      Robbery
We were really looking forward to this as we had done a prison tour in Melbourne This tour in Napier is dreadful. As previous reviewers have stated it is a complete waste of money. The staff couldn’t be less interested. It’s a small site, unimaginative, poorly presented with numerous permanent barriers up, impeding access. Don’t waste your money on this “attraction “

Amazing little tour, lots of information about the history you can choice between historic or haunted audio tour. They also have the option of an escape room. Highly recommend the tour if you in Napier

      Jail junkyard.
The owners of this jail should be the ones that are in prison because this tourist trap is highway robbery. The lady that served us had inappropriate cleavage and a sassy tude.

      Not the NAPIER way.
There was no welcome. It was as if we were a nuisance. Cost far exceeded the experience. Our 3 overseas guests were not at all impressed. We were given devices, for an audio tour. Out of the 5; 2 did not work at all; 2 were inaudible ~ even turned up to full; 1 was passable ~ but only to the youngest of our party. So much of the inside was fenced off, that we could not enjoy the full experience. We were ashamed that our guests were not able to take the full tour with an audio device that actually worked. We will NOT bring anyone else there.

Save your money and skip this
Very disappointing. There is no attempt to recreate or restore the site to any particular time period, it is a dirty, abandoned site with some recorded stories either on your audio device or on posters. It gives no real picture or indication of what the place was actually like. It is not a testament to anything, nor illustrative of anything, really. Must be a bit of cash cow for the owners.

      Waste of $60 NZD
Sadly the place is in a state of disrepair, uncared for and not been maintained in a long time. I was so disappointed as was my friend. The audio was interesting unfortunately that was the only positive. Even the written information was tatty and had seen better days. I do hope some investment is made in the prison. We were disheartened that a grassed area where Maori's were buried was left open for M.O.P to walk over, which is against Maori tradition and disrespectful.

      Not worth it.
Very disappointed. Was looking forward to learning the history of this place. The audio tour was hard to hear even in the loudest setting. The people running it were terrible at customer service and showed no interest in sharing the history of the place. Half the cells and rooms in the prison which were part of the tour were closed off with danger tape so we couldn't see half of the prison. Over priced and left feeling completely ripped off. This could be a really cool tour, its a real shame.

      Rip off
The biggest rip off in town.Half the place closed off and the staff couldn’t give two hoots about the experience. At $30 a head we left feeling ripped off. Would not recommend at all.

      Disappointing
The handheld audio tour is not worth the money especially as they kept running out of battery! Students (cheap labour) running the place. Could be improved with a guided tour. I also fell down steps as I finished the tour by reception. I appreciate it is an old building and they don't want to take away the history of the building. However there should be an element of Health and Safety - white lines on the edge of steps??? I will not be returning or recommending to friends.

      Super super dirty place
Super dirty, super unorganised, super sh*t place that I have Ever visited in the beautiful NZ. The place is soooo dirty that the bacteria and disease all around the place. It does not worth the $30 per Adult !! This place is also being run by 2 teens 16 -19 . If you dont believe me and decided to check for your self, please at least 1) make sure to go to toilet, because their one is super dirty! 2) Wear a face mask and gloves and bring your own sentiser 3) do not bring your kids with you

      Interesting history
The prison is a great tour to take. We choose the ghost tour which was interesting and sparked the senses. Everyone is given a listening device for information on each each part of the prison. This was the best thing we did in Napier. Would recommend to others.

      Overpriced and neglected
I realise that tourist attractions have lost a lot of revenue owing to Covid but this place is seriously neglected and poorly presented. It cost $30 and adult for a self guided tour of the prison. The grounds and dwellings are neglected and poorly presented. About a third of the facility was designated a hazard and fenced off. I hope they can regain some revenue and put it back into this attraction, as it seriously needs improvements.

      Disappointed
We did the self guided historical tour. The information was interesting and loved learning about the history. However it felt unkept and uncared for. There was rubbish around the grounds, a McDonald’s cup, a lollipop etc and we were the only ones there. The receptionist wasn’t very friendly or personable. It feels like what could be a really amazing experience is lost unfortunately.

      Prison
This was not a cheap excursion. We took the self tour. It was interesting but not a place I would return too. There were no signs for parking and only a few spots where we thought we could park. The attendant was nice but seemed to be very uninterested.

      Interesting, enjoyable historical tour
Did the tour on a weekday afternoon so we were the only visitors at the time, which meant we could take our time and really soak up the history of the prison. Very informative and interesting. Had a bit of fun taking photos with the costumes.

I rarely feel ripped off or scammed but that is exactly how I felt after we spent $120 for four people. The place is in complete disrepair, not old and interesting but filthy dirty and falling down. Much of the prison was fenced off and inaccessible due to scaffolding all over the place. There was no clear sense of an exhibition with some cells just used as junk rooms. What signage was there was falling down and faded. The audio commentary was difficult to hear and the story telling not only hard to hear but repeated some of the signage around.

The toilets are a disgrace, at the end of an old cell and were filthy dirty with little privacy. The most shocking thing to me was the disarray of the memorial garden built by teens in 2005. Two of these kids died not long after but there is no respect in maintaining it in their honour.

We were so disgusted with this place that on the way back down the hill we warned off three different groups of visitors. It was our only way of dealing with our anger at this ‘attraction’.

Absolutely ridiculous that they are charging 30$ per person for a self guided audio tour. A lot of the prison is inaccessible and either just closed off or being repaired. It’s a mess and there is no organisation at all. It’s run down and definitely not worth paying to visit, it should be free until they are finished whatever they are doing.

Had an amazing experience, everything was well organised. Enjoyed the escape room activity and completed the challenge (Ishaan thank you :p)
We took the ghost tour and it was worth the time we spent over there. Had a great chat with Ishaan and he gave us awesome reference for lunch. Thank you Ishaan for your hospitality. It is definitely a must place to visit if you are planning a trip to Napier.

This was super fun and… bonus, a bit creepy! We did the self guided history tour with audio guide which was great. Loved the run down historic nature of the place. So much history!
Don’t forget to do an escape room while you’re there (book ahead) family fun - yay!
