- 373iainl0 contributionsTake the tour, but book direct.Beware when buying through TripAdvisor, I thought we were paying in NZ$, turns out it was US$ - twice the price! Despite the shock currency issue, this tour is a must. The volunteer guides do an awesome job, providing detail, humor and structure to the tour. We learnt so much, and our eyes are now open to detail we would never have realized by our selves. The afternoon tour is longer, which is better, and is less likely to have cruise ship passengers. If you can book direct through the Art Decco Trust, it's a charity and all the income is used to help preserve the buildings. TripAdvisor will obviously take a cut if you book through them.Written 14 March 2025

- amandamY2562TG0 contributionsExcellent tour !Terrific! Loved this Art Deco Vintage Car tour of 1.5 hours recently in Napier. Our driver was very knowledgeable, took us to fabulous places and described the architecture in detail in a light hearted, never boring manner. We went to see buildings we could never have visited on our own. The Art Deco Trust Drivers are volunteers and all the money collected goes to help preserve this charming town. We also got out of the car and went inside some buildings. Highly recommend!Written 4 March 2025

- destinationplanner0 contributionsUnique transfer and tour back to our shipExcellent choice of a little city tour to take us back to our cruise ship instead of standing in line for the bus. Tony was an excellent guide who shared all about The history of Napier and the unique buildings and had a lovely ride in a 1939 Packard right to the door of our ship. Thank you art deco trust for preserving these beautiful buildings and historyWritten 8 February 2025
- O3435EAanns0 contributionsNapier's Architecture, worth an informed walk.Afternoon tour starts with an explanation of Art Deco, very handy to understand before looking at examples of the architecture in the city. A 90min leisurely walk and explanation of examples. Finishes with a short video about the earthquake in 1931 which caused the city to be rebuilt.Written 8 February 2025

- Meta S0 contributionsGreat immersive experienceThis was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Dave was good humoured and entertaining whilst also very informative. We stopped at a number of locations to take in the historical and architectural significance of some of Napier’s finest buildings. Napier town centre is really a sight to behold - a step back in time, and touring in a vintage car makes the whole experience more immersive. Thanks Dave - it was a great trip - keep up the good work.Written 17 January 2025

This is such a great tour.
You have no doubt come to Napier to look at the fabulous Art Deco Buildings and so what better way to find out more about them than to take a tour?
The tours are run by the Art Deco Trust - a volunteer organisation that is all things Art Deco in Napier.
Our guide for the hour was Rose who provided a sparkling commentary on the buildings as we wandered around town for an hour.
Before the tour there is a short film that sets the scene for the tour.
It was all hugely enjoyable and warmly recommended.

August 2023 - Great tour and history in Napier. Tour started with a film presentation in the Art Deco Trust building then we did a walking tour of the CBD area of Napier. Our guide Jane was delightful and a fountain of information. Really unique buildings in Art Deco style architecture and a really worthy effort by the trust for preservation. Plus we were able to visit the beautiful community theater. Highly recommend this tour for fans of history, art, or architecture and there is a current earthquake exhibit at the MGT museum next door .Tour was easily booked online, walking was easy - flat terrain and maybe 2km total, and during the week plenty of parking availability nearby. Good job!

I had read about Napier being the Art Deco Capital of the World before my visit. Nothing, however, could have prepared me for the visual feast that I would come to enjoy.
I booked a walking tour with the Art Deco Trust. A short film before the walk set up the background of how this gem of a city centre came to be created following a terrible earthquake in 1931 which devastated the old town.
Then we had an outstanding guide in Rose, whose passion for and sheer love of the art form and its manifestation in Napier made for an eloquent commentary, beautifully delivered.
It also helped that the organisers had invested in high quality earphones which meant one could hear word Rose delivered.
The buildings were an enchanting mix of various designs and features, all with tweaks and quirks and stories which Rose pointed out enthusiastically. They offered an enchanting blend of beautiful pastel colours, while even the street signs were in Art Deco lettering. The low skyline was simply delightful, contributing to an intimacy so often absent in the big city canyons at the foot of the impressive yet ultimately featureless skyscrapers found in big cities.
Napier is a special and its city centre is simply a conservation triumph second to none.

We were lucky to get space on the 10 am walking tour before needing to catch our bus later in the day. (the previous day was booked out). Helen was our very friendly and knowledgeable guide who showed us some beautiful buildings and told us many interesting stories about the history of Napier. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and our stay in Napier! Thank you from Mark & Lindsay, Cape Town.

This morning walking tour with a guide from the Art Deco Trust was very informative and enjoyable! We learnt so much about Napier! And the Art Deco Trust Building is a must to visit, even if you don't want to book a tour. All the volunteers are dressed up in original Art Deco outfits, absolutely wonderful! And you can purchase high quality souvenirs and art there. We had an absolutely wonderful morning! Highly recommended!!

We did the 2pm walk with Esther through the streets of Napier.
It was an interesting and informative look back on the history of the area. Esther is a local lady full of fun facts and made the walk such an enjoyable afternoon
It was very lucky that we spotted the Art Deco Centre as we were walking along the beautiful Marine Parade. Such a visible and handy location to start our walk from.

Our guide was very knowledgeable & made our Art Deco walk very interesting & informative. Being sunny & warm also helped. Rose was dressed to the era & the contemporary era cars doing tours round Napier knew her too.

Had a great tour of the art deco centre of Napier with Lew today. Lots of detail about the different architectual styles, personal stories and good knowledge. Includes commentary with ear piece and comment on both good and bad building conservation practices. Good film to start all about the context set by the earthquake in 1931.

While we’ve been been to Napier many times, we hadn’t tried the Art Deco tour and we’re so glad we did! we joined the morning walking tour from the Art Deco Centre to find a large group assembled for the introductory talk and video. After this the group was divided into two groups of 12-13 and we headed out with our guides. Ours was knowledgeable, witty and friendly, explaining all the styles of architecture, pointing out little details/local history and answering questions. It was well worth the ticket fee. Highly recommended to get the most out if Napier.

We very much enjoyed this tour guided by Alan who was both enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Until now neither of us have been great fans of Art Deco but now that we have a better understanding of it we see it and enjoy it everywhere. We can highly recommend the tour and the lovely town of Napier.
