Overview
Ensure a memorable experience on the Outer Great Barrier Reef on this full-day, all-inclusive cruise aboard a catamaran. Head for Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Outer Reef and plunge into the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef by snorkeling amongst its rich marine life. If you have selected the option, you can also include an introductory or certified dive. Includes morning and afternoon tea, as well as a buffet lunch.
What to Expect
Make your way directly to Seastar on E Finger at the northern side of the Cairns Marina (adjacent to the easily visible “Salt House” restaurant). On arrival you will be welcomed by your captain before stepping aboard Seastar to meet your crew.
Check-in is on-board after which you may enjoy a coffee or tea with delicious muffins. All equipment is provided and your crew will assist you with fitting the correct size snorkel or dive equipment bringing this to you. Wet suits or stinger suits are hung on your own personal hanger.
Departing Cairns, the safety briefing explains the various safety systems and procedures on-board. A snorkel demonstration follows to ensure all are aware of the equipment, health risks of snorkelling, things to be aware of at the reef, how the day will run and where to find crew. Then the scuba briefing details in water skills.
Arriving at the world-famous Michaelmas Cay, there is a site briefing then you gather your equipment, organise a buoyancy vest or noodle, collect your suit, then make the short ferry trip to Cairn’s largest sand cay island. Experienced or novice, the calm waters of the beach is the best location to commence your guided snorkel tour. The tour guides depart in small groups, out over shallow reef waters towing a life ring. Your guide will assist you with your equipment and although the high-quality mask and snorkel are easy to fit, novice snorkellers have more time in the shallow water to make final adjustments. Introductory divers commence their dive from Seastar under the supervision of our caring instructors. After your dive or snorkel excursion, there is ample time to revisit the reef with you snorkel buddy.
With two good hours of diving or snorkelling, you have an appetite. Feast on a delicious buffet of hot and cold dishes, including vegetarian options with plenty of salads, fresh fruits, and bread. Cold drinks are also available for purchase. When finished Seastar departs for Hastings Reef on the very outer of the Great Barrier Reef.
A very different reef to Michaelmas. Again, a site briefing is given before you re-enter the water. Snorkelling and diving commence from Seastar, the guided snorkel tours first, then diving where experienced certified divers may travel to the “Wild Side” in the tender and return dive to the Seastar. Afterwards, there is ample time to again revisit this reef with you snorkel buddy.
Confidence gained at Michaelmas Cay, snorkellers are often taken to the “Wild Side” abundant with vibrant fish and coral, deep coral canyons, giant coral formations, colourful reef fish, anemones, sea turtles, cheeky little reef sharks and deep water.
With another two good hours of snorkelling and diving, it is time to return to Seastar. While enjoying the waiting afternoon tea waiting with delicious cakes and fresh fruit, the safety head count is conducted and with all signed back on-board, Seastar returns to Cairns.
