    A must do.
The cultural performance was fantastic. Gifted performers who merged culture and humour. Our tour guide Sissy brought the place alive with her wealth of knowledge and humour. A real must do.

    Essential visit.
An essential destination for all New Zealanders. Take your time to wander the museum and look at the documents and stories presented. The Treaty grounds were a perfect place to reflect on us and our place in this country. Shows that much of the political shallow stuff going on right now is shallow and without merit. Intensely relaxing and fulfilling but also intensly political.f

We could all be French speakers now, if only....
On a chilly but sunny Matariki Sunday I spent a superb afternoon at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The site of the birth of the Nation is stunningly beautiful in its own right but take the 'Historical Tour' if you want to be transported to times of trading and settlement of Aotearoa from 800 years ago until the present day. Our guide, CeeCee was outstanding; knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the Bay of Islands. She had our adult tour group in the palms of her hands as she told stories of the newcomers to this young land. Thoroughly enjoyed her anecdotes, what a gem!

A must-see historic gem plus two great museums.
A NZ must-see to try to understand the history, especially if you are foreign like us. This is an excellent site for telling so much of the history of the Maori and European settlers in one place. Very knowledgeable guide and a good system using earpieces so you could wander away to take pictures and still hear what she said. We did the most basic tour, which included a short but entertaining Maori cultural experience. There are also 2 excellent museums on site as well as the homestead, one telling the history of the treaty and the other the price of citizenship. As we were there over Anzac day the latter had particular resonance. We split our visit over 2 days as there was so much to take in and we wanted to do it justice. The entry ticket allows you to do this, which is a really great idea.

    Awesome morning tour of Waitangi
Wow ! What an awesome morning we had with tour guide CC at the Waitangi treaty grounds. Cc what a story teller your passion and knowledge was outstanding the way you brought the past alive I felt like I was transported back in time. Your story telling spun all the information together you were confident passionate and humorous. You entwined European and Māori history with such ease and respect. Your Te reo (Māori language) and ability to recall history was very impressive. Thank you for a fabulous morning.

    Very worthwhile doing this.
We went here in February 2024, even though Tripadvisor keeps showing the date as January. This is the 3rd time I have had to do this Review. We selected the Experience Pass which was valid for 2 days and included a guided tour and a Cultural Performance. The guided tour provided headsets, so we were easily able to hear the tour guide at all times. Shane was very good and full of information which he explained clearly. The Cultural Performance was excellent and very well presented with photo opportunities with the performers afterwards.

Wonderful experience with our amazingly knowledgeable guide
I thought I would learn a little about the Māori culture and see some commercialized dances. Instead, we were treated to a cultural experience with only 5 performers, all with beautiful, strong voices. The performances by these highly talented individuals felt very authentic and personal. The performance was followed by an incredible tour. Our guide Cici was not only knowledgeable about the history of New Zealand, it was obvious she had a deep understanding of the Māori people and their interactions with the foreigners who came to New Zealand. It felt as though we were being led and taught by our favorite college professor. She found out where we were from and then told us how people from our part of the world first came to New Zealand and their roles both positive and negative in New Zealand’s history. I learned so much from her witty narrative! Having experienced other tour guides on our trip to New Zealand, I was nervous I would have a difficult time hearing or understanding what was being said. First, comfortable earphones we passed out, then Cici made sure we could hear and understand her. By the end of the tour, every one in our group was commenting on how they had never had such a great tour guide who imparted so much knowledge in a fun and interesting manner. This experience is a must do when you are near the Bay of Islands! You will leave with a much greater understanding of New Zealand’s past and present.

FABULOUS TOUR GUIDE. Informed, personable and funny.
CC has been a FABULOUS tour guide!!!!! She is widely informed and humorous in her delivery!! She was extremely personable and able to engage with people of such a wide variety of countries!! What a delight as well were her language skills to those in us in her group. I’ve been on this tour several times before as we’ve hosted guests to NZ, but never before with such a well-informed and entertaining guide. Kia ora.

Every visitor to NZ should try to go
We had felt that $60 entry was steep but read reviews and decided to go. We are so glad we did as it was excellent, a model which could be copied. We had been in some very good free museums so did not resent paying this one time. All tourists should make an effort to learn about the history of the countries they visit and compare it to their own. Our tips would be to go when it opens and is quiet. Book the 1000 guided tour which leads to the excellent cultural show. I volunteered to be the chief - great fun and guarantees a front row seat! If you can, go for the second day, go early again and see everything crowd free.

Honestly, I didn’t think I would enjoy doing this as I’m not very familiar with Maori culture. However, after being encouraged by our very gracious hosts at Morepork Riverside Lodge, it was decided we should go. I am very glad we did, it was such a worthwhile experience. Starting with a guided tour and learning how to pronounce Maori vowels was fascinating and enlightening. How New Zealand (Aotearoa) became their home, and the history of the treaties that are in place even today was a great history lesson for me. Then there was a cooking lesson, how to prepare the wonderful food we were going to have later, and cook it in a pit. Talk about whetting one’s appetite! Now on to the meeting house for a fantastic Maori presentation; (not concert) getting there required ‘defeating’ three Maori chiefs which first needed three volunteers from our group to act as our chiefs. (Go for that, you won't retreat it.) Great fun! After all that, if you want, there is a bit of time to go through the museum or stroll through the grounds, but by then your tummy is really rumbling. So...finally back to the cafe to eat. A drink is included and oh so yummy food. This whole experience really changed my outlook on going to culture presentations in the future. A must go for you to see.

Great informative tour, a little bit steep for some people, could limit older or people with disabilities to be able to manage some of the steep hill, be ideal if they had a golf cart or similar as the show is at the top and would enable those people to view the show. My sister has a heart condition and missed the afternoon show. In the evening show which is a different show, the staff took her up in a car for that performance. Lovely food and dessert, the staff was so helpful and friendly, nothing at all was to much trouble. Would recommend.

Waitangi is a must see for any tourists travelling to New Zealand, as it is full of history and information. We really enjoyed our guided tour from our guide Dave, who was very informative and friendly, and stuck around for ages at the end to answer questions. We also really liked the cultural show, which was very entertaining and well worth the admission price.

My Mum and I came to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to find out more about our ancestors. Shane was an excellent tour guide through the grounds for our guided tour, the group who did the cultural performance were spectacular both after the tour and during the night time Hangi and Concert experience.
The Hangi was so great, sitting next to all different people from all over the world learning about this one culture and sharing stories. The team who prepared the Hangi and did all the greetings and blessings were so wonderful and welcoming.
I would definitely come back to do this experience again one day.

I attended the first Hangi and cultural performance for the season on the 4th December and was blown away.
The host or storyteller was amazing, the dancers were mesmerising and the entire experience was very authentic. I was moved to tears.
The meal afterwards was delicious and the kissing worthy of any five star restaurant.
Highly recommended and I can’t wait to return.

This was an excellent event from the moment you arrive to when you leave. The host was both very informative and jovial making us laugh. He was very approachable and had a wealth of knowledge about the Māori culture. The traditional Māori welcome was amazing and we learnt a lot about their customs and culture. The final Hakka was both moving and exciting. The hungi dinner was plentiful and tasty. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would recommend this without hesitation. Well done indeed to all of the hosts

The guide had a nice relaxed style with a typical Mauri droll sense of humour.
The concert was clearly aimed at the tourist but still had real feeling.
We had little understanding of the issues surrounding the original treaty but have a much better understanding now.
Having a ticketing system which allows you to go in free next day too is a nice touch - we popped back to to check on some facts the following day.

This was an extremely entertaining and informative event. We had a guided tour by an historian who was excellent. We were treated to two amazing concerts reflecting skills learned over centuries of the Māori history. We were taken down through a forest area to be shown how the Hangi style of cooking worked, the meal is cooked underground for about 10 hours, it was delicious. Three volunteers were asked to greet three Māori warriors who came through the forest. They presented the volunteer, guests with a token and the volunteer had to pick it up to show they come in peace. The volunteers were told to back away and not turn their backs as this is disrespectful. Overall it was a truly entertaining and informative experience and we picked up a lot of knowledge. Highly recommend.

My wife and I did the Hāngi, concert, tour and cultural performance. Amazing historical museums and very grateful to learn and experience some incredible maori culture in such an engaging way with their stories told through masterful group performances right up close as well.
The team are friendly and very engaging. Easy 5 stars and must experience for everyone.

Had a phenomenal day at the treaty grounds! Did the hangi combo and the evening meal and performance is more formal and serious than the evening so we’ll worth it.

I became a chief in the evening (Chief 2 by our excellent host Mukai) and was challenged by one of the Māori tribe.

Highly recommend!
