Scenic Roads less travelled
Oct 2020
We wanted to explore the "scenic roads less travelled" in the Bay of Islands region. Mark and Tui proposed some very nice small roads, very scenic ! ... We had a wonderful day. Thank you and we highly recommend Rogue Pony experiences.

Thanks Michel, so pleased that you had a great time on those back roads. That route is one of our favourites as it is so varied and contrasting in its geology and well as the ecology of the farmland, wetlands and forestry. Cheers, Mark

Fantastic day out
We had a wonderful day out today with our host Tui . Tui was waiting for us at Wanganui pier as we disembarked our Crystal cruise ship tender. There were 4 of us in her Blue Jeep as we traversed all the back roads and valleys of this magnificent coastal area. She was very well versed with the history of her home turf and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience . She asked us whether there were any points of interest that we wanted to see but we left it all in her good and capable hands. We saw so much over our 5 hours including waterfalls and Kauri forests, a stop for coffee and hand made chocolates was a highlight with another stop for “hot chips “ that we all loved. Thankyou to her for a great day , my only feedback would be to say it would have been more comfortable with just 2 of us in the back of the Jeep instead of 3 together with the front passenger seat .
Highly recommended and very personalized.

Tui agrees the hot chips were awesome and she had such a great time with you guys that the day seemed to go too quickly. Thanks for the feedback about space. Four passengers is a "friendly" fit with three in the back seat and we try to make everyone aware of this before they book. Part of the rogue Jeep Wrangler experience is sharing with your travel companions while getting off the main highways. We hope you found a lovely tour to do in your next stop in Tauranga and hope the possum goes down a treat. Cheers Tui and Mark.

Fun and informative day out!
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Mark! We opted for the glow worm caves, which was my favorite stop. Fascinating! But the entire tour was an excellent way to see the varied terrain and natural beauty of the Bay of Islands. Mark is extremely knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. Highly recommend!

Great to hear your feedback Cynthia! Everyone who opts for the Glow Worm Caves always finds it fascinating. I hope you let the others rest before hitting the Ballroom that evening. Cheers Mark.

A great choice for a day on The Bay of Islands.

Mark was waiting for us at the pier where are cruise ship tender dropped us off just like he said. We were a bit late as we didn't take the first tender available but he was waiting patiently. He will customize the day according to what you want to see. Definitely a more affordable and personable option over the cruise ship excursions. Mark knows the island very well and we enjoyed our day with him. No complaints-a perfect outing!

Excellent tour and experience

We were met by Tui when our tender arrived at the dock and taken to a new, clean and very comfortable jeep. We then proceeded to have a very enjoyable half day, touring the area, visiting the magnificent flora and trees, seeing the countryside and getting a sense of the excitement that sailing week offers. This was our first stop on a two week intensive cruise around New Zealand and we were very pleased to have had this tour at the outset. Tui is well-informed, answered our questions and provided us with information that we were eager to learn. Thank you for introducing us to your paradise in the Bay of Islands- we can easily understand why you live there. J, J and M

Kia Ora (Hi) Joan, Awesome that you found our tour a great start to your NZ trip. Sailing week has wrapped up now but the Millennium Cup Super-yacht regatta starts tomorrow! It is not hard mahi (work) when you have guests like yourselves to share the area with. Ka kite ano, Tui and Mark

Amazing tour with a wonderful guide!!
Oct 2018 • Family
Mark was absolutely amazing and had a wonderful knowledge of the area, the jeep was so comfortable and allowed us to go off road. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone as it was a wonderful 5 hours touring around Paihia, Waitangi, Kerikeri, Opua, Kawakawa and many other places. Such an amazing tour and a wonderful way to see the surrounding areas with great opportunities to stop and take photos. It is definitely a must do tour!!

Bay of Island, Paihia Overview
Jan 2018 • Couples
We thought we had pre-booked a jeep tour only to realize I did not have an email confirmation. However, we walked into the Paihia waterfront where the cruise ship free shuttle bus dropped us off and found that Rogue Pony tours had an opening. We were in a new air conditioned bright purple jeep. Mark was our guide. We first went to the seaside town of Opua and out onto the commercial wharf. Here we saw the car ferry to Okiato and the location of the first capital of New Zealand across the Veronica Channel. We then drove through Opua Marina having to dodge a houseboat being towed along the road. Then up a forest covered back road to the lookout point overlooking the harbour and out to our cruiseship. Here we put the top up on the Jeep because the next leg was through the unsealed roads of the Opua Forest. Up into the hills and past kauri trees, farmland, elf-moulting sheep, horses and cows. We then went down from the hills past ponga (silver fern trees) and beehives to the Main Highway 1, where we opted not to go to Kawakawa and the Hundertwasser toilets (which now I wish we had seen but we were getting hungry). So we travelled through the town of Moerewa for a quick stop at Henry Williams’ beautiful wooden Anglican church. Lunch at the very picturesque Marsden Estate Winery was next where I had delicous lamb loin and the boys had rare tuna. After a few glasses of Chardonnay we were off to Rainbow Falls along a unexpectedly flat road. The falls lived up to their name as a rainbow was visible in the spray at the foot of the falls. We also managed to walk a small section of the Te Araroa trail that extends the entire length of the NZ. This was alongside the remains of the culvert used by the pioneers to generate electricity for the trading post in the Kerikeri Basin.

Next was a quick photo stop at the Kerikeri Basin for a view over to the Stone Store and Kemp house, the oldest building in NZ, before making our way south again. We called down Old Wharf Road to have a quick look at the much smaller Haruru Falls to compare with Rainbow falls on the way back to Paihia. We stopped at Seahorse Souvenirs ( a little better prices than right in town) to buy a hat and local Manuka honey. Mark dropped us back to the cruise ship jetty so we didn’t have to take the shuttle bus back to the ships tender. It was a full day of sights and Mark gave excellent commentary, If you have time the Waitangi grounds treat house is with in easy walking distance right at the cruise drop off point.
I recommend you pre-book as they only have 2 jeeps.

I am so glad you found us and we had a Jeep tour available for you on the day! A relaxing lunch is always high on the priority list, especially at such a great winery. I hope the rest of your trip to NZ went as well.

MUCH Better than Excellent

Like the other reviewer, we do not take the ship offered excursions but set off on our own. We did not book with Mark ahead of time but he (and his purple pony vehicle) were near the information kiosk. We have travelled the world and rarely have we experienced a tour as personal as this. Mark worked out a route based upon our interests -- there was no set tour that we had to follow. We saw everything we wanted and much more from someone who was incredibly knowledgeable and personable. Our tour was supposed to be 4 hours but it went beyond that and Mark didn't seem to care. He appeared to really enjoy the fact that we were satisfied. He obviously really cares about his home because when we went to the Manginangina scenic reserve, he sterilized and scrubbed our shoes before and after we went into the rain forest to ensure no foreign, and potentially damaging species went into or out of the area. We didn't see the larger tour buses doing the same. Although he hasn't been in business long enough to get a lot of reviews, this is the ONLY tour you should consider on Bay of Islands. That lack of reviews makes his site not visible on Trip Advisor and that's unfortunate. After a day with Mark you'll feel like you've seen the country and made a friend all at the same time.

Amazing experience
Dec 2017 • Couples
We did both the jeep tour and the mustang tour after arriving into bay of islands on a cruise ship and had a fantastic time. The guides were really friendly and knew their stuff and gave a really good overview and history of the area. They also ensured that we went to places that were not overcrowded - something that after being on a crowded cruise ship we appreciated. Thank you both for your lovely hospitality.

A Fabulous day with Mark!
Dec 2017 • Friends
We are frequent cruisers, and rather than joining the ships offered tours, we prefer to research and arrange our own private tours.

At Bay of Islands in particular, there were a wide variety of things we wanted to see, and we couldn't find a public tour that hit just the right ones for us. I contacted Rogue Pony with my wishlist, as well as our arrival and departure information, and they took care of the rest!

We decided to do a customized 6 hour Gallop in their beautiful purple pony, and Mark arranged for us to see all of our priority sights. We even had to adjust the start time at the last minute when a friend decided to join us, and they did so without an issue. Mark was kind, understanding, and more than accommodating!

Our tour included Horse Shoe falls, Rainbow falls, Glow worms, lunch at Marsden winery, and the Kauri forest! Rainbow falls was definitely the favorite water attraction, but it was nice to see Horse Shoe as well since we were so close. The Kauri forest and Glow worms are attractions not to miss. Both are unique to New Zealand, and have a lot of history with the people who settled there. Despite the fantastic things I already mentioned, Mark absolutely stole the show with his incredible array of local knowledge, his humor, and the welcoming environment he created.

I tend to ask a lot of local history and general questions (no really, I mean A LOT!!!!), and not only was he exceedingly willing to engage in all trails of conversation, but also has the depth of knowledge needed to answer EVERYTHING I threw at him. He had no warning of my affinity for questions and knowledge, yet genuinely answered each and every question with correct and thoughtful answers! Simply fantastic!

In addition to Mark, our favorite stop of the tour was at Marsden Winery for lunch! We were treated to a spectacular spread of tapas platters, and enjoyed a bottle of their Cabernet! The food was delicious, the wine fantastic, and their setting picture perfect. I truly could have stayed there all day sipping wine, taking pictures, and relaxing on their beautiful grounds!

As a native Kiwi, and long time Bay resident he is well equipped to talk about all local subjects, and quite willing to share his local perspective. Mark's wife (and co-owner of the business) is also a native local, and a kind, welcoming person! After Mark dropped us off at the port, he and his wife returned to thank us, and share a gift with us. WHAT A TREAT! Days later we are still fighting over the remains of our local sweet treat, and we can't stop talking about the excellent trip we had.

I would HIGHLY recommend Mark to anyone wishing to tour Bay of Islands!
