Overview
The lakes, rain forest, and waterfalls of the Atherton Tablelands harbor an incredible variety of wildlife, all just an hour's drive from Cairns. On this tour, enjoy a rare opportunity to hike through the jungle both during the day and at night, and spot nocturnal creatures, such as platypus, possums, owls, and Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo.
What to Expect
After pickup from your Cairns hotel, set out on the approximately 1-hour drive into the Atherton Tablelands region. Start your tour by with an afternoon walk through the rain forest, looking out for tropical birds, butterflies, and flying foxes or fruit bats. Stop to admire natural wonders, including ancient kauri pine trees, the Curtain Fig Tree, and Barrine Crater Lake. Then, enjoy afternoon tea at a lakeside teahouse.

Continue your tour with a sunset walk to spot platypus, which are most often seen at sundown, before heading to a traditional country restaurant for dinner. After nightfall, follow your guide on a thrilling rain forest hike by torchlight, and look out for nocturnal wildlife, including green geckos, Lumholtz’s tree kangaroos, gliding possums, frogs, owls, and tiny ringtail possums.

Back in Cairns, your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Fantastic adventure exploring Australian wildlife

We spent 3 weeks in Australia and this trip was a real highlight. Paul our guide was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. We saw an array of animals and its such a thrill to spot them in the wild. We had to hunt hard for our...More

So glad you enjoyed our tour Mary. Thanks for the kind words. When it comes to looking for the Platypus persistence often helps and I don’t give up easy!

Excellent trip

Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Weather not brilliant but that didn't dampen the experience of seeing the day and night creatures. We saw tree kangaroo, platypus, possums, forest dragons, I forget what else. Having just a small group makes a big difference. Bring mosquito repellent!

So sorry to hear you did not enjoy your tour so much. You are right that the weather does play some part and wild animals are hard to predict. As for the lack of commentary from tour guide, thank you for letting me know. I...More

A fantastic introduction to Australian wildlife

This was one of the best excursions I've ever done (and I'm very widely travelled). The drive alone, up the mountain to the tableland beyond, was great. Walking in the rainforest in the day was interesting and informative but it was at dusk and later...More

A wonderful experience!

You don't need to be a wildlife enthusiast to enjoy this tour. It's definitely a different experience. I was looking for something to finish off my time in Carins when I came across this. This has been the best tour of the bunch that I...More

No real hiking at all. There are several stops with no long walks at all. I would estimate all of them together at no more than 1.5-2 miles.

Paul uses a minivan, so plenty of space for four of you, we stayed in Palm Cove and pick up was not a problem, slightly earlier than he advertises on his website, at 13:00
