About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 550gerryl0 contributionsA lovely day outWe had a lovely day with our guide Ken. The places we visited were super friendly and in most cases generous with the wine and beer portions. There was so much choice, it was almost too much! We would highly recommend Mullarkey Tours.Written 3 February 2025
- T5560PKstephens0 contributionsGreat host, minimal wine and beer tasting options in this region of NZBooking and arranging pickup and drop off was easy with Ken. We had 3 stops but unfortunately the wine and beer at the 1st stop was the same as what was on offer at the pub where we had lunch (the second stop).Written 1 January 2025
- 336birgits0 contributionsFun experience with excellent guideWell organized tour, efficient and informative. Small vans with about 12 passengers make this excursions more memorable and personalized than some of the larger bus tours. Our guide, Derek, was very knowledgeable, happy to answer the group’s questions and an excellent and safe driver. Thanks to the smaller bus size, we got to go deep into a Kauri forest preserve to see these magnificent native trees. The glow worm cave was impressive too. An enjoyable and educational experience - highly recommended!Written 30 December 2024
- Melanie B0 contributionsGetting amongst NZ natureWhat a fabulous day! It began with a tour of the glow worm caves which were magical. Loved our toilet stop! My family absolutely loved the Opua forest walk. Although it was raining this didn’t dampen our enjoyment. The giant kauri trees were majestic. Our guide Bill was friendly, knowledgeable and organised. Loved every minute.Written 22 December 2024
- marasunshine550 contributionsUnique experience without the crowdsThe guides were very knowledgeable and open for all questions. Easy access and no crowds. Enjoyed the Māori stories.Written 14 December 2024
- CameronF5430 contributionsGoes the extra mile, very knowledgeable!Derek was very accommodating, knew alot about the area and the wines in the area. He went out of his way to go the extra mile. 100% recommend this wine tour.Written 1 December 2024
- Alziere780 contributionsGood value taste of the NorthRelaxing, friendly and informative. The perfect way to enjoy some of Northland’s vineyards and breweries. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about the areas history while driving to each location. Delicious food at Marsden estate paired with a range of white and red wines. Tall tales and boutique wines at Fat Pig. Phat Brewery’s spacious bar and beer garden has something for all ages, popular with locals.Written 5 October 2024
- gromitsf0 contributionsWow such a pleasant surpriseSuper cool trip through the glow worm cave and ith an excellent guide to relate local traditional knowledge about the origin and history of the cave system.Written 30 September 2024
- 747janem0 contributionsRainy day to Cape ReingaUnfortunately the day we went it poured with rain. We still enjoyed the trip as the driver kept us really informed and his knowledge about the area was very good and kept us amused. Again the 90 mile beach tour went ahead but couldn't get out of the coach due to the weather. If the weather was good the view would be brilliant.Written 6 May 2024
- sfkatie20240 contributionsKawiti glow work cave tour and Opua forest walkGlow worms can only be seen in the dark, and this cave is particularly suited to it. Special lights were provided to the walkers and the guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. There were handrails for the narrow walk and we were cautioned to watch our heads (it is a natural cave, folks). The forest walk was also informative (we learned about the indigenous trees) due to our driver/walk guide. This walk had some ups and down terrain in a narrow forest footpath, but it was not too hard for me. (I am in 70s and not great shape.) There was also an unexpected stop to admire the work of a really creative architect in a nearby town.Written 8 March 2024
- kathypettet0 contributionsKawiti Glow Worm Cave Tour and Forest WalkCave tour was excellent with great commentary, very educational and amazing little glow worms. The forest walk also fabulous and the tour host, his knowledge was remarkable, an extremely likeable gentleman. 10/10Written 27 February 2024
- chrisbaker20240 contributionsGreat tour!Tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Glow worms was a must see! Will definitely use them again!Written 27 February 2024
- Nadine L0 contributionsGlowing review- pun intendedBay of Islands is lovely. We had great weather and Bill was a wonderful guide to the Caves, the forest with the 1000 year old Kapua trees and the town of Kawakawa to see Hundertstasse recycled public bathrooms and small town. Vans are small and able to get into areas the cruise ship tour busses cannot. They are prompt and make sure you return to your ship before they weigh anchor.Written 24 February 2024
- Farangdee0 contributionsA hidden treasureI place worthwhile visiting. We were lucky and had a guide just for ourselves. He was a young local boy from the region and he knew everything about the cave. It is really impressive to see these thousands of green shining points, especially at the ceiling of the cave they look like the milky way in a clear dark night.Written 10 February 2024
- Amy T0 contributionsA special treatWe nearly missed connecting with our group due to long shuttle lines from our ship, but they managed to accommodate us and it was a really nice tour, with a lot of variety. The forest walk was really lovely and tranquil. Our guide was knowledgeable and kind. The family that operated the glow worm caves were very welcoming and that was such a treat. The caves are huge, with high "ceilings" like you're in a cathedral in some spots. Lots of beautiful glow worms. We were very happy on this tour. Thank you to everyone at Mullarkey Tours.Written 2 February 2024

Had a wonderful and very informative private tour with our lovely guide Ken. It was all worth it as we've been to a lot of tourist places around the islands. Exceeded our expectations of the tour. Highly recommended if you're stopping by the island.

Book with Ken and enjoy the following benefits:
1. Save money
2. See more
3. Smaller group
4. Ken’s insights
5. More comfort
My husband broke his ankle a month before our cruise, and Ken went above and beyond to help us see everything, including the huge Kauri trees shown in the attached picture, with my husband rolling along on his all-terrain knee scooter.
We are so glad we took this tour!

This was an excellent day out and a great way to explore the local area.
Our driver/guide was great and imparted a lot of information.
The fact that there were only eight of us made it a great experience and the fish and chip lunch was superb, as was the local beer.
Highly recommended.

This was probably the worst tour I’ve ever been on. Waited forty-five minutes beyond tour start time to wait for passengers booked on a different tour. Was told it wouldn’t cut the tour length down but did not stop at end for photos as stated in description. The oldest building in New Zealand was not kept up well or worth seeing. The lunch was good, however. Rainbow Falls was worth seeing but not the other one included. Waste of time and money. Should never wait that long for late passengers with a hard departure time like we had

Hi,
Yesterday, was a bad day from our point of view and the Cruise Ship's management of the tender process.
Given the events, we are reviewing our policy with respect to how long we wait for late passengers. I can only apologize for the fact that you had such a long wait.

Our tour guide Ken took us on a wonderful tour of the Bay of Islands, the glow worm caves was a highlight, so too the toilet designed by Hundertwasser. Ken was extremely professional and knowledgeable about this beautiful area of New Zealand
