Sit back and relax!
Travelled today with my son for his 18th birthday as he's wanted to do this trip for years. Really enjoyed it. We both listened to lots of the commentry over the headsets which was interesting and informative. Just nice to see the country from a different perspective and see some of the small towns you don't pass through in a car, Un fortunately weather wasn't great so we didn't get the best views. Something to bear in mind if you're traveling at this time of year. Also it was dark by the time we got down Paraparaumu. Would also be good to do this earlier in the year. Prices for on board food were reasonable and it was quite tasty for pre prepared food. The young man who served us was very friendly and welcoming. He was perfect in a customer service role

A great family trip

We went from Auckland to National Park - two young children and 3 adults. The staff were incredibly helpful and the trip very interesting. The children were able to move around and we all loved the trip.

Trippy Train Travel!
Apr 2021
What a fun and enjoyable trip - Auckland to Wellington with great company. We had packed some nibbles for the trip - some drinks and cheeses/crackers etc. The trip is highly recommended! The viewing deck is the best part of it - got some fantastic shots, and it was a thrill to feel the wind/elements out in the open. Great friendly staff also coming around regularly and collecting the rubbish and keeping the train in order! I'd love to do this trip again in another season and see the changes in the landscape.

Wonderful Whirlwind There and Back Again
Nov 2020 • Couples
Decided as we hadn’t done this trip since we were first married we would give it an updated crack. Arrived at the Wellington Station after our first ever Uber ride and one of the lovely journey attendants obviously recognised us as Northern Explorers and got us all checked in and boarding platform/baggage tag savvied. Grand start. Had a lovely seat with good views, love the nice new carriages and the viewing carriage is a really nice chance to stand up and stretch your legs in the fresh air. The informational audio provided is really interesting and I was delighted to learn lots of local cultural history along my trip at each spot. Did notice that this commentary cuts out during crew announcements but doesn’t pause so when it came back on after longer announcements I had missed heaps of the dialogue. Staff in Cafe and on the train couldn’t be nicer and delivered hot food that was actually hot and first rate coffee which impressed me. Good menu and selections in the cabinet. Nice clean facilities and apart from one other rude passenger who didn’t read the part of his boarding confirmation that said wear earphones and was watching a loud device - it was a fantastic trip.

No annoying airport security checks, no luggage restrictions, no stress........trains are just great if you want to relax into a holiday.

This journey has a bit of everything, harbour views, mountains, engineering marvels. Highly recommended.

Outstanding!
This must be one of the best rail journeys anywhere. Travelling by train is a very low stress mode of transport - the seats are comfortable, there is plenty of room to move around and the views are spectacular. The open air observation car is especially good.

You could take a picnic or just purchase food from the cafe car. It would be great to see something like a Japanese bento box, the ubiquitous railway eki ben, being available.

Auckland departure is from the old Strand station, not the new Britomart terminal, which does rather detract from the experience. Hopefully, that may change when the new City Link underground is completed.

Ravines- check
From the urban decay of Auckland to stunning ravines and rolling hills. Doesn't really pick up till below Hamilton, but it's good to see from a new perspective. Sevice was good, food and drinks good (tip- ask for extra shots or you'll get basically hot milk). Enjoyed the viewing car, wasn't ashamed of a couple of naps during the trip. It's a long day though, but glad we did it.

All good
Nov 2019
Enjoyed the trip immensly, the service on board was very good, Buffett car good would recommend you order your food for the journey, quite a few people took their own snacks on. Price of food seemed similar in price to off train shops. Very good with some one collecting rubbish regularly, all good. Scenery amazing, narration good, we had good weather which makes the trip.
