About
The Bay of Islands is one of the most picturesque spots on the North Island, dotted with lush green islands and white sand beaches. On this tour, experience the bay from the water as you set sail on-board a traditional tall ship. Sip a glass of wine and snack on delicious antipasto as you cruise around the inner bay, watch the sunset over the water, and perhaps even help out sailing the ship.

Everything was great! We considered ourselves fortunate that there were only 13 passengers (4 crew) on our two hour Sundowner sail since that perhaps made it more intimate. The best fun was in climbing up the rigging and helping with the sails, encouraged by enthusiastic crew. So nice to be out on the water on such a splendid, beautiful and historic vessel.

Kia ora The Sundowner is a great way to get a taste of what it's like to sail on the Tucker if you don't have a full day. We're thrilled you had so much fun!

There is no finer gig for a band specialising in sea shanties than to be on board the R Tucker Thompson for a sundowner cruise around the Bay of Islands. It was perfect!
The Old Salts band (guitar, mandolin, percussion) had us all singing along, the wind was in the sails, the sea was relatively calm and the bubbles simply had to be poured. What else could you want?

We've done the day cruise before so knew what to expect. It's a lovely old ship and a totally different experience from the many other, modern vessel cruises available in the Bay of Islands. Participation is encouraged and my husband leapt at the chance to sit up on the bowsprit, and climb the rope ladder to help unfurl the sails. My participation involved watching and taking photos while enjoying a glass of wine. A plate of hors d'oeuvre was passed around and shared. As it happened to be a very calm afternoon, we drifted peacefully around the various islands and bays. Lovely friendly crew and just the right number of passengers to get to chat to everyone. Very enjoyable and highly recommended.

Brilliant trip on this beautiful ship. If you want first class luxury, posh WC’s & very comfy seating. Go elsewhere. If you want a taste of a true sailing ship with an amusing ‘sea salt’ traditional Captain & his excellent team pick this. They were all very friendly, helpful & clearly experienced. Visitors were asked to get involved with raising the sails, then actively encouraged to climb the rigging. The drinks & platters served were good & plentiful. We did have perfect weather & a good breeze, perfectly blue skies & sunshine too, so we were lucky. The singing of sea shanties by the Captain & his friends/team was an added & unexpected bonus. Great value for what is delivered. We loved it!

Thank you so much for your kind review and we are delighted you enjoyed the sail with us. We've been luck to have the Old Salts join us on Fridays and it sounds like you were on board then. Yes we are an authentic working tall ship, not a tour boat so we are slightly different to the run of the mill activities. Kia ora.

My wife, 5 year old son and I spent a fantastic 2 hours out on the water, sailing on the R. tucker Thomson. The crew were extremely friendly, welcoming and accommodating.

Thankfully there was a good breeze blowing, so I helped raise the mainsail and we were able to make good headway (proper sailing). It was made clear that we could participate in sailing the ship or sit back and do nothing if we liked. My 5 year old son took the wheel for most of the trip and really enjoyed being captain for the voyage. I climbed the rigging to the top of the mast and great fun was had by all.

I thoroughly recommend this tour.

Kia ora The crew also loves it when there is a good breeze blowing too, it is fun for all! We're very glad you enjoyed your short sail with us, it sounds like your son had a great time playing captain!

We joined Captain Wayne and crew aboard the R Tucker Thomson for a day trip around the Bay of Islands in NZ. The crew were welcoming and friendly and happy to let the land lubbers help out with ropes, steering and general nautical activities. Swimming off the boat while it was moored by one of the islands was delightful. Lunch was tasty and well served and drinks were available at reasonable prices. Altogether a fantastic day - I wish I could go again tomorrow.

This is an unmissable experience. We sailed on New Years Eve from Russell on a beautiful evening. I enjoyed the opportunity to raise the main sail and climb the rigging, fulfilling childhood dreams of piracy while.my wife enjoyed the views and some wine an nibbles on deck. The crew were very friendly and informative. We heartily recommend this cruise ("Me hearties"!)

The musicians aboard made it a lovely experience. Captain Tim was low key but a fine skipper with a sense of humour. The crew were friendly and helpful
The kids enjoyed climbing the rigging and going out on the bow sprit.
It was a gentle breeze and wasn’t loaded with info about the boat or the bay so was just a lazy two hours, sailing.
We loved it.
