high at $40 per adult and $20 per child.Written 22 April 2023
- 691nishac0 contributionsNot HappyExtremely disappointed!!! I booked the Glow Worm Tour as a Shore Excursion on my Cruise to New Zealand, through Expedia. In Bay of islands, ships are not docked on the port and use tenders to transport the passengers on shore. On 1st of Jan 2023, we were scheduled to visit Bay of Islands but due to rough waters the Captain decided to cancel the port of call as it was risky to transport passengers on the tenders. So we had to cancel our tour and we were hoping to get atleast some refund. To our surprise after hours of calls and back and forth we were told Mullarkey Tours will not refund our money and will forfeit the full cost of the tour. Other passengers who had booked the tour through Royal Caribbean got their full refund. My suggestion is as ships are not docked on port in Bay of Islands, possibility of cancelling the port of call is high and you are better off booking directly with the ship as you will the money back if anything changes. I lost money!! Save yours!!Written 15 January 2023
- contrails20210 contributionsGreat Value - Great Day OutExcellent tour and so much better than self-driving. By choosing this tour we saw and learned about places and events that we would otherwise have missed. By being part of this small group tour the whole experience felt personal and so much more enjoyable than expected. Highly Recommended.Written 29 May 2021

Relaxing, friendly and informative. The perfect way to enjoy some of Northland’s vineyards and breweries.
Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about the areas history while driving to each location.
Delicious food at Marsden estate paired with a range of white and red wines. Tall tales and boutique wines at Fat Pig. Phat Brewery’s spacious bar and beer garden has something for all ages, popular with locals.

We had a fantastic time on the wine tour! Had some really good commentary on the way to the vineyards, a lovely platter. Then we went to the fat pig winery that was really nice to hear about the wines from the owner, we loved the white diamond wine!
We also had to buy lemoncello at the next winery since it was so good!

This tour exceeded our expectations. Derek, our driver/host was friendly and informative. All three vineyards were exceptional in their own right and provided us with a great selection of wines and background information in a friendly and welcoming way. A truly enjoyable afternoon which we strongly recommend.
