Atherton Tablelands Rain Forest by Night from Cairns
From US$145.88
Overview
The lakes, rain forest, and waterfalls of the Atherton Tablelands harbor an incredible variety of wildlife, all just an hour's drive from Cairns. On this tour, enjoy a rare opportunity to hike through the jungle both during the day and at night, and spot nocturnal creatures, such as platypus, possums, owls, and Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo.
What to Expect
After pickup from your Cairns hotel, set out on the approximately 1-hour drive into the Atherton Tablelands region. Start your tour by with an afternoon walk through the rain forest, looking out for tropical birds, butterflies, and flying foxes or fruit bats. Stop to admire natural wonders, including ancient kauri pine trees, the Curtain Fig Tree, and Barrine Crater Lake. Then, enjoy afternoon tea at a lakeside teahouse.

Continue your tour with a sunset walk to spot platypus, which are most often seen at sundown, before heading to a traditional country restaurant for dinner. After nightfall, follow your guide on a thrilling rain forest hike by torchlight, and look out for nocturnal wildlife, including green geckos, Lumholtz’s tree kangaroos, gliding possums, frogs, owls, and tiny ringtail possums.

Back in Cairns, your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Best tour in Australia!

I really lucked out with this tour, having a super small group and a very knowledgeable guide (PhD in Tropical Ecology!). We saw so many animals, nearly 30 species in just the one tour. Wallabies, platypus, possums, bats, birds, and more! The best tour I...More

Thanks Kim. We are so lucky living here as there is so much wildlife out there and when you have someone like Tapio as your guide you really get to see it, and learn about it.

Paul can find the platypus! And lots more…

The first time we went to Australia, we were frequently told that the most interesting wildlife emerged at night, but we were unlikely to see any of these nocturnal animals in the wild. On a return to Australia in July, however, we were determined to...More

I can never guarantee we will see a Platypus but we have a great place to try and find then and luckily we usually do it is such a special place here. Thanks for the recommendation.

Wonderful tour!

This is an excellent tour if your main objective is to see wild life in and around Cairns, the forest and tablelands. It provided many more options than a rainforest-only type tour. On this you will likely see wallabies in the suburbs, tree kangaroos near...More

Everything about his tour was unique from start to finish. The small group size was definitely a plus as we were able to move quickly from one spot to another. They came to pick everyone up at their hotel which was awesome. Paul was our...More

Cheers Kelly. Thanks for the recommendations. Our roads do test people’s resilience sometimes. But the area they take you to is so worth it, as you discovered!

Amazing tour with a knowledgeable enthusiastic guide

We were kindly picked up from our apartment in Earlsville and were off on an action packed trip. We saw lots of hard to find animals and heard all about their habits and quirks. Paul really knows where to look to find animals of all...More

No real hiking at all. There are several stops with no long walks at all. I would estimate all of them together at no more than 1.5-2 miles.

Paul uses a minivan, so plenty of space for four of you, we stayed in Palm Cove and pick up was not a problem, slightly earlier than he advertises on his website, at 13:00
