About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Janine C0 contributionsLove cycling in Hawkes BayThank you Karen and Roger - great bikes and 3 wonderful days cycling in Hawkes Bay. The trails are almost all off-road and excellent surfaces. Lots of good places for coffee and food.Written 20 March 2024
- Munro19840 contributionsGreat bikes and great serviceExcellent bikes. Super friendly and helpful girl in the shop. We did the water trail which was stunning. Went all the way to Clifton. Beautiful views at Cape Kidnappers. Lovely lunch at the cafe in Clifton recommended by the girl.Written 12 February 2024
- Gary6778700 contributionsTakaro top team - Beautiful Hawkes BayKaren, Riley and the whole team are very efficient and helpful. They know the trails, hotels, restaurants, vineyards and have an excellent range of quality “E” and Standard bikes. Friendly people who were happy to work in with various changes made to bikes and dates etc. We have travelled throughout New Zealand hiring bikes and going on various self guided tours. The Takaro team are the best. Throughout Hawkes Bay we found the locals to be incredibly friendly and helpful. Don’t let the media put you off around respective stories (and old photos) about the damage done with storms and flooding . Yes of course it has been devastating for the region, all the more reason to visit and support the local businesses. The recovery is continuing. Almost all of the cycles trails are open and very safe to use.Written 8 January 2024
- Quest3565860 contributionsSelf guided clear view winery tripFantastic service. We loved it so much we came back for a second day! We’ll be back again! Thanks Karen for the pick up.Written 1 October 2023
- Onbusiness2550600 contributionsThe Best! Gourmet Food and Wine Guided Tour - Hawkes BayIt’s no surprise that Takaro Tours consistently rates 5 stars! Karen has everything organised like a superstar. The trip was stress free and Karen was so accommodating and friendly. Roger with guides Pam and Riley were great, they were knowledgeable, welcoming and just all round an awesome team. These guys know their stuff! From recommendations for great places to eat and visit locally as well as a guided tour that was showed us all the Bay had to offer. So many highlights, from stunning scenery, feeling the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces as we immersed ourselves in nature. The e-bikes were perfect, so much so, I now want one for home! Can’t recommend the team at Takaro Tours highly enough. We would love to come again and bring our friends, we know they’d love it!Written 22 April 2023
- Guide5916840 contributionsFabulousWe did a 6 day guided cycling tour with Takaro Trails. Roger and Karen were wonderful, friendly hosts who organised everything including airport transfers, meal bookings or suggestions, and winery visits. The good quality e-bikes worked well and were comfortable. The cycleways are safe and well maintained. We cycled through vineyards, alongside apple orchards and corn fields, along the coast and through wetlands and the countryside. The food and winery choices were outstanding. Thank you Karen and Roger, Anna, Pam and Clare, what a fabulous team!Written 30 March 2023
- Voyage037279459110 contributionsOutstanding 6 day guided small group e-cycling tour with wine tastings and gourmet food experiencesI travelled with a friend as part of a 6 day guided e-cycling tour with Takaro Trails- what a well run and seamless experience it was. From the warm welcome on arrival at Napier airport, all our transfers, bookings made at fabulous local restaurants and recommendations for places to eat on free evenings. Karen and Roger are very accommodating, the wineries visited were great, the included tours very interesting. The eating options generally in Napier and Havelock North are outstanding. We stayed an extra day after the tour was completed and were able to extend the hire of our bikes for that time which made local exploring so much easier. Can’t recommend this experience and this company highly enough.Written 30 March 2023
- Janine C0 contributionsCycling in Hawkes Bay againKaren provides a warm welcome and along with bikes that were right for each of us talked us through the options in Hawkes Bay to cycle after cyclone Gabrielle. Just a month has gone by and while you can’t go along a couple of routes just about everything else is fine. We’ve cycle around Taradale and to the Hastings Sunday farmers market and Havelock North, bought dried figs at the the figgery. Cafes are open and there are great spots to sit and chat over coffee. Today we are off to Clifton to lunch. There are also some amazing sights - the smell of onions washed up at a bridge, twisted metal cycleway hoops and a train line hanging midair without any support. Along with the beauty of hawkes bay. Great to be here again and enjoying the outdoors.Written 19 March 2023
- Kim B0 contributionsBest Winery and Bike tour!Highly recommend Takaro e-bike tour. We did the Cruise ship 4 hr. tour; we had a great day! Bikes were in excellent condition. We met Roger at the i-site, and he gave us instructions and a safety briefing. Then we were off on a nice ride to the winery. Karen was quick with any email question that I had. I would definitely book with them again!Written 16 December 2022
- Kymo28310 contributionsThe best!I can’t recommend Takaro trails enough! Karen was incredibly helpful in coordinating our day and even accommodated a custom drop off and pick up from our accommodation. Blake was very helpful in showing us the bikes and providing fantastic winery and lunch recommendations! They both went above and beyond in making our winery day perfect!Written 8 December 2022
- cliffy_tsv0 contributionsFun afternoon ride in NapierGreat friendly service. Fun ride starting with a beer and some lunch before heading down to some wineries in beautiful weather. Riding was nice and easy on the e-bikes which were all in really good condition. Highly recommend.Written 20 October 2022
- Carol C0 contributionsGreat fun!Lovely staff; Tony was particularly helpful. The quality of the bike was great which led to a mellow experience. Thank you!Written 30 September 2022
- Wellykiwis0 contributionsTakaro a must doVisited Napier on Queens Memorial weekend so everything was closed. However hired a ladies stepthrough e-bike and did our own thing. Rode to Crab farm and back through farm and wetlands. Bike was great, easy, comfortable and well maintained. Couldn't fault service. Thanks guys.Written 26 September 2022
- BD8160 contributionsNapier Westshore and Wetlands.Rang Roger only to find they were closed but, no problem, Roger got us set up with three bikes and recommended the Westshore and wetlands ride. Absolutely brilliant. Drop off no problem. Locks provided, key drop and all day parking just across the road.Written 25 April 2022
- donnajohnson80 contributionsGreat day but better sign posts neededWe managed to complete the 52 km loop in 6 hours. We cycled quite a long way off the route because the sign posts were not very clear and for that reason I’m not giving 5 out of 5. Otherwise apart from some sore muscles we had a wonderful day.Written 11 April 2022

We did a private Cape e-bike & Winery tour with Roger and had a terrific time from start to finish. We did a fun 15k ride along the shore and through some farmland before stopping for a tasting at Black Barn, lunch/tasting at Craggy Range and a tasting at Te Mata. It was a great combination of stops and Roger was engaging and knowledgeable. We highly recommend this adventure if you are visiting the Hawke’s Bay/Napier area. Note: There was some Cyclone Gabrielle damage in the area but Napier and all of its residents and businesses are open and welcoming guests.

Did an e-bike tour with my wife and 15 year old daughter. We got stunning weather which helped. The scenery is really pretty. It was well-organised and the staff were friendly. The bikes were easy to ride (I'm a mediocre cyclist at best!) and were great when there were hills or strong headwinds. We took a "detour" to Craggy Range vineyard where we stopped for wine tasting. Didn't make any other stops and got to the final destination with an hour to spare for a chilled late lunch of delicious pizza (GF options available) on the lawn ahead of a 4pm pickup. The cycle paths were good and there's very little time spent travelling on actual roads (& mostly where the streets are very quiet). Recommended. :)

Tony, Roger & Karen were amazing. Coming down to celebrate a beautiful friends hens do just after lockdown, we wanted to ensure we were adhering to Covid guidelines. The team were awesome and made us feel very at ease with the process, on time & great to communicate with. Thank you!!

Friendly, helpful team backed up by great quality bikes. I'd not booked and turned up to enquire about a tour minutes before the day's tour was about to set off. A quick bit of admin, dash back to my digs to change into something more suitable and I was off. Thank you Tony and team for looking after me.

We had the best day with Takaro Trails. Great communication throughout the day and friendly service. Such a great way to experience all the wineries in Hawkes Bay, even in winter. Book them, you won’t be disappointed!

We had booked a Havelock winery cycle tour with Takaro Trails and cancelled very late due to heavy rains. There is no cancellation fee with this company and communication with Jenny Ryan in customer service was first rate.
Obviously we did not experience the cycle tour but I can vouch for the integrity of this tour operator.

Hired bikes for a day tour around local vineyards. Easy to arrange and good value. Roger collected us on time from our campsite, and our bikes were already in the back of the van ready to go (correctly sized as they ask for height when booking). He drove us to the first vineyard, the lovely Black Barn, set us up with the bikes, helmets and a map and off we went. Bikes of really good quality, with large panniers for wine purchases. Visited two vineyards plus the cheese shop for a delicious tasting, then cycled an easy 16km, taking just over an hour, to two more vineyards. Could have gone on further if we’d spent less time drinking and eating cheese, but we were happy with our day. Roger then collected us around 3.45 from the last vineyard and took us back to the campsite. Overall, a great day out.
