- tracelt30 contributionsWaitangi Treaty Grounds is a must do!!!!!!!We had the most amazing time at The Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Our guide was absolutely fantastic he was so knowledgeable, and we learnt so much. This was one of our best experiences we had while on our New Zealand Cruise. I can not recommend this more highly. The cultural concert was also fantastic.Written 20 April 2024
- CortinaGT0 contributionsVery worthwhile doing this.We went here in February 2024, even though Tripadvisor keeps showing the date as January. This is the 3rd time I have had to do this Review. We selected the Experience Pass which was valid for 2 days and included a guided tour and a Cultural Performance. The guided tour provided headsets, so we were easily able to hear the tour guide at all times. Shane was very good and full of information which he explained clearly. The Cultural Performance was excellent and very well presented with photo opportunities with the performers afterwards.Written 31 March 2024
- Culture005044445130 contributionsWarm welcome and wonderful introduction to the Māori culture. My Mum and I came to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to find out more about our ancestors. Shane was an excellent tour guide through the grounds for our guided tour, the group who did the cultural performance were spectacular both after the tour and during the night time Hangi and Concert experience. The Hangi was so great, sitting next to all different people from all over the world learning about this one culture and sharing stories. The team who prepared the Hangi and did all the greetings and blessings were so wonderful and welcoming. I would definitely come back to do this experience again one day.Written 9 March 2024
- 855JohnG0 contributionsVery good guided tour and concertThe guide had a nice relaxed style with a typical Mauri droll sense of humour. The concert was clearly aimed at the tourist but still had real feeling. We had little understanding of the issues surrounding the original treaty but have a much better understanding now. Having a ticketing system which allows you to go in free next day too is a nice touch - we popped back to to check on some facts the following day.Written 7 March 2024
- ChloeMarechal20 contributionsNever to be forgottenWhat an amazing night ! We were immersed in the maori culture. Our excellent guide, guided us through the forest, the rules and customs, the celebrations, the history around us, and the meaning of this delicious hangi. On this night, we discover, we learn, and we connect with strangers I will recommend to anyone coming to waitangi to be part of this experience at least once ! Thank you again for this wonderful night !Written 18 February 2024

- 101judithw0 contributionsA very entertaining afternoon and evening. What a great way to spend an afternoon/evening in Waitangi. We chose the Cultural performance at 3.30pm, the Guided Tour at 4.30pm and the Hāngi and Concert at 6pm. The tour was lead by a young local Māori who had an extensive knowledge of the history of the people and events that have shaped the past, present and future. The guide was entertaining and passed on her knowledge using storytelling. She lead us to Te Whare Rūnanga where we became part of an inspiring pōwhiri (welcome). We were invited to move inside where we were immersed in cultural performance including waiata (songs), poi and a traditional haka (war dance). After the concert we were invited to meet the cultural performers to ask questions and take photos. We then spent some time in the museum before walking up to the cafe for the Hāngi & Concert where we got to sample Māori culture and cuisine. The whole evening was entertaining, from the cook uncovering the food for the hāngi to the challenge and the live performances, and culminating in a very tasty and generous dinner (unlimited food) with fellow travellers. Quote of the evening came from Dane, our host, who was congenial, humorous, and engaging: ‘it’s our story, but it’s also your story’.Written 5 February 2024
- FranckinLeiden0 contributionsMy top visit so far in NZ NI !!!A must visit place if you want to learn something about the history of New Zealand. Heemi our very positive guide told us all about the history of his ancestors. Thank you Heemi for sharing all your knowledge with us. On this grounds the Treaty between the British crown and a large group of Maori tribes was signed. A waka was performed in the sacred Maori house. A great performance to watch! For the rest a beautiful collection of plants and trees. I very much enjoyed watching this all.Written 31 January 2024
- 420owenh0 contributionsGuided tour and cultural show are great!Waitangi is a must see for any tourists travelling to New Zealand, as it is full of history and information. We really enjoyed our guided tour from our guide Dave, who was very informative and friendly, and stuck around for ages at the end to answer questions. We also really liked the cultural show, which was very entertaining and well worth the admission price.Written 28 January 2024
- Tourist3060 contributionsA must doThis was a fantastic insight into NZ history and Māori culture. Our guide Cici was incredibly knowledgeable and brought the trip into modern day focus. The cultural show the highlightWritten 27 January 2024
- staceylI2817RU0 contributionsImportant historyOverall we felt that the museums and the Māori cultural performance were fantastic. The tour guide we had though focused almost exclusively on the colonial aspect of the history and we felt it really missed the balance of the Māori perspective. Highly recommend visiting the grounds overall.Written 24 January 2024

- michelebX2804ZQ0 contributionsEnjoyed every second of my experience!!I'm so glad we got the Combo pass. We went to the Hangi and Concert the first evening, and the next morning returned to take a tour of the museum. It's worth it to do the guided tour. There are amazing stories, legends, and so much information. The views are stunning, the waka is amazing, and the food at the cafe is so delicious!!!Written 13 January 2024

This visit was part of a tour from our cruise ship. From the moment we arrived our guide Richie rushed us around the complex giving our group very little time to see anything in any detail. His attitude left a lot to be desired, at best he had a flippant attitude and seemed to make light or joke about just about everything. He made unnecessary remarks about Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth during the tour together with unnecessary comments about Australians and Americans, I think it was his pathetic attempt at humour. My wife was so annoyed by his manner at the end of the tour she gave him a piece of her mind.
This spoilt our visit to what was beautifully presented garden, buildings and visitor centre. I always like to hear about the local culture but felt short changed on this occasion due to the ‘guide’
When we returned to the coach the driver asked why we were back so soon ? and told us we could go back for another 45 minutes ?? I did say we were rushed around !!

Visited the treaty grounds for several hours and was most impressed with the guide who took us on an hour walk and talk and the dance and song experience. Both showing the healthy and positive culture of the Maori people. Very educational and enjoyable

If you look at other reviews for here it is apparent that most had an enjoyable time.
Not so our party. We unluckily got handed a smug young man (whose name I forget) who continually talked down to us about what happened & contrived to make bad taste jokes as he went along. Our tour director was appalled by the commentary, but was powerless to stop it as we had paid good money to go in. The premises are iconic due to the Treaty of Waitangi being signed there in 1840. Seemingly that was insufficient for our idiotic guide to express.

To understand the history of the Maori people and the complicated relationship with the British a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must. The museum is moving as is the brand new pavilion honoring those who lost their lives in WW. Our guide was a Maori descendant of a major British figure which added a special layer to all the info he imparted. Highlights include the Maori war canoe in which Princess Diana was the first woman to ride And the wood carving demonstration. The finale was the Maori performance- - in their meeting house, which is a wonderful place to explore after the performance. This was the most meaningful experience of our entire trip. It is a living museum that set the stage for the rest of our tour of New Zealand.

Absolutely beautiful area and very interesting and informative, if a tad expensive.
We stood outside the “house” where there are periodic performances and asked if we could go inside.
The lady on the rope said that there is going to be a performance soon, that we didn’t have time for. My husband made a very innocent comment such as “never mind, the show must go on”, with on real meaning or malice attached to it in any way.
The lady on the rope was then very rude by saying, and I quote “ sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, and I hear the English are very good at it”.
We were gobsmacked, we had not been offensive at all.
Firstly, a huge amount of visitors to NZ are British, or English, so she needs to get over herself on that score.
Secondly, she was more than likely English herself a few generations ago, so silly thing to say.
Thirdly, my husband is actually Welsh, so he wasn’t impressed at being called English....
Joking aside though, kind of ruined the trip and her rudeness wrangled with me all day......
The Maori lady who I subsequently spoke to about their performance was very pleasant and helpful.

We had a wonderfully knowledgeable guide taking us around the Treaty grounds. Our ticket was $25 as we are NZ citizens and the ticket included the cultural show and museum too. The large waka used at the Treaty signing celebrations each year were impressive. A definite ‘must see’.

If you wish to understand Mouri culture, this is the place to visit. We were staying in Russell but one ferry a day from there goes directly to Waitangi saving a walk from Paihai. Buy the full ticket - its worth it! Go on a tour so the features of the Treaty Ground are explained and the use of canoes understood. The highlight is the cultural event in the Meeting House where the use of weapons is clearly indicated, the performers really engage with the audience and you can take souvenir photographs afterwards with them. What a day we had!

If you find yourself in this part of the world, you must visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The guided tour takes you to see a huge, historic war canoe; the house where the first British Resident, James Busby, lived and the Maori Meeting House. The guides are really informative, but you don’t actually need a guided tour to see the site, you can make your own way around. The cultural performance by a Maori group is well worth seeing and the museum is first class - and interactive. We spent a whole day there and came away a lot more knowledgeable about NZ history.

Parking is free, but you pay to enter the treaty grounds. I recommend doing the guided tour, get there at least 90minutes before your tour so you can go through the museum. The information in the museum will help with the tour. The show in the meeting house is a bit touristy but still quite good. The views on the grounds are impressive. There is a cafe on site and it is decent and the prices not too bad.

Fantastic. We are Kiwis and found this was excellent in updating our knowledge, explaining from both sides just how bringing two races together bought pressure on both. We spent a day and a half here, walking the grounds, going through the musuem, the Maori Battalion musuem, the cultural performance and found the guide very knowledgeable.
The cafe has very good coffee and the shop has some good items to buy.
I'd definitely rate this as the best experience we have had in BOI
Don't miss it, such a good opportunity to update history narratives and remember the beginnings of our nation.

How close are the grounds to the cruise ship port?
Written 18 August 2019
Hi,
It is 5 min by shuttle service or 20-25 mins walk. You will find an online map for this at visitboi and under cruise ships. I cannot add the link here due to site restrictions.
