Really nice zoo but hardly any animals
Great zoo! The habitats are all really nice but hardly any animals. Many large cages with seemingly just one animal (or sometimes none). We did enjoy the animal shows - very educational.

    Kiwi Hunt
Three very busy Kiwis raced around their nocturnal enclosure - so excited to see them! That’s why we headed to zoo. Discovered NZ does have snakes - they just call them kraits, and met a fellow older than dinosaurs! Pink Flamingoes always impress too. Disappointingly, public transport not easily accessible from Harbour - so we gave up looking for bus stops, tram or train options and caught an Uber. Really set up for those driving…

    Enjoyable zoo to walk around
We arrived early and there was already a lot of people arriving. I wouldn't go any later in the busy summer period as it got quite crowded before we left. We enjoyed the animals but quite a few enclosures we couldn't see the animals, e.g. red panda, tiger, alligator. It's set in nice surroundings and is a nice walk. The food is very expensive so take your own!

    Time well spent
We visited the Auckland Zoo on the first day of 2025. It is a new year treat for our two grandchildren. An impressive zoo with many wild life to see. There are NZ Acteearoa, Africa Safari Track, Southeast Adia Jungle Track, South American Rainforest Track and Australia Bush Track. Need to spend the whole day if want to see all. We managed only NZ, SEA and African Tracks as we have another venue to visit. There are cafes for mesls and drink, children playground and toilets at every corner. Great outing it was.

    Great Zoo
Great zoo, We went to see the kiwis, but the rest was good too, divided into geographic areas. I liked the aerial ropeways for the primates. Good coffee in the cafe too. We got the hop on hop off bus there and back.

See the Giant Weta up close!
Great zoo! Large enclosures for animals, really fun shows/animal encounters, and a cafeteria with surprisingly good food. There are zoo volunteers at many of the areas that will give you great info on the animals. Make sure to go to the bird show, the keepers fly them right over your head and it was very informative. I also loved the NZ animal encounter show, where you can get up close to the giant weta bug.

    Underwhelming
Auckland Zoo is underwhelming. Its animal diversity is lacking, and the parking and seating facilities are insufficient, leaving much to be desired for the elderly, families, and other visitors. The food options are few and far between. The Scenic Gardens walk, on the other hand, is a delight. I bought my ticket online, which was a convenient and cost-effective choice. However, there was minimal interaction between staff and visitors. I give it a 5/10 rating and would recommend it with some reservations.

    Very nice
Pair of tigers, deers, sambals, hippos are all phenomenal to watch. Penguin enclosure is nicely done up. But cudnt enjoy watching them since they don't allow to stand and observe peacefully. It's felt like we were in Mumbai local trains wherein the push and shove actions were plentiful. U enter yourself but u exit on the crowds push & flow. Hardly cud click pictures It was that quick and smooth.

    Family enriching walk and discovery
Took the bus from Central city to the zoo less than 30 minutes. I spent almost 3 hours at the zoo such a large place to discover and see mostly everything was open. There was also a lot of shops and restaurants available. Kiwi experience was a bit difficult to see because it was in the dark. Overall great experience.

    Amazing experience
Absolutely amazing! Staff members are very welcoming and friendly, there’s plenty of activities during the day and a couple of cafes/restaurants. Prices for food are quite high, but that’s expected in such places. Many animals to observe. They look comfortable and happy in their large, free and clean enclosures. I usually don’t enjoy zoos, but this is an amazing place to spend your day. Highly recommend!

Well worth visiting while in Auckland
Recently spent a few days in Auckland before heading off on a tour by train. We spent several hours at the zoo after going there on the hoop on hop off bus service. The zoo was well set out and had a wide variety of animals and birds, however the purpose built kiwi enclosure still left it almost to view the nocturnal birds. the various regions of the world were well defined and ammenities easy to find. Would definitely rate it as well worthwhile if visiting Auckland although would not be the major reason for visiting.

    Great experience
I have mostly been avoiding zoos for years as caged animals are depressing, but I wanted to see an kiwi and NZ is the place. And what a place. Lots a habitat for the animals. It’s like peeking over a neighbor’s fence. It took some patience, but I saw kiwi. Way cool! Plus a Tasmanian devil and some animals I had never heard of, like a tuatara. That’s a reptile around since the Triassic (before dinosaurs).

    Auckland zoo
Auckland zoo is situated near Western Springs quarter of Auckland and entrance charges to the zoo was NZ $ 29. The Zoo is 40 acres in size and opened on Saturday 16 December 1922.The Zoo is separated into divisions pertaining to the region of the origin of different animal species exhibited. On entering the zoo there were direction indicators to various sections of the zoo .Was enchanted by the unique and expensive artificial climate controlled "Tropical Dome" section of the zoo that housed tropical plant life and different animal and fish species at a constant temperature of 28*c.In the New Zealand section got to view the nocturnal Kiwi. Excellent Zoo for spotting species found only in New Zealand which is normally not exhibited in zoo's across the World.I saw the Kiwi for the first time in my life having visited the World's best zoo's in Europe and Asia.

We found this zoo to be delightful. Many interesting animals to see. I have mixed feelings about zoos, but overall I think they are helpful for preserving endangered species and educating people, especially children, about the importance of conservation. The animals seemed well cared for. We met some of the volunteers and they were very dedicated and delightful. If you have time, I would recommend visiting the zoo. I found the line to not be very long, so not sure if you need advanced tickets. Maybe saved a couple of minutes. But if you arrive when they are busier, the line may be longer. We arrived shortly after 11 AM, so we might’ve missed the crowd, as the parking lot was quite full by that time. They have a senior rate at the zoo, and I am a senior, so I may have have lost a little money by getting tickets in advance.

Overall is a nice small zoo, which i like, because taking younger children is harder for them to walk around so much. However, the food there are just incredibly bad and expensive. Around $10 for cold frozen sandwich, or a single tiny taco are just rubbing. and Taste so bad..so please bring your won lunches is plan on going.

The Zoo of Auckland is to much interesting and too much well organized. It is located about 5.4 km southwestern from the Auckland central area. We opted to go from our hotel (74 Albert St.) to the Zoo by walking, to have the opportunity to better see the city. It spent about one-hour and half walking following the indications of Google maps. The staff of the Zoo is very friendly and prompt to answer all your questions. In all areas of the Zoo you have also a set of voluntary people (all of them wearing red T-shirts) that are so kind and interested to help you with information and to find the animals inside the enclosures. The Zoo have four specific areas (New Zealand, Australia, Africa and South America) in which you will find specimens from these continental areas. There is a set of hours with specified attractions (for example 13:00 pm is the attraction with Kiwi – they feed near to the window and you have the opportunity to see the foraging in front of you - do not lose it). The general organization and information are too much well done although some improvement could be done by telling scientific names and map of species distribution for all specimens in exhibition (scientific names and distribution are provided only for some specific species). We considered the reptile exhibition as the best we have seen among Zoos we have visited around the world (the famous Tuatara, geckos, skinks, lizard glass, dragon lizards, the tiliqua, among many other). The animals are in general in very good conditions and the enclosure areas allow you a good vision and possibility of good photos. Reserve a complete day to enjoy all the Zoo and take with you a set of things to picnic there – sandwiches, fruits, snacks and soft drinks (there area food areas in the zoo with good options but there are also some areas with tables that you can picnic there if you like it). There are many toilets and water fountains to you to fill your bottle. We loved the Auckland Zoo.

We purchased our tickets thinking it would be a breeze to enter the zoo for a day of fun. Sadly buying off Trip Advisor was much more of a hassle and delay then simply walking up to the window. Our ticket receipt contained no scannable code so it took three staff members at three different entry points before we were confirmed and could enter. Next time we will buy at the window

Well what can we say about Auckland Zoo, but just how fabulous it was.
Easy to navigate, wonderful selection of animals in very large open spaces.
The Zoo was one of our places to visit on a very hectic schedule of New Zealand.
My Sister in Law absolutely loves zoos and Auckland didn’t disappoint.

We ordered a cup of ice coffee at the Te PUNA cafe around 4.05pm. As not many people were there we expected the coffee to be very quick. The female coffee make was talking with her colleagues and doing nothing. Wasted more than 20mins and when we asked her she said she just forgot with no apology. We missed out the Red Panda show because of this slow coffee maker. Spoked to the Indian duty manager and his attitude was absolutely unacceptable - rude and sounds like he was not educated properly.

Shame on you Te PUNA Cafe!

Will never ever go to the zoo again.

We visited the Auckland Zoo on a Friday evening on the last open-late for the year; it's one of our favourite places and we try to go every year. We took a picnic, and had some time to wander around. Very impressed with the new construction for the tigers, and the way the trees and greenery have grown into lush gardens, along with the wide open spaces that the animals have. We loved the new lovebird aivary, and visiting the keas and the red pandas. Having visited other zoos overseas, who obviously do this best with what they have for the animals, it can be sad to see that there is not always much space to work with. I think a previous reviewer who said that it was big zoo with not many animals to see is missing the point. Zoos are not longer just about entertainment, but conservation and education. So we love visiting this progressive and spacious zoo. Well done!

A zoo in any city is always worth a visit in my book! Auckland Zoo has been undergoing a lot of changes in recent times in how they show the animals. They are busy showing casing their animals in a more natural way rather than the use of cages as in days past. Well worth a visit and who doesn't love a zoo? Very easy to reach by public transport and a lot to see in both NZ related animals and bird life with many overseas additions also. Love the giraffes in their desert enclosure and if you are there at the right time you can hand feed them.

We had a lovely time at the zoo, it's always lovely to see the animals and walk around the gardens. We had, however, an appalling lunch at Te Puna. It was very expensive and poor food, the wrapped sandwich I bought was stale on both sides and they charged $6.50 for a small post-mix soft drink. I returned the sandwich and the man behind the counter implied that all of the sandwiches would be stale and suggested a pie instead. If you go to the zoo, definitely take your own food.

This was a great day out seeing the animals in their habitats. Visiting Africa via the exhibit was wonderful. The ostrich we're looking after eggs, giraffe feeding nearby and zebras parading their beautiful coats. We loved the meercats antics and found the cats in their camoflaged environments. We enjoyed seeing saddlebacks and North island kokako in the forest Avery as well as bellbirds, tuis and kereru.
After lunch we visited the penguins and sealion which were enjoying a midday swim. The young kiwi in its dark environment managed to run right past us which was fun to watch. They are quite fast.
The orangutans were out but not on the new ropes (so will have to go back to see them). The spider monkeys were very active as we're the lemur and tamarins - cotton topped; emperor and lion. They were all so amazing to watch.
On our way out we saw the otters (after walking through Australia). The troupe were exciting to observe and very active if a little pongy 😀 It was a fantastic day out which we all enjoyed a lot.
