Atherton Tablelands Food and Wine Tour from Cairns
From US$142.93
Overview
Explore the Atherton Tablelands from a culinary perspective on this day trip from Cairns. With a guide, journey to off-the-beaten-path locations where you’ll visit a coffee plantation, macadamia nut and dairy farms, and a winery for samples of cheese, chocolate, tropical wine and more. Stop at natural attractions like the Curtain Fig Tree and Lake Barrine in Crater Lakes National Park, and enjoy a seafood lunch at a local pub. This tour is limited to 20 people.
What to Expect
After hotel pickup by minicoach in Cairns and the Northern Beaches, your Atherton Tablelands day trip begins with the drive south into the hills. Make a stop in Crater Lakes National Park to check out Lake Barrine, a volcanic lake with an elevation of 2,395 feet (730 meters). With your guide, take a short walk through the area surrounding the lake, and learn about its 1,000-year-old twin Kauri pines.

Visit an 80-year-old tea house to admire views of Lake Barrine while you enjoy a morning snack on the balcony—a Devonshire tea that includes locally grown coffee or tea and freshly baked scones. Then return to the minicoach to continue your tour, passing by historical towns like Yungaburra, Tolga, Atherton and Mareeba and stopping at various local farms for a behind-the-scenes look at the different operations.

Enjoy an exclusive experience at a macadamia nut farm, tour a coffee plantation and visit a dairy farm for tastings of cheese and handcrafted chocolate. At each stop, hear about different production techniques and browse packaged goods for sale that make excellent gifts.

Next, visit a historical pub for a seafood lunch, and then continue to a winery that produces unique tropical wines made from fruits like mango, bush cherry, lychee, mulberry and passion fruit. Then head to the Curtain Fig Tree for a photo op of this fascinating strangler fig—one of the tallest in northern Queensland—that grows on top of a host tree with aerial roots that measure 49 feet (15 meters) long.

Your day trip of local culinary delights and interesting narration ends with the return drive to Cairns and the Northern Beaches for hotel drop-off.

My lunch included prawns and fish. You can order something else off the menu for your child, just to be sure s/he is safe. The restaurant was great and had a nice, casual atmosphere.
