Great Friendly Service with No Silly Fees
Really great service, no silly charges for extras (like some other places try to get away with), easy and flexible about return times. Good quality bikes with mudguards. We took ebikes - you could probably get away with a regular bike as Napier is quite flat, but it was nice to rocket along at a good speed with maximum assist. Handy location to start and return to.

      Great Ride
Easy to reserve, great people. Pay attention to trails or you can go in circles. Or download the app Great Rides and access Hawke’s Trail for a play by play of exactly where you are and where to go to follow trails. In all a great time!

      Fabulous Afternoon exploring Napier
Really helpful advice from the guys here. The bikes were excellent and we were given a route to follow with a map of all the trails. Highly recommend them

      Excellent Napier bike rentals
Bikes were excellent and ready to go on arrival. Jan was very helpful on routes and directions. We rented for three days and they kept overnight as no room at our AirBnB. Would absolutely rent here again.

      Great place to rent bikes
We reserved ebikes prior to our NZ cruise. The ebikes were ready and waiting for us. The bikes were in good working order. Staff was very friendly and provided us with maps and suggestions for rides of varying lengths.

Cruise Ship Passengers Received Amazing Service
My wife and I went on the Waterways to Wineries self-guided tour, through Napier City Bike Hire & Tours, in December 2023. We were passengers on a cruise ship with a short stay in Napier, so our goal was to get off the ship, get our bikes, ride one-way from Napier to Church Road winery for a wine tasting, get picked up from the winery, and get back onto the ship -- all in a very tight window of time. Knowing that we had a tight time constraint, we wanted to go with a company that would provide assistance if anything went wrong. Something did go wrong (a flat tire), and we were very happy that we chose Napier City Bike Hire & Tours because of the assistance that they provided. Roughly halfway to the winery -- metaphorically in the middle of nowhere, near the marshes -- I got a flat tire. We phoned Napier City Bike Hire & Tours at the phone number printed on the bike. No one picked up, but we left a message on their machine. Within a minute, we received a call back from them, and they said they would be at the car park near our location within 10 minutes. We walked our bikes to the car park, and Napier City Bike Hire & Tours pulled up in their van right on time. They offered us two choices to help make the rest of our stay in Napier go smoothly. The first choice was that they could give us e-bikes to finish our cycling tour more quickly, and they could pick us up at the winery to get us back to our ship (though we wouldn't have time to do the wine tasting). The second choice was that they could drive us directly to the winery (so we would have time for the tasting, but we would miss the second half of the cycling scenery), and they could pick us up after our tasting to get us back to our ship. (We went with the second choice, but that's not the important point in this review.) What really impressed us was how Napier City Bike Hire & Tours lived up to their promise to provide assistance if something went wrong. They were very conscious of the fact we had a cruise ship to get back to, and gave us multiple options for ways to enjoy the rest of our stay, even when we did get a flat tire. We never felt stressed about getting back to the ship on time, and Napier City Bike Hire & Tours made sure it happened. We give Napier City Bike Hire & Tours our absolute highest recommendation for any cruise ship passengers looking to explore the Napier region for a wine tasting, who need to make sure they'll get back to their ship on time (even if something like a flat tire happens along the way).

      Great experience
First class bikes. Everything worked well, got picked up exactly on time. Absolutely reliable. We picked a brilliant route as well, along the coast. And got picked up in a winery. Excellent finish.

      Excellent way to see Napier
I would highly recommend hiring a bike in Napier , a great way to discover the surroundings without too much effort . We hired the electric bikes which were easy to use even for a first timer . The staff were very helpful and gave us some tips on what to see and do . We hired the 4 hour option but next time I would recommend 5 hours to give you time to explore the wineries. Definitely recommend this company very professional and excellent bikes .. one more tip pre book the electric bike if there is a cruise ship in town .

Two thumbs up for Napier City Bike Hire!
We absolutely loved our day on e-bikes from Napier City Bike Hire! Jan and Phil were very flexible about our reservation when adverse weather threatened our plans - which fortunately never materialized. They were super helpful with suggestions about where to ride and where to stop for a wine tasting and lunch. The e-bikes were like new, rode comfortably, shifted easily, and had great storage for water, a layer, maps, etc. We rode over 40km around Napier and had a perfect day. We highly recommend Napier City Bikes!

Will do it again for sure
We loved our bike trip although my in-laws had a couple of small accidents due to having not been on bicycles for decades. Dave was super helpful, he got us the right bikes and responded to our queries promptly. Thank you Dave for your kind help to pick us up from the winery.

      Would do it again, but...
The bikes are pretty good, but are starting to look tired. The pannier leans forward too much and the phone compartment is too small to accommodate newer phones. My bell was missing, my partner's bike creaked changing gears and we got one bike lock for two bikes. We hired the 'Cushy' bikes at $45 for 8 hours (which still feels steep, but that's $5/hour), and the seats aren't all that cushy! If you're expecting a seat with springs then you're going to be disappointed. The guy who served us in the morning wasn't that friendly, but the woman we returned the bikes to in the evening was. All this said, Napier and Hastings are totally set up for bike riding! The recent cyclone has put some paths out of order, but there are some great paths, lots of cafes and everyone says hello!

      Booked from cruise ship
The shop is directly across from the iCentre, which makes it very convenient when coming off the cruise ship. The ebikes were ready for us, as we booked ahead online. Newer bikes that were well tuned and worked great. Beautiful city to tour around .

      Great ebike ride.
Very good ebikes. Easy pick up experience. Helpful staff. Just did an easy ride for kms along the seafront. Next time we will be more adventurous.

We rented bikes two days and took two separate routes. Each was beautiful and interesting and we tried five wineries and truly enjoyed. Have to say that, after a long and hot ride, the folks at Elephant Hill were a bit too snobby and would not make room for us for a tasting, even though the place was huge and only a few people were there. The folks in the shop were a bit less than friendly, however the overall experience was great.

My sister and I booked the Waterways to Wineries bike tour for our New Year’s Day treat - and what a treat it was! Firstly, we only booked a day ahead and they were still able to organise a lunch booking for us at busy Mission Estate. So grateful! The map was easy to read and the bike seats were already set to our heights. The ride was flat the whole way and so beautiful! I particularly enjoyed the wetlands area. My sister hadn’t been on a bike for a while so was a bit nervous and it was perfect for her. Napier has done a great job of the cycle ways-you feel very safe. We were running late for our lunch booking and called ahead but it wasn’t a problem at all. Mission Estate was beautiful. The food was delicious and service was top notch. We did our wine tasting at Church Rd after lunch and loved it. Came home with a few bottles after enjoying more top notch hospitality, a cheese platter and more wine! You can ride your bike back but we opted for the ride home as it was pretty hot, seeing as we were the only cyclists we were kindly dropped off at our motel. Thank you for an amazing experience. We’ll definitely be back again and highly recommend!

Thank you for your review and great you hear you enjoyed the Waterways to Wineries ride - it is one of our favourites too. And taking the shuttle back means that you can just relax and enjoy your lunch and the wonderful wine on offer at the two lovely wineries :-).

A lovely day out on good bikes to some excellent wineries and having the minibus to pick us up was most welcome. Downside is the route includes a section going through an industrial area but after that it is lovely and the cycle path is good. Be aware though of timings. The company suggested lunch at the Hyyge Cafe, but after 2.5 hours we'd only reached the first winery, so you need to be a good and regular cyclist to do that.

We picked up our bikes and map and we were off. What an amazing experience. It was great to bike at our own pace and the weather couldn't be better. The only thing I would add is that the map is not very clear when you get into town. We had to ask a few folks how to get to the wineries. As a result, we missed the first winery in town but were able to get to the last two without a problem. The wine was excellent, the views were spectacular. Took lots of pictures. Only recommendation I have is to provide better instructions on the map once you get into town and the bike trail ends. Ended the day with a perfect bottle of wine and appetizers at Elephant Hills.

We were in Napier for a conference so thought we would book a bike at the last minute - not a great idea leaving this til the last minute when a cruise ship is in port! But Napier Bikes were superb! We decided on the self guided tour - mainly because it was available and we booked online the night before (easy online booking system). We arrived in the shop 15mins early and despite being busy, we were warmly welcomed and soon had our helmets, bikes and route map all sorted out (thanks Kim!). The route down the coast is fantastic! Off road cycle track that is a combination of concrete and lime paths, so we felt pretty safe throughout the whole journey.
We stopped in Clive for a coffee at Zeppelin cafe (perfect point for our first break) then off we went along the coast till we got to wineries. The three wineries (Elephant Hill, Clearview and Te Awanga) are a hop skip and a jump from each other. As Napier Biles we’re picking us up at the end of the day at Elephant Hill, we left this winery as our last stop. We stopped at Clearview for tastings then cycled to Clifton for lunch, then Te Awanga then Elephant Hill.
This was nearly 40km of cycling so take the whole day to do this so as not to rush (we started at 9:30am and by 3pm we were ready to be picked up at the winery so didn’t have to rush)
Great day, great value, great service!!

We booked this trip online with Napier Bike Hires 2 days before our cruise stopped in Napier. Accessing the shop was easy since the Cruise Port offered a shuttle that stops right across the shop on Marine Parade rd.
As we checked in (they already had our bikes ready), they gave us bike helmets & bags, maps & instructions to get to the wineries. Very friendly & useful customer service! You can fill your water bottles there as well.
Most of the ride is on a coastal bike pathway so no need to deal with cars except on very few streets.
    * PAY ATTENTION TO THE DEDICATED BIKE & PEDESTRIAN UNDERPASSES TO AVOID CROSSING THE HIGHWAYS! Follow the signs that point to CLIVE, then TE AWANGA, but you will find the wineries just before TE AWANGA town. Bring water & sunblock.
It is a 15 miles bike ride each way to Elephant Hill winery, the first of the three wineries nearby.
At Elephant Hill winery you will find an indoor restaurant and an outdoors wine testing bar. There is plenty indoor & outdoor seating to enjoy the views. Nice and friendly service, some small plates & snacks available as well.
Be aware that the ride back is harder since you have to push against the headwinds. If you are not an experienced cyclist you might want to upgrade to an E-bike. The coastal views are beautiful near the canals. Just follow the bike path.
Check-out was quick & easy. We had a very nice ride. I rated 4 stars because being an experienced cyclist in Northern California this ride was too easy!

A real shame. As a very experienced cyclist I hired a bike to for the winery tour. In short, a ramshackle of a bike.

Gears were un-responsive - would change 20 seconds after selecting.
Gears slipping and missing - once in a gear they would slip and miss. Almost came off when it slipped going up hill.
Seat rotating in down tube - not good when you are turning to check for traffic.

But the best was 10 minutes into the cycle, being called to ask if I’d put the seat up! Apparently the owner of the bike shop had seen me and thought I’d extended the seat which I hadn’t (I understand seat extension limits)!!!

On return, and reporting of the faults I felt the staff response was a little dismissive. Suggested (to my wife) I wasn’t peddling hard enough and that was why the chain was slipping! I’ve only been cycling for 45 ish years) and maintaining my own bike for 15 years... a shame when you try to blame the customer.

Also a shame as it’s been the only negative experience in New Zealand. A great place to visit.

I recommend you look elsewhere for a bike rental.

Hi Topjock0 Thank you for taking the time to post a review and we are sorry that you found your bike and our subsequent response unsatisfactory. Unfortunately we were completely unaware of any concerns with your bike until you and your wife returned from your ride, clearly very very unhappy. Had we been aware, then we would have remedied this for you with minimal disruption to your ride. All of our customers are advised that should they encounter any issue with their bike to simply call us and we will rectify the situation - usually with either advice over the phone or with a very quick bike swap. Our bikes are all new or near new but being mechanical things ridden by a large variety of people, from time to time a mechanical issue or a puncture can occur in spite of our best endeavours. Being a large and busy store, we always have resources on hand to deal with the unexpected, and we know all the quick access points around the trails which enables us to meet you with a replacement bike with minimal disruption to your ride should this be necessary. However, if we do not know there is an issue, we can’t address it. So once again our apologies that you did not have the experience that you and we expected, and we trust that you enjoy the rest of your travels in NZ.

We hired bikes from Napier City bike hire and they couldn't have been more helpful. They got us on the road very quickly and gave us every confidence in both the bikes and 38 km route we were going to follow. The bikes (one standard, one electric) were of the highest quality.
