About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Tessa26910 contributionsTotal value for moneyThis was a brilliant tour and a great way to see the bay of islands. The staff were friendly and so accommodating. We did the tour with our 8 month baby girl. The island stop was lovely with beautiful views. We made the walk to the lookout with our pram. Definitely a must do for the bay of islands. We hit the jackpot seeing whales, dolphins, a penguin and a couple of seals!Written 14 October 2024
- andreadN1849QQ0 contributionsFab tour - well worth itFantastic tour around the bay of islands to the hole-in-the-rock with a 90 min stop at Otehei Bay ~ would highly recommend. The captain -Taina- was very informative and funny and really added that extra something special…the accompanying staff (Gabby and Matt -we think?) were also very friendly and helpful. During the cruise we saw stingrays, fish and dolphins (who put on a real show for us -amazing). We were unable to go through the hole in the rock due to weather (windy and too rough) but captain edged in as far as was safe to do so and it didn’t dampen the experience for us. We were all fine but some succumbed to the rather choppy waters and those ‘just in case’ bags came in handy - would recommend popping a sea sickness tablet before embarking if unsure whether you’re ok on a boat in rough conditions. The island stopover was good..lovely calm waters for a swim - with kayak/paddle board hire also available..refreshments available at restaurant, and amazing views from the top after an uphill, but not impossibly so, walk. Apologies if we have any of the names wrong - suffice to say all the staff were wonderful. The tour was great and my children and I all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Five stars for sure!Written 8 October 2024
- Sandra v0 contributionsA day well spentA lovely day on the water learning a lot about the history of the area. The crew were helpful and friendly. A day well spent, highly recommend this trip.Written 30 September 2024
- Garry W0 contributionsAn unforgettable afternoon cruiseWe booked this cruise for the afternoon around the Bay of Islands. The weather was perfect. Departing Paihia to Russell, then off to the Hole in the Rock where along the way we experienced a Bryde's Whale, Pacific common dolphins, fur seals, and massive schools of fish. The next stop was lunch and beverages at Otehei Bay, where we fed Snapper at the Jetty, then back to Paihai. Another fantastic experience in NZ with a shout-out to Taira, whose knowledge and humour made the cruise highly memorable and also to Anya and Gigi for spotting dolphins and a whale and taking photos.Written 25 September 2024
- Maps599893658860 contributionsBrilliantWe had a great trip today. We really lucked out with the weather so it was a beautiful journey out to the Hole in the Rock and a lovely lunch stop on the island. We were very lucky to be able to see a whale too but I understand that’s not always possible for every trip. All staff were friendly, pleasant and very welcoming. Special shoutout to our captain who had us laughing from the moment he started talking. I would highly recommend this experience for anyone visiting the Bay of Islands, a truly unforgettable day and memories for a lifetime.Written 21 September 2024
- CheekyJohn0 contributionsHole in the Rock tour not to be missed. Worth the money.Captain was fantastic. Kept tour alive with his banter. We were able to see killer whales, dolphins and seals. Captains boat skills were excellent as he placed the boat just right as we went through the hole in the rock. Boat was very comfortable. You can’t miss this tour.Written 11 September 2024
- Terri W0 contributionsCould not fault this tour to Hole in the Rock, Bay of IslandsThis was an excellent day out on the water. So much to learn about the Bay of Islands and the stories of the area. This information was hunourously and entertainingly told by our Prince of a Captain. We were lucky that oceanic conditions were suitable to cruise through the whole and we had the bonus of seeing a few NZ fur seals. Lunch was well timed with enough time to eat and explore and the meals were very reasonably priced. Sadly we didn’t see dolphins but the company gives a return voucher valid for 12 months .Written 23 August 2024
- BridgetScanlan0 contributionsA great adventureGreat trip out to the islands themselves !! Great skipper and crew and we really appreciated his expertise as well as all his local knowledge . A great dayWritten 11 July 2024
- Passport644496870280 contributionsWell worth doing!!Outstanding half day trip! Exceeded expectations, especially for winter months. The views from the lookout on Roberton Island were incredible. We went through the hole in the rock which was cool. The cafe stopover at Uretiti was a highlight. Would happily spend longer there. We also saw a turtle, little blue penguins, seals, eagle ray and a giant petrel. No dolphins seen on our trip but didn't matter! It's really worth picking a calm sunny day if you can. It really made the day sensational.Written 30 June 2024
- JaneMLondon0 contributionsNice views, good walking on the island stopThe boat picks up from Pahia and then Russell. It was busy but everyone had enough space. The boat crew were great - especially to those who had a bit of sea sickness (the hole in the rock is out of the shelter of the Bay, so the sea there is rougher). Nice views of the Bay and we particularly enjoyed having enough time at the island stop to do an hour's good walk to some of its higher viewpoints (or you could just stop at the cafe there instead). You will need to pay for parking in Pahia as the trip length exceeds the free parking time in the town. If you also want to visit Russell you could get off there on the way back and then catch a ferry back to Pahia later on (paying the one way ferry fare)Written 16 May 2024
- L1038TRleoo0 contributionsAmazing cruise provided by a great company.iThis was an awesome trip with the crew being very knowledgeable and friendly. The scenery is just spectacular. Tiara’s commentary was informative and humorous - and his excellent boat handling skills were very much on display when we came in close to the Hole in the Rock and Bird Rock. We were really lucky and fluked coming across a pod of dolphins which swam and played around the boat. All in all a great experience and would highly recommend this company.Written 1 May 2024
- X4250BJlindaz0 contributionsWonderful experienceEven with the weather against us, it was very rough, we had an amazing time and felt reassured by the professionalism of the staff. We didn't get to go through the hole in the rock but it was still great.Written 4 April 2024
- U5530SRrossm0 contributionsUnique experienceAfter boarding in Paihia, we were taken for a tour around the Bay of Islands, on our way up to the Hole in the Rock. Thankfully for us, the conditions were right for us to go through the Hole twice, which was fantastic. It was a unique experience, made all the better by the knowledgeable team.Written 2 April 2024

- Sharyn R0 contributionsHole in the Rock tourGreat tour! Lucky to have perfect weather and the skipper (can’t remember her name) was brilliant, she was informative and funny and a great operator of such a large vessel! You go girl!! Beautiful place and would love to return one day!Written 3 March 2024

A fantastic day our driver/tour guide Roger was the absolute best! He was knowledgeable and interesting but also knew when to give the bus a “learning break” ie he stopped chatting.
If you think the chatter might be too much empower yourself and bring headphones and some music to zone out too

An excellent variety of activities with good stops on the way for what is a long 11 hour journey. Maybe no commentary for the last hour. That said our driver/ guide was very good offering humour, song and great general knowledge. Lunch was a very nice homemade pie and we enjoyed having the chance to walk along the beach for around 15 minutes. Highly recommended.

Awesome trip. Our driver Wii was awesome. He provided the personal touch with his personality, great commentary, and waiata. The views at Cape Reinga were inspiring and the ride down Ninety Mile beach, and the sandboarding was great

We did the cape Reinga full day tour , what a funfilled day , we had
the perfect weather , the morning tea breaks are a bit too short,
We had the best tour guide name of Barry , was a fantastic person who knew all about history , and many stories, he could answer most of our questions, had a lot of laughs too.. the lunch was nothing special at Tonui lucid cafe . Too rushed. Sand boarding was great, Barry tour guide was encouraging , all people on our bus had great time… thanks Barry you are a legend..

Buzz was our tour guide and like others have said it is along day if coming from a Paihia. Long but worth it. We don’t do tour much, prefer to self guide but this one allowed my husband to let Buzz manage the windy roads. Nice rest for him. Tour takes you to all the sights and the time allotted is just perfect...never felt rushed. 90 mile beach ride longer than expected and really enjoyable....put my feet in the Tasman sea. Well worth it !

Thanks so much for taking the time to write in about your experience! We're really glad you enjoyed our Dune Rider tour. Definitely a long day like you mention - but so much to see, and worth it once you get to Cape Reinga - such a stunning corner of New Zealand 🤩Thanks for choosing Explore!

As visitors to New Zealand and Paihia, we really wanted to visit the most northerly point, Cape Reinga, and we’re glad we did it on this tour. Our driver/guide Barry was the perfect company for the day. His stories really added to the day, and we would to thank him for that.

An amazing trip stopping off along the way at a couple of places. The trip along 90 mile beach was wonderful and watching people sand dune surfing was fun. Then Cape Reinga was spectacular because it was such a gorgeous sunny day. 👍🤩

It was hell not worth nearly 11 hours on a coach. There is nothing good to say about the trip don’t waste your money. We set off just after 7 am and did not arrive back until nearly 7 pm. Food awful and coach even worse

We booked this trip through Book Me. We called into the Explore office the afternoon before to confirm and were told all good to go and pick up was outside our hotel at 8am.
The following morning we were waiting outside our hotel for 20 mins . We rang Explore Group to be told that the tour and been canceled .
Went to their office and was told it was cancelled the previous morning at 10 am , yet we were in their office at 3 pm and it was confirmed that the tour was operating,
We were also told that all tours to Cape Reinga for that day we we not operating . We ended up self driving and when we arrive there was a Dune Runner tour bus there .
We would not book with this company again .

I listed my queries below about a wheelchair etc and if there is a telephone number to ring to talk to someone please.
Written 17 September 2018
Hi there,
Looking to book this for 6 adults in October - one of the adults is elderly - does your vehicle have very steep steps to get up? Would there be space for a wheelchair to be stored so they could get to the lighthouse etc? Could you give a telephone number to ring from Auckland as not getting through with the number listed on this site. Thanks Sue
Written 16 September 2018
I do not have the phone number. There is adequate room to place a wheelchair on the bus.
the very elderly would have no problems.

Hi, If we are arriving by Cruise ship for a day only visit can you pick us up and deliver us back to the Cruise ship port?
Written 24 August 2018
Hello if this is cancelled due to weather do we get our money back ?
Written 17 May 2018
May I check where will the pick up point be if I'm staying at Paihia area?
Are there any free parking near the pick up point?
Written 9 May 2018
Hey Jensen,
jep, just call them and tell them where you're staying in paihia, maybe they can pick you up there. We asked them to pick us up at the copthorne hotel (right behind the bridge, next to the treaty grounds). we parked there for free. If you turn left after the bridge, then on the right side there is free parking space.
have fun on the trip!
