Start your morning on the Big Island on top of the world (literally) during this 6-hour sunrise trip to the peak of Mauna Kea. Watch the first rays of light peek across the horizon from the 13,000-foot (3,900-meter) summit before descending for an included continental breakfast and visit to the Mauna Kea Silversword plant enclosure.
What to Expect
Meet up with your group in the very early morning before sunrise at the Kona headquarters of Hawaii Forest & Trail, or make prior arrangements for a hotel pickup (select hotels only). From there you’ll begin an ascent up the slopes of this 13,000-foot (3,900-meter) volcanic peak.

While en route, stop by the Ellison Onizuza Visitors Information Station, where you can indulge with a hot drink and start acclimating to the change in altitude. You’ll then proceed to the summit, arriving with enough time to watch the magnificent sunrise as it begins to peak over the horizon, glowing with rays of pink, purple, orange, blue and red light.

After experiencing the ultimate high-altitude sunrise, head back down the mountain to celebrate with an included continental breakfast. As you drive to your morning meal, your guide will share insights about the volcano’s array of telescopes and its importance to the worldwide scientific community. Following breakfast, you’ll also have time for a walk amidst the volcano’s unique Silversword plant enclosure before returning to your original starting point.

Sunrise on Mauna Kea - the best way to start the day.

We really enjoyed our stargazing and sunrise experience with Matt and a lovely group of other visitors this past week on Mauna Kea. There was a slight hiccup in our experience; the summit road was closed due to ice (gotta love mother nature) so we...More

Sunrise experience is worth the early start!

Absolutely worth getting up at 2 am for this experience! It can be a “spiritual” experience - depending on how a person defines this for themselves. Observe the stars in the heavens before it gets light, and then experience the most surreal sunrise ever. It’s...More

Lovely sunrise

My party of four was scheduled for a nighttime experience, but it was canceled due to weather. The company was good enough to get us on a sunrise experience two days later so that we could get to the summit and see the sights. It...More

Great experience with Hawaii Forest & Trails.

Really enjoyed the sunrise tour lead by Kim. She was so knowledgeable about all aspects of our tour - the geology, Hawaiian history and traditions, star show, etc. And she got us engaged with good discussions. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather.

Hi you don’t get very long - probably 15-20 minutes. Also you do the star viewing from an observatory at about 9000 ft - not the summit. After doing the star viewing you drive to the top for sunrise. It’s a public road to... More

I think the minibus holds about 12 people so you would need to book the whole thing. I’m sure HF&T could advise. But nb the whole thing is very weather dependent - we were cancelled once before we got on the trip - and the... More
