Fantastic day! Even though the day is long, our guide was awesome and had great planned stops along the way for coffee, bathroom breaks and more. Well organized with prompt communication prior to our tour day. Definitely would recommend.

This is the tour group to pick for Hobbiton.
I am so glad I picked the Cheeky Kiwi tour. The small tour size really enhanced the experience. Our guide Grant was knowledgeable and friendly. We got an equally small tour size once at Hobbiton. I recommend wholeheartedly. This was the highlight of my small stay in Auckland.

        Great experience !
I did the tour starting from Auckland and including the hobbiton movie set and the te puia tour. The guide (Greg) did a great job and was a big factor in this tour being an awesome experience. He made everyone welcome and took the time to discuss with everyone. He also told us some of his best stories about rotorua, the hobbiton movie set as well as New Zealand more generally. He also taught us some words in Māori which I thought was great. Even as a solo traveller it was great to take the tour as the guide took the time to have a chat. The bus was overall comfortable and far from overbooked with plenty of space for everyone. I recommend this tour as the visit of hobbiton and te puia were great too (different companies of course but worth the visit, I’ll make sure to leave a comment to them too) Perhaps next time I’ll come back for the gloworm cave tour ! This tour was really worth the money!

        Unique Experience
First time in New Zealand & we wanted to see something unique. We certainly did! The glowworms can only be seen in 3 locations around the world. Our guide (I can not remember his name but he joked that he looked like Danny DeVito!) was absolutely fabulous & very informative of the area. The geothermal springs were incredible. Even got to see one erupt! Again, Mimi (I think that was her name.😬 She joked that she was the guide that talked the most!) was so amazing when talking about her home. I loved her final blessing for our group! Then there was John from Cheeky Kiwi tours! He made us laugh, shared interesting facts about New Zealand & facts of our own countries! He went the extra mile by making a group WhatsApp to share his photo & links from our excursion. Even shared his Spotify playlist! Overall a great guide!! Would highly recommend this trip!

Mixed Experience Exploring Waitomo Caves and Te Puia Geothermal Area
We recently visited the Waitomo caves and Te Puia geothermal area. Our tour guide, Huzefa, provided a generally positive experience. However, it would have been beneficial if he had given us a specific time to return to the van instead of just suggesting to come back in 15 minutes or so. Despite this, he was knowledgeable and his driving was reliable. And we met two beautiful ostriches on the way. As for the Waitomo caves, our experience was somewhat underwhelming. The boat ride inside the cave lasted barely 20 minutes, and it felt like we were just circling around the same area. We learned that longer cave rides are available in other regions, and we think those might offer a more satisfying experience.

In addition to Hobbiton and Waitomo (which were beautiful other-worldly experiences), the tour guide was excellent. He was engaging and really cared about giving us a worthwhile experience. I recommend this tour.

        Well organized tour
Our tourguide, Grant was the best. Kind, funny and extremely prepared with facts and trivia. There were no delays, the tour was very well-organized, allowing enough time to watch the two attractions and we also had sufficient 10-15 min breaks during the trip to grab breakfast and have a quick lunch. The van was also comfortable. Thanks Grant and Cheeky Kiwi for this memorable day!

        Should consider it.
Had a really good experience on this tour. Hobbiton was awesome, Caves were just okay (I had been there before - 50 years ago, and seemed to remember them as more impressive). Thought that maybe we would think the reverse but not so. long day so be prepared for some seat time. Got to see a lot of pretty country.

Excellent but be prepared for a long day with a lot of time on the bus
The caves and Te Puia were excellent and well worth visiting. But we thought was a very long journey (more than 13 hours) and we did not like the location chosen for lunch (basically a food truck with limited options). We also found some aspects of the tour itself a bit unusual

Wonderful trip, great hosting especially by driver cum guide Greg Leneham. He made sure our trip was conducted efficiently and interestingly. He was caring, punctual and jovial and added value to the tour. The journey itself was comfortable and the experience inside the cave was sublime

While not even a great fan of the Hobbit movies and looking for something to do in Aukland, this turned out to be an amazinly fun and interesting day trip. The drive to the movie set was interseting and fun because of the driver/guidr "Lance" who added much humor and local color during the 2 hour drive to Hobbiton as well as the return trip. The movie set was a spectacular attraction and the assigned guide for a manageble sized group was knowlegeable and pleasant. The cold local brew at the tour end was welcomed, and the souvenier shop contained better selections than any store we visited in Aukland. Just a great day!

I cannot recommend this tour enough. Having a smaller group (15 of us in total) made this experience so much more worthwhile and was well worth the cost. Our driver Don was incredibly personable and took the time to share the history of the areas we were driving through - he even sang some songs for us! He also made an effort to get to know all of us (and had us introduce ourselves at the beginning of the drive) so by the time we all left our group had connected.

Thank you Don and Cheeky Kiwi for a great experience!

The drive time from Auckland to Matamata, the location of the Hobbiton movie set, is more than 2 hours each way. So, of the 8-hour tour day more than half will be spent in a mini-van with up to 16 additional tourists.

Our driver John of Cheeky Kiwi Travel entertained us throughout the drive by introducing himself and asking everyone else to introduce themselves, playing music, discussing the area history, telling us about the movie set, asking open-ended questions and more. He kept the ride from being boring.

Although Cheeky Kiwi Travel limited the group size to 16, that is not true at Hobbiton. To get to the actual movie set requires a short ride in a standard size bus. The Hobbiton tour group is everyone in the standard size bus.

The Hobbiton movie set is amazing. It is beautiful with flowers, plants and many small details at each cottage entry.

Our Hobbiton guide Nathaniel was very good, but we were a large group and NOT provided with headsets. Hearing Nathaniel became even more challenging when it started raining. Graciously, oversize umbrellas were available to use during the tour.

Additional Hobbiton cottages that will be accessible to enter are scheduled to open in December.

This was a wonderful all day small bus (there were 6 of us) tour from Auckland to Hobbiton. Michael, our driver/guide, was very knowledgeable about New Zealand and the countryside we traveled through on our way to and from Hobbiton. The price included the entrance fee for the Hobbiton guided tour. For all Lord of the Rings fans this is a great way to see Hobbiton and a bit more of NZ from Auckland.

This is my first time in New Zealand and I decided to spend the entire month of November here, and was planning on spending my last couple of weeks just hanging out in the South Island. I had gone to Hobbiton the when I was on a tour of the North Island a couple weeks ago. However, weather kept me from getting to do a couple other things in the north so I came back up to try again. Since I was back in the North Island anyway, I decided why not hit Hobbiton a second time while can. I think the Cheeky Kiwi driver Don actually managed to make my second visit to Hobbiton even more memorable than the first. He managed to keep everyone’s name straight right from the get go and made each person feel individually welcomed. He also gave some amazing culture and history lessons both coming and going. Just a warning, if you don’t like to sing, don’t sit in the front since he will hand you the mike. I don’t think I have the greatest voice but I definitely made some memories singing Hobbit songs on the way back to Auckland. If/when I return to New Zealand, I will be looking at taking another Cheeky Kiwi tour and I will definitely request Don :)

      Cheers!

My husband and I spent our careers working in the Hollywood film industry and are big fans of the Lord of the Rings films, so we were eager to see the Hobbiton Movie Set. This small group tour (13 people on our tour) was a great way to learn about the location. Grant, our driver with Cheeky Kiwi, was friendly and knowledgeable. He wore a headset microphone for his commentary, so we could hear him clearly as he described how Peter Jackson scouted the location and convinced the farmer to allow the crew to film there, as well as much of what we saw on the hour-plus drive to get there from Auckland.
We drove through spectacular scenery to get to Hobbiton, and we had a beautiful sunny day for the tour. We had a different tour guide, Nathaniel, for the set tour. He answered all our questions about filming there, and added some interesting inside information about Peter Jackson's attention to detail when creating the set.
We were fortunate to see the newly created interior sets, which were built out inside two of the hobbit holes. These just opened recently.
This tour is not to be missed and was well worth the cost. The shire is even more captivating in real life than it looks in the films.

Great trip, highly recommend it! Scenery was beautiful and Mike our guide/driver was super knowledgeable about the history and places where we drove through. We lucked out with superb weather, and we were the first group of the day through Hobbiton so we got to experience it pretty much as if it was just us there. Hobbiton was incredible, all the attention to detail, you could spend hours there, I won't say much more, you just have to go see it for yourself! Time went fast and before we knew it we were at the Green Dragon (the cider is tasty as!).
It was great to be in a small, personal group - everyone was really chill and there was no rush to get back, fitting in an icecream stop at the best local spot :). (Yay to Mike's insider knowledge!).
I had only booked the day before spontaneously, joining a friend going. I don't usually jump on organised tours but I'm stoked I did.
Thanks Mike for all the interesting infos, patience and the good vibes! Cheers to you and Cheeky Kiwi for an awesome experience!!

I went on the small group tour to the Hobbiton movie set. The trip there was made exceptionally fun by our amazing tour guide, John. He was very funny and kind and the pick up was easy. He then did a great job of telling us all about the Auckland area and the places we passed along the way. He was very knowledgeable and funny! He did a great job of making sure everyone felt comfortable on the trip and soon every person felt comfortable talking with him on and off the bus. He was clear about the directions as well once we got to the set. From there we had an amazing tour of Hobbiton and got to learn all about the set and it really was like stepping into the Shire. There is a bit of construction going on currently, but the farm gave us some complimentary gifts, and so it all evened out. And honestly the hobbit homes took everyone's attention away from the construction. Our tour guide, John, did an excellent job of making sure everyone got pictures in the iconic places, and even took our pictures, couples pictures, dressing up pictures, and group pictures. It was such a wonderful experience, I cannot recommend this particular excursion enough. Five stars.

What visit to the North Island by a Tolkien fan would be complete without a visit to Bag End? The tour was a bit pricey, but I truly believe it was worth every penny. The tour was very well organized from check-in through departure and our tour guide, Rob, was exceptional. I was thrilled to wander the trails with my group and see the attractions and that in and of itself would have been sufficient. Our guide made the trip astounding by his depth of knowledge and ability to effortlessly herd a group from six nations, despite the torrential downpours. If I could have changed anything, I would have planned better to make a reservation for the full banquet tour. The two and a half hour movie set tour just wasn’t enough!
