Enjoy the wonders of both Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves whilst transferring between Auckland & Rotorua.
This small group tour is an informative, convenient and cost effective way to experience the wonders of both Hobbiton and Waitomo Glow Worm Caves whilst being provided a transfer between Auckland and Rotorua or vice versa. I found our guides, Pete and Herms to be knowledgeable, friendly & engaging and, although a long day, a very enjoyable one! Highly recommend.

          Just “meh”
Had been very excited about this trip, but it fell quite short of my expectations. Our driver pointed out a few buildings on our way out of Auckland, then said nothing more until we arrived in Rotorua. When she did speak, she sounded tired and annoyed. We arrived in time to see the Māori cultural presentation. This was a $30 add-on for a 20-min show. A bit overpriced for what we received. The walking tour thru the grounds was the best part. Seeing the kiwis and the mud springs and geysers was thrilling. Several tour groups were combined for this part though, so we could not hear the guide at all unless we fought our way to the front of the crowd. The buffet lunch included in the price of the tour was fine. Fresh food, lots of choices. But the entire “Māori culture and hot springs experience” was finished in about 2 hours. For a “13-hour day trip” ( even with 6 hours of driving), I thought there would be more involved. Honestly, the biggest let-down was our driver. Her lack of warmth and interest made the rest of the trip rather flat.

Fun day trip out of Auckland!
Te Puia and the Glowworm Caves were fantastic. Edson was very nice, friendly, and engaging. My boys (ages 9 and 7) absolutely loved him. Great day trip!

The efficient way to visit 2 places on the move.
If you plan to move from Auckland to Rotorua or vice versa and want something to see, this trip is for you! You can also bring your suitcase with you. and 2 drivers were so helpful. I highly recommend it!!!

Going to New Zealand? Call Phillipa at Flexitours
I booked several custom tours with Flexitours for myself and husband. We wanted to see a lot of the attractions are a slower pace. Philipa was absolutely amazing. She arranged each of our days specifically for us! Phillipa was very informative and offered great advice on where and when to see attractions. Phillipa was very quick to respond via WhatsApp. It felt like I had a private tour again. Throughout our time in New Zealand, we had 6 tours either directly with Flexitours or booked for us by Phillipa. Andy was our personal driver for 2 of the days. He was fantastic! He was knowledgeable and a great guide. So glad he was our driver twice! The other tours were well orchestrated. Phillipa was very accommodating (and flexible 🤣) when we wanted to change our itinerary slightly. Our trip to New Zealand was exceptional!! Phillipa was instrumental in making our trip so wonderful. So glad she took care of all the tours!!

          Exceptional Customer Service
We were let down by another company at short notice and called in FlexiToursNZ office to see if they could help. Although it was unlikely we could secure the tour we wanted at such short notice I am writing this review because of the exceptional customer service. Mata, the manager was so helpful and professional. I wish we had used their service rather than the other company. Thank you for your time

FlexiToursNZ... I'll be seeing you guys again!
We had Peter as a driver. He was crucial to our experiences being so positive. I wish him the very best for the future and his endeavours. FlexiToursNZ came to the rescue when I contacted them at the last minute. The group size was perfect. We met a family from Jacksonville, Florida, and two women from Singapore. We spoke, developed respect and shared moments during the trip. Our specific tour at Hobbiton was enjoyable, outside of the young lady who kept heckling my son to stay with our tour group and not wander everywhere at Hobbiton (but she didn't work for FlexiTours). Big T made looking at caves (Waitomo) a beautiful experience, especially with his singing. I hope one day, our friends from the tour group will read this review and smile, looking back at our brief encounter, moments of happiness from a short time in life passing through a small town reminiscent of a big movie (which we never watched).

Only glowing things to say about FlexiToursNZ
We just completed a 2-night 3-day "Hobbiton and everything but the kitchen sink" FlexiToursNZ excursion. What a fantastic experience! Our family of four was in good hands with FlexiTours. We simply hopped aboard our comfortable van and enjoyed the ride, grateful to avoid the challenge of driving on the other side of the road and able to enjoy the scenery out the windows, stress-free. Our driver from Auckland to Hobbiton and Rotorura, Louise, entertained us with her deep knowledge of the region all along the ride down, answering each question we lobbed at her, even through a rainstorm. The weather was perfect by the time we reached Hobbiton, and Louise took care to give us crystal clear directions on when and where to meet her at the end. In Rotorura, she tossed in a short side trip to a historic bath house and the lake before our next destination, Te Puia geothermal park, and a delicious buffet lunch. FlexiTours set up our overnight accommodation at Jet Park hotel and was precisely on time to pick us up the next morning, for a full day of geothermal adventures. On day two of our tour, we were driven by Cathy and treated to her local knowledge. We visited a bubbling mud pot, a rushing waterfall, a stunning geothermal park--Waiotapu--and a lakeside town where we enjoyed lunch with a view. Noticing how much we loved the first geothermal park, Cathy added a side trip to a smaller park, which ended up being a highlight of our day. Day three of our tour was rainy, but we were in excellent hands with Edson, who drove us over rolling, sheep-dotted hills in a rainstorm with utter confidence. Our visit that day to Waitomo Caves was not to be missed! A stunning display of nature's wonders as we floated in darkness and silence under a ceiling of glowing bioluminescence. The mood aboard our FlexiTours vans was friendly and convivial, and we felt safe and welcomed. I have only glowing things to say about FlexiTours. They made travel easy!

          "I'm going on an adventure!'
Fabulous day at Hobbiton with Chris from Flexi Tours. We travelled with a group of 8 down to Hobbiton from Auckland - Chris met us at SkyCity Hotel in great time and we hit the road. Chris was very easy to talk to and extremely welcoming. Chris ensured the elderly members of our group were safe and sound, as well as keeping up communication with all group members. Chris is a great ambassador for Auckland and for Flexi Tours. The buffet lunch at Hobbiton was wonderful, well arranged and no chaos considering the amount of people. Well-oiled machine. The tour of Hobbiton itself was as breathtaking as always - the scenery, offering and staff make this experience what it is. The new Hobbit Hole experience exceeding all of my expectations, this is exactly what Hobbiton was missing and makes for a very exciting end to the tour.

          Pricy Consider Renting a Car
Long drive from Auckland that was made tolerable by a very knowledgeable driver. He had so many interesting facts, details and history along the route. The bus was torturous to ride in as every bump seemed to be amplified by worn out shocks/struts. However, the driver told us the vehicle was being replaced any day. In my opinion, the price of the trip was pricy, it did however include admission to the Marori culture center, but not the special event was the singing and native war dance. If you’re adventurous and don’t mind the driving, I’d recommend renting a car in Auckland, which would save you a few hundred NZD and provide the flexibility to stop wherever you wanted along the drive.

Hobbit home run and Glowworm gold!
Top tier! We expected Hobbiton to be a bit kitchy and something to check off the list. Turned out to be delightful in far more detailed then expected. The newly opened Hobbit homes are incredible. The Hobbit fans in our group couldn't have been more pleased. Waitomo caves exceeded expectations as well. When they turn the lights back on and you see the way the glow worms catch flies... there is a bit of a ick factor but it is incredible! I highly recommend this tour. If you can get the smaller van experience versus a bus like we did, all the better. Less time spent waiting for people and more time touring

          Some Drivers Excellent! Others Not.
My review is mixed. Pros Initial communication was responsive via email. They were willing to build a trip per my requests which I appreciated. Some drivers were informative, friendly and interesting - I think I had 5 different drivers in 2 days. Cons Other drivers were not interesting or they drove too fast or took you around to non interesting places The communication about my itinerary (which was somewhat complicated) was lacking. There was no detail in it. For example I was going to the spa and had no idea how long I would be there, when I would go nor if I had time to change at my hotel before I went. That evening they sent a cab driver to pick me up for one of my activities when I was supposed to be on the Mercedes small bus vans- luckily the cab driver was delightful but I felt a bit vulnerable as a single older woman. I had 2 days with flexi and the first driver seemed clueless about what I was doing. I was confused and anxious when he said he was taking another person to Hobbiton and I was going elsewhere -as I had signed up for Hobbitown I was concerned! The good news is I got there the next day but I needlessly worried I wasn’t going to see it. They also rushed me when I got there - I had about 5 minutes to explore the gift shop! I could have been picked up earlier and had more time.

          Poor planning
The driver was amazing. However for the extended version to Polynesian spa we only had 1 hour there. We had to pick up other folks from a tour and spent 1 hour waiting for them at hobbiton. Not worth the money.

          Look elsewhere
I had a very unpleasant experience with this company. I tried to contact the company per my tour guide's suggestion and was met with very curt responses. The tour itself to Rotorua was great, but the Geothermal experience was not worth it and very overpriced. Looking online, it looks like there are many other cheaper options available.

We had a wonderful experience taking the FlexiTours trip to Hobbiton from Auckland. Phillipa made the booking process easy. We were assured that even if there were only the two of us, the tour would run. (The first company we booked with cancelled us due to not having sufficient bookings to run the tour). It was great to be picked up and returned to our accommodation. Fran, our driver, was lovely and provided a lot of interesting information about NZ on the way to Hobbiton. The tour of Hobbiton exceeded our expectations and was very well organised. It was handy to have a tour that started later in the morning. High recommend FlexiTours and visiting Hobbiton.

Very good tour and they also picked up/dropped my uncle off from home, wich was a bonus. My uncle enjoyed the tour and it was a good experience for him. I'll definitely book with Flexitours next time when my family come to NZ.

Thank you for your review - We were happy to pickup and drop off your uncle. We know that finding your way to a meeting point can be difficult particularly if English is not your first language and we have a team of taxis and our own shuttles. There is sometimes a small charge if the distance is large, but it is always less than a regular Uber or Taxi

I will preface this review by stating that I am an award winning travel blogger and world traveler. I have taken full day trips to destinations all over the world including recent tours in Australia and New Zealand. I booked this tour since we had a limited amount of time in New Zealand, my husband wanted to go to Hobbiton and I had an interest in Rotorua. Our first driver was nice but it should be made clear that both drivers were drivers-not tour guides. Their job was to drive as fast as possible to these locations which are a few hours from Auckland. There was limited information given and no dialogue with passengers on the locations we passed or were visiting. Our first stop 2 hours after pick up was Hobbiton. We were told to meet our driver at 11am after the tour. However, the tour was still going on at 11am after our drinks in the Green Lantern so we missed the end of the tour. We were heading to Rotorua next. I heard from other travelers that Maori cultural shows took place there so I asked our driver if we would be able to see them. He told me that the show was at 12.15pm, cost $15 extra, that we would not get there in time and that we were not "booked in" to see the show. I was very disappointed to hear this. I would have happily paid the extra $15 to see a show. When we arrived at Te Puia in Rotorua, the driver obtained our tickets from the admissions area. Once inside he mentioned that there were free guided tours every hour. We only had 10 minutes to try to eat to catch the 1pm tour so he suggested the 2pm tour. However, he informed us that the tours lasted for over 1 hour and we were instructed to meet a new driver by 3pm outside. Therefore, we were left to tour the property on our own. The whole day seemed rushed and felt as if we were being shuffled around to different places and drivers. While in Te Puia, we noticed people entering the performance building. When we asked about this we were told there was a show starting at 1.15pm but that it was sold out. Our driver never mentioned any additional shows so I was upset that we missed the opportunity to see 2 shows. The next show was at 3.15pm but we were scheduled to leave at 3pm. Why wouldn't the drivers/FlexiToursNZ inform us of the times and opportunities to see shows while at Te Puia? Why leave travelers at this destination for over 2 hours but not time the arrival or departures so that attendees can see at least 1 show? After Te Puia we had a new driver. A lady that was rude to us from the moment we got on the bus. She drove past 2 places in Rotorua before speeding down the highway back to Auckland. The van had no shock absorbency and we were all being bounced up and down over every bump on the road for 4 hours! Yes it took 4 hours to return to our hotel after leaving Te Puia at 3pm. And, she only made 1 stop at bathrooms in a parking lot. The stop wasn't even at a convenience store or gas station where we could buy water or a snack and no water was provided to us while on this tour. We spent 12 hours and barely saw anything after visiting 2 places, one place without any guided information. When I sent my concerns to FleziToursNZ, their response was very defensive. I was surprised that a tour company would not take into consideration a review and feedback from an experienced traveler. This tour cost $250 per person and compared to all the tours we took in Australia and New Zealand it had the worst value for the money.

It is really amazing to me that you found reasons to complain when othr people on exaclty the same coach and with same drivers have told me about the wonderful information given on the tour - only spoiled by one customer ( who talked over the drivers constantly) As far as the Maori Concert was concerned - this costs extra and on most days ( unless there is a cruise ship in the Tauranga harbour it is not on at a time that you would fit in with your tour and is therefore not part of the standard offering, You could have told your driver you wanted to add this and we would have done this for you for a fee of $15 per person - BUT you did not ask as there were extra concerts on the day you were there Your comment about our late model Mercedes with luxury fit out is an absolute mistruth - All of them have the latest technology can supply in suspension and shock obsorbers. You were offerred the opportunity to get out and walk in the Redwood forest and other areas in Rotorua but did not want to get out. You contacted me after the tour and tried to demand a refund or discount because you are a proffesional blogger - I believed this was veiled threat that because you are a blooger you would try to blacken our companies name if we did not bow to your threats and giver you a cheap tour - for no reason other than you would blacken our reputation The hundreds of outstanding reviewes and thousands of satisfied customers who come back and refer friends to us tell me that your response and attempt to critcise what you received is more about the fact that I would not give you a refund than any real susbstance in your complaint. You told my first driver that you did not want to explore Te Puia - You chose not to go on the guided tour which was available and strangley enough while other people walked the convenience shop near where you stopped in Matamata to get water - you did not - You also turned down the opportunity to get an icecream in the town You do not mention the 5 star buffet lunch which you were served at Te Puia or the wonderful guided tour at Hobbiton. In your email to me all you mentioned was that the tour was over priced and you wanted some money back. Our drivers give a lot of information and comentary while taking you places - but I have feedback from both the drivers you were with that it was difficult becasue someone was constantly talking over them I am sorry you were not happy - but we know our tours are great value for moeny and our vehicles are comfortable

The trip lived up to our expectations and was the highlight of our New Zealand visit. The drive was made more enjoyable with Darryl's commentary. Great lunch at Rotorua and both visits were well organized.

I will preface by saying this is a reputable company and I feel you can book with confidence. This is more about my experience which involved bad luck and timing.
As they get into Summer season, extra driver/guides need to be hired and more buses are put on the road. I understand this is becoming more difficult for many companies. Our driver was a retired business man starting his second season. Unfortunately his inexperience really came through on this trip. Driving was a little aggressive but the commentary was the most annoying. He was trying hard, but he felt he needed to talk every minute of the tour, which actually would have been fine if he wasn't saying the same thing 3,4 or 5 times even. He may have been doing it to assist some of the passengers who did not know enough English. Unfortunately this still did not work as some still did not understand the instructions and we ended up leaving Hobbiton late. Our bus was one of the older ones pushing 600k on the odometer, unfortunately going up the big hill before Rotorua, the engine overheated and we had to pull over to the side for it to cool down making our arrival even later into Rotorua. The main reason we booked this tour was to be able to experience the Hangi lunch(recommended) and the cultural show(recommended). Unfortunately, due to the delays, we had to wolf down an incredible lunch in 15 minutes. We did make the show and though rushed managed to get the geysers and kiwi bird in before having to head back.
The biggest disappointment was having paid so much money and not having time to enjoy the fabulous lunch or tour the site in a leisurely manner. Things happen when you travel, the guide will get better and not be as flustered now having the experience, the company has a good relationship with the Mercedes dealership so they drop everything to come out and fix the guard that was jarred loose and everybody got home safely which is what is most important.........
the strength of the company is the differentiated tours they offer in a smaller group size, that is worth it if you find something you like.

Hi - I am sorry you did not have as great a day - but occasionally thinks do not go exactly as planned. The engine issue was caused by the Radiator cover slipping and catching the fan - This was not becasue of the mileage on the engine but a mechanics mistake when the vehicle was last serviced. The reason the vehicle struggled up the hill was because it had gone into what is affectionately called "limp home mode". This is a setting which allows the vehicle to still run and get you to your destination but with very limited power and mean the engine is not damaged. Your comments about your driver are interesting only in that he is the person who has the most rave reviews of any driver on Trip Advisor - but like everything - not everyone likes the same thing. I am glad you enjoyed your lunch, but I am sorry you had to rush it and you are correct about our relationship with Mercedes in Rotorua - Some of our fleet is based in Rotorua and regularly serviced by them and becasue of this they know and understand our business and help when they can. Fortunately they are not often called on to do this. I hope the rest of your holiday went smoothly and you had a good time

With one full day to get the most out of the area around Auckland I booked with Flexitours. The day was torrential with rain but our driver got us safely to Hobbiton and Rotorua for sightseeing in terrible traffic and weather conditions. She was full of information about the areas we travelled through and what we would be seeing. What others might take for brusk, I took for efficient, informed, and when you got right down to it, kind.
Of note, the timings go fast. If you want the most out of the Rotorua visit, don't daly over the terrific smorg so you have time to walk the trails.

My tour with flexi tours was amazing. Easy booking and picked up at my accomodation by our friendly driver Daryl who made sure we all got to know each other and kept us entertained with lots of information on the drive to Te Puia.
We joined a walking tour then added on the cultural performance which I would 100% recommend doing.
The buffet lunch was lovely at He Puia and we arrived at Hobbiton with time to spare to look around the gift shop and grab a coffee.
Hobbiton itself was amazing and a must do if you are in the area.

Thanks Daryl for a great first day in NZ!

I think this is the perfect tour to combine 2 destinations a ways away from Auckland in a day. I did a long tour of Waitomo a different day because I thought all 3 places in a day would be a bit cramped. Rotorua was very cool. The optional performance at Rotorua sounded fun but there is a very similar one in Auckland. Because I didn't choose the performance, I had enough time to go to the kiwi house long enough to see both of their kiwis in the habitat, plus got to leisurely stroll around the park. Buffet lunch had all of the cultural dishes that are surprisingly hard to find anywhere in New Zealand. Darryl was our driver/guide and he did a great job. Hobbitton was awesome. I took sooo many pictures of the 44 hobbitholes on the set. And there are several drinks to choose from at Green Dragon Inn.I had the dark ale which was really good.
