Everything ran so smoothly and communication with the company before the tour was exceptional, making sure we were picked up at the most convenient location. The tour was conducted as 2, morning and afternoon, with 2 different tour guides ensuring we had the most knowledgeable guides for the different environments. The stops and the commentary were all scenic and interesting.Written 26 August 2024
- kmclemons3140 contributionsWonderful Trip with Bush and Beach Tours! We had a fantastic tour with Bush and Beach tours. Our guide, Mairi, was excellent!! She had so much expertise on the flora, fauna and wildlife of the Auckland region. She was also extremely patient with our many questions about the region. We loved visiting Piha Beach, the Waitakere Ranges rain forest and the Arataki Visitor Centre. Piha beach is incredibly scenic and a wonderful sight to see if you’re visiting Auckland. Everything was so well planned from pick up to drop off at the end of the trip. We even stopped for lunch at a delicious pie shop and had tea and biscuits at the end of the tour. This was a 10/10 experience and I would highly recommend the tour for those looking to explore the surrounding areas of Auckland.Written 24 August 2024
- DeannaCow0 contributionsHobbits and Glow WormsMichelle and Melvin made our tour very enjoyable. We learned a lot about the history of New Zealand and were very knowledgeable and answered many questions. Lunch at the Green Dragon was very good and the glow worms were amazing!Written 17 August 2024

Ben was also an amazing guide through the rainforest, pointing out many interesting things and giving a lot of wider context. Great to have the time at the beach at the end too. Would definitely recommend!Written 17 August 2024

We had Jason and Damion as drivers, and they were both friendly and helpful as well as telling all about the places we visited and the country in general. - 122reubenj0 contributionsWorth the priceThe tour operator showed up on time in a clean van. The operator offered pick up points at various locations throughout the CBD for our convenience. The tour guides Aykla and driver Justin were friendly and knowledgeable about the area, nature and history of the region. We had three different stops for bathroom breaks and a well planned rainforest walk. Pija Beach was stunning and our tour operators offered us tea and biscuits at the beach which was a very nice touch. Certainly recommend this tour operator for their efficiency and friendly staff.Written 3 August 2024
- Kelly G0 contributionsGreat memories!I booked this tour last minute, hoping to see more of New Zealands beauty without having to go too far from the city. This tour did just that! We did a tranquil walk through the rainforest, learning about the native and foreign plants & animals of New Zealand. Being surrounded by so much greenery in the middle of winter was so enjoyable. Afterward, we went to Piha beach and had beautiful views of the ocean. Murray, our guide, shared so much history about the areas. You can tell he has so much love and respect for the region. As an added part of the tour (which I enjoyed just as much as the stunning views), Murray had prepared home made cookies, some Manuka honey for trying, and hot teas for the group to warm up with after being in the crisp beach air. It was so nice sharing that moment with fellow travelers. Thank you for the wonderful memories!Written 3 August 2024
- laurawF6929KV0 contributionsGreat way to visit Auckland!Wonderful tour! Great guides who were fun, helpful & informative. Doing both tours together was great contrast of city and nature. Loved sering more of the city which is not easy in Auckland and then the visit to rainforest and western beach was fantastic. Great company who were completely professional and could not have been nicer@Written 18 July 2024

We went over to New Zealand, from Scotland, for a family wedding. One of the things we really wanted to cross off the bucket list while over there was to visit hobbiton. We didn’t want to go all the way there and not do it. To be honest when I started trying to book the excursion I thought it was quite expensive. It was around $850nzd for our family of four - and after having a big discussion we decided to just go for it. It was the one thing we wanted to do and we didn’t know if we’d ever get the chance to come back…….And I have to say it was well worth the money!!!! I think our tour guides name was Murray (sorry, I’m writing this review a few months later! So apologies if the name is wrong) but he was just fantastic. We were picked up promptly at the scheduled time and the drive to hobbiton was just so informative. I didn’t realise we’d learn so much about the history of New Zealand so that was such a treat. Hobbiton itself was magical - the tours were run so well. We had lunch included in our price in the outside marquee and it was just excellent - honestly couldn’t fault it. My little boy said it was the best chicken drumsticks he’s ever tasted lol. We’re so glad we booked with bush and beach and would really really recommend it to anyone considering an excursion to Hobbiton from Auckland

It was a wonderful day trip. Pick up and drop off from our hotel was seamless; the guide (Damien) was friendly and informative. He made a real effort to appeal to everyone on the trip (from 16 years to 60+). Hobbiton is magic if you are a LOTR fan. And the lunch was just magnificent (don't eat beforehand). We got stuck in Auckland traffic on the way back in but such is life!

Great tour! Bush & beach we’re so helpful from when we booked answering any questions / queries and the driver, Wayne was excellent! He made the 2 and a half hour journey fun and interesting telling us lots of facts about New Zealand as well as entertaining us with jokes. He’s a great guy. Hobbiton was amazing, my boyfriend is a fan of the movies and books however I haven’t seen/ read any of them but still thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The lunch was amazing too, so many options and very tasty. Would recommend! 😀

What can i say? Hobbiton was magical! If you love LOTR, it’s a must! The guide there was a lot of fun and full of interesting information. The drink and lunch were rushed, and the usual not memorable buffet. I would skip it next time and just bring a sandwich for the ride back.
The driver and van left much to be desired. He was unenthusiastic, spoke little, and mumbled. The only time hespoke up was when talking about the high cost if housing in auckland, and how his daughter could not afford a house. Also, our voucher said we would be picked up at 7, but he arrived before 645! We had gone to a convenience store for some breakfast, and he was gone when we got back at 650! Thankfully someone else picked us up and helped us join the van. The van had very small seats, and the rise was very bumpy because of his erratic driving. Finally, he did not know where our hotel was, and dropped my husband off 1/2 mile away.
In summary, hobbiton was wonderful, but i would use another provider to get there

Wayne was a lot of fun and his knowledge of Maori culture and explanations and meaning of Maori names was invaluable. The bus was super comfortable. Hobberton movie set tour was such a great experience and we would highly recommend it even if not a Lord of the Rings fan. Our tour guide Izzie was so well versed in all the movies and we learnt so much about how the movie was made. All in all it was an awesome day

Visiting Hobbiton is a must for fans of Peter Jackson's movies, even for only the casual fan. This tour was an excellent way to travel to and from the site. (Docents on site do the actual tour of the movie set). I would highly recommend this tour as opposed to others because of the opportunity to grab a drink at the green dragon and eat a well-catered buffet-style lunch. Our driver (who picked us up at a very convenient location in the Auckland CBD), was well-informed not just about all things Tolkien, but local history as well. Her commentary on the drive out to the site was interesting and informative. The ride back had significantly less commentary, which was appreciated since it gave us time to just enjoy the lovely scenery.

This was an excellent way of getting from Auckland to Rotorua. Great commentary on route, and Hobbiton was brilliant, especially with the newly-opened Hobbit-holes, which could be seen internally, which showed the leel of detail, and care given in to the design.
Lunch was superb. A buffet, but with an excellent range of food, all cooked very well. This could easily be your main meal of the day, which we were not expecting at all.

Exploring Hobbiton and Glow Worm Cave with Damon was an unforgettable adventure. His passion and storytelling skills not only brought the sites to life but also provided insights into New Zealand's rich history and culture. Damon's informative narration made the tour both enjoyable and educational. Plus, the convenience of being picked up and dropped off at our hotel, coupled with an excellent lunch made the experience truly seamless. Overall, the tour left us with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and heritage of New Zealand.

I got a voucher for this tour from my parents for Christmas having been a long-time LOTR fan and it did not disappoint! Got picked up at sky city by Wayne and then drove down to Matamata, he is a hilarious guy and kept up the commentary and the jokes the whole way. Loved the tour and the lunch and free drink. Bush and Beach also threw in Waitomo Caves for free which was just spectacular. Fortunately was able to go in August and on the day before NZ went back into Covid lockdown. Thanks for everything, was heaps of fun and hope to join you guys again soon.

The drive was a bit long, but our Bull & Beach driver, Wayne, kept us entertained with stories, jokes and pointing out local things. He also had a rest stop for us in both directions. Hobbiton was a special place, even for those who aren’t dyed-in-the-wool Tolkien fans. The scenery os spectacular, the guide was perfect and the food great.

Hi there, can I check if you have an option for a tour from Auckland to Waitomo & Hobitton and then stopping at Rotorua? If you do, may I ask how much is one pax for 3rd Dec 2018? We have 3 people. Thank you very much.
Written 16 November 2018
Probably but you need to ask the tour provider directly

I had to contact the tour operator after booking the tour on Viator to find out the pickup point for us. It would probably be best if you contact them directly. The tour operator is Bush and Beach. You can check their website for contact info. If they do not pickup at your hotel, the closest pickup would probably be pretty close. Our pickup was just across the street from where we were staying.

We are arriving on NCL at 8 am. Is there a cruise port pickup?
Written 17 October 2018
I was picked up in the Britomart area of Auckland which is walking distance to the cruise ship dock. I had to contact the tour operator directly to find out the pickup location. So the chances are pretty good that they pickup there. I booked my tour through Viator and the tour operator was Bush and Beach, I would contact them directly to be sure. Their phone number is +64 9 837 4130.

No, it's all easy walking on well-made paths. You could probably walk it in about 15 minutes if you didn't stop to take photos.
Written 12 August 2018
It depends which tour you're talking about. Just the tour of the Hobbiton set itself is about an hour. Our tour included a drink and lunch and started and ended in Auckland (which is 2-3 hours away from Matamata (Hobbiton)) I was picked up from my hotel about 6:45am and got back about 3pm I think. So it's basically a full day but plenty of time for something in the evening if you want.
