About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- bluesrus700 contributionskeep awaythe office staff are the same as walking country so be wary if you are looking at their tours. i would not recommend them, they like to take your money and then treat you like crap. 1 star is too much for this companyWritten 8 September 2022
- Mike F0 contributionsFailure to return moneyI paid (in full) for this trip but due to Covid-19 have been unable to travel. I requested a refund in June 2021 but 7 months later the company has not returned my money. They have even stopped acknowledging my emails. I find this totally unacceptable as they have AU$1854 of my money.Written 24 January 2022
- J188UXmeganb0 contributionsNo Refund - company cancelled tripMade a booking in Aug 2021 of which was cancelled 2 Sep 2021 by the company. Still waiting for refund and keep getting given the runaround by the company. Happy to take the money and acknowledge they need to refund but am still waiting. Have contacted the company multiple times but keep getting blown off , last excuse " I have emailed the finance manager and unfortunately cannot advise you until I hear back". No customer service as that was 2 months ago.Written 18 January 2022
- Elisa J0 contributionsPoor communication and refusal to refundMy sister and I bought a day trip to Litchfield with Wayoutback Safaris at the start of 2020. We weren’t able to complete the trip due to the impacts of COVID but were promised a refund by the company at the time. It is now almost two years later and despite multiple disregarded emails, emails promising that a refund will be issued shortly and no contact phone number - in addition to an email from the CEO asking customers not to post complaints on social media due to the impacts of COVID on the company - we are yet to receive a refund. The company continues to operate, distributing a “skeleton staff” out of office email, all the while bringing out new tour offerings, but refuses to refund customers who are also struggling to contend with the impacts of COVID - the effects of the pandemic have affected the livelihoods of customers in addition to companies. I sympathise with companies struggling at this time but it is not fair to hold onto the funds of customers who are unable to experience a company’s services.Written 26 December 2021
- 612JaneB0 contributionsDisappointed, not as advertisedTaking this tour from Jabiru, we spent around 30 minutes on board driving to pick up other passengers before heading off to the Fall. I say Fall as, although it's advertised as going to Twin Falls - it did not. Twin Falls had been closed all season! No forewarning or price reduction. Onwards towards Jin Jin Falls the air-conditioner broke down. It was a sunny 37 degree day and we had about 90minutes drive time to get to the first stop, a toilet break. Inside the back cabin people were suffering with heat stroke and would have been at least 50 degrees. Had to get the guide to pull over as a young lady was overcome by the heat. Getting off the bus the air outside felt cool even though it was 37°! Another 25mins inside the hot box to get to the Falls felt like hours as the road was terrible, not the tours fault. The walk (read climb) to the Falls after being so hot was very difficult. Then the bus broke down 5mins after leaving the falls, but the guide and others managed to get it back on the road. Back on the hot bus for about an hour or so we met up with a substitute bus which thankfully had working air conditioning. I have requested a partial/full refund on several occasions, without success, as this tour was not as advertised and we had quite a distressing day.Written 7 October 2021
- LMAussiegal0 contributionsAuthentic Kakadu Experience 10/10Absolutely amazing and immersive small group experience! They are the real deal. With a max of 16 ppl in a 4wd bus, you’re guaranteed lots of adventure & going off the beaten track. They really know what they’re doing. We did their 3 Day/ 2 Night Kakadu tour. We can’t speak highly enough of our tour guide Leigh. His wealth of local knowledge across land and country, culture and animals was so educational and he has a great sense of humour & such a positive happy energy. He has so much passion and loves sharing everything he knows with his guests. Leigh was also very flexible and accommodating to our needs and the changing weather. Thank you so much Leigh for tweaking our itinerary to make everyone comfortable when it hit 39 degrees and we needed some extra swim time! Thank you so much!Written 29 September 2021
- CarolynandAllan0 contributionsBest tour guide we have ever had.My husband and I went on the Uluru, Kata Tjuta & Kings Canyon tour in early September 2021. Our guide was Robert (Robbie) and we were very impressed by his enthusiasm, passion, knowledge and consideration of each individual in his care. Robert put our safety first above all else in every situation; he didn’t rush us and he was always trying to make the trip our best experience possible - thank you Robert. We loved all the Spring wildflowers, Aboriginal art and culture, and the magnificent colours and rock shapes. The food on the trip was great and it was a wonderful experience.Written 17 September 2021
- stephencL4988BA0 contributionsCamping adventureWhat a wonderful trip. We travelled with friends and made new friends in our group. The scenery, the companionship, and the fun experiences along the way made it so memorable. But by far the best thing about this trip was Robert our tour guide, he worked tirelessly to show us our beautiful country, to feed us, to encourage us to do things we hadn’t planned (like spend the night in swags) and now we’re so grateful to him for an experience we could have missed. It was a fantastic trip. Thank you Robert. This trip is adventurous but worth it.Written 15 September 2021
- lizard132600 contributionsUnbelievable Wayoutback 4WD Camping tourMy husband and I have recently returned from Uluru on this 5 day 4WD camping tour. Whilst the scenery was spectacular it was better than I could have imagined. What a country we live in! Our tour guide Robert Herzog made our 5 days truly memorable. His passion for The Australian outback and his knowledge of our indigenous culture and story telling was remarkable. My husband had some challenges with some of the walks due to bad knees however Robert went out of his way to ensure my husband had a full inclusive experience. Whilst the scenery was amazing Robert as our guide was what made our holiday one to remember. Liz SmithWritten 14 September 2021
- 955jadef0 contributionsTrip of a lifetimeThe Ultimate experience. I could not have asked for a better tour. The red center is like another world. Our tour guide Robert was next level. He was so passionate and energetic and showed care for everyone in our group. His knowledge was incredible and his delivery kept everyone wanting to hear more. The only downside was that the time went too fast.Written 12 September 2021
- nomadicmongrel0 contributionsReal outback, real adventureMy husband and I went on the 6 day outback tour to Uluru and other red centre highlights. It was spectacular. Our guide Robbie was awesome and had so much knowledge and passion about the area and its history. We felt very well looked after. The food was fantastic and freshly cooked every night. Sleeping out in a swag under the desert night sky watching shooting stars with our new found friends was something I will never forget. Can highly recommend!Written 12 September 2021
- Caroline B0 contributionsTop End ExperienceOur 5 day Jabiru Dreaming 4WD tour of Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine in early August was lots of fun and truly memorable. Our guide Candice was fantastic. Highly capable (incredible 4WD skills!,) very informative about both the landscape and indigenous culture. Her passion for the top end was infectious. Emma our assistant guide was also super helpful and very informative and between the two of them they worked hard to ensure we had a really enjoyable holiday. Candice and Emma would effortlessly produce really great food including lunchtime picnics, ensure we always had ice cold water in our bus each day, a book box we could browse through for reading, and organise beautiful playlists for us to listen to as we observed the amazing landscape roll by our bus windows! Our early starts were certainly worthwhile as it enabled us to get to see the most amazing sites without other tour buses or travellers. There's something rather mystical driving at sunrise and sunset. The camp sites were clean and comfortable in caravan and camping sites which had great amenities including bars and swimming pools and most importantly clean showers and toilets! Our individual packs containing sleeping bags, towel and sheet was easily organised. My advice is that if you are seeking a really memorable and enjoyable experience, in the company of like minded enthusiastic travellers , then I highly recommend this top end experience.Written 11 September 2021
- Gabrielle M0 contributionsLiars, scammers, don't careSCAMMERS. We booked this tour and found out on the day (with the rest of the tour) that Twin falls had been closed for over 2 months prior. The company and the tour guide did not care, even though their terms said they would offer an alternative. They offered no alternative and took our money for both falls. They are in breach of consumer laws through misleading and deceptive conduct.Written 11 September 2021
- Experience3037650 contributionsTERRIBLE - DO NOT GOVERY DISAPPOINTING - DO NOT RECOMMEND company advertises a trip to twin and Jim Jim falls but only Jim Jim was open. twin falls was closed the whole season but the company never told us this was the case, which was very misleading. The website said that if one falls was closed they would take you to another one but that was not true, we only went to one falls: I would not use this tour company again. The guide was very apathetic and didn’t care that we were ripped off (in fact he spent the whole time complaining about the company).Written 11 September 2021
- U5656KZhelenk0 contributionsAmazing tripWe had a great time on our safari which was packed with all the sights and tours needed in the red centre including our very own informative guide Robert. Robert was so passionate about the culture that it was a joy to learn from him and his many interesting stories. Robert also ensured that we enjoyed all the walks at our own pace which were all amazing and provided us with delicious snacks and meals to keep up our energy. We highly recommend Wayoutback Tours and if you're lucky you might get Robert as your guide.Written 7 September 2021

We booked this tour in April with the border closure refund policy in mind. We paid our balance at the end of August, and just over a week later got an email saying our tour was cancelled. We were asked if we wanted a date change or refund. We asked for a refund. For the next six weeks following this, despite us emailing, messaging, calling etc, we only heard back once. I ended up having to contact NT consumer affairs (speak to Amanda - she was a great help) who provided me with other avenues to pursue. We of course understand that the current time is hard for tourism businesses such as this, however, a little communication goes a long way. Not hearing anything back, we feared we would never see our $4000 and they were ignoring us to be dodgy. I finally got my money back yesterday after saying my next step was to go to VCAT and lodge a legally binding order for a refund. The whole experience was really stressful. Communication would have completely changed the course of how we felt about this situation and what we needed to do to rectify it.

Each day of the 5 day tour brought adventure, fun, laughter, amazing experiences on walks and lots of local information and cultural gems. The tour was definitely made even more special by our tour guides and skilled drivers Jay Bichard and Robert Herzog.
Multi tasking is their fortè and they were diligent in ensuring everyone was comfortable, included and safe for the whole tour.
I loved every minute and will be back for another explore soon!

I've not long completed a 5 Day 4WD Jabiru Dreaming Top End Safari. It was just a wonderful opportunity to experience some of what the Top End has to offer. Our guides Jay and Robert excelled at their craft. Their knowledge, willingness to meet the needs of the customer combined with their cooking, guiding and entertaining abilities combined, made for a wonderful tour. Additionally, their enthusiasm, energy and commitment to giving the best service possible was appreciated. I highly recommend any tour Jay and or Robert lead, as I know you would receive the best service possible. Pauline Smith

We have just returned from a great touring experience with Josh and Rick. They were excellent tour leaders - very efficient and organised and really knew the country. They even played guitar and banjo around the campfire into the evening. A very enjoyable way to end the day's touring.
The sunrise cruise on South Alligator River was just beautiful as was the Katherine Gorge. We swam in several pristine waterholes and falls which were so peaceful and refreshing.
Can't recommend this tour highly enough!

Value for money and got a good insight of what KAKADU National Park has to offer.
Aboriginal Rock Art, Waterfalls with beautiful ponds to swim in safely, Boat Cruises at Yellow River Wetlands and Catherine Gorge were epic. Top Didi Cultural Experience with Manual was the highlight for me understanding our aboriginal native AVITARS
Josh & Rick were highly experienced tour operators. They have great knowledge of the land and Aboriginal Culture. The Base Camps sites had all the facilities you need. Sleeping Tents were good. Shower & Toilet facilities nearby. Main Tent had good Seating tables for Meals prepared. Hot water for Tea & Coffee. Cool Water was always provided on the bus to refill at anytime.

This tour was a life-changing experience and I felt so privileged and grateful to have had this holiday.
Our tour guides, Jay and Robert, were abundantly passionate and knowledgeable about the region and made us all feel safe, entertained, educated and really cared about as they looked after all aspects of the tour.
They were both fantastic cooks and catered for my vegetarian diet with tasty and nutritious food.
Our tour had to be modified at the last minute due to COVID restrictions and the tour guides worked tirelessly to ensure we still had a quality experience.
Being in the Kakadu bush was an absolute highlight. Going on bushwalks, swimming in waterholes, looking at wildlife and discovering ancient aboriginal art. The tour was well-organised, comfortable and relaxing the whole time. I enjoyed the tour so much, I would consider doing it again.

We travelled in June 2021. WayOutback were very accommodating of the uncertainty due to covid travel restrictions, and our tour guide Josh was able to adjust our tour and help us work around the Darwin lockdown. We really appreciated having Josh, as a local, as our guide, his knowledge and experience really enhanced our experience. His respect for and connection with the indigenous community was very obvious. There was no question he couldn't answer, he was terrific in engaging with our teenagers, and he was able to plan our activities to best suit the weather and avoid the crowds, giving us the best opportunities in some magical spots. Food was generous, fruit and snacks provided, water always available, camping grounds with pools and bars exceeded our expectations. Tents and beds comfortable. Lack of air-conditioning on the truck right from day 1 was the only problem, and Josh did his best to alleviate this.

This trip with Simon as our guide was more than expected. Simon has a real heart and passion for the area and looked after us so well. He’s a great cook and entertained us with stories and information about this area. We swam safely in waterholes, hiked, tried our hand at spear throwing and “bark” painting in the local style.
The sheer magnificence of this area experienced in such a down to earth way was inspiring.
On our last night Simon cooked dinner in the campfire and even made cupcakes for one of group celebrating her birthday.
A truly memorable trip. Thank you!!

What an amazing tour. Our hosts Jay and Robert began by telling us that we were family, for the next 5 days... and that's how it felt. We were treated to an expert tour, with both Jay's and Robert's enthusiam, extensive knowledge, sense of fun and love of the outback both informing and rubbing off on the whole group. Indigenous Culture and ancient rock painting, Birdlife, crocs, plantlife , wonderful walks, swimming holes (no crocs in those 🙂) expert driving, exceptional organisation and fantastic meals are what Jay and Robert can offer (Robert is a born storyteller). As we were there, Kakadu went into Covid lockdown, but not only did Jay and Robert provide us with amazing alternatives to our cancelled plans, but ensured that everyone was able to catch flights home or get to hotels, with no problems.
This will remain a great memory. Thanks Jay and Robert

This was my second Wayoutback tour on this trip. I was not disappointed. Set at a relaxed pace, with time for ample swims in safe waterholes, this tour provides access to amazing scenery and cultural experiences. The expert knowledge of our guides (thanks Josh and Rick) ensured that when changes had to be made due to cultural reasons an excellent alternative was available. The Yellow Waters cruise and creating my own Crosshatch painting at Topdidge were the highlights for me. Again the campgrounds and permanent tents were comfortable and the food was excellent. I highly recommend this tour.

Yes, our tour had a very large (maybe 50 liters) esky water cooler in the vehicle which was filled with water and ice each morning. We all filled our water bottles from this throughout the day. Once at the campsites tap water is safe for drinking.

It depends the time of year you travel. We went 3rd week in June & Parks had not long opened them. You don’t want to risk swimming in the wet season or when the National park workers don’t deem it safe as there is big risk with crocodiles. Suggest you google info from Kakadu wild life parks.
Do you have the full itinerary? I'm not able to view it on the page.

Sorry I think I posted the wrong itinerary... I did both however this one is more expensive as you go on a day tour (with another company who has the permit to travel into West Arneham land) & have a private tour guide with one of the local elders. You can then purchase some of their art from the cultural centre. I would have loved to buy more & these pieces are unique & this opportunity also. I would HIGHLY recommend to go on this rather than visit Jim Jim falls. Negotiate a far price if you can as we were on a tour that initially had budget & middle price (budget were upgraded not enough booked) they went for 3 days, left us then 4 of us travelled for the next 2 days. The other 2 only did Jim Jim falls & ours was an extra $300 which I feel you can try here for a different price as the actual tour company who take you leave from Darwin where you leave from Kakadu. Hope this all helps.

Day 1 - Darwin to Kakadu National Park via Litchfield National Park
(Lunch, Dinner) You will be collected from your Darwin accommodation at approximately 7.00am for the short journey to Litchfield National Park. Explore the waterfalls, spring-fed streams and rugged sandstone escarpments of the Park. Discover intriguing cathedral and magnetic termite mounds and swim, hike and explore Florence and Wangi Falls* and enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch we leave the highway behind and hit the dirt travelling along the Marrakai Road before joining the Old Jim Jim Road taking us deep into Kakadu National Park. Travelling past billabongs and traversing water crossings brings ample opportunity for wildlife spotting. Arrive at our private campsite complete with comfortable permanent tents at Cooinda where we spend the night enjoying dinner and some stargazing.
Day 2 - Yellow Waters Cruise, Nourlangie and Ubirr Art sites
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Awake for breakfast this morning before joining an iconic Yellow Waters Cruise. A must do activity within Kakadu National Park, the award winning Yellow Waters cruise is Aboriginal owned and centres around a spectacular billabong system that is home to some remarkable and diverse wildlife. Spotting crocodiles is only one of the many wildlife viewing opportunities on this unique water system.
Departing camp we travel to nearby Nourlangie Rock. Here you can see how local Aboriginal people lived in this area through changing times. Environmental and social changes are reflected in the rock art and in the ground, where archaeologists have uncovered over 20,000 years of Aboriginal occupation.
After lunch visit the Bowali Visitor Centre, a Gun-djeihmi name for the local area and creek on land owned by the Mirarr clan. See the audio-visual presentations and Marrawuddi Gallery showcasing Aboriginal art by artists from within Kakadu and the wider region.
Later this afternoon we arrive at the culturally significant Aboriginal art site of Ubirr, located within the East Alligator region of the Park. Here you can view a wide range of ancient Aboriginal art which will be interpreted by your guide. Learn the story of the Rainbow Serpent and climb the Nadab Lookout for panoramic views over the floodplain and beyond into Arnhem Land. After learning about the area, it’s time to pick out a quiet spot to sit while we watch the sun set over the Kakadu escarpment before making the short journey to our private and permanent campsite for the night.
Day 3 - Arnhem Land
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Today, a once in a lifetime experience awaits. Travelling into remote Western Arnhem Land you will witness Ancient Aboriginal Art brought to life by your indigenous guide at Injalak Hill. Take in the amazing views across the escarpment before travelling to the Injalak Art Centre where you say goodbye to your Indigenous guide and hello to some amazing art on offer or, simply watch the indigenous artists at work. Tonight we return to camp for another hearty meal and talk about the day’s adventures with your guide.
Day 4 - Kakadu National Park to Katherine via Gunlom Falls
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) Today, the pace relaxes as we head into Gunlom Falls for a full morning to enjoy all the spectacular area has to offer. Relax around the lower plunge pool before hiking to the top of the falls where an amazing view is on offer, while you can enjoy the many rock holes. For the energetic, keep going to the rear fall where you will be rewarded with a swim under the waterfall. After a tasty lunch it's all aboard as we travel on to the Katherine Region. Later today stop at Edith Falls for a refreshing dip in the plunge pool before retiring to our private campsite near Katherine for dinner, good company and a well deserved rest.
Day 5 - Katherine Gorge, Indigenous Cultural experience. Return to Darwin
(Breakfast/Lunch) It's up early this morning to get into Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) before the masses arrive where you can go on a boat cruise, canoe (optional and own expense) or walk along the sheer rock walls that make this place so spectacular. Spend some time exploring the spiritual home of the Jawoyn Aboriginal people before enjoying lunch. Afterwards we visit the award winning *Top Didj Cultural Experience. Interact with Top End Aboriginal artist Manuel Pamkal and ask questions about aboriginal culture while being enlightened on the significance of his painting style, weapons used and how he lives off the land. Later on, it’s time to sit back and relax for your journey back to Darwin where your guide will deliver you at your chosen accommodation.

Is cash is needed on tour to pay for tours and fees excluded, or is credit card acceptable? What about drinks? BYO or what's the deal?

Hi Phil, you should have pre paid the balance of the tour before you go. The only thing extra you may have to pay is the National Park fees. Contact Way outback via their chat or email & get them to include the fee prior. There are opportunities to buy snacks, coffee, alcohol & souvenirs etc. along the way especially the Indigenous art, books. I got caught with not buying a couple of books when I saw them thinking I could get them in Darwin. I also bought some ointment with multi purpose use that is made from natural ingredients & love it.
The days we found very busy so we were happy to get sleep at night rather than socialising as you can do that on the bus.
