About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Joaquin s0 contributionsNice boat ride but the departure is too late in the dayThe boat ride is enjoyable and the boat crew are friendly but If you’re a serious bird photographer this tour is not for you, it departs at 9am but by the time you arrive and the ranger gives his briefing it is 10:30 giving you 4 hours to explore but by then the golden hours of photography are over and it is harsh light (on a sunny day) with really bad heat distortion even on a mild temperature day. The feeding stations on the Island are almost all on the side of the trails where the sun rises so you are shooting directly into the sun. It would be much better to stay overnight on the Island or arrive on a private charter. This tour is really bad for bird photography and mostly intended for casual explorers. If it departed at 7:30am it would be perfectWritten 13 March 2025
- JrnyJunkie0 contributionsLoved, loved, loved this experience1We had a wonderful time on our sailboat. The skipper and his crews of one other person did a fantastic job of caring for us. It was so much fun being able to steer the ship. Our weather was a bit overcast, but perhaps better than a strong hot sun.Written 8 March 2025

- GO2HI0 contributionsTreading waterA fabulous, full day (9:30am to 5:30pm out on the water. Couple of hours at Man ‘o War island (where lunch is surprisingly good at the winery!) - MrsCockburn0 contributionsA definite must do when in Auckland. What an absolute privilege to be able to visit the beautiful island of Rotorua. Our ferry from Auckland was comfortable and right on schedule. Plenty of time to enjoy the island and its beaches. Take a picnic (remember to take all your rubbish off the island with you! ) and plenty of water. There is a small shop on island but it’s only open for a short amount of time and has some souvenirs and a small selection of juice/ice lollies. Would definitely recommend this trip!Written 26 February 2025
- O3591FRemilyb0 contributionsTourist trap!!You can buy round trip ferry ticket for $60 NZD and then bus to a vineyard easily ...how is this offering anything more?? If I'm wrong correct me but this is just an overpriced ferry that doesn't even offer food or drinks.Written 26 February 2025

- JohnJ5830 contributionsSailing with no commentaryVery disappointing experience. The captain didn’t say anything about Auckland, the history, the Harbor, etc. He was silent most of the time. He’s a nice guy and when you ask him questions, he would answer them, but we didn’t know what to ask. One of the appetizers served had diced beet in juices. They served that without napkins in your hand and people were spilling it on them themselves. Beats of course stain clothes and I’m sure some won’t be able to get those stains out. Napkins came out too late. In the future hand out the napkins first! The chicken Caesar was terrible. The lamb was very good. Everything else served was average at best.Written 21 February 2025
- Jonathan C0 contributionsExplore Sailboat Chaos18 guess crammed onto a 51 ft sailboat does NOT mean much elbow room!! The details available beforehand were sketchy in the extreme- half the group were expecting a motorised cruise under cover. It turns out this was true both ways as the captain and crew manfully tried to cope with a lack of info ( who ordered which meals etc) and proper supplies. Very disappointingly given the supposedly premium nature of the trip, only the first drink was included, with everything chargeable thereafter. Within 30 minutes the rosé was finished with nothing else half drinkable for the rest of the two and a half hours! We were last to be served food and found someone else had taken our order. The sailing itself was fun , with plenty of 45degree list in a strong breeze; the tack back was enjoyable. Good, long suffering skipper and crew let down by very poor logistical support.Written 21 February 2025
- Enthusiasm2go0 contributionsMehThe skipper was totally detached from the passengers. The boat ride was so slow it was at walking speed. The sights of Auckland were lovely, though!Written 17 February 2025
- 510nicoleo0 contributionsBird watching for the non-bird watchers - worth it!My cousin and I are not at all bird watchers, but this trip was breathtaking and is not one to be missed. The island is stunning, the volunteer guides are so knowledgeable not only about the birds but able the trees and the land itself, and it's a lovely hike to the top to see gorgeous views of the water and surroundings islands. This was one of our favorite unexpected adventures booked for us through FirstLight Travel.Written 17 February 2025

This is a great value for money experience and an enjoyable way to see the harbor and learn about this class of sailboats. It was more thrilling than I expected and more physical for those that wanted that experience (i.e., leaning and hoisting sails on command). If you want to sit and enjoy along the side of the ship, you can definitely do that. My kids enjoyed it (especially when we went under the Auckland Bridge and when we were cruising full speed in the harbor and leaning F A R to one side). Our photos and videos look fantastic. The crew (staff) was friendly, booking was straight-forward and it was easy to find the boarding point. If this looks like somehting you're interested in - go for it. My kids are 10 and it was a fantastic way to get to know Auckland.

Any selling trip is regulated by how much winds present and this one's no exception. The wind was seven or eight knots so we did get some speed up but I was hoping that on a racing yacht we would be able to experience some serious speed. They had us grind and anyone who wanted to could steer the boat, clearly the crew was exceptionally pleasant but they had been doing this for months 2 or 3 times a day.

Crew were great and it was a delight being on a sailboat built for such speed. While the wind was not completely cooperative, it was good enough for us to get a first had experience of sailing an America’s Cup boat. I learned a lot about the design differences with most sailboats and my husband loved taking the helm. We are both avid sailors and this was the most fun thing we did in Auckland.

Last April we boarded a cruise from Sydney, Australia, that stopped in New Zealand, Tahiti, and ended in Honolulu. We rarely take excursions while on a cruise, but as a person who loved to sail years ago, the chance to sail on an America's Cup racing boat through the Aukland harbour sounded too exciting to pass up. We booked directly through the Explorer group, which seemed sensible and was cheaper than booking through the ship, of course. The reason we decided to travel from Vancouver to Australia and New Zealand this year, is because I am going blind. I have very little sight left, so we knew that time was running out for me to see this distant part of the world. Our cruise ship docked right in the Aukland harbour, and we walked by to see our ship in the morning. Our tour was booked for 1 p.m. We were impressed with the size of the boat and had a pleasant chat about the afternoon tour with one of the crew members working onboard. We raced around several blocks of downtown Aukland, then back to our ship so we could dress for our tour. We arrived on time, to find only one, sad-looking, person at the top of the marina. A young woman informed us that the Tour Was Cancelled! We were dumbstruck. We asked the reason, expecting an emergency or onboard malfunction, but they said that there were not enough people signed up!! How is this our problem? We booked weeks ago, paid in full, and travelled half way around the world, for my last chance to see New Zealand, from a sailing ship or from anywhere!! We will never be back there again, and to make matters worse, they must have known, days earlier, or at least That Day, that they might decide not to sail. Instead they told us less than 3 hours before our cruise was to leave N.Z.! We could have booked any number of tours to at least see the local sites, but now it was too late! All the tour operators were gone and any afternoon buses etc. were full. How incredibly thoughtless, callous and selfish can this company be?! It's what they advertise and at least there were 5 people signed up - so what if you make a little less profit for a 2 hour tour?! It is not that they couldn't sail, they just couldn't be bothered for too few people. Again, not my problem - and you took my money weeks ago. The poor young woman who had no answers (she was left there on her own. We were told that no employees or crew were available to speak with us...) and just had to repeat the bad news, kept assuring us that we would get a "full refund". Yes, I said, that is My money - you're not giving me anything. In fact you're taking away our only chance to sail or explore any part of Aukland. It sounded good on paper - a longtime dream finally realized, but NO. Buyer beware! Apparently they have plenty of business, so they don't care who they disappoint, and thus this poor review might make little difference, but I write so future tourists will weigh the risks. I hope you are treated much better than this.

Warning! If you are coming on a cruise ship be very careful. I booked this at 2pm because Royal Carribean told me the ship departed at 5:30 so I deduced that I had plenty of of time for this activity only to be told on the boat that the last shuttle bus was at 4pm. Explor had zero sympathy and I lost my money. Not happy

Hi michaelm951 - we are sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately when tickets are purchased through third parties any issues must be resolved directly with them. If this was through the cruise ship directly then they should have had a better understanding of the schedule and the time required to complete an experience they are offering their guests. However, we would expect our team to respond with empathy and assist as much as possible. We will look into the schedule with Royal Caribbean to ensure this doesn't happen again.

I was working in Auckland and had a few hours free on the last day. I arranged to meet a friend we booked in advance. I looked at the T&C's and saw that it could take some time to confirm, which was fair. I got a confirmation late the evening before for an 11am departure the next day. We turned up on time to find out the trip had been cancelled due to the "high winds and adverse sea state. Apparently the email had been send at approx 9:20 that morning after I had left to travel to the harbour. Although the lady at the desk said she tried to phone me, I had no missed call. Because I was flying home later that evening the later trip was not suitable. I have worked on boats most my life. Because of this I checked the forecast on the previous night and again the morning of the trip and the forecast was for 15 knots (Moderate Breeze) and I checked local conditions when I arrived at the harbour and it was actually approx 7-10 knots (Gentle Breeze). I subsequently took another boat trip (which was a far less sea capable boat and was, of course, still running) and the weather had even eased to to a Light Breeze. So I wasted my valuable 1/2 day, with so many great things I could have done in Auckland and I had to scramble to arrange something alternative. Looking at the reviews, it seems cancelling happens regularly if the tour operator doesn't get enough participants to make it worthwhile. I am sure others than are not as experienced with the sea would have accepted the excuse, but I am certain it was because they couldn't fill the places Unless you have lots of time to hang around and are willing to wait until they have enough participants, I would avoid. Looks great but don't really care about customers if it doesn't suit them.

It was more fun than expected. I thought it might be a real tame and boring ride around the harbor but they actually got the boat up to a fairly exciting speed with it leaned right over. We were lucky to have a perfect day with a nice breeze and clear skies. I wouldn't bother if its pouring rain or dead calm day. Anyone who wanted were able to participate as crew by manning the hand cranks to hoist and lower the sails as well as driving for a bit. Tip... there is no toilet on the boat so make sure to go before boarding. The crew were fun and gave lots of interesteing info about the boat, sailing, racing etc. Well worth it!

An amazing experience. The feeling of sailing in a boat race especially for those like us who never tourism that experience is unforgettable. If you add to this the possibility of participating in the helm or hoisting the sails is really amazing. Spectacular images of Auckland Bay.

A great sail on a windy day. The crew did of sailing the boat with vigor while keeping everyone (relatively) dry. Good weather gear made the trip comfortable, even with a rain shower.

Spur of the moment on a glorious morning in early December and so well worth it. Fun crew. Involved and not just sitting around. Sails up and flying along dodging container ships and other cruise vessels. 2 hours went by in a flash. I guess thebexperience will depend on the weather - we had clear sky, sun, warmth and light to moderate winds, so probably pretty ideal - and it might seem a little expensive but just go for it...you will not regret it.

Is it possible to be guaranteed that we would be on NZL41? We are sailors and would love to sail on an actual 12 meter that was raced in the America's Cup. Please let me know as I want to get this booked. Thanks.
