- Tour313103768880 contributionsSeamless experience to Hobbington and “back again”Don was a great driver and took extra care to make sure we were comfortable and entertained. As per the description, Hobbington tour is done by a separate tour guide from Hobbington—wonderful experience, can’t recommend it highly enough! There seems to be plenty of parking at Hobbington if you need to drive yourself, but if you don’t have a car or don’t want to make the long drive—Cheeky Kiwi travel is a great way to travel there and back from Auckland. They definitely went above and beyond to help it be a seamless experience.Written 12 December 2024

- neiltU7338UN0 contributionsA wonderful NZ experience. Now I have to go home and rewatch “The Hobbit” and LOTR. The drive down and back was interesting as was the commentary by our driver. Wai-O-Tapu was more than I expected and the leg workout was a plus. Great value for the money.Written 11 December 2024

- J5948GUtaylorb0 contributionsBig day but worth itThis is a fast and furious day from Auckland to Rotorua and back which is just what I wanted. Faced with not much time, I had to make decisions as to what I wanted to see and what I could skip and this tour was perfect. I opted for the Wai-o-Tapu and Te Puia segments. The tour is essentially your transportation and travel agent for the day; the guide makes sure you get to where you need to go in a timely manner. When you get to your "excursions" the guide may hang around or make their way to pick up/drop off another part of your small group. For my excursions, I joined a timed tour or walked around the area as a self-guide. Wai-O-Tapu was a MUST DO! There were surprises around every corner.Written 11 December 2024
- BiancaPeter0 contributionsGreat day filled with activities. The tour was well organised with plenty of comfort stops along the way where you can get out and stretch your legs and use a toilet, or simply wait in the minivan if you didn't want to get out. The Waitomo caves were simply amazing and the glow worms are a must see! Rotorua was great and the Te Puia experience was a fantastic little insight into Māori culture and obviously the geothermal springs were fantastic. The tour guide, Joseph, was friendly, informative and extremely helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely do another tour with Cheeky Kiwi Tours.Written 10 December 2024
- Vacation162771415340 contributionsI’m not going to recommend my friends to go with this company because of the attitude of the driver. The driver is not friendly and makes personal comments about the customer. Also when he knows one person is still not in the car, he closes the door of the car, making the customer feel very nervous and uneasy.Written 10 December 2024
- Venture102794902240 contributionsWould recommendOur driver Ali was the best! He was so nice, knowledge and funny! We had a lot of fun cracking jokes about NZ/Australia rivalry. Hobbiton is a mast see even for someone who is not a big LOTR fun. Rotorua and hot/mud pools good experience but a bit stinky 😉Written 9 December 2024
- soeunk8250 contributionsAmazing time touring Wai O Tapu & Te PuiaWe had a wonderful time with our guide, Grant. He was very kind and tried to make the entire process as engaging as possible. He also tried to get to know each member of the group on a personal level which was greatly appreciated! The tour was also run very smoothly, and Grant told us the exact timing that we would be picked up and transported to the next touring location, as well as seamless transfers for other tours within the group as well. Pickup and drop off was super easy/seamless, and tour views were amazing!! If you are looking for a day trip with everything set and planned for you, I would highly recommend booking with this group! An amazing and memorable trip for my family and I!Written 9 December 2024

He also greeted all tourists by hand a and did the same when he dropped us off. He even got off the van each time someone was picked up or dropped off just to personally say hello or good bye.Written 9 December 2024
- MattyBerrry0 contributionsAmazing Bay of Islands!!!This was hands down the best tour I've done in New Zealand. It fits in so much without feeling rushed. Bay of Islands is such an amazing place to visit and the forest on the west coast was amazing. We got to see dolphins and whales on the cruise which was so cool. I can't recommend this tour enough.Written 9 December 2024

The Cheeky Kiwi driver picked everyone up from Auckland, and gave great and hilarious commentary for most of the drive. We ended up ahead of schedule, but instead of having us spend several hours eating lunch, he called Hobbiton and got us an early tour so we ended up saving 2 hours on the whole day. Fantastic job by CHeeky Kiwi, Waitomo Caves, and Hobbiton. It's a definite must-see.

Our tour guide, Louise, was absolutely fantastic. The drive down to the attractions and back takes a couple of hours, but she kept us entertained with stories and information about New Zealand. She made an effort to get to know each of us so that she could give us individual tips and advice for the rest of our trips.
We had a 6am start, and as none of us had been able to get breakfast beforehand, complementary breakfast bars, snacks and drinks were provided throughout the day. We were given tips on how to make the most out of the attractions we visited, including how to get the best photos at Hobbiton, and the best view of the glowworms in the caves.
The whole day was absolutely fantastic, and we will definitely do other tours with Cheeky Kiwi next time we visit New Zealand.

Great Tour out of Auckland. I would highly recommend Cheeky Kiwi Tour company. Our guide Michael was great, friendly, informative, professional. The van had usb ports to charge your phones if necessary. The Tour Stopped at the Hobbiton. I would say that it was a bit rushed. ( HOBBITON MOVIE SET ) You have to hurry when taking all of your photos. I would also suggest the Hobbiton Movie set stagger the tours by 30 minutes not 15 as each tour runs in to each other on the path in the Shire. Everyone wants photos and its time consuming. One guide on the tour asked us to move along and not stop to take photos. It was the group behind ours, but we said sorry we came here to take photos its not our fault the group ahead is slow. So I think they need to stagger the tours by at least 30 minutes so we are not so rushed. Other than that I highly recommend this tour. If you are paying 80 dollars entrance then you shouldn't be so rushed and you should be allowed to take photos. After all people have travelled from far away and this is a beautiful setting.Other than this everything was great. They even gave us water and small snacks in the van.

If a tour gets me up before 6AM and has me in a van for 12 hours it better be good. Tour started out well with all participants ready when the van showed up (we were the second of five pickups). Then the 2 hour drive to Hobbiton for the tour. We stopped once along the way for a leg stretch and closeup views of some Angus steers and the countryside. The Hobbiton tour was excellent (and I haven’t seen any of the movies).
Then back in the van for the 88 km ride to Waitomo caves. Here’s where the tour went sideways for me. I’ll admit that I’m not familiar with the roads but consulting google maps after the trip it certainly appears that there was a more direct route than the one we took which was on all back country, twisty, curvy roads. We also stopped at an overlook of a damn where Grant talked on about its history when no one really seemed to care. Then back in the van to our next stop of feeding veggie chips to some random ostriches. Odd. Then Dropped some of the passengers off in town for lunch while the rest of us continued on to a BBQ spot where it was obvious that Grant was close with the owners. I get trying to support businesses that you feel are good but it just seemed odd that the group was split up and it sucked up time dropping folks off and then picking them back up. The BBQ was ok but we were the only ones in this huge restaurant which felt creepy. I know tourism is down due to coronavirus but this place has seating for 200 and there were only the six of us there. we rushed through lunch so we could head back down the hill to pick up the other passengers and get to our 2 pm tour.
The caves and glow worms were amazing. The local Maori guides are passionate about the story and very knowledgeable.
Then back into the van for the 2 1/2 hour trip back to Auckland. Have to say it was the longest ride of my life. Grant talked non-stop. About what I’m not sure. No one was engaged in a dialogue with him, he was just talking about cooking steaks on a BBQ and other random facts. Other reviewers have praised grant for his constant commentary, I just found it a bit much. We did stop for ice cream which was fantastic and quite delicious but at that point we all just wanted to get back to the hotel. Ww finally got back to the hotel almost 13 hours after we had began.
I have seen other tour companies offering the same itinerary in ten hours. I’m not sure where they cut time as the tours at each venue are run by the venue, not the tour company. But....I sure would have loved to have spent two fewer hours in the van!

We booked a with Cheeky Kiwi for this tour as the website suggested the buses were luxury and it was going to be a long day on a bus (12 hours). The bus was good looking and had nice leather seats, but the space on the bus was quite bad, there were a few seats which had almost no leg room. each pick up someone would sit in one and move due to no leg room. The charge points did not work, which was a bit annoying, they were lit up but no devices would charge on them. It was not as spacious as the website suggested.
We had 2 young children so we had extra things like a pram, the pram had to go on the back seat, which made it hard to take on and off.
The form when buying doesn't have age ranges but the email does, so we booked a child ticket when a 4 year old would be classed as infant according to the email confirmation, so slight overpayment.
Not sure if it was normal but there were 2 members of staff, but 1 mic, so any talking between the two staff was hard to follow (I was towards the back of the mini bus), and some of the facts about New Zealand were not fully accurate (though were close enough for most people I guess)
The attractions were great, we really enjoyed both hobbiton and the glow worm caves, both amazing attractions, and the tour had plenty of stops.

I booked the tour pretty spontaneously (one day in advance) and it was no problem. I got my confirmation right away.
Our driver, Michael, was really nice and chatty. He knew lots about Auckland, Hobbiton, the caves and all the small towns we drove through. He made sure everyone was comfortable, had water and sunscreen asked various time if we should have a bathroom break and picked us up on time.
First, we headed to Hobbiton, which was really nice. Our guide there was really great too. We had some time for a drink at the end and to browse through the gift shop.
Before our tour through the Waitomo Caves, we stopped for lunch. We had a choice between a Barbecue or a nice (cheaper) restaurant. I opted for the Tomo. Really good choice. The owner is just fabulous, he is really nice and makes sure everyone is happy. Even though he friendly teased our Australian girls he gave them drinks on the house. I got a Glowworm on the house as well. The food was delicious, too. All in all, all of us who had decided to have lunch there were really happy with our decision.
The Waitomo Caves were a little disappointing. The tour takes 45 minutes, the majority of the time, you spend walking through the caves without glowworms. The boat ride through the caves with the glowworms takes not even 10 minutes.
When we headed back, Michael stopped again for us and dropped everyone off at their hotel. Thanks for the great tour!

I've done runnings tours through Sydney, Melbourne, the great ocean road tour, a NZ south islands tour, and this Hobbiton/Waitomo tour, and I have to say this is by far the best tour I've done out of all of them! Louise our tour guide was very professional, warm, genuine, and gave boatloads of information. She was very attentative to our needs (one time I stopped by one of the gift stores, I forgot my wallet and she lent me the money I needed for my purchase!), and she fostered a great group environment by having us all get to know each other. I loved it!! Will definitely do another tour by this company (cheeky kiwi) if I come back to NZ! 10/10 would recommend any tour by cheeky kiwi, they are not only super professional but will give a lot of great genuine experiences! It felt like as fulfilling of an experience as it could have been. I'll think back on this tour with great memories!

My cousin and I (both 19 y/o) had the most amazing tour with our driver Lance! He shared knowledge of local Maori stories and really made the tour worthwhile. Hobbiton was simply amazing for both fans and those who haven't seen the films, a gorgeous, well ran and fun look into film making and the 'Lord of the Rings'. Waitomo caves were simply magic, something about the local guides passion and seeing something most would only see on national geographic simply took our breath away. Truely this tour is a MUST if visiting Auckland. Thanks Lance!

What a lovely day exploring both Hobbiton movie set and Waitomo glowworms caves .
Grant, our guide, was very friendly and provided us with heaps of interesting information and tips about New Zealand , especially the North Island and the places we were about to explore. The man knows a lot about his country!
He was very keen on learning more about his guest, we shared good conversations about our respective travels and so on.
Special Thank you for the picking up and the droping off at our place and also for the very useful umbrellas !

Great Tour. Our guide, Michael, picked us up on time and gave us plenty of information on Auckland and neighbourhoods along the way to the caves and to Hobbiton. Would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone in Auckland wishing to visit the movie set and caves.

After I book the tour, will you notify WAITOMO GLOWWORM CAVES? The description below is from their website.
Besides the tickets, will you charge the corresponding for the 3-year-old kid? If the answer is "yes", how much is it?
Do you have the seat for the kid in the bus?
Are kids free?
Under 4-year-olds go free, but they must be booked to secure a place on tour.

I (and wife) too will be on the Ovation of the Seas at Auckland Saturday Nov 2 7am-8pm. Will the bus pick up from the ship terminal and will the tour get us back in time? This was asked earlier but not answered.
Written 22 August 2019
You should check with your tour provider to confirm pick up and drop off location/time. Let them know what time the ship is leaving port so they can make sure to have you back in time.

Why does the price go up for a solo traveler?

Nope, well as far as I know, it won’t and although I bought deal through Bookme but still price was same. whether you are individual or in groups.

I was picked up at my hotel in Auckland. When I googled pickup points I selected a hotel on the designed route. You need to contact them to confirm but my bet is that you would need to UBER from ship to hotel pickup. This was a beautiful experience for me and I recommend that you at least research the possibilities. Good luck.
