About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- D3975ESnataliaa0 contributionsVery nice!!Very communicative and helpful guide. I went on 2 tours with the same company with different guides/drivers and I loved both. Spacious and comfortable cars and they offer water and snacks. I loved the experience and I recommend it!Written 24 January 2025
- kolbykloo0 contributionsThe Perfect Day Trip from AucklandThis was a great way to fit a lot in to one day! Our guide Brendan was very friendly and knowledgeable. Both excursion (Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves) we're really cool and worth it. The bus ride did get warm but it was a hot day. Water, snacks, and bathroom breaks were all provided which was nice. Highly recommend!Written 23 January 2025
- jessalynp20250 contributionsEpic tour momentSuch a wonderful experience! The bus had easy pickups from well established hotels with easy pick up times. Lots of stops for food and toilet breaks and other fun things like emu feeding. Our tour guide Brendan was so funny and had great advice and information on everything and more. Lots of enjoyable moments and I would absolutely recommend booking with them! Thank you guys for the great time!Written 23 January 2025
- Roving409400344000 contributionsBest way to see Hobbiton and glowworm caves from AucklandIt makes for a very long day, but this is absolutely the best way to see Hobbiton and the glowworm caves. The driver gets you there, and then each organization takes you on its own tour. We had time for a leisurely lunch and an ice cream stop on the way home. Just be prepared for the long day of almost 7 hours in the van. I will say that the van was extremely bumpy in the back as well so there's that to consider. I would do it again.Written 23 January 2025
- Helen_d_travels0 contributionsMaking memories with Cheeky Kiwi TravelsFantastic tour - great way to see the beautiful north of New Zealand! Tour guide John was very knowledgable and great company. We had some amazing experiences without the tour feeling too packed. Highlight was the Kauri museum and the boat trip.Written 22 January 2025
- Deborah T0 contributionsLoved the trip to Hobbiton and the CavesGreat tour. Professional and friendly guide, Grant. He was personable, confident , experienced and made every bit of the tour comfortable and easy! Got the tickets, prepared us for what would happen next, where to meet, where everything was located, etc. He gave informative talks interspersed through the day, but not too Much information. Let us know where and when to meet, and made the entire day go smoothly. The group was lovely, fun to interact with some of the passengers from all over who were traveling alone, and with the groups and couples. Everyone was respectful, ready for pickup and ready at each designated time, so made the group aspect easy and pleasant. We loved Hobbiton and the glow worm caves also exceeded our expectations- both great experiences!!Written 22 January 2025
- LisaLisa18690 contributionsGreat service.Great communication before the trip. Prompt pick up. The guide, Grant, was lovely and very informative. Hobbiton is a must see, even if you aren't a Lord of the Rings fan.Written 22 January 2025
- joycepZ6649HF0 contributionsAmazing experienceThe ride from to the movie set was smooth. Our tour guide Matt was informative through and through about Auckland and the Hobbiton as well. Even it was raining the day we went, it didnt deter us enjoying the Lord of the rings experience. Its a 10/10 experience and would go back to with Cheeky Kiwi Travel to hobbiton, to the shire.Written 22 January 2025
- freespirit88720230 contributionsGreat all day tour!Fantastic, Wotomo glow worm caves was a magical experience. Rotorua and Te Puia wonderful with some Kiwi Birds! Convenient tour from Auckland to Wotomo Glow worm caves and Te Puia Rotorua. All day tour.Written 22 January 2025
- MaryBashkim0 contributionsVery extended drive from AucklandThe Waitomo glow work cave tour was excellent. The Māori cultural center was interesting. The driver was a bit boring and didn’t manage our visit to the cultural center as well as we could have. The overall experience I would go to the caves and skip the 13 hour day most of it driving through farmlandWritten 22 January 2025
- merylglick0 contributionsLoved Hobbiton!Hobbiton venue is great - their tour was interesting &informative. Would have liked guide to narrate coming and going!Written 21 January 2025
- LYNETTE C0 contributionsBest day of our NZ trip. Our driver John was very passionate about his job and extremely informative. We had the best day of our 10-day holiday today in NZ. We highly recommend this day trip with Cheeky Kiwi Tours.Written 21 January 2025

- monikan4700 contributionsTiring and doubtful experienceDistressed driver/guide, quality vehicle, you spend like 9 hours on the way, no wow experience. We were unlucky with our "guide". Erine was highly distressed and we felt like rather getting out of the vehicle for safety doubts first three hours. Very disorganised person with some emotional overload tired from 3 days in vehicle in the row. You are rushed whole day to get somewhere on time. Then you somehow manage and you are quite disappointed, I am not sure whether you want to spend a day like this. Imagine like 9 hours spending in the vehicle (high quality - biggest upside) with driver who says highly non interesting things and you feel unsafe first three of hours of the ride. Then you arrive to your first tour, which is super quick, guide is not very interested and the worms are not that well visible as you expected - pictures are absolutely not corresponding with what you will see!!! Glowworms are interesting but I understand that so many people are disappointed and it's very questionable whether it's worth the trip. After that you drive 3 hours to another destination (you don't receive any valuable instruction or information from your driver) and you are rushed for another tour, which main part is standing and listening how mauri creates ornaments from various materials - not what I came for!!! Afterthat from my perspective highlights of the tour - we were able so have a glimpse on kiwi chick - amazing but not all from the group had this opportunity and te puia short experience. After one hour standing with mauri ornaments I would be happy to skip the nature experience and rather stayed at the hotel. Overall the whole experience is quite questionable. It depends what you want, what is your schedule etc. If you are staying short time and you want to get a feeling of New Zealand from the car, it's perfectly fine! If you are interested in nature, expecting some wow experience, I'd rather warn you, you may be disappointed. Very rushed day spent in a car with not enough experience.Written 21 January 2025
- Ourarka0 contributionsGreat day with a great guide (Arani)!!This is a great day out - the Waitomo caves are beautiful and the geothermal park equally incredible. It is a long day, with quite a lot of driving (not helped by a motorway closure!) but totally worth it in my opinion. Both places have a guided tour and are expertly run with Cheeky Kiwi already ‘booked’ for a time slot so everything feels smooth and organised. Food stops are at a premium due to how busy the day is, so I’d advise having some ‘backup’ snacks with you ……. though the traffic is probably the ultimate decider in how long you get for breakfast and lunch!! If you’re lucky enough to get Arani as your guide, then you really lucked out! Great fun, down to earth, flexible and clearly passionate about her people and country, she’ll mak a great day even better!!!Written 21 January 2025

We had a wonderful day. Grant, our driver and guide was a lovely and knowledgeable man who took the time to walk around Te Puia with us and explain what we were seeing. The Maori cultural show and the hangi lunch gave us better appreciation of Maori life. This tour was exactly right for us! I highly recommend it.

Overall good tour. We were unlucky with the weather. It was pouring cats and dogs while we were at the Māori culture center. However, we still had fun. The geyser went off several times and we got plenty time for pictures. It was nice to see the kiwi bird as I didn’t have time to visit the zoo. I signed up the dog and sheep show. As an animal lover and city dweller, I really enjoyed the show and learned a lot about the sheep dogs and sheep. It was fun and a good way to spend time indoors during a storm. The tour organizer could’ve done better for arranging hotel pickups. We circling the downtown area for quite a bit.

I had a fantastic experience with Cheeky Kiwi Travel. Cheekiest Michael, our guide, was incredibly informative and helpful, especially attentive to the couple traveling with children. The entire tour was well-paced, allowing us plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed. It was a truly relaxing and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend Cheeky Kiwi Travel for anyone looking for a well-organized and stress-free tour!”

the Maori cultural center was the number one thing i wanted to do in New Zealand. the cultural dance and tour were great the lunch was good. However Checky Kiwi your transport was terrible. riding 8 plus hours with your knees wedged against the seat in front is not good. it wasn't only my seat (and i changed) everyone had a cramped seat. too many seats were wedged too close together for a comfortable ride which is important on such a long day.

Surprising. The Mercedes 519 are built for 20, we remove some of the seats put in a cargo area and spread the seats to accommodate 16 only and the seats are larger than European standard. We have many many many reviews complimenting the buses as being modern, comfortable and clean. Our Mercedes are very nice however it is a mini bus. If you are looking for the very large coaches a small group tour is not recommended.

Our guide Ken was great and thorough. I booked a very last minute solo trip and was picked up on time at SkyCity. I opted to do optional activities because I wanted to get a feel of what I wanted to do once Im there. I decided to do Te Puia per Ken's recommendation. It was great and very educational, saw some kiwi birds and geysers. I also did the extra show at the end of tour which is the Maori Haka dance, it has a very strong spirit and it was absolutely enjoyable to watch. I didn't want to do other activities after that and had a couple of hours to kill before the tour bus goes back to Auckland so I decided to be dropped off Polynesian Spa and dipped in the hot springs. If this is not for you, Ken will definitely give you more recommendations that will suit your needs. If you don't want to do anything but explore the city that is fine too, just be aware that the bus do not head back till about 3:30pm so you will have to wait around for others to finish their activities till then. The first drop is at Te Puia you will be picked up from there at 1pm to be taken to next activity selected.

This was a last minute trip and the staff did a great job accommodating me for this amazing experience. Michael did an awesome job getting us to Rotorua and I gained a lot of knowledge about the places we visited with many interesting facts throughout the journey. I opted for Te Puia to visit the geysers, kiwi birds, and learned about the Māori culture then ended with 2 hours of rest and relaxation at the Polynesian Spa overlooking Lake Rotorua. Hope to make it back one day to enjoy their South Island tour!

Bus and driver were fine. A few nice lookout spots on the way. And driver took a few photos of group.
But this isn't a tour...You can add on activities, but be advised for those activities, like Waiotapu, you are on your own ( even though guided tours are available).
We were told the day before our tour that the spa option we chose wasn't available...
Morning of tour, we walked (at 6am) to pickup spot. Bus was over 20min late. Upon arrival at geothermal site, saw that we had missed a daily geyser by 15 min. 15 min! You do the math. We continued on with a Self-Guided tour.
Next location Te Puia Maori Village. Over sized tour (20/30) and the guide was reciting a memorized script, did literal jump-scares to people in the dark kiwi sanctuary, was not waiting for older/slower people, left several of us without any indication as to which way to get to the exit. And worst part... no cultural song/dance etc... found out that is only offered in the earlier tour (huh?).
A once in a lifetime trip and we felt let down in many ways. We did a Self-Guided tour of geothermal location, and got a lousy tour of te puia.

Kia ora – thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Our Rotorua Highlights tour is designed to offer flexibility so guests can choose from a range of amazing attractions, but we’re truly sorry that your experience didn’t meet expectations, especially during such an important trip.
We aim to provide a reliable pick-up service for all guests, and while we regret the delay on your tour, we're glad our operations team was able to keep you updated with the guide’s ETA.
Regarding the Polynesian Spa, it’s unfortunate that it was closed for renovations, and we understand the disappointment this caused. We also appreciate your feedback on Waiotapu and Te Puia. We’ll be reviewing these concerns with our team and passing on your comments to the attractions, as we want to ensure that all our guests have the best possible experience.
It’s worth mentioning that Lady Knox geyser is not part of our tour itinerary, as the timing of our schedule doesn’t always allow us to be there in time to see it.
Please know that your feedback is invaluable to us, and we’re always striving to improve. If you ever choose to explore more of New Zealand with us, we’d love the opportunity to provide you with a better experience.
Nga mihi – safe travels, and thank you again for your honesty.

It was an amazing journey from Auckland to those natural wonders and back, our tour guide was really helpful and knowledgeable about all the places we’ve been to, from small trivia to NZ’s history.
And we’re lucky all people in our group were really great too, another guide said we were the “boring group” but by the way things were, he didn’t get lucky to be our guide!
Highly recommend this tour, and if you go, be talkative, kind and interact with others of your group, you’ll “never” see them again :)

Our Tour guide Grant was a lovely man and an excellent tour guide. He was very informative and made the day fun while ensuring that everyone's needs were accommodated. There was plenty of time at Wai-o-tapu & Te Puia aswell as a lovely hangi buffet lunch overlooking the geyser Pohutu. Grant also made sure we arrived at Pohutu with plenty of time to watch it erupt. Lovely views of Lake Rotorua on the return trip too. I would highly recommend this tour.
